Best LEGO Sets for Girls

LEGO Friends and Disney Princess Sets

For young girls, especially those around 6 years old, the LEGO Friends range is highly recommended. These sets are designed with vibrant colors and themes that appeal to many young girls [1:2]. The LEGO Disney range is also popular, featuring characters and scenes from beloved movies such as "The Little Mermaid" and "Moana," which could be a great fit given your niece's interests [1:5]. Specific sets like the "Princess Enchanted Journey" and "Rapunzel’s Tower" are mentioned as appealing options in the $45-$65 price range [1:6].

Alternative Brick Brands

While LEGO is often preferred, alternative brands like Jaki, Gudi, and Cogo offer compatible brick sets at potentially lower prices. These brands also have sets tailored for girls, such as Cogo's Girls series [1:1]. However, if your niece specifically wants LEGO to match her friends' collections, sticking with LEGO might be best [1:8].

Sets for Older Girls

For older girls who might have outgrown the LEGO Friends series, there are several other options. For example, art-themed sets like famous paintings or prints can be engaging [2:1]. If she enjoys technical builds, consider sets with moving parts or more complex structures, such as those found in the LEGO Technic or Creator Expert lines [2:2]. Additionally, the LEGO Botanical Collection has been popular among female collectors [5:2].

Creative and Customizable Options

For a more creative approach, consider the LEGO Creator 3-in-1 sets, which allow for multiple build options from a single set, providing flexibility and encouraging creativity [3:2]. Additionally, exploring retired sets through platforms like Bricklink can provide unique building experiences without breaking the bank [2:7].

Adult Female Collectors

For adult women interested in LEGO, botanical and animal-themed sets are popular choices [5:2]. Many female collectors enjoy creating detailed displays with these sets, sometimes expanding into custom builds or themed villages [5:4].

ORIGINAL POST

Need to get a gift for my niece's birthday next month and I want to get her a set or two of LEGO. Her parents are pretty traditional so it has to be of the "girly" variety. I know LEGO has some Disney sets and such, anything princessy would be welcome.

Preferably - some animals included, not too huge. It seems like this community is friendly and has knowledgeable people so I'd appreciate any suggestions. If it matters, she really liked the new red panda movie from Disney (?) and loves Little Mermaid and Moana.

As a couple of other posters have said, check out the Lego Friends range. Lots of good stuff in there, highly recommended for young girls around that age (such as my own): https://www.lego.com/en-gb/themes/friends

Otherwise on the Lego site just search for their Disney range and pick something that fits with the movies you said she likes: https://www.lego.com/en-gb/themes/disney

Does it HAVE to be Lego? There are some alt-brick sets that are a lot cheaper and as good and also have girly sets, like JAK-JK2103 Like sets from Jaki, Gudi and Cogo also have more generic kids-line, but Cogo also has a Girls series (like Cogo 4544 or COG-3262). All fully compatible with Lego

Yeah, she was specifically saying Lego, because I think some of her friends have sets and she's asking for that one. Not sure what sets her friends have, but I assume it's fine if the gift matches theirs.

I see.
Alrighty then. This is a bit of unknown territory for me but, heck, if you know where to look.
On Bricklink there is a listing which shows you all the sets of a specific series
I picked the Disney and Friends categories, sorted by year, newest first
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?pg=1&catString=878&sortBy=Y&sortAsc=A&catType=S&v=1
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?pg=1&catString=771&catType=S&v=1 From those recently released i'd say  43216 Princess Enchanted Journey should meet those criteria best, but i believe with those 2 lists you could narrow it down.

There are a few brand new Disney princess sets in the $45-$65 range,m either just release or about to be, including Rapunzel’a Tower and Princess Enchanted Travel. If you want to splurge, there are three castle sets in the $90-$100 range.

RasendeGurke · 2 years ago

Depending on region and budget the Friends series has some good sets, usually you can find sales for them somewhere. I doubt there is red-specific sets, but there's a decent amount for the usual princesses.

Set suggestions for girls that aren't interested in cars?

Posted by EndoLady · in r/legotechnic · 1 month ago

Hi, my 12yo has outgrown the Lego Friends sets. She likes building Lego, and likes the technical/automation side of things, but it seems like the Technic sets are aimed at more traditional 'boy' interests. My daughter is not at all interested in cars. What sets would you suggest we look at for her?

What kinds of stuff does she like?

If she likes paintings/art, there are several famous painting or print sets. I liked the Great Wave set, and there are others.

If she likes architecture, there are dozens or hundreds of various building sets.

If she likes history, something like the Colosseum could be fun.

The Titanic can be technical, or tie into the movie, or both.

If she likes dinosaurs, lots of Jurassic Park sets to enjoy. I like the fossil ones, but they also have sets of "live" dinos.

