TL;DR Consider brands like Hydro Flask, Klean Kanteen, and Nalgene for durable, eco-friendly options. Secondhand purchases can also be a sustainable choice.
Popular Brands
Several popular brands are recommended for their durability and eco-friendly attributes. Hydro Flask is frequently mentioned for its excellent insulation and durability, although it may not be dishwasher safe [1:5]
[5:3]. Klean Kanteen offers stainless steel options that are easy to clean and have less chipping compared to other brands
[2:2]
[3:1]. Nalgene bottles are praised for being virtually indestructible and lightweight, with some models made from recycled plastic
[2:1].
Secondhand Options
Purchasing secondhand water bottles is an eco-friendly alternative that reduces demand for new manufacturing and packaging. Thrift stores often carry reusable bottles, including popular brands like Hydro Flask and Nalgene [1:9]
[3:3]. This option is not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective.
Durability and Features
For those seeking durable and versatile bottles, Yeti and Zojirushi are highly recommended. Yeti bottles maintain temperature well, even in extreme conditions, and are noted for their straightforward design [1:6]
[5:11]. Zojirushi bottles are praised for their large capacity and ease of cleaning, featuring lids that can be used as cups
[5:6]. Both brands offer replaceable parts and secure lids to prevent leakage
[5:7].
Innovative Designs
For those interested in innovative designs, the Larq self-cleaning bottle was mentioned as a solution for avoiding moldy smells [2:4]. The Owala Free Sip offers versatility with its dual drinking mechanism, though some users have reported issues with spills
[4:6]
[5:5].
Additional Considerations
When choosing a water bottle, consider factors such as insulation, ease of cleaning, and lid complexity. Simple designs tend to be more reliable and less prone to leaks [5:10]. Additionally, exploring eco-friendly retailers like EarthHero can provide more sustainable options
[3:4].
I desperately need to buy a water bottle but am trying to make more ethical purchases (fair trade, little to no excess packaging etc. . .) What brands would you guys recommend?
I love my life factory water bottles! They are glass so dishwasher safe and they don't leave any aftertaste. They have a silicone outer bit that is removable and plastic lids. They have a variety of lids to choose from which is nice and they can be purchased separately (which I just found out because my dog thought one lid was a chew toy).
I bought mine at Bed, Bath and Beyond at least 8 years ago, so no trash beyond the tag on my end, but no clue how they ship stuff.
They say they manufacture responsibly on their website, but not really sure to what extent they mean, haha.
The only downside is it is heavier than a plastic bottle would be.
greengem.ca has some great eco-friendly water bottle options I find
You "find" that your own site has great options?
If the second hand option doesn’t work out, I have a HydroFlask with a sports cap and it’s one of my most favorite possessions. I use it every single day and it’s so well made I can have ice in it one day and the next day when I go to clean it, the ice is still there!
Hydroflask is amazing.
The Simple Modern water bottles on Amazon are basically the exact same as hydroflask but half the price. I have both and can’t tell the difference!
Yeti because they’re straight cylinders, open easily, and above all else are dishwasher safe
Have you thought of looking for a secondhand one first? I do that a lot, since that way it's something that's already been manufactured/no packaging and it might have been thrown away otherwise. (also cheaper - always a win!)
Yeah I have thought of that! That's how I do most of my other shopping. Just thought this would be a good opportunity for to do some more research and find some good brands.
Cool! I got a nalgene bottle secondhand about seven or eight years ago and it's still in great shape. I don't know anything about the company but the bottle itself seems solid.
Also, now that reusable bottles are trending, that means many more end up at the thrift store. I've seen so many company giveaway ones but also some that were probably unwanted or forgotten Christmas/birthday gifts.
Some of the more popular, and thus more prolific, brands are Klean Kanteen, Hyrdo Flask, and S'well, but there isn't much difference between them. I would say it comes down to personal preference, if you want metal or plastic, insulated or not, cap preference (push spout or wide or skinny screw top) and then finally size and color.
There are so many brands out there, its confusing. What water bottle do you use and recommend? I'm looking for something durable, ethically made, and easy to clean (preferably no bottle brush needed).
I've been using a 12oz glass jar but would like to upgrade to something lighter and holds more water.
I love my yeti. 10 years and still works great, and with less chipping than my Klean kanteen, which chipped like crazy. Expensive but 100% worth it!
I have a Yeti! It’s pretty expensive, but not more then a hydroflask. But it’s extremely durable! It will keep ice in it even if left in my car for 12+ hours in the Arizona summer
I’m looking to eventually buy the self cleaning Larq one. It’s pretty dope and I’m sick of moldy smells in my water bottle
Pour boiling water in!
