TL;DR
Dentastix
Dentastix are widely recommended by dog owners and veterinarians alike. Many users report positive results with Dentastix in maintaining their dogs' dental health [3:2]
[3:5]. They are considered effective at reducing plaque and tartar buildup, and many dogs enjoy them as a treat
[3:7]. However, some users caution that they should not be seen as food but rather as a dental aid
[3:11].
Kirkland Dental Chews
Kirkland Dental Chews are another popular option, especially noted for their affordability compared to other brands like Greenies [4:5]. While some users have reported concerns about the calorie content and potential lack of dental benefits
[4:6], others find them to be an enjoyable treat for their dogs
[4:10]. It's important to consider your dog's size when determining if these chews are appropriate
[4:5].
Greenies
Greenies are often compared to Kirkland Dental Chews, with users noting their effectiveness in cleaning teeth [4:1]. They are known for being palatable and beneficial for dental health, though they tend to be more expensive than other options.
Alternative Products
For those looking for alternatives to traditional dental chews, products like Pro-Den Plaque Off, which is an enzymatic powder added to food, can be effective [3:4]. Additionally, Nylabone Advanced Oral Care Liquid Tartar Remover has been mentioned as a useful water additive
[3:6]
[3:10].
Veterinary Recommendations
It's advisable to consult the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) list for approved products that are deemed safe and effective against tartar and plaque [3:8]. Regular dental cleanings and daily brushing are also recommended for optimal dental health
[3:8].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When selecting dental chews, consider factors such as your dog's size, chewing habits, and any dietary restrictions. It may also be helpful to discuss options with your veterinarian to ensure the chosen product meets your dog's specific needs.
Meet Dante. Before he was ours, he belonged to our neighbors but really, he was the neighborhood dog. A street smart pup, we used to call him Callejero because he was always roaming around, catching up on the latest chisme. One day, a stray Doberman showed up, looking to mate. Dante had a friend nearby who was in heat, and unfortunately, the Doberman found her. Since Dante was close, he became the Doberman’s target. One morning, I heard desperate yelping. I looked outside and saw the Doberman had Dante by the throat, violently shaking him before running off with him still in his jaws. I jumped in my car and sped off to find them. A few blocks down, I saw them Dante still in the Doberman’s grip. I got out and chased the Doberman until he finally let go. Dante was in terrible shape. He was bleeding heavily, barely breathing I thought he was going to die. I stayed by his side, crying, until my dad arrived. He called our neighbors, Dante’s original owners, and they carried him back to their house. I was convinced he wouldn’t make it. But a few hours later, my dad called me and said, “Mija, look Dante’s up!” I rushed over and saw him, IV in place, sitting up with that same calm, stoic look. I couldn’t believe it. He survived. I cried tears of joy. After that, we started feeding and loving him. When our neighbors eventually moved away and left him behind, we didn’t hesitate we brought him in for good. Now, he’s a happy, healthy, and deeply loved member of our family.
Pobre callejero aka Dante, thank you!
Thanks for saving Dante and taking care of him! You did very well on this day when this nightmare happened with the attack by the Dobermann. Most people would have been too afraid to intervene i guess and i can't even blame them, because these dogs are no joke.
Glad he survived and now he's with you. But did the neighbours just leave him behind? That is crazy for me, in my country, you get serious punishment for abandoning a dog. All dogs have chips and so, it's easy to identify the owner with the database. They'd have get up to 2 years in prison for this in my place.
That's how it should be! What country is that?
Thank you!!!
As he should be 🥹💕
What an arc 🥺 glad you took in the callejero
Dante desperately needs a gentle boop and some ear rubs.
Lost my dog yesterday. I’m a mess :(
I’m so sorry! Whenever I think of my dog and how she’s been nothing but loving toward me, I think of this lovely tribute Janicza Bravo wrote for her dog
I'm so sorry 😞 It's a pain like no other. Please take care of yourself.
There's an amazing essay written by a doctor who lost his wife to cancer (The Day I Started Lying to Ruth by Peter Bach). I wouldn't recommend reading the whole thing while you're fresh on the heels of grief - it's beautifully written but a raw, tough read - but I'd like to share the final paragraph. I revisit it frequently in times of grief:
"It turns out that Hollywood has grief and loss all wrong. The waves and spikes don’t arrive predictably in time or severity. It’s not an anniversary that brings the loss to mind, or someone else’s reminiscences, nor being in a restaurant where you once were together. It’s in the grocery aisle passing the romaine lettuce and recalling how your spouse learned to make Caesar salad, with garlic-soaked croutons, because it was the only salad you’d agree to eat. Or when you glance at a rerun in an airport departure lounge and it’s one of the episodes that aired in the midst of a winter afternoon years earlier, an afternoon that you two had passed together. Or on the rise of a full moon, because your wife, from the day you met her, used to quote from The Sheltering Sky about how few you actually see in your entire life. It’s not sobbing, collapsing, moaning grief. It’s phantom-limb pain. It aches, it throbs, there’s nothing there, and yet you never want it to go away."