If she likes animals, there are neat animal sets. The Lion King has some, there are others with other animals (the parrots set has caught my eye recently) and so on.

Bugs? There are sets with bugs.

Flowers? There is a whole line of flower sets.

Space? Lots of space sets!

There's a whole lot out there.

There are also a few planes, helicopters and boats available. But the amount of non-cars had always been slim.

Lego Marvel Superheroes is the best and most relaxing LEGO game ever. It has the best character roster (not the biggest, but the best) the best story, amazing A list voice actors, fun puzzles, and if you like marvel in any way you’re bound to love it. And even if you don’t know really know marvel you’re bound to love it. I might add, this game was alot of people’s introduction to the fantastic four and X-men, it’s been known to make life long fans, like myself.

Welcome to the addiction. Be careful, you can get into a hell of a backlog really fast.

First tip, determine where and how you will display the sets you collect. Nothing worse than determining you have a perfect spot only to learn later that it's not the right size or that particular display stand is no longer in production, etc. Also, don't display in front of windows unless they have UV protection in/on them.

2nd tip, buy the sets that are about to retire from LEGO, before they retire. HP doesn't jump a ton in price after retirement, but they will be more expensive, especially the further from retired they become.

3rd tip, check out bricklink.com for all your lego needs. The site is clunky and not very user fri3ndly, but you can score some deals there for sure. Especially if you're looking for a certain figure, and not the whole settled came in.

4th tip, be patient in buying retired sets too. If you're patient. You can often find a better price from another seller, or you can find a lot with more than one set in it for example, I got pretty much the full 2018 wave, with boxes, for $150. They are used and need dusting and rebuilding. But the price is so good I couldn't pass it up. I have all these sets already, but having spare parts is never a bad thing.

5th tip, Check out rebrickable.com for alternative building directions. Lots of people design instructions for a wide variety of builds and you can buy the instructions from th3m to utilize your own parts for building. I know you said you just got into LEGO, so your misc parts won't be much, but you can see some of the build designs that you may want to do later on, and then search out the sets that go into that build.

6th tip, have way to much fun. Watch the films while you build. Take your time with each bag. Make little scenes in each build too. Dont be scared to make it your own style too. Move parts around. Switch figures with other sections. Etc.

6 upvotes on reddit
AnastasiaStarGall · OP · 4 months ago

Okay WOW! Thank you so much for all the tips! This is super helpful and so kind of you! I will definitely check out bricklink and rebrickable, they sound like really good resources. I have also been watching some videos and didn’t realise there was so much more to the LEGO world and community than I thought.

I have been looking on FB marketplace place for some retired sets so will make sure to be patient and really look for the best deals that I can find. I think a few of the HP sets will be retiring at the end of this year so I will definitely try to pick them up soon hopefully during some sales.

At the moment I don’t have a set area where I can display more than say 1-2 sets so I am thinking to do some rearranging and set up a proper place where I will have empty space ready for new sets. That way, like you said, I know what I can actually fit in the space I have, rather than find out later that it doesn’t fit properly.

I found out about there being certain versions of mini figures exclusive to certain sets, which I just had never really thought about before. So I am super interested in that aspect as well and keen to start looking out for those too on bricklink.

Also I will be sure to have fun with it! I already added a few of the extra pieces that I had left to different places on my castle. I just wanted to keep adding to it and had lots of ideas, so I am actually really keen to later start trying out some new creations!

Feeling very excited, and already loving the LEGO community!!!

My girls are not fans of the “lego friends” sets and minifigs.

Posted by RunnerLego · in r/lego · 4 years ago

My girls have really gotten into lego during the pandemic. I have a couple of vintage mindstorms sets that I’ve been doing the simple machines builds with my older one, and my youngest loves building worlds and telling stories with the classic sets.

I have a few regular old school minifigs plus some of the grab bag series, and someone recently got us a “friends” set. The girls have zero interest in the friends minifigs. You can’t have them sit down and connect them in weird ways to the blocks. They also don’t really have any personality.

Plus they are the stereotypical highly gendered “girly girl” toys that my wife and I have been trying hard to keep out of the house. I just don’t understand this line. They have been enjoying the few “city” sets we’ve gotten lot more.

Sorry if this has been beaten to death - but just curious if others out there have similar criticism of this particular line of lego.

Edit - should mention that my girls are ok with the set - just not the minifigs.

I’ve read a couple of articles about the Friends line and the bottom line is they sell very well. I believe their sales doubled expectations the first year and the number of girls playing with LEGO doubled or tripled. They must still be doing well enough if they’re still around almost 10 years later. So I’m guessing most girls like them fine.

RunnerLego · OP · 4 years ago

yeah - there must be a market for them.

Though - my girls like the set they got, just not the minifigs that came with the set. They swapped them out for the regular minifigs pretty quickly.

