What Redditors are Saying

Best Gaming Laptops Under $800

TL;DR

  • Look for laptops with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 4060, or used 4070 GPUs.
  • Consider brands like Lenovo LOQ, ASUS TUF, and Acer Nitro 5.

Recommended Models

Several models have been recommended across the discussions. The Lenovo LOQ and ASUS TUF are popular choices that offer good performance within the budget [1:2], [4:1]. The Acer Nitro 5 is another option, praised for its upgradability and decent build quality [2:1]. These models should be able to handle games like Call of Duty and GTA 5 at medium settings.

GPU Considerations

For gaming laptops under $800, the GPU is a critical component. Aiming for a laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or 4060 is advisable [1:1], [5:5]. If you're open to purchasing second-hand, you might find deals on laptops with a 3070ti, 3080, or even a 4070 [1:4], [3:2]. These GPUs will provide better performance for newer games and streaming.

Second-Hand Market

Exploring the second-hand market can yield excellent deals on gaming laptops. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace often have older models that still perform well [1:2]. While these options may not have the latest specs, they can offer great value for money.

Performance Expectations

It's important to set realistic expectations for gaming laptops under $800. While you can find models capable of running most games smoothly, achieving high performance without fan noise might require a higher budget [3:1]. For demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Diablo 4, ensure the laptop has a capable GPU and consider upgrading RAM if necessary.

Additional Tips

When choosing a laptop, focus on the GPU as the primary spec to determine performance [5:1]. Brands like ASUS and Lenovo frequently offer student discounts, which can help reduce costs further [5:6]. Always check reviews and specifications before purchasing to ensure the model meets your gaming needs.

ORIGINAL POST

I have never owned a gaming laptop, but I want to get one, which one should I buy for no more than $800? I’m looking to play COD mainly. Preferably from Amazon / Best Buy / (Almost) Any Physical Store.

Would look into a Lenovo LOQ or an ASUS TUF.

Should be pretty easy to find a deal in the US, aim for a 3060 and above.

https://gaminglaptop.deals/united-states/

Don't know if you've considered the second hand market? You can get mad deals on Facebook Marketplace. The stuff may be a little older but probably just as performant tbh. This is a consideration you can forego at your price range, but it might be something worth looking in to.

Look for a new or used laptop with a 3070ti, 3080 or 4060 GPU.

Your best bet is Best Buy deal on open box. At minimum you will need 4060 if you want to play Call of Duty and Warzone at 1080p Medium/High settings.

Remember that CoD is now on Xbox Gamepass, so try it before you buy it. Why waste money if it is shit 🤣🤣🤣

Second as used laptops go look for 3080 (16gb vram version) 4060 or 4070 as second hand/refurbished they all are under 800.

Just recently on Prime Day you had loads of 4060 laptops for under 800

Looking for a gaming laptop around $800ish

Posted by xnewbreedx Ā· in r/SuggestALaptop Ā· 6 years ago
  • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $800. Slightly flexible. USA

  • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Prefer specs over battery life definitely.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Nothing massive but not a huge factor

  • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would mainly like to play League of Legends and maybe rocket league. Also, casual browsing/school work

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Doesn't have to be ultra settings. Moderate settings would be nice.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not even sure what to look for here. Don't want a very flimsy laptop and a good keyboard seems useful.

I would recommend this Acer Nitro 5

The display cover has a brushed-metal look to it and you can open it with one hand.

Ram is easily upgradeable, SSD is also upgradable but it needs a little more work.

Keyboard is backlit chiclet keyboard (only red) and it can be turned on and off, with good travel and precision.

Touchpad supports multi-touch gestures and it is big enough to use them, with clear pressure point.

Screen is not super bright, so it might struggle in direct sunlight, and color coverage is also not great but slightly above average at 40% RGB and 62% sRGB.

Screen doesn't have Screen flickering / PWM and it has IPS panel so the viewing angles are great, but response time is not great too.

CPU throttle a little and gets hot (to the point that it is painful to use on your lap), but for general usage and most games it shouldn't have a big negative impact.

GPU is powerful enough to run League of Legends and rocket league on Medium to high settings, you can view the expected FPs from this link

https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Ti-Notebook.168400.0.html

Fan noise is very low during idle or light usage, but rather loud during gaming, but that is to be expected.

Battery life during non gaming usage is very good for a gaming laptop at around 5.5-6.5 hours.

Hello! I’m a console gamer and never owned a laptop in my entire life.

I want to be able to play basically any game without much fan noise as a distraction and an overall smooth experience. Whats a good laptop I can get that’s under that price range that will allow me to play newer games smoothly and will allow me to stream on twitch/youtube??

Any help is appreciated thanks šŸ–¤

Any recent game played smooth without hearing the fans on a 800€ laptop, sorry to tell you that but you’ll have to stay on console with that budget or go desktop.

you will have to consider at least a budget of 1200~1500 for something that’ll be a minimum future proof ( read there few years future proof, not dozen ).

Any Decent Gaming Laptops Under $800?

Posted by Auruko4 Ā· in r/GamingLaptops Ā· 3 months ago

Hello everyone. I have been doing a lot of research in the past few days about laptops that cost less than $800, because that is my budget. However, there are just way too many options to choose from. So I figured I'd take my chances and come to Reddit, because I know that people here tend to be experts on specific topics. So, does anyone have any recommendations for good laptops? The most intense game I would play is GTA 5.

