TL;DR
Interest-Based Recommendations
When choosing a LEGO set, it's important to consider the interests of the builder. For those interested in cars, the Speed Champions series is highly recommended due to its affordability and impressive designs [1:2],
[3:2]. If you're into fictional themes, sets from Star Wars, Marvel, or Minecraft might be appealing
[4:1]. Additionally, if you enjoy more technical builds, the LEGO Technic series offers complex models that can be very satisfying to complete
[4:1].
Budget Considerations
For beginners on a budget, there are plenty of options under $50. The Creator 3-in-1 sets offer great value and variety, allowing builders to create multiple models from one set [3:1]. For those willing to spend a bit more, sets like the Ford Mustang or Stranger Things Upside Down provide a more involved building experience while still being manageable for newcomers
[4:2].
Starter Set Suggestions
Several specific sets were recommended across discussions. The Creator 3-in-1 Majestic Tiger and Downtown Noodle Shop are popular for their engaging builds and reasonable price points [1:2],
[3:1]. For those interested in pop culture, the LEGO Marvel Iron Man MK4 Bust and Hogwarts Castle were suggested as excellent starting points
[2:1].
Tools and Tips for Building
While no special tools are necessary for building LEGO sets, some users suggest having a miniature flathead screwdriver for separating tightly connected bricks [5:1]. It's also helpful to have small containers for organizing pieces during the build process. For older builders or those with vision difficulties, good lighting and possibly a magnifying glass can enhance the building experience
[5:5].
Exploration and Experimentation
Finally, it's worth noting that part of the fun of LEGO is exploring different themes and styles. Even if you start with a particular interest, don't hesitate to try out different sets as your collection grows. This approach allows you to discover new favorites and keeps the building experience fresh and exciting [5:2].
Speed champion, creator 3 in 1 like the Downtown Noodle Shop or majestic tiger
It will give you a good taste of building brick without breaking the bank.
I should have asked if it's for a young child or an adult
Any set that matches their interests. I would say any set around $50 should be a good starting set for a novice.
Really depends on age (if we’re talking about a child) and interests. Wouldn’t make sense for me to suggest Star Wars if you were really only into cars.
Depending on age/budget/interests
You can look at the lego site and see all categories.
Go to lego.com
In the navigation bar:
Shopping > Sets by theme > See all themes
Have only tried the Lego mini Ninjago's sets (under 500 rupees each) till now. Amazon/Flipkart sales are about to end. Was looking to get something under 10k (or 15k), suggestions under 5k also welcome. I'm mostly interested in minecraft set but it doesnt seem to have any great deals going on. batman sets too, not great deals. was thinking to get a pop culture like home alone, marvel, etc or just a nice standalone like castle, hotel, etc.
What would be a great first proper set?
concorde is the one i recommend to everyone...check out sets in the creator series as well...they will keep you occupied for a long time
Try ford gt it will come for around 7.4K or formula f1 which will come for around 12k
Great car suggestions! Thankyou! Any other suggestions in a sort of place/characters kinda thing?
Jazz club for 13.7k, pac man for 15k, boutique hotel 15k, Star Wars Luke 5.3k there are plenty u can choose which u feel u will enjoy building. I’m into more of car so for me i always choose technic set and will buy boutique hotel next time
Check mediaeval town Square, over 3000 pieces, and last time I checked, it was 12,000 (MRP 24k)
Lego Marvel Iron man MK4 Bust under 6k Lego Hogwarts castle under 12k Lego Avengers Quinjet under 12k There are many actually see what appeals the most to you and get it. Since you have experience with smaller ones would suggest to get something mid size with lesser lego pieces so that the experience is fun.
Heyy thanks for the suggestion! looks like there is not a huge discount on it. just a minor one. so any other suggestion? want to make the most out of my purchase. would love 40-50% off or more
If i were you i would just pick up the star wars millennium falcon.
Recently went to Disney World to a Lego Store and it sparked a collector in me so I ask you all what are some good starter sets I can get. Budget wise I’m looking for anything under $50 but other than that please go crazy for the recommendations.
Also a little fyi I got my first ever Lego set and this is what it is.
You should look into Speed Champions sets if you are into cars. They are cheap and look insanely good
Also great building techniques, and a lot of alternates on rebrickable if not f1
I’m a big fan of the helmet series, specifically Star Wars helmets. They are a little more than $50 but you can usually find sales and deals if you look around.
Under $50 check out the Creator 3-in-1 sets. Usually some fun stuff and good values. In particular check out 31129 Majestic Tiger
Some of them have me wanting to buy 3 to display each build
Game boy is coming out soon. I think it’s just over your budget but looks amazing. I can’t remember price though.
$59.99
OMG just looked it up heck yeah I get that
The gameboy coming out in October looks great and is a solid price!
I just saw that and tbh that will look so cool on my display if anywhere
I'm gonna buy my first lego set soon, but I don't know what's the best set to start with. Have you got any advice ? I'm really new to lego in general.
Whats your budget? What movies/games/media do you like? That will give us a better idea of what we think would be a good starting set.