NALGENE! They are plastic but they are recyclable, and they recently have a line of product made from recycled plastic. They are virtually indestructible and super light to carry around. It is also much more affordable than the other “hip” brands and if you take care of it it can last forever. If you don’t worry too much about insulation, it is a pretty decent start!
If you want insulating ones and something that look more sleek, RTIC has really good ones with many colors. They are made of stainless steel and WAY MORE CHEAPER THAN HYDROFLASK AND YETI. Mine kept hot drinks hot for 6 hours and cold for 8+ hours. Never leaks and as chic as the other big names. They work as good as the expensive brands without the price tag.
Unfortunately I think any bottle you are gonna use as water bottle require bottle brush to clean throughly.
Hello,
I have been using 1-use water bottles since I've been on my own. I religiously recycle. I can fill up half a bin of recyclables by the time trash day gets here but I only have 2 tiny bags a week of trash-trash.
I am religious about recycling the bottles. I'll even take them home from work to ensure I can put them in recycling at home. I can't take the empty water bottles anymore. I get a floor board full of them in my car, my neighbor share my bin now, so often I have to hoard the recycling longer in my home.
It's becoming too much. I had a mini break down today and I felt horrendous but had to toss about 15 bottles in the trash at the car wash. I never do it.
I'd like to purchase 6, bottles I can use that are like water bottles. At this point, even if I use them for awhile, and then recycle those..and restart..it's better than my current stitch. I can't do glass. They need to also fit into my lunch kit. Does a more durable water bottle exist?

You can find used stainless steel water bottles at thrift stores. Purchasing second hand shifts demand away from new manufacturing, and it usually costs less than purchasing new.
I would check out water bottles on EarthHero they sell many eco-friendly items. It is also a partner with the debit card I use called FutureCard that allows me to get 6% cashback with everything so I recommend checking it out.
I use something similar to these the brand i use is Klean Kanteen but do not see there bottles listed.

I’ve carried a water bottle with me since my early childhood years, so I know the value of a good bottle. Below is my current water bottle lineup:
Two things I’m trying to address here:
A. I feel that I have too many bottles, and that there’s room to create overlap in these categories. Ideally, I’d like to have the fewest number of bottles that can service my daily life, hobbies, etc.
B. Over the past year, I have made a concerted effort to examine my plastics usage (mostly for health/hormone purposes) and try to replace highly-used items with metal alternatives.
The current lineup has a lot of plastic in it. I’ve read that the Nalgene HDPEs are pretty safe (as far as plastics go) so I’m inclined to hang onto those for my hiking/bikepacking needs because it allows me to carry so much water when necessary. I love the Gatorade bottles for riding, as they’re so easy to grab and squeeze — but again, likely filled with problematic plastics (they’re both pretty old too).
I’ve been eyeing the Black + Blum Explorer bottle (28oz.) for my everyday carry, as it can also mount to a bike cage for commutes and easy riding. Anyone have any recommendations for my “water bottle lineup”??
I'm a baseball parent so we perpetually have too many water bottles.
I recently did a purge, but it's still too much. I need to let go of my emotional support Nalgenes. I've been thinking of getting rid of all of them and getting one of the skinny Klean Kanteen ones because my work bag doesn't fit a larger bottle.
Plastic water bottle reuse already diverts you away from most of the microplastics for ingestion through water- they diffuse out during water storage and you likely empty your bottles to clean them between use.
I just recently switched to a stainless steel blender bottle. I use it for water, electrolyte mix, and protein. Since it's metal, it doesn't hold the flavor of anything. My old plastic one used to taste like fruit no matter how many times I washed it.
Same I have one fr simple modern that's my everything bottle
These are my favorite because they are so easy to clean and no nonsense. I think they are underrated.
I’ve recently started using an Owalla water bottle too and it’s pretty great. I really like that you can use the straw or tip it to drink from it.
I have two metal ones (a large and a small) for regular use, one plastic bottle that fits in my bike’s bottle cage, and three metal tumblers of various shapes/sizes. I feel like this is a good amount for me personally.
I like that you’re considering one that works for both daily use and for cycling. If I were in the market for one I’d definitely consider a good bottle that can do both.
The Owala Free Sip can be sipped with its straw or turned and used more like a chug lid so that might be an option for replacing the bike riding option.
I'm finally ready to stop buying plastic water bottles and invest in a good reusable one. There are so many options out there that I'm feeling overwhelmed, also I know there are old posts about this asking for the best water bottle but they are from a year ago or more so looking for updated info.
Looking for something:
Not too much to ask right?