Buying my first

My budget is 800 or less and I dint need any crazy specks. Im upgrading from a Steam Deck. My most demanding game will be Path of Exil 3, cyberpunk 2077, Diablo 4. Most AAA games I will play on console. For the exception of the listed games I will mostly play smaller indie typ of game. Also will stream Gampass as well. I've got my eye on a few laptops. So I know that these low budget ones aren't amazing. I know they have positive and negative things about them. I just dont know a darn thing about them. So for the price if this one what are your thoughts on it for my needs. Don't need to be pmaying games at a crazy FPS, just a nice 60 or a kittle better with medium to high graphics. Also not going to be buying one right now but for sure in the next 2 months. Not made of money

Best gaming laptop for 800 or less?

I know next to nothing about laptops, or computers in general. Won't be doing any necessarily high end gaming, but looking for something that could be all purpose too? Data input software, streaming software, stuff like that as well as small time gaming.

I'm hoping I might be able to be pointed in the right direction? Thanks!

I appreciate the help, I know next to nothing I feel like when it comes to this stuff so I'm always stuck reading reviews more than anything or trying to ask anyone who isn't a sales associate trying to push a MacBook.

Because each device is basically bespoke, it’s hard to find accurate performance measurements for gaming laptop, in addition to the integrated peripherals. (In extreme cases, a lower tier GPU driven at a higher TDP, will perform close to a higher tier part driven at lower TDP) It’s a lot to keep track of.

Still, if you want your pc gaming, and involve it in your social life, a laptop makes this easy to do. Though some of the newer gaming tablets look really compelling for this too.

No problem, unfortunately it is not where I live so can not give that much help with other options, The Omen that is mentioned by HotEggFriedRice seems like a good choice certainly if your other options are 1650 based systems. It has a capable CPU and GPU which happily will do 60fps mostly high settings at 1080p on modern games it will play anything if your happy with a few medium settings on the most demanding games. it would definitely be worth adding a 2nd stick of RAM, and possibly more storage yourself after the purchase. Ryzen gets nerfed quite bad with single channel RAM. But it is cheaper to add RAM and SSD's yourself rather than buying a laptop with it already installed.

So it will beast most emulation type tasks, to be honest if you are only doing older game Emulation I am sure you could get away with paying half as much. You just need half decent CPU with integrated graphics to run that sort of thing. But surely at some point you will decide to install a proper PC game? And I am sorry I am not familier with the term "fan games" is that like independently published games?

But I would personally either pay less than your budget if you only intend on playing emulation, or a little bit more if you intend on exploring other games.

If you were able to save a couple of hundred more you will start opening option's Like 115W RTX 2060's some 2070's maybe even a few 3060's which would be quite a step up from the 1660ti, you might not need the extra power at the moment but it will save you money in a few years because you will not feel you need to upgrade for longer.

$800 Gaming laptops

I got around 800 dollars that im willing to spend on a laptop so to really make my money worth decided to look through some refurbished laptops. These 5 are the ones that seemed to stand out to me so I wanted to hear y'all's opinions on which to get. If theres another around that price that you think would be good im also willing to take suggestions. I do have a PC but im going to college in a year so I thought getting a laptop would be a good idea for while im there and kinda just for schoolwork in general.

If you’re sticking around $800, I’d personally lean toward something with at least an RTX 3060 or higher since that’ll give you much more longevity for both gaming and school use. Out of the ones you linked, the Legion and TUF models usually hold up the best in terms of thermals and durability. Refurbs can be a solid way to stretch your budget, just make sure the seller offers a warranty/return window. Also, keep an eye on new deals — sometimes you can snag a brand-new HP Victus or Lenovo Legion on sale for close to that price.

best gaming laptops under $800

Key Considerations for Gaming Laptops Under $800:

  1. Graphics Card: Look for laptops with dedicated GPUs like the NVIDIA GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon RX 5500M for decent gaming performance.

  2. Processor: Aim for at least an Intel Core i5 (10th generation or newer) or AMD Ryzen 5 for a good balance of performance and efficiency.

  3. RAM: A minimum of 8GB of RAM is essential for gaming. If possible, consider models that allow for future upgrades.

  4. Storage: SSDs (Solid State Drives) are preferred for faster load times. Look for at least 256GB SSD, or a combination of SSD and HDD for more storage.

  5. Display: A Full HD (1920x1080) display is ideal for gaming. Refresh rates of 60Hz or higher can enhance the gaming experience.

Recommendations:

  1. Acer Nitro 5:

    • Specs: Intel Core i5, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.
    • Why: Good performance for the price, decent cooling, and solid build quality.
  2. HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop:

    • Specs: AMD Ryzen 5, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
    • Why: Offers a larger SSD for storage and good overall performance for gaming.
  3. Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3:

    • Specs: AMD Ryzen 5, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.
    • Why: Known for its comfortable keyboard and good thermal management.
  4. ASUS TUF Gaming FX505:

    • Specs: Intel Core i5, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
    • Why: Durable design and decent performance for gaming and multitasking.

Takeaway: When shopping for a gaming laptop under $800, prioritize the GPU and CPU, and ensure you have enough RAM and storage for a smooth gaming experience. Always check for sales or discounts to get the best value!