Thank you for this 🩵 today I cried because I missed his tail wagging and loudly banging on the oven door when it was time for him to eat, it was the most painful silence I’ve heard
:( I so empathise with that first line - it’s surprisingly so hard to talk about losing a dog (or any pet really). I lost my little man in Feb and still struggle to mention him even in passing most of the time because I get such a lump in my throat so quickly. I really feel for Jessica and I think this is such a lovely message to share. I’m sure her little guy is happy wherever he is ❤️
i’m sorry for your loss 🩷
thank you ❤️ my little man got to an amazing age (17!) so I just try to be thankful that I got so much time with him 🥹
We dont deserve dogs ❤️
I feel for her. I lost my dog four months ago tomorrow and I don't think I'll ever be the same.
10 years for me and I can't think about him for more than a moment without tearing up. They have such beautiful souls and make such a mark on our lives. So sorry for your loss.
Yes! thank you Jessica for encouraging people - even in your time of grief - to adopt rather than shop when they are ready to find their new best friend.
I’ve found that giving a rescue pet a new home is a great way to honor a passed pet’s life once the grief has subsided a bit ♥️
Those denta-stix things actually work pretty well. My dog is still young, so she gets cow femur chunks to nonkle on for her little white teeth. After the age of 6 or so, the teeth get too brittle for safe bone nonkling. Denta-stix do seem to work. Feed one a day and after a few weeks the teeth look better.
My previous dog had a lot of buildup on the teeth. My vet said 'I can take it off next time he's under, but there's no point - the gums are healthy and the teeth are fine'. So I gave him the denta-stix.
They are expressly not food - it's like chicken waste products and sand or something in there - but it works.
My dog has been in the pedigree dental sticks since he aged into them as a puppy. He’s 8 years old and the vets always express pleasure with how clean his teeth are. They’re amazing.
Dental Stix are quite good, I give my dog one every few days and keeps her teeth in good shape
My dogs get dentastix every night at bedtime. I like to think of it as brushing their teeth before bed lol. Vets and groomers are always amazed by how clean their teeth are.
Pretty sure dentastix are just candy for dogs. Give your dog meaty bones to clean their teeth without all the crap
Bones are great until about the age of 6, at which point the teeth start to become brittle and can chip. I give my little girl slices of frozen cow femur, pure joy and great for teeth and gums. Once doggo gets along in years, denta-stix are great - they work, and they don't seem to be poisonous. They are not food. One a day is plenty.
Check out pro-den plaque off. It’s an enzymatic powder you add to their food. After 3-4 weeks I could just scrape the plaque off with my finger. With that and giving chew toys covered with enzymatic toothpaste once a week my 7 & 10 ur old pups have very little plaque
Your pet will love this Nylabone Advanced Oral Care Dog Dental Water Additive, 32-oz bottle: https://app.chewy.com/DLzbIbgEyrb
I bought it with my Chewy order!
The best way to remove tartar is with a dental cleaning. Otherwise brushing daily is the next best thing. I would never recommend chipping away with dental picks. It's very easy to damage the gums and teeth, and you are not addressing the main issue of bacteria under the gum line. You can also check out the veterinary oral health council, they have a list (vohc.org) of approved products, food, treat, and water additives that are deemed safe and at least minimally effective against tartar and plaque.
You can also give your dog something good the chew on like frozen fish or bones ( bones that haven't been heat treated!) This probably won't removed the buildup but it will prevent it if you give them it every other day or something like that
My vet just recommended a water additive to help with tartar buildup. My 3 dogs do NOT tolerate me brushing their teeth.
I only just started using it, like within the last week, but I bought the Nylabone Advanced Oral Care Liquid Tartar Remover. It has a definite minty smell and my 3 dogs were wary of it the first day but they got over that quickly when they realized they were thirsty. No adverse side effects that I've seen yet.
Our dogs love them, but my wife tells me they are too many calories and don’t have real benefit to the dogs teeth.
Our vet who just did our dog's dental work and has been a vet for 15 years+ specifically recommended a daily dental chew like these. Not necessarily these brand or this calorie count, but nonetheless.
Is your wife a vet?
(Fair enough, tho… I don’t give my dogs treats bc they’re good for them … I give them treats bc they’re the GOODEST dogs!)
No we are both Anesthetist, so we spend a lot of time in people’s mouths. We try not to feed our dogs before bed, sugars/carbohydrates that are left in the mouth create an acidic environment when digested by salivary amylase leading to tooth decay.