Budget is around $30-40 but flexible for the right bottle. What do you use and recommend? Any brands to avoid?
My absolute favorite water bottle, and I've bought them all over the years
So happy to hear this! As an avid hiker with dogs, I have a bunch of hydroflask with the wide mouth since the tops are interchangeable.
My only peeve is they aren’t dishwasher safe (cleaning tabs work well) & some of the tops are a pain to break apart & clean.
Hydroflask is also my favorite by a close margin.
I don't like Owala because 2 times the damn bottle fell the top opened and it spilled the water, that has never happened with the other bottles. We still use it occasionally.
I agree. My specific series of zojirushi I used is : SF-CC20 XA. it has capacity of 2L, so my minimum daily water intake already taken care of and the opening of the bottle are large enough for my asian hand to insert, so very easy to clean. No need for separate glass because the lid can be usable as bowl/glass to drink.
I have an owala and a zojirushi. Both are durable and mostly metal, and have replaceable parts. They’re double wall insulated and both cover the drinking mechanism completely. Each also have a locking mechanism to prevent spillage while in a bag.
I will say that Owala comes in more colors if that’s your thing, but the zojirushi is much lighter to carry.
pretty much any stainless steel insulated bottle will be the same in terms of durability.
The more complex the cap, the more likely it is to fail/leak.
I would get a simple steel insulated bottle, and a aftermarket steel lid (with silicone ring) if you’re rlly worried about leakage.
I got sucked in to Hyvee’s pretty hydro flask display one day and bought one for $36 and it’s an awesome water bottle.
If our Owala's fail, I'll have to try the hydro flask next time. At this time, I am still loving our Owala's.
I have a hydro flask and a yeti. The yeti is superior by far in keeping items chilled. I can leave that thing in my very hot car while hiking in the summer and it will still have ice in it when I get back.
I would get a water bottle with an easy-to-open/close lid. Some water bottles (the cheap ones) have tops with very fine threads, and only 1 spiral. The better bottles like Kleen Kanteen have bigger threads and several spirals, so you can easily screw on the top no matter the orientation.
i use my coffee thermostat as a water bottle. best part its my dads old one and its +20 years old. Still holds cold well

For me it’s the CamelBak Chute Mag .75L
Nalgene is pretty good and they last forever
Just ordered an orange Nalgene bottle, they look great aswel!
You could always do a sturdy glass bottle, if you're not afraid of breaking it.
My sister says some will even come with silicon bottoms to help if you set it down hard.
Well, you can get glass or hard plastic/silicone
I use a hard plastic one gifted to me, but I’m planning on upgrading soon

So as much as I hate to say it, a good, durable plastic water bottle is probably your best bet. I understand the concern about plastic pollution, but I have like 3 reusable plastic water bottles that I’ve used for the past 8 years that have probably prevented me from buying hundreds of disposable water bottles.
I think I’ll give plastic a try then
Need recs for a new water bottle. My glass one broke and I will probably avoid glass for my next (hopefully permanent) one. Thank you!
Nalgene are pretty solid and have a lifetime warranty, also made in the US.
Plus you’ll never wonder where to put those loose stickers anymore!
I also have a Nalgene, a wide mouth one. So far it lasts and still looks goods. The best accessory I bought was a wide to narrow mouth adapter (a Humangear capCAP) - easy to clean through the wide mouth while also easy to drink out of the small one spill-free.
Hey, have you had a look on r/BuyItForLife ? If you search water bottle, looks like Nalgene comes up the winner for a lot of people on there!
Hydroflask. Keeps drinks hot or cold.
Metal are nice, but I'm not huge on metal taste always. I have a nalgene that has served me well for a long time (long as you don't lost it, you're good!).
Do know that if you want a nearly indestructible nalgene, get the translucent white one (usually comes with a blue lid). The clearer ones are more brittle, and will eventually break after a few falls. I've broken at least one, and I know several others who have broken them. But the white ones last much better, as it's a softer plastic!
I know they're trendy but I've had my Kleen Canteen 40oz stainless steel bottle fire many years and it's never let me down. Use it almost daily.
I just got mine a month ago and I love it to death!
I know a guy who’s had his for I think 20 or so years and it goes with him everywhere. He’s allegedly dropped it down and entire flight of concrete stairs and it’s only got dents. They’re practically indestructible and the non-plated ones can even be put in a fire to boil water
Was going to comment this exact same thing. It’s covered in dents, but it hasn’t let me down yet either
I have been using this bottle - https://www.tupperware.com/shop/on-the-go/water-bottles.html for years now but is it really eco friendly? I always see you lot advocating for an aluminium one instead!
