Episode 189 and Episode 65
Episode 189 is widely praised for its direction and animation quality, with many fans considering it the best-directed episode in the entire Boruto series [3:2]. The sakuga (dynamic animation) and Ikemoto art style are highlighted as peak features of this episode
[3:3]. Similarly, Episode 65 is also highly regarded for its direction, making it a close contender to Episode 189
[3:3],
[3:6].
Emotional Moments
Several episodes are noted for their emotional impact. One such moment is when Boruto realizes what Naruto went through when passing on his Rasengan in Episode 65 [5:2]. Another poignant scene is Naruto holding Boruto's dead body, which was more impactful in the anime compared to the manga due to additional flashbacks
[5:3],
[5:6]. Kurama's death is another significant emotional moment, although opinions vary on its execution between the manga and anime
[5:4],
[5:8].
Anime Canon and Manga Adaptations
The guide from Discussion 1 provides insights into which episodes are adapted from the manga and which are anime-original [1]. This can help viewers decide which episodes to watch based on their interest in manga adaptations versus original content. For those who find some arcs slow-paced, reading episode summaries on the Naruto/Boruto fandom wiki is recommended to avoid confusion later on
[1:1].
Character Development and Plot Points
Episodes that explore character development and plot points can be crucial for understanding the overarching narrative. While some viewers criticize the power scaling and writing inconsistencies in Boruto, there are episodes that delve into the dynamics between characters like Naruto and Boruto, adding depth to their relationship [2:6],
[4:1].
In summary, while Boruto has its critics, certain episodes stand out for their direction, emotional depth, and contribution to the story. Episodes 189 and 65 are particularly noteworthy for their quality and impact.
This is a fairly extensive guide to the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime which aims to answer questions people frequently have about what episodes are worth watching, what episodes are adapted from the manga, which are anime original, and so forth. Rather than answer these questions myself, I'm attempting to provide some basic information on each arc and noteworthy episodes so that people can decide for themselves based on what content interests them.
I originally started this guide about two years ago for r/Naruto, and after receiving a few requests to update it, finally sat down this evening to finish writing up everything that was missing. I've decided to post my updated version here, as this is where the majority of discussion on the series has drifted over the last couple years.
These are episodes or arcs adapted from canon manga chapters, the feature film, or official light novels, all of which were either written, illustrated, or supervised by Kishimoto himself. Pretty much essential viewing.
These are the main original story arcs created specifically for the anime, supervised by Ukyo Kodachi (writer for the Boruto film and manga series through chapter #52). They're considered canon, give additional character development and introduce new characters, and occasionally foreshadow future plot elements, but aren't necessarily essential viewing. The first three anime original arcs were adapted into a light novel series.
These are individual episodes or short mini-arcs between the main story arcs, and if the subjects interest you, you may wish to watch them on a case-by-case basis. I'm not going to spend much time on this, as they're essentially filler.
These are episodes that feature particularly notable story elements or tie into the overarching plot of the series. You can think of this as a sort of cliff's notes for the anime original episodes if you don't want to watch the full arcs but want to see the highlights.
Just the episodes that feature sakuga -- the highest quality animation. This list isn't exhaustive, and there are occasionally short sakuga cuts in random episodes that I may have forgotten about. Check out sakugabooru's Boruto category for a more extensive archive of cuts.
Also a general advice : If you find some anime canon arcs/episodes too slow paced and feel like dropping them it's better to read their episode summaries on naruto/boruto fandom wiki so you can at least get an idea about what went down during those episodes instead of just skipping them altogether and then later being confused when things/characters l/plot points introduced during those skipped episodes are brought back in later on
Well said, best advice here. Some arcs or episodes are just way to brutal to even get through. I recommend this advice to anyone i introduce the series too.
I believe 171 had some bits of sakuga as well with sarada vs sakura
True
This mustve taken a while to make so this post deserves at least 1000 upvotes
Brother how much time did you devote in this post? honestly its very interesting
if i would have had reddit coins i would have given you a diamond award
Excellent post, i'll link this to the FAQ. Thanks for all that effort.
