TL;DR
Asuka Kazama
Asuka is frequently highlighted as a top choice for players seeking a defensive character. She is known for her strong counters and parries, which allow her to punish aggressive opponents effectively [1:2]
[2:3]
[3:9]. Her toolkit includes powerful retreat attacks and range, making her a formidable opponent when played defensively
[2:5].
Jin Kazama
Jin is another character that excels in defensive play. He offers a variety of tools such as safe and rewarding whiff punishers, excellent keep-out moves, and one of the best parries in the game [2:1]. His ability to control space and capitalize on opponents' mistakes makes him a solid choice for those who prefer a patient and reactive playstyle.
Kazuya Mishima
Kazuya is often mentioned alongside other Mishimas for his defensive capabilities. While he lacks some of the additional tools that Jin possesses, Kazuya's gameplay revolves around effective punishment and spacing [2:2]
[4:5]. His defensive strengths lie in his ability to capitalize on whiffs and apply pressure with precise timing.
Leroy Smith
Leroy is noted for his defensive prowess, particularly due to his ability to wait patiently and capitalize on opponents' errors [1:1]. His kit supports a defensive playstyle, allowing players to control the pace of the match and respond effectively to aggression.
Paul Phoenix and Jack-7
Paul and Jack-7 are both recognized for their defensive strengths. Paul has good defensive moves and homing attacks, complemented by his high damage output [1:3]
[2:2]. Jack-7 is known for his keep-out abilities and solid defensive options, making him a reliable choice for players who prefer to control space and punish mistakes
[3:1]
[4:7].
In summary, while Tekken 8 emphasizes aggressive playstyles, there are still several characters that cater to defensive-minded players. By leveraging their unique tools and strategies, players can find success with these characters in a more reactive and strategic manner.
So I love Tekken but playing SF6 obsessively these past few months since release made me realise I actually prefer the slower, more defensive characters in fighting games which has completely changed my approach in Tekken 8 and choosing a main. I played a very defensive Honda in SF6.
So who are the better defensive characters in Tekken 8? Characters with good keep out, defensive pokes, etc?
Thanks!
I don't know all the character that well, but Nina I love, she's a jack of all trades. Also for defense Asuka comes to mind, she has a lot of brutal parries into grabs that punish aggressive people hard and has pretty powerful punishers.
Paul, Bryan, Jack all excel in defense
Funnily enough these are the three characters I've put most of my time into, Paul and Jack especially. Seems like my instincts were correct and are probably the characters for me. Thanks!
I'm playing yoshi pretty defensively
Lee
Just so ya know they created Tekken 8 with aggressive playstyles in mind but if you want to play a defensive character who's all about that waiting and being patient then boy Leroy sounds like the guy for you
I main Dragunov but I noticed I play very defensively. I'm not planning on dropping Dragunov I just want to try out a more defensive character and see how I like it. The only character that I know is defensive and don't want to play is Jack-7.
Paul - Defense first character. Low ranks(like me) unga bunga with him with deathfist and demoman in neutral but thats not how to play him. He's not great at poking either but he has good defensive moves and good homing moves. Plus he has huge damage
Lee - very defensive, meant to play keepout and make reads. His execution is very heavy though with stuff like b2 loops to max out combo damage and then things like justframe strings.
Kazuya- the most defensive Mishima but he lacks all the extra stuff other mishimas like Jin or Heihachi get like stances. You have to rely a lot on playing defense with EWGF and such and then getting a knockdown and starting the 50/50 on wakeup. He also has some of the best punishes in the game(twin pistons).
Bryan- Defensive character, he does an assload of damage whenever you score a counterhit and his style in general is pretty brutal. With walls you get a ton of pressure too at them, especially when you learn his taunt setups. Beyond that he's mostly a Counter Hit machine with multiple moves that lead to full combos off a single counterhit.
Asuka- Simple character, defensive with good strings and also a parry. Plus, theres not really any execution needed to play her unlike other characters like Lee or Kazuya.