I have a few (reusable) plastic water bottles. It took me years to find a reusable water bottle that I liked and met all of my needs.
I've had metal ones and I just haven't liked them. The lack of a flip top/straw (for driving/working out) is a huge turnoff for me, and to me, the water tastes funny when in metal. I just can't get over the aftertaste that metal water bottles give you.
Make it last. If you buy a reusable plastic water bottle, but it only gets used for a couple months before it starts cracking - then you're making things worse.
But if you can find a good quality one that lasts for years, then you are helping.
This is where r/zerowaste and r/frugal come together.
You're still using reusable for several months. Should you buy a poorly made water bottle time amd again, no. Are you making things worse by cutting down on your consumption of bottled water? Absolutely not.
Just as an aside: thrift stores around me always have dozens of bottles of all kinds.
This is a great idea. We use stainless steel bottles for on the go, but I really prefer cups with straw/lids for chores at home (cats... what can I say they knock everything over. Break glass & f up steel bottles.). I bet the thrift stores will have cups too. Thanks!
Check the materials it is made out of and how long do they last before breaking down. If you have had for years it is probably starting to wear of and leaving microplastics in your water. But if the info tou find says it lasts for 20 years there is no need to buy another one yet.
It already exists and you already have it. The most ecologically responsible thing you can do is NOT buy anything new and keep using what already exists.
If you aren't drinking hot drinks, it shouldn't be a big deal to have a plastic bottle.
Switching to a metal bottle is more about your own health (avoiding plastic) than environmentalism.
Also, be careful about aluminium bottles if the aluminium is on the inside.
Aluminium is reactive so you don't want to keep anything acidic in it, like orange juice or lemon water. There might be some kind of resin lining, but that could have plasticizers or it could be scratched or scraped, exposing the aluminium. I'd suggest a stainless steel bottle over aluminium.
I drink a lot of water and I was wondering if anyone knew of any relatively cheap 1ltr bottles?
:)
hydro flask makes pretty big ones and they're pretty easy to find in stores to avoid shipping. I know I've seen them at Target, Walmart, Marshall's, and Ross
u/hyper_ginge Takeya is similar to hydroflask but cheaper. If you are in the US they are sold at Costco
I would get one that doesn’t have a soft mouthpiece, I’ve found they tend to get moldy
Thank you! I'll look online, I'm from the UK so don't have Costco but thank you:)
I too prefer drinking from glass but it’s too heavy for me to carry. It’s leak proof & 750 ml but just not good for me outside the house.
You can get some really good ones online that have silicone covers. Amazon seem to have to good ones, I’d look there first. Or if you have a tk maxx near you , I got mine from there.
I like kleen lantern brand. I've been using mine for years.
I bought a gallon growler from a local brewery. It's glass.
my husband needed to buy water the other day and showed up with a “smart water” brand bottle made from aluminum.
he said it was $2 and he got it because it wasnt plastic. it is 1.13 L/18 oz., tall and thin with a screw top of aluminum.
i’ve been using all week - fits great in my purse and i’ll probably have for a very long time.
Best eco-friendly water bottles
Key Considerations for Eco-Friendly Water Bottles:
Material: Look for bottles made from sustainable materials such as stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free recycled plastic. Stainless steel and glass are durable and can be reused for years.
Insulation: If you prefer your drinks to stay hot or cold, consider insulated bottles. Double-walled stainless steel options can keep beverages at the desired temperature for hours.
Design and Functionality: Choose a bottle that fits your lifestyle. Features like a wide mouth for easy filling and cleaning, a leak-proof lid, and a carrying handle can enhance usability.
Size and Capacity: Depending on your hydration needs, select a size that suits your daily activities. Common sizes range from 12 oz to 32 oz.
Brand Sustainability Practices: Research brands that prioritize sustainability in their manufacturing processes and packaging. Look for certifications or commitments to reducing plastic waste.
Recommendations:
Hydro Flask: Known for its durable stainless steel construction and excellent insulation, Hydro Flask bottles come in various sizes and colors, making them both functional and stylish.
Klean Kanteen: This brand offers a range of stainless steel bottles that are lightweight, durable, and free from harmful chemicals. They also have a commitment to environmental responsibility.
S'well: S'well bottles are not only aesthetically pleasing but also made from high-quality stainless steel with triple-layer insulation, keeping drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12 hours.
Nalgene (BPA-Free): If you prefer plastic, Nalgene offers BPA-free options made from recycled materials, which are lightweight and durable for outdoor activities.
Choosing any of these options will help reduce single-use plastic waste while keeping you hydrated in an eco-friendly way!