It's honestly annoying. Despite everything the previous generation did to work hard and achieve their powers, they just get outclassed by literal kids. And before anyone mentions kids surpassing adults in Naruto, this is completely different. Naruto and Sasuke were the only ones to surpass the previous gen, meanwhile we have preteens that are god level in Boruto. Daemon, Himawari, Boruto, Kawaki, etc and it's fucking ridiculous
Shitty powerscaling and inconsistent writing is what boruto all about
They don't deserved their power
The downfall already began with Kaguya and Boruto just made it worse. But to be honest I think the idea of a 15 year timeskip sequel is just bad. It made a potential follow up set during the blank period far less interesting.
Deadass. I say it every time I get the chance ; chakra didn’t fucking need an “explanation” like that. It’s literally just chi, your internal energy manifested. That was enough of an explanation, absolutely no need for anything further.
Boruto is fucking trash
Since the Pain arc really
You might be the only sensible person in this thread. Everyone is fuming thinking that this statement means Hima is already stronger than Naruto when that's not what Kurama is saying. The hate boner this sub has for Boruto is insane
>Naruto worked his life for that
Naruto didn't do anything to receive Kurama either so where is the problem?
All training Naruto did was also training that helped with Kurama's chakra
His own mental development is also something that influenced Kurama
The affinity thing was established in Shippuden during the war Chapter 617 https://i.imgur.com/Db17IiX.png . Kurama said the reason his affinity with Naruto is strong is because their chakra has been resonating together since Naruto was a baby, and that it helps that Naruto is the offspring of his previous jinchuuriki. It started with him spending some time resonating with Kushina's chakra before moving on to her offspring, so it's like the process of affinity got a head start before he was passed on to her offspring. Himawari is the next offspring down the line and the affinity is even stronger yet.
TLDR: Three generations of jinchuuriki from the same family line makes for stronger and stronger affinity, since the next jinchuuriki is the offspring of the previous one, the growing resonance doesn't have to start over, it can continue. Himawari is the strongest yet since she is the latest one.
EDIT: corrected chapter number
That along with a Kurama that's perfectly agreeable/equal with Naruto, and not forcibly subdued like in previous Jinchuriki.
Boruto in a nutshell lmao even we the fans don't know what the fuck is going on but we here for it
Its literally the best looking episode in the entire Boruto anime bro
And best directed. Direction matters just as much animation
65 is better directed but this ep looks the best
That sudden short lasting moment Naruto had that arc with Kabuto and Hidan, boruto got that too?
I think episode 65 is the best directed, but this one is a close 2nd. The sakuga and Ikemoto artstyle are absolute peak.
Wish all of part 2 was animated like this and it would instantly be number 1 anime
No lies detected. Bring that team back together. Lock them in a studio for a year and make every TBV episode just like that.
seeing as its the sequel to an original featuring no parents, this makes boruto sound way better than it is
I really dislike the writers. They DID not cook.
Even if you want to make Naruto a bad parent the correct option is to do the opposite rather than having him be neglectful which doesn't go in line with his character have him be an omnipresent parent. Have Naruto turn the entire village into a surveillance state only for his children. To everyone else seems fine but to them, to sensory specialists like team Kurenai, and to the Hyuuga there are Narutos ALL OVER THE VILLAGE with one purpose: keep his kids safe.
Yah this dude can use shadow clones better than anyone. There are so many ways to write him with out character assinasion. Man it makes me mad thinking about the good story we could of had.
I can't believe Sakura is the only responsible one of the three.
Don't believe it. Sakura is also among the bad parents considering that Sarada doubted whether Sakura was really her biological mother...
The best parent is Orochimaru))
How do you even get outdone by Ninja Mengele in parenting ? Especially when Sarada only started to doubt when her mom couldn't even be bothered to give a clear answer on such an easy question, true or false, as Sasuke never wore glasses a kid and 99% of her character is crushing on him.
Her being the most responsible is even more questionable when she busted her own house in an outburst for raising Sarada's doubts in the 1st place while still having to pay the lease (or mortgage ?) on it.