I think it will be between 150 and 200$
You could get the 10265 Ford Mustang? Displays well and its apparently a fun build. Another cool one would be the 75810 Stranger Things Upside down.
Like with any hobby, start small. There are a lot of sets under $40 USD that you may like. I recommend starting with the $15 shark set that you'll probably see on the shelves the next time you go to Walmart, Target, etc.
I live in france, maybe I'll find it somewhere
UCS Millennium Falcon. Just dive all the way in!
I think thats a bit too much, if you want to get a millenium falcon you should go for the latest model from the rise of skywalker. Ease into it.
I’d recommend a middle-sized set (around 20-40$) as a start, if you have that kind of money to spare.
The set itself depends completely on your interests. If you’re more into cars and normal cities, I’d recommend Lego city, friends or speed champions. If you’re more into fictional action/adventure stuff, then I’d recommend ninjago, sets from the Lego movie 2, Elves or hidden side. And if you’re into the more technical stuff, I’d recommend Lego technic or boost.
And of course there’s the licensed stuff like Overwatch, Star wars, minecraft and DC/Marvel Super Heroes.
But ultimately I’d recommend just going in the store and getting a set that seems the most fun to you.
I want to start into Lego building. I have no prior experience with it. Is there a specific area I should be looking into as a beginner?
Initial cost I would like to keep under $150 to make sure I like it. I don't want something stupid simple but don't want to not finish it either.
Are there tools I need? Any helpful thoughts on thos would be great. I'm older...use Readers to see things close. Should I be getting certain lights? Huge magnifying glass? Etc..
Thoughts and tips appreciated!!!
What others have said. I would also add that it may take a bit of time to figure out what you're really into. I LOVE Star Wars, like, it's my favorite nerddom. But the thing I like is the ships, so I don't collect every SW sets.
And yet! Sometimes a set in a different IP interests me, and I'll grab that because I think it will be a fun build.
However, the it's also about build STYLE. I think the Captain America shield that's almost life sized is so cool looking, but I know I'd hate the repetitive nature of building it, so I won't get it
I’m 48 and when I’m not streaming I use readers and even on stream I use readers for stickers. There’s a lot of resources in this subreddit and the Lego subreddit for sticker applications and such. You’ve set forth on an excellent journey and I wish you many happy builds!
I liked the Yoda starfighter so much I ended up with 2 of each.
Thanks for all the comments! Ordered the set mentioned above and we will see if u have the patience for it lol
You may want to have a miniature flathead screwdriver in case you need to separate two bricks the set will come with an orange LEGO tool but sometimes they don't do a good job at separating two bricks that are snapped together and are exceptionally snug you also may want to get one or two small Tupperware type containers with a Snap-On lid as you're cutting open the bags to work on each section dump the pieces in the container and pull the pieces out of there as you're going through the pages of instructions and if you need to take a break or you want to put it up overnight just put the lid on that way everything is all together organized you don't lose any pieces and when you are ready to start back up again it's open it back up go to the last page of instructions you are at and keep on going hope you suggestions for helpful and I really hope you enjoy the world of Lego building if you get stuck or have a question or the diagram doesn't seem to make sense always drop a post in here this community is very helpful and supportive answering questions about anything involved with the Lego build
Great advice thank you!
I love Lego and I found out my roommate has never built a Lego set before. I want to get her one for Christmas. I have a lot of botanical sets but I feel like it would be best to start her off with a set that is “normal”. Any suggestions in the $20-35 range ?
The Noodle Shop is on sale on amazon right now. It is a great, fun build!
Everyone is awesome. 40516

I love the Creator 3 in 1 sets. There are a lot of inexpensive ones to choose from that are really cute and fun. My personal favorites are Adorable Dogs 31137 and Birdhouse 31143.
We've been doing a couple of Architecture sets before, but would like to have a set/collection/whatever with just different kinds of standard bricks, so we're not locked in to build just the one set. Are there any such premade sets, or would we have to go pick individual pieces?
Not exactly what you're looking for, but made to be taken apart and reassembled: Have a look at the Creator 3-in-1 sets.
Since every set has instructions for three different builds, the parts are chosen for versatility, you might get new ideas what else you can do with a part, and learn more about building techniques. And they can also spark the urge to improve or change the builds or just get creative with the bricks.
I like the lego city mini ones, like the cop car or bus stop
I am in my late 20s and have always loved LEGO. However I was in my teens before I learned that most sets came with instructions on how to build them. I am thing about getting a set to put together. What would you suggest? I want one that is bigger that might take a while.
A good one to start with would be the lego set number 75255, which is the 1700 piece Yoda figure. It costs around $100 and the instructions are easy to follow, and it is very time consuming. Mine took about 6-7 hours to assemble but I rushed through it. If you organize the pieces and take your time, it could be a long but fun building experience. It is a fun set to build and even cooler being displayed
Ideas, Creator Expert, and the Star Wars UCS lines are probably your best bet. There's also the 1989 Batmobile.
