What Redditors are Saying

Best Energy Efficient Air Coolers

TL;DR

  • Swamp coolers are highly effective in dry climates but less so in humid areas [1:1][1:5].
  • Room coolers with low wattage consumption are recommended for energy efficiency [2:1].

Swamp Coolers

Swamp coolers, also known as evaporative coolers, are highlighted as an energy-efficient option, especially in desert-like conditions. They can be incredibly effective, even to the point of freezing water, due to their reliance on evaporative cooling [1:1]. However, they increase humidity and are less effective in already humid environments, which can make conditions uncomfortable [1:2][1:3]. These coolers require a constant inflow of fresh, dry air to function optimally [1:10].

Room Coolers

Room coolers are another energy-efficient option, particularly suitable for dry summers. Users have reported significant savings on electricity with models consuming as little as 100 watts [2:1]. Models with multiple cooling pads (two sides and one back) are recommended for better cooling performance [2:2]. Brands like Bajaj and Kenstar were mentioned, though Bajaj has been noted for leaking issues [2:2][2:3].

Customization and Local Options

Some users have customized their coolers by adding fan regulators to reduce noise and further decrease electricity consumption [2:4]. In certain regions, locally made coolers with metal construction are preferred over plastic ones due to durability and effectiveness post-May [2:6]. Adding ice cubes to the water used in coolers can enhance the cooling effect significantly [2:9].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

While swamp coolers and room coolers are viable options, it's important to consider the climate in your area before purchasing. For those living in humid regions, traditional air conditioning may still be necessary as a backup [1:5]. Additionally, reversible heat pump units that can both cool and heat air might offer more versatility for year-round use [1:12].

That's just a swamp cooler. They work pretty well, up to a point, but they also increase the humidity in the air, which can make things even less pleasant.

I tried making a swamp cooler in summer last year in the UK. We're naturally very humid up here, and let me tell you, when it got to the mid 30s C, it was absolutely unbearable with one. I barely felt like I could breathe. The warmer/drier air was much more bearable

dzham · 2 years ago

Good point. They need a constant inflow of fresh "dry" air. A cooler at one end of a house and a fan at another, to create a draft, has worked quite well for me.

Swamp coolers are so effective in deserts you can freeze water with them.

Then again, good luck getting that much water available in a desert

"Uses no electricity" - so this evaporative cooler that 'recycles' the water does this with what power? And it depends on wind or convection to move the air over the terracotta cones or is there a fan?

17 upvotes on reddit
dzham · 2 years ago

Evaporative cooling works really well in dryer climates, it even works sort of alright with a bit of humidity. After a certain point though, they do nothing, so you'd still want a "proper" AC as a backup.

"you" might want conventional AC, but when we see this is a planetary issue, ACs create heat! So it's not a real solution in that sense.

1 upvotes on reddit
dzham · 2 years ago

Have you ever been somewhere where it's so humid that you can't regulate your body temperature because it's impossible to sweat? Go tell someone who has experienced that, that they can't use an AC "because the planet".

An evaporate cooler doesn't work in high humidity, same as our sweating, because the air is saturated already.

An AC moves heat, as long as you move it somewhere useful I don't see the problem.

1 upvotes on reddit
S
SilentDis · 2 years ago

Not only that, but the original reason for AC was for it's dehumidifying capabilities. It sucks water out of the air, which - if you move it - feels cooler anyway (your sweat has space to evaporate into).

We've honestly gotten pretty good at cooling and heating air. What would be nicer is if we had more reversible heat pump units. As in, if you buy an AC unit, it should just have a heater capability built-in. Yes, a good number do, but most don't.

Finally, and funny enough, they now make heat pump water heaters. Cool air, and hot water - not a bad deal.

Long term, for heating and cooling needs, better insulation, quality well-sealed heat pumps, and (if you can) geo cooling. Plus - you can fit around 7-12kw/day of solar generation on most homes - even if they're horrifically badly positioned, can take care of ~50% of your home cooling needs at peak times. That's not great, but it's still half of what you need (note, that's if you've set them up wrong!).

There's a place for this, of course. But it's not a panacea for all needs. There's ways - right now - to continue life mostly how you're used to it, but do so in a more earth-friendly way.

Another day, another nifty-in-theory evaporative cooler that means nothing for people who don't live in a freaking desert...

dgaruti · 2 years ago

yeah , 80% of the solutions proposed by the sub are wortless because i live in a cloudy high latitude swamp ...

summer means it's also humid likely ,

and if it's cold it's also humid , because it's a swamp ...

however thanks to man made climate change caused by fossil fuel usage and being careless in draining the swamp , my place will speedrun becoming a desert ...

then these swamps coolers will become useful !