I’m really curious if they did market testing with both types of minifigs - maybe my girls are different.

I was flown to Billund to interview for Lego right when Friends was being released. They were very excited that it would reach more girls since they had invested a ton of money into research and development. They said they found that girls didn't like the blocky look of minifigures so they developed the minidoll specifically to be less blocky. Lego is incredibly thirsty for the girl market and I can assure you that whatever our opinions on minidolls is, this was a true business decision rather than a creative one.

I don’t have a credible source to point to sadly but my understanding is the line came about because LEGO found girls weren’t as interested in a lot of the sets they were producing. The Friends line does seem to create interest for a number that previously weren’t as engaged.

Sometimes it may not seem like it, e.g. the recent clothing licensing etc. but I do believe LEGO do a lot of internal testing as to what does and doesn’t work. I know a lot of companies might simply slap pink on something and call it a day but I don’t think LEGO work like that thankfully.

Not too long after the Friends line was introduced, there was an interview with one of the designers that stated the decision to go with the minidoll instead of the minifig was based on market research groups. A main negative of the use of minifigs was that it was too much like “Boy Lego”.

My girls liked Lego and they thought the minifigs were ok. I steered away from Friends because I find it too girly and my girls were never into girly stuff. Then I bought them some Elves sets and their minds were blown.

“Dad. See these Elves figures? We need more of these. Lots more.”

“Yeah Dad. These are way cooler than the blocky people. Why can’t they make Guardians of the Galaxy with these kind of figures. That would be so cool Dad why can’t we get Gamora like this Dad the blocky people are not as good.”

I ended up buying through BrickLink every minidoll I could find- all the Superhero Girls, all the Lego Movie 2 minidolls, a bunch of Friends. And pretty much every Elves set- we have an almost complete collection of Elves. They continue to pine that there aren’t enough minidoll themes.

They like Ninjago, and spaceships, and Harry Potter. But they really like the minidolls over the minifigs.

You will find minidoll hate spread to be very common among AFOLS!

My daughter(8) loves the wild colors and animals that come in the Friends line, but prefers to swap the minidolls for minifigs, which we have a plethora of.

She does keep the minidolls for other play, but I think the appeal of them is their lack of appeal to her brothers!

So they are called “mini dolls?”

Yeah - they got frustrated with the minidolls and swapped them out for the minifigs. They do like the little cat that came with the set.

My daughter had a few Lego sets, and then discovered the cartoon. Her interest in Lego exploded. She has since moved beyond Lego Friends, but I will be forever grateful that the company launched the line. We are definitely a pink-isn’t-a-girls-color type family, so I can understand where OP is coming from. Just don’t dismiss how some girls might take to the Lego Friends series and use it to expand upon their love of Lego.

I think it boils down to the fact that it's a little paradoxical - you might want to reduce needless gendering of toys for your kids but at the same time the genering is what really gets kids exposed to lego, from which they can jump into the non-needlessly gendered stuff.

Key Considerations for Choosing LEGO Sets for Girls:

  1. Themes and Interests: Look for sets that align with interests such as animals, architecture, fantasy, or popular franchises (like Disney or Friends). Sets with relatable characters or storylines can be more engaging.

  2. Age Appropriateness: Ensure the set is suitable for the age group. LEGO sets typically have age recommendations that help guide you in selecting the right complexity and size.

  3. Creativity and Building Experience: Choose sets that encourage creativity and allow for open-ended play. Some sets are designed for building specific models, while others offer more flexibility.

  4. Diversity and Representation: Consider sets that feature diverse characters and themes, promoting inclusivity and representation in play.

  5. Reviews and Popularity: Check reviews and ratings to see what other builders have enjoyed. Popular sets often have a strong community and support for ideas and modifications.

Recommended Sets:

  1. LEGO Friends Sets: These sets focus on friendship and community, featuring relatable characters and scenarios. Sets like the LEGO Friends Heartlake City Resort are popular for their engaging themes.

  2. LEGO Disney Princess Sets: Sets like the LEGO Disney Princess Belle’s Castle or LEGO Disney Princess Moana’s Island Adventure are great for fans of Disney, combining storytelling with building.

  3. LEGO DOTS: These sets allow for creative expression through customizable jewelry and room decor, appealing to those who enjoy arts and crafts.

  4. LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Sets: These sets, like the LEGO Creator Pirate Ship, offer multiple building options, encouraging creativity and exploration.

  5. LEGO Architecture Sets: For older builders, sets like the LEGO Architecture Skyline Collection can be both educational and aesthetically pleasing.

Recommendation: The LEGO Friends Heartlake City Resort is highly recommended for its engaging storyline, diverse characters, and the ability to build and play in a vibrant community setting. It encourages creativity and social play, making it a favorite among many.