Really it's rare that Lego releases a truly terrible set, especially with the larger sets. Your best bet is to go onto Lego's website and see what catches your eye in your budget. I'd hate to recommend something you don't like. Personal favorite of the sets that are on sale now is the James Bond DB5, but if you're not a gearhead or Bond fan you might not enjoy it as much.
I'll just chime in and suggest the creator expert modulars, they're all a fun build and not a bad display piece when all is said and done, but be warned, once you do one you're going to want them all, it's a quick run from one little building to a budding town before you know it!
Maybe a modular building
Can not buy it from LEGO anymore but the Rally Car Technic set (42077) is in my opinion the best starting set for at least Technic.
Hi everyone!
I’m planning to buy my very first LEGO Modular Building and I’d love to hear your recommendations. There are so many great options, and I’m having a hard time deciding where to start.
I’m looking for something that’s fun to build and has lots of detail. I don’t have any specific theme in mind, so I’m open to anything — whether it’s a recent release or an older set that’s worth tracking down.
Which set do you think makes the best “first modular”?
Thanks in advance!
I’m biased to Fire Brigade but that’s my 50+ year love of Fire stations starting with set 570.
Jazz Club will be retiring by the end of the year, and it has been back ordered and full price for basically its entire existence, so there’s probably not a lot of them set aside by resellers, who usually try to get sets during deep sales to reduce their exposure and risk.
So if you ever want that one, get it before the price to get one shoots up to $400+ in January.
Boutique hotel is also retiring by the end of the year but has not had the same stock issues and has been on sale many, many times; in fact I think it’s currently on sale at Target in the US.
Any. Just start!
Did my first one a few months ago with the Boutique hotel. No I can’t wait to purchase the Jazz club before the end of the year
It would have been the assembly Square but that recently retired. It was an homage to the previous 10 years of modulars with a nod to each of them. If you can get this close to retail, I'd try for it.
Of the current selection, the Tudor corner is really great looking and a fun build.
If you think you're going to get addicted like most people do, start with the ones retiring soon, the jazz club or boutique hotel. I like the hotel more but that's just my opinion.
As for the retired ones, the Parisian Restaurant is probably my favorite modular in terms of looks.
Thank you for responding! That is a really good recommendation. I can get the Assembley Square for €300 and I really like it.
I think that the Tudor is the most beautiful one, but I like that hotel too.
The hotel will retire at the end of this year. The Tudor corner has a few more years since it is the newest, if that helps.
I'm just getting back into LEGO now and I'm overwhelmed with the choices. What are the most fun sets in the last few years worth buying?
The Tumbler. It looks almost exactly like in the movie. I love this set.
the $40 version is a steal
What do you like about it? Also, the Batman would not approve of stealing.
Medieval Blacksmith is among my favs
Except for the tree. I've got big sweaty hands and threading those flower studs was HARD
hahaha well, I skipped the tree altogether and replaced it with parts from the bonsai set :)
in fact, I created a little diorama ona 48x48 baseplate with the blascksmith, the tree and hundreds of green flower stalks I got at pick a brick!
I second this. Loved this set.
Saturn V
My first set in 40 years. That was a fun one. A lot of important details, interesting techniques, and quite challenging.
Pirates of Barracuda Bay
Ninjago City Gardens, has unique and innovative builds for every room
Best LEGO sets for beginners
Key Considerations for Beginners:
Age Appropriateness: Choose sets that match the age and skill level of the builder. LEGO sets often have age recommendations that can guide your choice.
Piece Count: Start with sets that have a manageable piece count (around 100-300 pieces) to avoid overwhelming beginners.
Theme Preference: Consider the interests of the builder. Themes like LEGO City, LEGO Creator, and LEGO Friends offer a variety of builds that can appeal to different tastes.
Building Complexity: Look for sets that offer a balance of challenge and enjoyment. Sets with clear instructions and fewer complex techniques are ideal for beginners.
Value for Money: Assess the price relative to the number of pieces and the enjoyment factor. Some sets provide better value than others.
Recommended Sets:
LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Sets: These sets allow builders to create multiple models from one set, providing great value and variety. For example, the LEGO Creator 31088 Deep Sea Creatures is a fun choice.
LEGO City Sets: Sets like the LEGO City 60200 Town Square offer a good mix of buildings and vehicles, making it a great starter set for those interested in city themes.
LEGO Friends Sets: The LEGO Friends 41449 Olivia's Cupcake Café is colorful and engaging, perfect for beginners who enjoy creative play.
LEGO Classic Sets: The LEGO Classic 10698 Large Creative Brick Box provides a wide variety of bricks and colors, allowing for open-ended building and creativity.
LEGO Star Wars Microfighter Sets: For fans of Star Wars, sets like the LEGO Star Wars 75295 Millennium Falcon Microfighter are simple yet iconic, making them great for beginners.
Recommendation: Starting with a LEGO Creator 3-in-1 set is highly recommended for beginners, as it offers multiple building options and encourages creativity while keeping the building experience enjoyable and manageable.