It isn't magic; it's a swamp cooler. I'm sure it's shaped like that so it can be placed in a duct and air blown through it to cool a large structure. It will be more effective in drier climates. In India, maybe not so much.

Bought this cooler 2 years back and this turns out one of my best purchase. I shifted to NCR 2 years back from Bangalore and bought this cooler to beat the Summers Heat and it really working like a charm till date. It helps me save both money and environment. Though I am not against AC but I think using coolers in dry summers in NCR will help dealing with power crisis. We should focus on using AC + Cooler. PS: I am little bit more inclined towards saving nature.

Buy one with 3 cooling pads. (2 sides and 1 in back). Air actually gets cool. Bajaj cools air but has leaking issues. Try Kenstar.

Plastic ones I used very extremely noisy and didn't cool one bit post the month of May..

Yes Metal one obviously best. However this one also is not very noisy, plus it has a feature to adjust the flow of water that helps to maintain humidity level and more I like it to reduce the dripping sound of water during night.

For the full story:

On 3 September 1965, the skies over Pasrur witnessed one of the most remarkable episodes of the Indo-Pak aerial conflict. Squadron Leader Brijpal Singh Sikand of Indian Air Force, while flying a Folland Gnat, came face-to-face with a Pakistan Air Force F-104 Starfighter, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Hakimullah; a young officer who would one day rise to become Chief of the Air Staff. At approximately 1105 hours, the Starfighter engaged with such overwhelming dominance that Sikand, deprived of options, was compelled to surrender in mid-air. In an unprecedented act, he landed his Gnat intact at Pasrur airfield, effectively handing over both himself and his aircraft to Pakistan. Captured as a Prisoner of War, Sqn Ldr Sikand remained in custody until January 1966, when he was released by the Government of Pakistan as a goodwill gesture. Following his return to India, he continued to serve with IAF ultimately attaining the rank of Air Marshal before retiring in October 1986.

The captured Gnat was test-flown by Flight Lieutenant Saad Hatmi, a PAF officer with prior experience on Gnats in the UK, before being moved to Sargodha for detailed evaluation. Preserved thereafter as a prized War Trophy, the aircraft now rests at PAF Museum, Karachi, a powerful symbol of that extraordinary moment and an enduring reminder of the dramatic surrender of 1965.

Cheers to Air's FREEDOM DAY guys. Just one look at Pure...and AIR is smiling 😌. Dedicating this one to AIR (NEKO).

As much as I love LOFT_PURE (nothing would make me happier than LOft_Pure ending up together) but I lowkey adore AIR. Finally dedicating a post to her. Neko is doing such a great job at portraying AIR. Watching her on screen throughout the seris, I mean these 5 episodes has been like watching someone slowly drowning in their own emotions.

The way she has carried her Love for Pure all these years...and the quite suffering... it's a lot to take....

And Episode 5 showed us just the thing she needed, Finally coming up for " air "😅.

I never felt like she was doing anything over the top. Every emotions just felt raw and real.

I want her to be happy.

Arrgggghhhhh Neko is doing so great in this role but I want her to go away! Lol I genuinely feel bad for every character, except Airs mom. She's a C**t!

😃😃😃I'm laughing out loud at "I want her to go away". Also everyone is going through a lot of changes. It's natural to feel bad for all of them.

The ones who have read the novel are probably suffering less comparatively as they already know what's coming next.

I'm also adding Air's mom to my " Bad ladies" List. If I say too much here... Someone is going to attack me 😃 so I'm choosing my words wisely now ☺

Yayy! My girl Air mentioned 🎉🎉 She deserves the world and I'll fight for her to get it. If she's a red flag I'm colorblind...

Nah, seriously, I really love Air's character. It gives the series so much depth and complexity and it is sooo well written. It's breaking my heart seeing her realizing it is too late for her and Pure now, just when she got her freedom back... I love Loft, she sweet and sexy and everything, but I hope so hard Air can find someone too 😭😭

Well your girl AIR is quite the lady.... What can I say... 😃😃 To be honest, sometimes, I also find her a tiny bit red flag but you and everyone else who is on her side have my full support... She's amazing 🙌🙌🙌🙌

Also I'm very confused if I like Air more Or NEKO as an actress. Because NEKO is doing amazing.

