What Redditors are Saying

Best Laptops for Students Under $800

TL;DR

  • Acer Aspire 5: Great battery life, strong performance with Intel i7-1355U [2:1].
  • Lenovo ThinkBook 13s Gen 4 AMD: Solid specs with Ryzen 7 6800U, slightly above budget but worth considering [1:1].
  • LG Gram: Lightweight and portable, good for students who prioritize mobility [1:2].
  • Refurbished MacBook Air M1: Excellent value if you can find one within budget [1:3].

Acer Aspire 5

The Acer Aspire 5 is frequently recommended for students due to its balance of performance and affordability. It features a Core i7-1355U CPU, Intel Iris Xe Graphics, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Its 15.6" Full HD IPS screen and 9.5-hour battery life make it suitable for long study sessions [2:1]. The laptop also includes a thunderbolt port, adding versatility for connectivity [2:2].

Lenovo ThinkBook 13s Gen 4 AMD

Though slightly above the $800 mark at $861.60, the Lenovo ThinkBook 13s offers excellent specs with a Ryzen 7 6800U processor, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. It's a solid choice for business majors or any student needing reliable performance without heavy software demands [1:1].

LG Gram

For those prioritizing portability, the LG Gram is a lightweight option that doesn't compromise on performance. Available for around $700, it's ideal for students who need to carry their laptops across campus regularly [1:2].

Refurbished MacBook Air M1

If you're open to using macOS, a refurbished MacBook Air with the M1 chip provides great value. Known for its efficiency and long battery life, it suits students who don't require Windows-specific applications and are comfortable with Apple's ecosystem [1:3].

Additional Considerations

When choosing a laptop, consider your specific needs such as build quality, battery life, and whether you plan to use any specialized software. Brands like Dell, HP, and Asus offer reliable options, but some users advise caution with HP due to mixed reviews on reliability [1:5][1:6]. For students not requiring gaming capabilities, focusing on battery life and weight might be more beneficial [5:1].

Ultimately, the best laptop for you will depend on your personal preferences and academic requirements.

For context, I’m going to be a business major, so no extra creativity functions (great editing software, sound software etc.) are required. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

$700 LG Gram 15z95n from Costco will be great if laptops like MBP 15 is still too heavy for you.

As much as it pains me to say it a used/refurbished m1 base model Mac book air is probably the best bang for the buck right now provided you can get along with Mac os and don't want to game too much

You pretty much can't go wrong with anything from Dell, HP, or Lenovo as long as the hardware specs meet your needs. For Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM is ideal. For Linux, 8GB is plenty for almost any distribution.

Since you are not going to game, and you prioritize build quality, I would recommend this Acer Aspire 5 because

  • It comes with an i7-1355U CPU.

  • It offers great value for money since it comes with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.

  • Slim, sleek.

  • The lid of the device has a matte finish on its aluminum material. On the other side, the plastic material on the rest of the chassis is retained.

  • Its lid cannot be opened with a single hand. On the bright side, it is sturdy and prone to flexes. Moreover, we see an upgrade in the hinge department that leaves them a lot stronger than before.

  • The narrow-bezel design offers more real estate for amazing images. Crisp, true-to-life colors come alive on a 15.6” Full HD IPS display with Acer Color Intelligence.

  • Battery life advertised Up to 9.5-hours Battery Life.

According to https://eu.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/acer/aspire-a515-44-r41b

  • Comes with a range of ports, including 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, USB 2.0 port and HDMI port.

And I have recommended this because

  • has a very good build quality .

  • Great value for money.

  • Has a very good CPU for coding environments, IDEs, and multitasking efficiently.

  • Long battery life.

  • Good keyboard .

And if you prefer a better CPU and can push your budget a little higher, then I would recommend Acer Swift** because it comes with :

Specs:

  • Screen: 14" .

  • CPU : Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 155H

  • Ram : 16GB LPDDR4X

  • Storage : 512GB SSD

  • What I love about this acer is that it is the perfect middle ground between value for money, weight/battery and all metal build, so it matches your request of build quality.

  • Long battery life up to 10hours .

  • Powerful CPU for programming and school. *Great value for money.