Choke choke die 😂😭💀
Boruto: "Dad, you are the worst, you never show up to birthdays" Naruto: "Me, the worst? Sasuke tried to kill Sakura all the time". Sasuke: "I haven't tried to kill Sakura in like 15 years!" Naruto: "When did you last see her?" Sasuke "About 15 years ago"
Boruto realizing what Naruto went through when Naruto passed on his rasengan to boruto in ep65/the movie.
I get what others are saying in terms of kurama and boruto's death, but the passing of power from father to son just hits differently. It just shows the weight of the series we all watched growing up.
Imo when Naruto was holding Boruto’s dead body
Boruto's death in the anime. We had the baby Boruto flashbacks in the anime while it was so bland in the manga.
Unironcially both Boruto's death and Kuramas were bad in the manga compared to anime
The english dub ruined kurama's death lol, naruto's english VA literally just phoned it in for a fucking paycheck "Kuramaa.....anyways".
A rare Moment when I prefer the Anime version over the Manga .
In manga during their "last" moments, Naruto mentioned Kurama killed his parents. Meanwhile in anime, that was replaced by how he wasn't able to say goodbye to Hinata and Himawari. That's a direct upgrade anime over manga and it shows that anime staffs love Naruto more than Kishimoto himself.
Edit: my bad for my original comment, I somehow thought u were talking about Boruto.
But yeah I agree, Kurama should've stayed dead, at least until the end of the series. Hima is cool with him, but it takes away from the impact of his death.
They established in naruto that they reform of they are destroyed so you knew it wouldn't be
Yes. But the way they treated this 'death' made you think he wasn't coming back.
Wait what he comes back?? Bro until this very moment I thought he‘s dead and he’s gonna stay that way
When boruto wouldn’t sleep until naruto promised him to fix the momoshiki situation and boruto says you never break a promise it’s your ninja way a passes out 🥹
Sasuke & Naruto vs Momoshiki: Guess I'll leave ¯_(ツ)_/¯
208 actually wasn’t good save for the initial borushiki part which ended very quickly. 175 and 192 should be where 208 and 216 are. The sakuga cuts in those two are much better. 65 should be in a tier of its own like at the very top.
What was episode 192? 175 was the Deepa fight one, right?
Yeah, and 192 was the Kawaki flashback one.
Ep 65?
don’t forget 65 and 175 👀👀
65, 175, 192
Exhausted Naruto trying to get a Kuramaa doll for Himawari was the best
Family hijinks to develop the characters beat out any action fillers, they should stick to those
those are my favorite episodes as it shows us the peace that naruto and everyone fought for
Yes
They serve the purpose of showing how Naruto brought peace. They're fine as long as the main cast is involved in some way.
100%
Honestly, on average they are better than most of the “actual” content episodes.
The manga’s two biggest problems are the pacing and fact that if you aren’t named Boruto or Kawaki you might as well not exist.
These episodes address that by actually spending time to flesh out not only the main cast, but the supporting cast as well.
Naruto didn’t need to worry about this because the manga was weekly, so the “downtime” was naturally paced within the story. Since Boruto is monthly, there is pressure for it to be more strictly paced, which means these moments get cut for pure plot which leads to the two above problems.
When the show does inevitably return, hopefully under a seasonal model, I hope that Studio Pierrot understand that rather than jamming as much “plot” into a 12 episode run, it would be better to settle for 9-10 episodes of plot and some downtime low stakes filler. They are gonna have to figure out how to pace the story to fit within these more constricted timeframe.
All that said, given how much of a tonal shift TBV is from NNG (especially the early school days), I don’t know if Pierrot is capable of making the kind of SoL content that would work in that context.
Named all the things wrong with Naruto at least the pasting the the “Naruto and sasuke show” 💀
hopefully under a seasonal model, I hope that Studio Pierrot understand that rather than jamming as much “plot” into a 12 episode run
Seasonal means no fillers, usually. At best a bit of padding to neatly close whatever story-arc they do each season in 13 episodes.
Will miss them , that’s for sure!
This footage be one of the most underrated scenes yet. Boruto really put the whole team 7 on his back. I really like the way they did his character. He’s clever, smart and just tuffff😂
loved these moments, showed versatility and good Battle IQ. Everytime a ninja does a shadow clone to change trajectory or launch themselves I get so hype
what was the ability boruto used to block the attack?