Yeah agreed.... She took a long time for getting the divorce but you never know... Maybe it's not too late... Only time will tell. Pure has always been waiting for her. Don't lose heart just yet.

I mean I lowkey wouldn't mind them being a throuple but that's because I don't want to see Loft ending up alone.. even if Loft Pure end up together... I will feel very sad for Air... But I'm team Loft_Pure from the start.

So good luck to us.. I guess... 😭

I have an 8.1kw system on a 1400sqft brick home in AZ, and the house has both a swamp cooler and AC. What’s the most efficient way to utilize this setup to keep the house cool in this 110+ weather.

Posted by Sickranchez87 · in r/solar · 4 years ago

I’m trying to figure out how best to run these coolers during the day to keep the house around 76-78 degrees. Right now, if I just run the swamp cooler(it’s an almost brand new mastercool) during the day while we’re at work the house get up to 86, and when I turn the AC on when I get home it takes like 4 hrs just to get down to 80. The nice is when I run the swamp cooler all night while we sleep it gets down to about 72-74, so I’m wondering if I should switch to AC when we go to work at 8am, or let the swamp cooler run until about Noon and then switch the system over to AC. I just want to make sure I’m utilizing the system to power everything in the most efficient way possible. Any insight is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I lived in Arizona for 15 years, and had a house with AC & swamp cooler. I remember every year around July 4th, I would shut down the swamp cooler. Clean and empty the roof unit, and plug all the swamp airways. I had 12 X 12" vents in the ceiling of every room. inside the vent was a very light aluminum flap that would easily push open when the swamp cooler was running. All those got a piece of foam insulation to block them.

I think you're putting too much humidity inside with the swamp cooler. The AC is struggling to dehumidify the inside air. Sometime around October I would restart the swamp cooler.

Also, a programmable thermostat that would kick on the AC an hour or so before I got home. If you don't have one, definitely worth the investment.

This. Use the ac during humid months June, July, aug. going back and forth doesn’t make sense to me. Yes more expensive to run ac but seems like a waste switching between the two when the ac takes so much to remove the humidity each time it runs. IMO

I have a whole house swamp cooler. We use it up to 100-102f. Warmer than that and it just can't keep the house cool enough so we switch to ac. Once we start using ac I don't switch back to the cooler until the Temps drop. I don't find it to be worth the effort to switch back and forth constantly and I'd rather not yoyo the humidity up and down.

Swamp cooler uses far less electricity. Like 1/20th.

So you want to use it as much as you can stand, then switch to AC when the humidity gets too high or the temp gets too high.

Whatever results in the lowest possible AC run hours while keeping you comfortable is going to be the most efficient.

Typically running the swamp cooler is going to flush out all your dry air and replace it with humid air though. Do you have roof vents to the outside in all your rooms? A lot of ac efficiency is going out those, but they are necessary for a swamp cooler to work.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to do currently, but when it’s 110+ outside, the swamp cooler can’t keep it below 86, which is too hot for my taste. I just ordered a smart t-stat so I’m gonna start switching over to AC a few hrs before we get home so we aren’t running it more than necessary. Thanks for all the info!

Not being a dick, but why not both? SC brings it to manageable temp and a/c brings it from there, down.

I always thought it was better to keep your temperature at one constant value. If you set it from 86 to 80 for example, not only does the system have to cool the air but also the surfaces of the home. That is why it takes so long to drop those 6 degrees.

If it were me, I would just keep the setting to what you want it to be 24/7. In the AM your home is cool and below your temp setting. I think your A/C is going to have a much easier time keeping a cool home cool then trying to get a hot home cool.

Ok cool that was basically the answer I was looking for, and that’s what I’ll start doing. I figure if I can run the swamp cooler all night since it uses much less electricity and then run the ac during the day when we’re getting the most out of the solar panels. Thanks!

Maybe get your A/C looked at to make sure it is up to snuff?

Depending on what side of the fence you are on, you can try GENTLY spraying off any dirt on the cooling fins of the A/C unit if it is really dirty. Of course the A/C unit would need to be OFF prior to doing this. This is assuming you have access to it.

It takes energy to condense the water out of the air. That's why it takes the AC 4 hours to get from 86 to 80. You are pumping the air full of water when you are running the swamp cooler, and the AC unit has to work cool down that humid air.

Better to give the swamp cooler a break during the hottest part of the year. Rely on your AC.
Go ahead with the programmable thermostat. You will find the house will cool down much faster when the air is dry. Go back to the swamp cooler in the fall when temps don't get so high.