We see the same phenomenon with children (who after brushing snack at night, have milk or juices) when we do anesthesia for dental extractions.
An adult neutered 40 pound dog should be consuming 986 kcal, this treat is 91kcal. Close to 10% of their dietary calorie intake. You can certainly give these to your dog, my wife is very concerned with preserving our dog’s dental longevity, so we avoid them at night.

Yep my vet told me the same! We used to give these to our dog everyday
We call them brush teeths. Our 3 pups love them!
Do you brush their teeth then follow up with one of these?
How do these compare to greenies? My guy is a bit of an aggressive chewer even though he’s only 30lbs.
They'd prob be good for 30lb
Mine is 70 and tbh I think they're a bit small (box says he can have 2 but that doesn't exactly size them up since it's the chewing thats supposed to brush) but he loves them and has no issues and these are way cheaper than brand name.
I mostly just use them as his big special treat
Lol! We call it dog crack too! Our dogs go psycho over these things. I literally texted my husband last week…..911 WE ARE OUT OF DOG CRACK STOP AT COSTCO! Crisis averted!
I had to give these away -they made one of mine sick and the other didn't like them -but my friend's dogs ate them without incident after I gave her the rest of the bag.
Yep, our dog gets them after his last time being let out for the evening. He runs into the kitchen and stares at the cupboard they are in.
Qubic is coming
Do you give them to your pups? Which ones? Duncan is only 6 mo but I want to do what I can for his teeth.
How is that even a real dog? Lol greenies or ones made in the USA without a lot of junk in them.
My 1st thought: stuffies don’t eat chewies! ☺️
We give whimzees.
Whimzees are a good one. They tend to last a while
Yak cheese chews and bully sticks are good options too.
Geez…from head to toe, this is the most beautiful York I have ever seen. What a coat…what colors…awesome!!!
Thank you for saying that. He’s a Biewer Terrier, a very special kind of Yorkie
I do on occasion. Greenies (Teenies).
I give mine the pedigree dentastix
I would say anything they chew can be considered somewhat good for their teeth. If he is a power chewer I recommend deer antlers. I have also recommended to people here before to go to goughnuts.com and buy them the hardest chew toy they sell (red and black I think), they have lasted quite a long time with my pittie crew.
He has some west paw toys (they are basically a rubber toy) that he plays with and chews regularly. Not sure why he doesn't destroy them but will absolutely demolish others. He has no interest in his kongs. Antlers are a good thought, but due to his age and him already having some dental issues I'm worried about him breaking teeth. We started using water additives because the vet said it helps due to the enzymes. We are also training for teeth brushing since our vet said that was the gold standard but that's going to be a bit because he's stubborn 🤣
Just a heads up, while deer antlers do hold up well and I’ve never met a dog who didn’t love them. They also regularly break dogs teeth because they are too hard. Anything the dog chews should have some give to it.
I’ve never seen a dental chew last more then a few minutes. Even with my one very gentle chewer.
That being said I get Kirkland dental chews from Costco. They are not enzymatic but they do offer an abrasive chew that does clean the teeth. Here it’s 72 count for $24. It also is chicken free which is rare (my dog is allergic). They are similar to Merricks fresh kisses ingredient wise if I remember correct, but cheaper.
You can also look into Vetriscience dental chews. I have not used it for my dogs, but my vet told me to try the cat version and they love them. We are using them specifically because one cat will need a cleaning next year and the vet hopes this will make it so it can be in two years instead
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look into it. My boy just got what is likely his second cleaning ever (we rescued him 2 years ago and he was in really poor shape so I doubt he ever had one before us) this time they found he had gum overgrowth that created pockets and trapped food, hair and all kinds of junk. They also found that when he had teeth extracted last year they (a different vet not our current one) left roots. So he had to have them excised and his gums cut back along with his cleaning. I just want to try to not have to have surgery again for a while. He's had to have some kind of surgery every 6 months since his adoption 😭.
Aww dang. That must be stressful. But you are giving him a chance for a good life now! So hopefully you are through the hurdles
My girl is a power chewer too. Right now we have the Kirkland brand dental chews from Costco, but if you're looking for something with VOHC approval, look at Whimzees. Theyre a little tougher than some other dental chews I've seen. They'll still go through them pretty quick, but it took my girl 10 minutes instead of 5.
We use Whimzees all the time the vet just said that they are great for abrasive chewing and a treat but don't have the enzymes. Honestly though I'm not so sure I'm worried about it that much after thinking about it over night because we are brushing his teeth with enzymatic toothpaste and using water additives.
Ark Naturals brushless extreme clean.
Side note: you can put a chew in the freezer for an hour or two before giving it to the pup. It slows down the power chewers a bit.