Asuka- power, range, counters, retreat attacks
Asuka Fo sho
Asuka Kazama for sure
Jin is very defensive.
i10 KND, i14 wall bounce, i15 big dmg launcher
Ewhf as very safe, quick and rewarding whiff punisher and eCD1 for baited whiffs
i14 ws launcher
Then he has great keep out and CHs with f4, ewhf and standing 4.
And the best parry in the game.
I want to pick up a defensive character because I have determined I like keep out in 3D fighters. I know Jack but I want some more options of who is considered more defensive these days. Thanks everybody.
Pure defense characters: Asuka, Jack-7
For defensive-focused characters: Alisa, Claudio, Eddy
Balanced characters that lean towards being defensive: Armor King, Bryan, Shaheen
Depends who you ask (i.e. versatile characters that can play defensive or just played aggressive): Kazuya, Jin, Lee, Master Raven, Paul (high-level, low-level Paul is very offense-focused)
Claudio is defensive focused? Interesting. I have always liked him but I assumed he was more offensive because of moves like the Superman punch.
He has a bunch of keepout tools and is weak up close. He really wants to stay away from the enemy. All of his punishers are also knockback moves, lol.
His best moves are best used at range - hopkick that's hard to punish at a distance, STB f1+2 as a long range launcher (you can launch Heihachi's ff+2 even), df+4 pushes the enemy to his perfect range (on block or hit), CH launching orbital heel and more.
He has strong, long range moves. His weakness is upclose, where he's basically limited to b+3(3) and df+4 as 13f mids (but no 12f mid) and jabs. He also has almost no pressure strings (or strings at all lol), with a nice buff in Season 3 with b+3,(3) as a CH option.
I would add Steve to that list.
If you like keepout you might wanna give Master Raven a try. She has a bit of everything, so you can play her however you want. But she definitely excels at keepout. She got some really nice whiffpunishment too to complement the long range playstyle. (Blockpunishment is alright too but nothing amazing).
(She's not very straight forward to learn though so expect a lot of trial and error before making any real progress).
Any good, up to date guides you could recommend?
Lee, Kazuya, Bryan
Difficult but cool characters <3
Bears and jack
Asuka
I've been playing tekken for about six months. Lately I've been jumping into ranked with characters I know nothing about and I can't recommend that enough. It really forces you to drop offense, think defensively and read your opponent for counter hits, low parrys, ducks, and sidesteps. I'm wondering what character do you think best rewards solid defensive play.
I mean defence comes down to the player himself tbh. Bc every single character has whiff punishing moves and different CH effects. So it all comes down to u if u r an aggressive or defensive player.
Dunno if he is the best defensive character, but for sure Eddy works a lot in defence in HIS way.
PROS:
- One of the best low punisher (i13, launcher but high) in the game and a terrific backdash that, with d/f+3+4 makes him the best whiff punisher.
- Some good counterhits launcher (or mini launcher for a 50sh two step staple) but slow and very situational.
- He has no magic 4, but his 4 is an i12 middle +0 on hit that pushes a lot back. See it as a defensive d/f+1.
- He has decent space control, with good range moves, like ff3 or f+3+4 from HSP and RLX that crosses half the stage and it's safe. Not the sharpest knife in the stool, but since you will be quite often backdashing and keeping distance a lot, that moves will hit more than their frames let you expect. Most of his range moves are linear, and if opponent start to sidewalk you have homing ff2 that has decent range and a low and delayable extension.
- He has a lot of hi crush moves and weird hitboxes. d/f+3+4 tends to evade highs (more on approaching), as well 3 (homing slow hi) and b+4 (both counter launcher). d/b+4 is hi crush. All of his lows are hi crushing except d/f+4. His stances are evasive as fuck, crushing highs and evading mids, but you have not to be predicatble 'cos it's easy to float staple him during transitions.
CONS:
- On the other hand you have horrible standing punishing (now with b2 i14 the situation is slightly better). Long story short, from -10 to -13 you can just 1,2 (f into mixup).
