What Redditors are Saying

Best Educational LEGO Sets

TL;DR

  • Biomedicine Institute LEGO set is a popular choice for engaging kids and adults in science.
  • STEM micro builds are appreciated, though some suggest improvements.

Biomedicine Institute LEGO Set

The Biomedicine Institute LEGO set has been gaining traction among science enthusiasts. This set is designed to engage both kids and adults in biomedical science through a detailed representation of labs, microscopes, biology, and research [1][2][3]. The set includes diverse figurines representing different genders and colors, which promotes inclusivity and representation in science [1:2][1:4]. The design also features playful elements like coffee mugs and donuts, illustrating the long hours spent in labs [3:2][3:3].

Community Support and Feedback

The community has shown strong support for the Biomedicine Institute set, with many users expressing their love for the design and voting for it on the LEGO Ideas platform [3:4][4:1]. Some users have suggested uploading the design to platforms like Rebrickable for wider access, although this is not currently possible [4:2][4:4].

STEM Micro Builds

Another popular educational LEGO theme is STEM micro builds, which are enjoyed by educators and students alike. These sets are used in various educational settings, from U.S. history classrooms to university courses [5:2][5:3]. While these sets are appreciated, some users have pointed out inaccuracies, such as the helicity of DNA models, suggesting room for improvement [5:1][5:4].

Recommendations Beyond the Discussions

For those interested in educational LEGO sets, consider exploring other themes like robotics or engineering, which can provide hands-on learning experiences. Additionally, LEGO Education offers specialized kits designed for classroom use, focusing on subjects like coding and physics.

🧬🔬Dear fellows science lovers, please review the Biomedicine Institute — a brick-built tribute to labs, microscopes, biology and research.

A new way to engage kids and adults in biomedical science. With enough support, it could become a real LEGO set!

Hope you like it... All support is greatly appreciated! ... Thanks a lot 🧪🥼

I am aware of the reposting, thanks a lot to those already supported it 🙏🏼❤️

Cute! Makes my inner nerd happy.

I noticed the figurines are almost all male though, is that true? I would like to see more representation of all genders in all fields, no need to indoctrinate kids in any direction.

Thanks, glad you like it! 4 women and 3 men in the build but it can be expanded and personalized as you wish. I actually made the point in my update 1 to the lego idea...have a look, I am sure you will appreciate it 😉

Cool to hear from the designer here, I already found (and voted for) the set some time ago. Really love the artwork on the walls. The coffee mug in the lab though…

Sets to buy if just getting into lego

Posted by Brasso90 · in r/lego · 6 years ago

So I'm a Male adult with no kids just wanting to get my hands on some lego after seeing lego masters (damn that advertising works).

Are there any suggestions for any specific sets I should look into more than others? Are the classic sets worth it?

Any feedback is appreciated.

I think that the creator expert modulars are pretty fantastic diving in for adults sets, they're both challenging, and a ton of fun. Even as an adult both the Ninjago city and Ninjago docks sets were absolutely fantastic and full of fun little building tricks and Easter eggs. And always check your interests and see what kind of sets they have in those, cars, comic books, movies, cartoons (the Ghostbusters fire house and Voltron come to mind)

I have fallen in love with architecture!

Look fantastic on display. Not too big. Nice and challenging. Interesting techniques.

I stayed away for too long due to my misconception that "it's all smaller parts, won't be as fun as playable sets. " I was SO wrong!

Follow your interest and trust yourself to know what you will like. Do you like cars? Motorcycles? Space? Ninjas? StarWars? Fire trucks? Princesses? Helicopters? Dinosaurs? Jungles? Trains? Christmas? Architecture? Do you want to follow the instructions, and do something tactile and relaxing? Or do you want to freely build a new and creative thing all on your own?

If you answer some of these questions, I might be able to guide you better.

9 upvotes on reddit
Brasso90 · OP · 6 years ago

I suppose Wild west, dinosaurs, jungles would be cool. Also don't mind the look of the city type buildings.

I feel like following instructions would be a good start for me since it's been a long time since playing with Lego however I also wouldn't mind doing some free builds on my own which is why I'm thinking do I buy a specific set followed by a classic kit to compliment it?

Get the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom sets. They're about to be out of stores, and all of them are nice little builds. The T-Rex one comes with a nice dinosaur transport vehicle, and the mansion in the Indoraptor one is a great setpiece. Also, there's a Jurassic Park one that's pretty fun. After all those, I'd say get the Jurassic World Indominus Rex Breakout (set # 75919) and them save for the new ones coming out this fall, plus the new visitors center that's soon to come around.

Best educational LEGO sets

Key Considerations for Educational LEGO Sets:

  1. Age Appropriateness: Ensure the set is suitable for the child's age. LEGO sets often have recommended age ranges that indicate complexity and safety.

  2. Learning Objectives: Look for sets that promote specific skills such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills.

  3. Building Complexity: Consider whether the set offers a challenge that matches the child's skill level. Some sets are designed for beginners, while others are more advanced.

  4. Interactivity: Sets that include motors, sensors, or programmable elements can enhance learning through hands-on experience and experimentation.

  5. Thematic Relevance: Choose sets that align with the child's interests (e.g., robotics, architecture, or vehicles) to keep them engaged and motivated.

Recommended Educational LEGO Sets:

  1. LEGO Education SPIKE Prime: Ideal for older children (ages 10+), this set combines LEGO building with programming and robotics, allowing kids to create and code interactive models.

  2. LEGO Boost Creative Toolbox: Suitable for ages 7-12, this set introduces coding through building and programming robots, offering a fun way to learn about technology.

  3. LEGO Architecture Sets: Great for older kids and teens, these sets allow builders to recreate famous landmarks while learning about architecture and design principles.

  4. LEGO Classic Creative Bricks: Perfect for younger children (ages 4+), this set encourages open-ended play and creativity, helping develop fine motor skills and imaginative thinking.

  5. LEGO Mindstorms EV3: A more advanced option for ages 10+, this robotics kit allows kids to build and program their own robots, integrating engineering and coding skills.

Recommendation: For a well-rounded educational experience, the LEGO Education SPIKE Prime is highly recommended due to its focus on STEM learning, hands-on building, and coding capabilities. It provides a comprehensive platform for kids to explore robotics and engineering concepts in a fun and engaging way.
