What Redditors are Saying

Best Dell Laptops Under $800

Dell Inspiron 16

The Dell Inspiron 16 is a solid choice within the budget, featuring a 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor, Intel Iris Xe Graphics, 16 GB RAM, and 1 TB storage. This model offers a backlit keyboard and a large screen, meeting the requirements for both productivity and general use [1]. However, this option may not be suitable for gaming or video editing due to its integrated graphics [1:3].

Dell Latitude Series

The Dell Latitude series is frequently recommended for its build quality and ease of upgrades. The Latitude 3000 or 5000 series can be found at the Dell Outlet, often offering good deals on refurbished or overstocked items [1:1][1:2]. These models are particularly noted for their durability and repairability, making them a great investment for long-term use.

Considerations for Linux Users

For those interested in using Linux, the Latitude series is again suggested as a viable option [2:1]. It's important to ensure compatibility with Linux, particularly concerning WiFi and Bluetooth components [2:3]. Some users have faced challenges installing Linux on Dell machines due to RAID configurations, but these issues can often be resolved by breaking the RAID setup [2:5].

Alternative Recommendations

While not Dell-specific, other laptops such as the Lenovo Ideapad 5 Pro and MSI Modern 14 AMD edition were mentioned as fitting similar criteria for under $800 [4:3][4:4]. These options could be considered if flexibility in brand choice is possible, offering competitive specs for light gaming and school use.

Additional Resources

For those seeking laptops with strong battery life, Jarrod's Tech provides a list of laptops ranked by battery performance, which might be useful for finding models that balance power and portability [5:1].

ORIGINAL POST

Trying to help a family member get a new laptop, his job is offering a discount on whichever one he chooses, but it has to be Dell, bought from their website. Which is the best one with a budget of 800 max? Ideally, it would have a 16 inch screen, and 1 TB storage. Backlit keyboard is a must.

I did some research and came to the conclusion that the

Dell Inspiron 16

13th Gen Intel® Core ™M 17-1360P (18 MB cache, 12 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.00 GHz Turbo)- the 13th gen 17

Graphics Card

Intel@ Iris® Xe Graphics-

16 GB Ram, 1 TB Storage.

would be the best option.

Look for a Latitude or XPS on the Outlet store. They're better built.

That is a good option as long as their usage doesn't include gaming, video editing, or other GPU intensive tasks.

If he can order from the Dell Outlet (these include returns and overstocked items), I would get a Latitude either 3000 series or 5000 series. I do like the AMD processors myself, but Dell seems to have more choices with intel. So, I would think about i7 vs. i5 version 12 or 13 and 16gb ram. It seems it is easier to fix or upgrade a Latitude in the future.

The Outlet often has good choices in Latitudes in the $700-899 range. There is a good chance he could still get a new Latitude 3000 with good specs at $800 as well.

here is one example

https://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?c=us&cs=28&l=en&s=dfb&sign=PXhcOSHtr1T4IOw%2fPR7UddUHvsZs7%2bu3L1lZUTegvJj789M0zGYxC9FDu3PAHwDdgO7TtpKIBPbnfjkmpbtP02Y27ESt3bgHhqwoO6aXuCFVVl31V1J%2fgQtiAq0zt3QuzPkXP0FF%2b8f3%2fwgTT0L5xFk7yT2k7VrUnHRGQx4keCsAc3O79xCpBej7k6MZqUKQAfJWcI2AFCU%3d

DON'T!

I bought 2 Dells. One was "refurbished." I installed Ubuntu. It gave me an error and it wouldn't boot beyond some basic text only screen. I gave up and reinstalled Windows 11. The second was more basic computer but I couldn't install Ubuntu as it has 2 hard dives in a raid 0 setup.

My recommendation: try something beside Dell.

Literally, the dumbest reason to dismiss buying a machine. I can understand issues from booting from because of errors (which may have been solvable, IMHO) but bitching about not being able to install because the drives are in RAID 0? Come on, that just silly.

If its RAID 0 in the BIOS (Intel RST or AMD RAIDXpert) then Ubuntu should installed without any issues. Alternatively, just break the RAID as RAID 0 is stupid, you're just asking for future data loss.

Not a lot of specifics there. You could have just installed Linux on one of those drives and mounted the other separately.

Just get something with Intel WiFi/BT and you will mostly be fine.

I have the Dell XPS 16 refurb NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS and can't get help. HDMI Sound not working - Touch Screen not working - the f1 to f12 keys are lit up rather than the small volume, etc pics - can't get the bluetooth mouse to connect. The Premium Support is terrible.