- Inconsistent sidestep. Mind you, his side roll in RLX is awesome, but slow and vulnerable (not sharing the plain RLX hitbox)... very good when opponent is in mid/far range and tries something from that range.
- Not a good selection of low crushing and weird hitboxes. It's supereasy to go off axis with Eddy.

When it's your turn, his poking is "meh", his frames are usually "bleah", his d/f+1 is average, but he has an awful lot of mixup set-ups, and two lows + on hit (both hi-crushing). He is a great grappler too, probably the best grapple of "not grappler" char. He has low grabs (damn useful when you read the crouch), rodeo (50 dmg) and HSP 3+4 cannot be escaped.
It is not a "normal" character and needs dedication.
Thanks so much for the detailed write up. Eddy seems like such a pour it on offensive character I wouldn't have given him much thought defense wise other than evasion with his stances without this post. I might give him a look.
Heihachi because HA HA HA HA
Infinite stage. 1 jab in. EEEEEHA HA HA HA. EEEEEHA HA HA. EEEEEHA HA HA HA.
Kazuya.
Jack 7 / Asuka / Kazuya
I am not sure how I would rank these characters based on a super aggressive to super defensive scale. What do you guys think?
id say most defensive character are Lee,Lili, jun, asuka, paul
other defensive character that come to mind are bryan, jin, hieihachi kazuya and steve
for very aggressive id say lidia reina dragunov anna
What makes Lili a defensive character? Asking because I'm a new player and I main her
She has the strongest sidestep in the game and is very good at punishing whiffs with mids highs and lows
Not very good at pressuring people
not sure how to rank it, but most aggressive would be Hwo and Anna, most defensive would be Lee
I’m curious how people would rank yoshimitsu in this sense.
if your character isnt Lee and you say its anything but aggressive you are straight coping
aggressive ------------------- defensive
King ------------------------------ King
King players have destroyed this man’s brain. You love to see it
Since season 2 came out I figured out that playing rush down characters weren't really my thing so I figured I'd ask you all whats the best defensive character in the game at the moment.
Kazuya. Some of the best punishment at every frame? Heavily rewards defensive play and character knowledge.
Honorable Mentions:
Shaheen? Simple effective gameplan with good solid tools for poking and forcing your opponent to make a mistake. (Not sure on this as I’m not too familiar with Shaheen, but I think he’s been talked about before).
Paul. Yeah he has Deathfist and Demoman. Glhf having those carry you up without fundamentals. He rewards way more with tight defensive play and massively punishes the opponent for making a mistake.
Bryan? Yes he has Snake Edge and Orbital. But again solid punishment combined with strong pokes. My understanding is that he is mainly a defensive character with Taunt combinations carrying his offense.
I could be mixing poking and defense a bit too much. Apologies in advance if that’s the case.
You should try Asuka. Most of her moves have either built-in movement or are highly evasive. She also requires little execution making her very beginner friendly.
Regular Jin
jack-7
Kazuya he rewards you the most for having good defense
Ive been playing tekken for a while now (106 hours on steam) and I cant seem to find the type of character that I want to main completely I just have many subs. I first tried Kazumi because I heard she was good for learning the game and had good jab punishment thanks to the mishima jab strings but I didnt really do a lot with her all I ever felt like doing was just WR2 as a whiff punish or into backdash or mixup because anytime I got close the match got too unpredictable(Im not sure if this just means I have to get good). Afterwards I tried noctis since he has really good range but there is something about him I just dont like and I find myself not having a lot of fun with noctis. I tried Julia which I really enjoyed because she had decent keepout with ff3 and good mixups with bow and arrow but I have trouble doing a lot of her key moves like ff1 when my opponent is minus and since I dont have a generic df1 I have hard time keeping my opponent in check without getting high crushed. I ended up coming over to Kazuya since he has really good punishment but I had the same problem I had with julia since he doesnt have a generic df1 and I also had trouble punishing with an electric since its way too difficult for a beginner like me to be trying to do and I also kept finding myself whenever I played kazuya I would just backdash into f3 and SS3 the whole time and I couldnt help but feel like this wasnt how I was supposed to play kazuya. Does anyone have any good suggestions on who to try next?