Those look interesting! Thanks for the recommendation. I love that they are abrasive and have toothpaste that they chew.
ProDen Plaque Off Products are also certified by the VOHC. You can buy them on Chewy.
Thanks I'll look into those! I like that they are certified and that they are made from normal food products making them completely digestible. I wouldn't have the same worry with them that I have with the virbac chews. These are also more affordable than the Whimzees I buy for him. The vet said the Whimzees were fine as a treat but there were no enzymes so no dental hygiene benefits. I'd prefer the chew treats to have some benefits for dental if he's getting the extra calories.

Boosting for visibility for this sweet pup Journey
Good morning everyone! Our Berner pup is 5 1/2 months and over 50 pounds now. She's a little too big for the daily dental treats made for most puppies, but of course she's still a puppy. A lot of the larger dental treats specify that they are for the adult life stage. Does anyone have any dental chews they've found that are a good size for large breed puppies or that are meant for adult dogs that a vet has oked for large breed pups?
I'm not sure if I didn't communicate this well in my post, but I'm specifically looking for a daily dental treat meant for large breed puppies, not chews that last long (I don't really care how long it lasts). I just want something that is large enough for a puppy over 50 pounds that has been approved for puppies and not only meant for adult dogs for daily dental maintenance, to be given once a day. We give our 4 year old husky a daily dental treat in the morning; I'm looking for something I can give to our "little" girl at the same time since she has outgrown the whimzees meant for puppies.
Greenies Large are the best I’ve found. My dog loves them and made a noticeable difference in his teeth
This is the answer
In response to this pretty much any chewing that your dog does will be good for their teeth, but if you’re really really concerned about dental health, get them used to brushing their teeth, and maybe try a water additive! Large breed dogs aren’t as susceptible to the dental tartar buildup until about two years old it’s the small dogs and small breeds that you really really need to worry about. That being said getting a good Headstart, is never a bad idea.
I do also brush her teeth with an enzyme toothpaste, luckily she seems to like it. That was a mistake we made with our other dog was not starting that soon enough because he won't tolerate it, so I started right away with her.
I'm not like super concerned about her teeth, getting a dental treat is just part of the morning routine for our dogs and I wanted to find one that's okay for her until she's an adult. Our other dog loves getting his "toothbrush", and I'll feel bad if he gets one and she doesn't in the morning ha.
Benebones have been great for both of ours. Boy just had a dental checkup at 3 yrs old and teeth were in great shape and very little plaque buildup. Good luck!
Bully sticks, stuffed tracheas (I use wet dog food and freeze them), frozen kongs, nylabone (there are edible versions but ai stick to the plasticky texture), benebones, dehydrated meat slices (petsmart sells actual prime slices they go quick but are great to stick out of a frozen kong or a quick snack), be careful with some of the rawhide free treats many of them don’t last long and upset Berner tummies, stay away from any rawhide in my opinion too likely for a foreign body and tummy issues. I also don’t like antlers or any real bone because they tend to fracture teeth/or the chew itself fractures apart and that’ll get expensive down the road 😞. Trust me I learned that the hard way with my other dog.
Try beef cheeks, they last a long time! You can get them at higher end pet food stores, I think even Amazon too! (Depending on where you are)
Ours really liked baseboards and our couch, but hose seemed to work best for him!
Thats crazy! Mine LOVES extension cords, chargers, and any cord thats important
They’re just giant goobers!

best dog dental chews
Key Considerations for Dog Dental Chews:
Ingredients: Look for chews made from natural ingredients without artificial additives. High-quality proteins and whole food ingredients are preferable.
Size and Texture: Choose chews that are appropriate for your dog's size and chewing habits. Softer chews are better for small dogs, while larger, tougher chews are suitable for bigger breeds.
Dental Benefits: Opt for chews specifically designed to promote dental health, such as those that help reduce plaque and tartar buildup.
Caloric Content: Be mindful of the caloric content of the chews to avoid overfeeding. Look for low-calorie options if your dog is on a diet.
Veterinary Approval: Consider chews that have been endorsed by veterinarians or have the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal of approval.
Recommendations:
Greenies: These are highly popular and come in various sizes. They are designed to clean teeth and freshen breath while being palatable for most dogs.
Virbac C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews: These chews are effective in reducing plaque and tartar and are made with a unique enzymatic formula.
Nylabone DuraChew: Ideal for aggressive chewers, these durable chews help clean teeth and satisfy your dog's natural urge to chew.
Zuke's Z-Bones: These are grain-free, made with natural ingredients, and are designed to help freshen breath and clean teeth.
Choosing the right dental chew can significantly contribute to your dog's oral health, so consider your dog's preferences and needs when selecting a product.