What is the most energy efficient heat pump / AC unit?

Posted by enkrypt3d · in r/solar · 3 years ago

I currently have 2x 2 ton Trane XR14 gas furnace / AC units which pulls about 3200 watts each when the AC is running and trying to see if a new heat pump / AC unit would use less energy? Or would it even be worth it? Now my 3x encharge 10 batteries barely keep up if I am running the AC at night.... the 34 x LG 380W panels supply enough power through the day for the most part, but wondering if I should upgrade these to a seer 20+ unit? or spend my $ elsewhere? I was looking at the Rheem RP20 which is a seer 20 unit.... the amperage appears to be about the same though.

If you're only really concerned about a small area, I currently have 2x 9k Bryant Evolution ductless heat-pumps that heat and cool my entire house. I went with the 1-1 units because they are 42 SEER/ 15.0 HSPF. They are amazing and I have accidently pissed off my wife more than once by setting it to the wrong mode during the summer and us coming home to a house that is 55 degrees.....

I'm not entirely sure how much power overall the units are pulling but damn do they work well.

Our Bosch IDS 2.0 heat pump & air handler combo is 20.5 SEER /10.5 HSPF. There may be more efficient ones but that seemed pretty efficient to me.

Do you have the power usage when the ac is running?

1 upvotes on reddit
bluechrism · 3 years ago

No, and it's been below average temps in Minnesota this year so far so haven't used it as an AC this year. The Max power draw is 6kw (or 26.3amps at 230v), but I've not been able to measure it running (wish I had the enphase consumption monitor with our solar). That 6kw is probably only drawn during heating.

I do know our summer electricity usage dropped noticably after replacing our previous 12SEER Trane AC with this.

How much for an install of that unit? I got a quote for $20k pre any tax credit.

We paid around $14.5k in summer 2020 and included the ac, air handler in the basement, 15kw 2stage resistive backup heater, new dehumidifier control, and probably some other bits in forgetting - every home is different.

I have 4 ton Geothermal system (Climatemaster Tranquaility 27). Nothing quite as cool as the Trilogy 45. My unit is 10 years old. In stage 1 cooling which is about 3tons, it uses 2200 watts of power. When in stage 2 cooling, which is the full 4 tons of cooling it uses 3200 watts. My system is setup for zoning, each floor is its own zone. Geothermal is good because the outside unit is the constant temperature of the earth. The other nice thing is that in the summer, it helps give us free hot water (desuperheater).

That's really interesting. How much did it cost to install?

C
CollabSensei · 3 years ago

Back in 2012 when we built the house it was about 25k for the inside unit and the ground loop (which is just basically several hundred feet of plastic tubing buried about 4-8ft in the yard. Back then, geo was eligible for a 30% discount. Once you subtracted that, the cost was about the same cost as an air source heat pump.

The Rheem RP20 could potentially save you some energy in the long run, especially considering your current system's energy consumption. I know it did with mine.

I found a helpful comparison website when I was figuring out my home's energy needs. It laid out the differences between various units and their efficiency. Might be worth checking out

best energy efficient air coolers

Key Considerations for Energy Efficient Air Coolers:

  1. Energy Rating: Look for air coolers with high energy efficiency ratings (like Energy Star certified) to ensure lower electricity consumption.

  2. Cooling Capacity: Choose a cooler with an appropriate cooling capacity (measured in CFM - cubic feet per minute) for your room size. A general rule is about 20 CFM for every square foot of living space.

  3. Water Consumption: Consider models that use less water while providing effective cooling. Some coolers have larger water tanks which can reduce the frequency of refills.

  4. Fan Speed Settings: Multiple fan speed settings allow you to adjust the cooling based on your comfort level and can help save energy.

  5. Portability: If you need to move the cooler between rooms, look for lightweight models with wheels for easy transport.

  6. Noise Level: Check the decibel rating to ensure the cooler operates quietly, especially if you plan to use it in a bedroom or office.

Recommendations:

  • Honeywell CO60PM: This evaporative cooler is energy efficient, has a large water tank, and is suitable for medium to large spaces. It offers good airflow and is portable.

  • Luma Comfort EC110S: A compact and efficient option for smaller spaces, this model has a sleek design, multiple fan speeds, and a low water consumption rate.

  • Evapolar EVA Chill: Ideal for personal cooling, this small unit is highly energy-efficient and uses minimal water, making it perfect for desk use or small rooms.

Choosing the right air cooler depends on your specific needs, such as room size and portability, but these options are well-regarded for their efficiency and performance.