  • Lightweight, so you can carry it comfortably.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$800–$1,200, US

Are you open to refurbs/used?
Prefer new, but open to refurbished laptops if they’re a great value for students

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life and build quality are top priority for college use, followed by performance; ultrabook or slim laptop style preferred

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important — I’ll be carrying it between classes and around campus daily, so a lightweight laptop is a must

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13–15 inches for portability and comfort

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Primarily note-taking, research, online classes, and streaming, plus light Adobe Photoshop and Premiere work

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not a gaming laptop priority, but light indie or casual games at medium settings would be fine

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build, comfortable keyboard for long writing sessions, responsive touchpad; touchscreen optional

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I’m looking for the best laptop for a college freshman that can last through all four years without constant repairs. Strong battery life for all-day use, portability, and durability are essential. I’ve seen student laptop recommendations like the MacBook Air, Dell XPS, and Lenovo ThinkPad, but I’d love to hear from people who’ve used them in real college settings.

Since you prioritize battery life, and build quality, and you are going to need good CPU and GPU for video editing , and gaming, I would recommend Acer Swift X 4060 because of the following :

Specs:

  • Screen: 14.5" OLED 2880 x 1800 120Hz Calman Verified
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 155H which is very powerful and you care about performance.
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060
  • Ram: 16GB LPDDR5X
  • Storage: 1TB SSD

Why I am recommending it:

  • Powerful GPU in small form factor, 14 inch laptops with powerful GPU are rare breed, and this config/model hits a great balance between the two.

  • High-Quality Display*: This features a OLED 2880 x 1800 120Hz which is better resolution display, providing vibrant colors and sharp visuals.

  • Long battery life as it lasts for around 12hours *Very good GPU and CPU for Adobe Photoshop and Premiere.

  • Lightweight as it weighs 3lbs , so it matches your request of portability.

  • Premium build quality and material which ensures longevity and you care about build quality.

well according to your requirement the only thing that comes close in MacBook. Looking at your budget get an m4 MacBook air the base config or you could go for m3 or m2 MacBook air with higher configs. As you are a student get it with a student discount. Dont go for windows laptop cause the only windows laptop which offer a decent battery life are laptops with intel lunar lake processors. But all the lunar lake laptops cost above 1000 dollars. Check whether MacBook air can run your required software applications and go for it.

P.S. My recommendation is purely based on battery life

If you want something that will last, get a HP Zbook or Dell precision(the 5000 series since those are crazy thin),they are made very well and offer crazy performance, you can find some older one with like 10th gen or 9th gen CPUs for that price, still very solid laptops

Since a reliable build and portability is a big factor, I would suggest a Lenovo T14. It is very portable at 2.9 pounds and has a battery life of around 10 hours doing general tasks like schoolwork. These T series laptops are especially durable and has great reliability. If you have any questions lmk :)

I would recommend Acer Swift X because it packs impressive power inside an ultraportable case and is a great pick if you want a high-performance, highly portable laptop. Where most ultraportables prize efficiency and rely on integrated graphics, the Swift X serves up Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU for an added punch. With the RTX graphics and a powerful AMD CPU, the Swift X is able to handle content-creation tasks and some gaming in addition to the basic office chores for which most ultraportables are built.

Acer Swift X specifications:

  • CPU: 8-core, 16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 5800U
  • Memory: 16GB
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti
  • Storage: 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
  • Display: 14-inch, 1920×1080 IPS non-touch
  • Webcam: 720p
  • Connectivity: Left: 1 x SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps Type-C, 1 x SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps Type-A (with power-off charging), HDMI 2.0. Right: 1 x SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps Type-A, combo audio jack.
  • Networking: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2
  • Biometrics: Fingerprint reader
  • Battery capacity: 58.7 Watt-hours
  • Dimensions: 12.71 x 8.35 x 0.7 inches
  • Measured weight: 3.1 pounds (laptop), 0.9 pounds (AC adapter)

Summarize

Seeking advice on the best laptop for student

Posted by ConfidentDust2888 · in r/macbookair · 7 months ago

Hi everyone, I'm a student looking to upgrade to a new laptop with a budget of around $800-1000. My requirements aren’t too demanding (I do play games, but things like a high-quality display or loud speakers aren’t my priority).

Here’s what I need:

16GB RAM (or at least 8GB with upgrade options) for running multiple tabs and dual booting A dedicated GPU for basic ML/AI model training A screen that’s at least 15 inches and easy on the eyes for someone with nearsightedness Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations. Thanks

At this budget, if a big screen is what you're looking for, then your only choice really is a used M2 Air.

But please don't expect too much in terms of gaming, Macs are productivity machines first and foremost.