I would take the advice of others:

Lenovo ThinkPad P-Series

HP Zenbook

Lenovo Ideapad

Are there any Lenovo's that have a backlit keyboard? I've been avoiding them because it seems like none of them have that feature.

Do you know if the HP Zenbook has a backlit keyboard?

whatever you do, don't order directly from dell. you'll never get it and they wont give your money back.

if you go through this subreddit there are endless threads about product never arriving or fedex employees stealing dell packages. customer service is always unresponsive and no help.

im just fear mongering but i've seen enough stories to put me off from ever buying dell. not that i would anyway, as i prefer gaming pcs and alienwares are a proprietary mess.

My Lenovo with mid range specs was $650 I believe and I love it. Most people really don't need a fancy laptop but I guess it depends on what you need it for.

Would recommend checking sale prices on last year's models. They tend to roll out new ones before the holidays. Specific model doesn't matter as much as performance at that price. Most brands are good, HP is solid, Dell is passable with certain models, Lenovo is a great choice, and chrome books are paperweights! Get anything with a Core i5, or Ryzen 5 (or better if it's on sale) and a solid state drive (ssd) of at least 500gb with a 1tb hard drive. RAM or memory could be around 8gb minimum. I hope this helps! I do tech support full time, and sold PCs and other electronics for years.

Best option for $800?

Posted by PillowPantsXX · in r/GamingLaptops · 2 years ago

Hi I've been looked through the last month or so of posts and haven't seemed to find any single best recommendation. Looking to spend near $800 for a budget gaming laptop.

Main games I'm looking to use it for aren't all that demanding. Diablo 2 resurrected, csgo, chess. Possible video recording/streaming of those games, though I'm not surprised if that's asking too much.

I saw the many nitro 5 posts, and the IdeaPad on sale at best buy. But those are like 600, I want to spend a couple hundred more so I can at least hope to video record/edit if I'm lucky.

I do know that I want at least 500gb ssd. Other than that Im not sure exactly what I should look for. Thanks in advance.

I have a Lenovo legion y540-15IRH that was about $1000-1100 or so if I remember, this feels dumb because it’s Reddit but I am looking to sell it for around your price point to buy a pc so maybe if you’re interested we can work something out. Otherwise though if you can find it on sale it’s not a bad laptop, Had it for like a year and a half or so and it still works great I use it for gaming and school and I’ve never had a problem playing Csgo or any other games like that

When items go on sale at bestbuy, they also discount their open-box items as well. I just got an open-box G14 Zephyrus 3060 for $749 before tax. Still testing it, but it's a phenomenal laptop so far. Basically new. Build quality is great as opposed to the nitro 5s. Now that deal is over however, but you can probably expect deals like those coming into this holiday season.

I would recommend trying to go for a 3060, they are a lot stronger than a 3050 or 3050ti. Screen size is up to you, I would recommend seeing them in person at like a Walmart or BB though you can always connect an external monitor to it. Screen resolution is subjective and depends on you, for example a lot of people agree that 1080p is perfect for a 14 inch laptop and any more is a waste of money. Refresh rate should be 120hz+, 60hz is fine but old news.

For a gaming laptop : 16gb ram, 6 to 8 cores, 1TB ssd if possible. If on a budget look for a laptop that has dual m.2 slots and dual memory slots.

best dell laptops under $800

Key Considerations for Dell Laptops Under $800:

  1. Performance: Look for at least an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor for good performance in everyday tasks and multitasking.

  2. RAM: Aim for a minimum of 8GB of RAM to ensure smooth operation, especially if you plan to run multiple applications simultaneously.

  3. Storage: Consider SSDs (Solid State Drives) over HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) for faster boot times and quicker file access. A 256GB SSD is a good starting point.

  4. Display Quality: A Full HD (1920 x 1080) display is preferable for better clarity and viewing experience.

  5. Battery Life: Look for laptops with at least 6-8 hours of battery life for portability and convenience.

Recommendations:

  1. Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series:

    • Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5
    • RAM: 8GB
    • Storage: 256GB SSD
    • Display: 15.6" Full HD
    • Price Range: Typically around $600-$700
  2. Dell Latitude 3410:

    • Processor: Intel Core i5
    • RAM: 8GB
    • Storage: 256GB SSD
    • Display: 14" Full HD
    • Price Range: Around $700
  3. Dell G3 15 Gaming Laptop:

    • Processor: Intel Core i5
    • RAM: 8GB
    • Storage: 512GB SSD
    • Display: 15.6" Full HD
    • Price Range: Close to $800, great for gaming and general use.