Jack 7. You want range? Got it, You want pokes? Oh baby. You want throws? Got hella throws. Execution? Never heard of it, easy as fuck. Fundamentals? Hella fundamentals text book af. Stupid annoying gimmicks? He’s got those too. Plus the most obnoxious customs in history to bewilder you’re opponents. Just look him, he looks like a fucking robo-Chad. Become a Jack player today! Oh and Fahkumram has amazing keep out and movement but I like Jack more
Thank you I will make sure to try Jack but sadly I cant try fahkumram anytime soon since I dont have money to buy him
Nah fuck F-ram bro Jack is cool. I love him. He’s very easy and has really great moves but also clear weaknesses. If you are a part animal or a fundamentals guy he’s perfect and he will be in every Tekken.
Heihachi Mishima.
Isnt heihachi really execution heavy? I mean block punishing with an electric is no easy task and he also seems to have range problems in his punishes doesnt he?
Never tried him so sorry if I sound really stupid
I'm just joking. Heihachi is literally the opposite of what you are asking. An offensive, execution heavy frame character.
And electric block punishing is easy if you just bound your right key to an another button next to button 2.
Josie. She got good punishment, launches while standing in 13 frames and her "df1" is a simple 3 with good range for keepout. Cd 3 is the bane of every leg user and the sws mixup is so easy to use its criminal. Also STRINGS. Easy 2 use beside some microdash stuff but her bnb combos are easy af
What about whiff punishment? Does her whiff punishment have good range?
Her df2 has excellent range and high evasion for 15f. F1+2 has okay range but leads to a mini combo or a RD combo at 14f . Uf 3+4 the double knees at 14 punishes deathfist reliable so has good range. Or when they are at the other side of the planet f4 (f43) extends her legs like a transformer - rly good range.
Oh thats good then. Also you can try jack if you want a stronger offense.
Alisa if you're comfortable backdashing most of the time.
Bryan as long as you can do qcf and qcb
Yamato
Warco
Jozu
Kuma
Sentomaru
Bege
Barto
Chopper
Jozu top 1 and underrated asf.
Jozu is so slept on

That's just in terms of defense. In terms of where I place them on my tier list, it goes (characters in the same tier are not ordered by strength):
Somehow Feng is still too high.
Should’ve made a special tier for that guy
How is eddy so low???
Because he is a pain to play against🤷♂️
Steve looks like an honest spot. “LOVES PLAYING AGAINST FREE ELO” but you never ran into me.
What
Usually I hate these but yours is accurate
Good list. I’d say it’s pretty accurate
Couldn't agree more
Best defensive characters in Tekken 8
Key Considerations for Defensive Characters in Tekken 8
Playstyle: Defensive characters typically excel at countering attacks, punishing mistakes, and controlling space. Look for characters with strong defensive tools like parries, counters, and evasive moves.
Range and Zoning: Characters with good range can keep opponents at bay, making it harder for them to initiate attacks. Zoning tools like projectiles or long-range normals can be advantageous.
Punishment Options: Effective defensive characters should have strong punishers for capitalizing on opponents' mistakes. Look for characters with fast, high-damage punishments.
Movement and Evasion: Good defensive characters often have excellent movement options, allowing them to sidestep or evade attacks effectively.
Versatility: Some characters can adapt to both defensive and offensive playstyles, giving you flexibility in matches.
Recommended Defensive Characters:
Kazuya Mishima: Known for his strong defensive options, including the ability to punish effectively with his electric wind god fist and solid movement.
Lili Rochefort: Offers a mix of evasive maneuvers and counterattacks, making her a strong choice for defensive play.
Paul Phoenix: While known for his offensive capabilities, Paul also has excellent defensive tools, including powerful counterattacks and a strong punish game.
Asuka Kazama: Renowned for her parry mechanics, Asuka can effectively counter many attacks and has solid defensive options.
King: With his command grabs and strong defensive options, King can control the pace of the match and punish opponents effectively.