It was ninja tool
is this a clear example of a lightspeed feat dodging the lasers?
The blasts are made of chakra, not light/lasers.
what if i told you all abilities are made with chakra.
tho after you said this i did some investigating and the doctor says its the same chakra bullets from the androids/minigun but idk how well that holds up because each of the three are different variations which usually look like flamethrowers. but who knows
This fight was really dope. Boruto was on another level for this. Think I was smiling the whole time. His water style was fuckin cracked
I was cheesing the whole time the water justu was massive
Two Blue Vortex needs the Shadow Clones back.
I seriously can’t wait for Naruto to come back with a power-up and be there for Boruto again. I’ve loved every moment they’ve had together. I feel bad for Boruto having to go through all this alone. Naruto’s the only one who could truly understand what his son is dealing with, especially with everything he went through himself.
Really hoping we get to see them fight side by side and bring peace back to Konoha — with the whole squad behind them, of course.
What’s your favorite Naruto & Boruto father-son moment?
>I seriously can’t wait for Naruto to come back with a power-up and be there for Boruto again.
I have lost all hope. Naruto is now just a burden to others unfortunately
If you’re saying that because Naruto was nerfed, I get it, but I don’t think that means he’s a lost cause or just a burden now. With the way Boruto and Sarada have gotten insane power-ups recently, there’s definitely still a chance for Naruto (and Sasuke too) to make a strong comeback. The story could easily give them new abilities or a moment to shine again, they’re still legends in the ninja world.
I've lost all hope of seeing Naruto relevant in terms of strength now. Ikemoto has him slaughtered on all sides.
Naruto's reaction is something embarrassing, I can't believe anyone thought of that.
How is it embarrassing?💀
Does it seem normal to you that Naruto Uzumaki, one of the most emotional manga characters ever, reacts to the lifeless body of his son in his arms like someone who has just seen his house cat die in front of him?
"I can't wait for Naruto to come back with a power-up"
It ain't happening.
my theory is that naruto might be storing up a bunch of sage mode chakra while in the stasis hes in currently. not having kurama anymore is def gonna be a hit to his power level but if he could have years worth of nature chakra stored up, hed be pretty powerful
Episode 220 is my favorite Naruto/Boruto moment.
Naruto, Sasuke and Momo
Naruto, Sasuke and Jigen
Naruto and Isshiki
Naruto, Kurama and Kawaki
Naruto, Kurama and Isshiki, with some Boruto and Sasuke
Kawaki
Team 7
Naruto, Sasuke, OG Cast, Momoshiki
Isshiki and Koji
Momoshiki
So in 10 best rated episodes, the 'MC' was relevant in like 2 of them, and you wonder why people don't like Boruto as a MC
Having watched all of Boruto anime and read all of the manga, I can confidently say that this was by design -- Boruto is very unlikeable in part 1.
It's become clear that in Two Blue Vortex, boruto goes through a transformation -- I believe Kishi has done this on purpose. In this regard, I think part II of the anime series will have the MC in many (if not all) of the top rated episodes in it.
People forget naruto in the first show takes a while to grow on you too, he wasn’t my favorite character till shippuden
Momoshiki fight was ungodly good
I like Boruto. But I often say we could have stopped there because of how good it was. But then we wouldn't have gotten Baryon.
Tbh I feel a bit sad that the most loved Boruto episodes are the ones that focus on Naruto and Sasuke the most. I wonder how well TBV will do now that they're both out of the picture.
No reason, the most loved Naruto episodes focus on characters like Jiraiya, Kakashi, Obito and Rock Lee as well. It's simply the nature of the series, part 1 focuses heavily on Naruto and Sasuke.
I think that fight when it’s team 7 vs boro was pretty good
I mean, it's really hard for kid Boruto to compete with the swangsong battle episodes of 2 iconic characters with decades of build up.
well these are the best episodes
You just know the ones with boruto are going to be beloved
Two blue vortex is already so loved
To be frank, Boruto didn't have epic moments in part 1. The characters that shined the most are Naruto/Sasuke/Momo/Isshiki/Kawaki/kinda Kashin Koji. Boruto's epic moments will be in part 2.
