What Redditors are Saying

Is Boruto Worth Watching?

TL;DR Boruto has mixed reviews. Some find it enjoyable with good moments, while others criticize its departure from Naruto's legacy. It's worth watching if you're curious about the next generation but don't expect it to match Naruto's level.

Mixed Reception

The reception of Boruto is notably mixed among fans. Some viewers appreciate the continuation of the Naruto universe and enjoy seeing the new generation of characters [1:4], [5:2]. Others feel that Boruto does not live up to the standards set by Naruto and Shippuden, citing issues with character depth and storytelling [3:2], [5:1]. The series is often described as average or mediocre [5:1].

Early Episodes and Pacing

Several comments mention that Boruto starts off slowly, with the first arc being particularly criticized [1:1], [1:7]. However, some viewers note that the show improves after the initial episodes, suggesting patience may be rewarded [1:2], [5:4]. The pacing differs from Naruto, which may affect how fans perceive the series [5:2].

Character Development and Legacy

A significant point of contention is how Boruto handles legacy characters from Naruto. Some fans feel that the series fails to respect these characters, focusing instead on new ones [1:6], [2:7]. Conversely, others argue that Boruto offers valuable additions to the franchise, such as Mitsuki and Sarada [1:4].

Viewing Recommendations

For those interested in watching Boruto, some fans recommend skipping certain episodes to focus on the more engaging parts [5:4]. This approach can help avoid filler content and concentrate on key story arcs. Additionally, the manga is suggested as an alternative for those who prefer reading [4:3].

Ultimately, whether Boruto is worth watching depends on individual preferences and expectations. If you're a fan of the Naruto universe and curious about the next generation, it might be worth giving Boruto a try, keeping in mind the varied opinions surrounding the series.

ORIGINAL POST

Just Finished Shippuden this week (so freaking good, by the way), and now im thinking if its worthy invest some time watching Boruto.

All i know about it is that its very divisive among fans; i ve read praises about the animation and the fights involving the OG characters, and by the other hand, ive also read bad reviews, saying that it is very disrepectfull and contradictory to Kishimoto work.

So i wanna know what do you think? Which are the pros and cons about Boruto? And why should or shouldnt watch it?

Sorry for my not so perfect english!

I don't like the first two arcs, but it's pretty consistently great after that. It's not any sort of masterpiece, but it does add things of actual value to story, and it's not a cheap, one off cash grab like some people like to say it is.

People bitch because it didn’t live up to the stories they wrote in their heads, just like with every other sequel. It’s a perfectly fun show even if it is aimed at a younger audience.

Also “disrespectful and contradictory to Kishimoto’s work” lol my dude was involved in it from the beginning. That kind of shit is why I say don’t bother with what we think and just watch it for yourself. Mitsuki and Sarada are amazing additions to the franchise.

Such a cliche answer by those who have never accomplished anything meaningful, and so fail to understand how other intelligent and successful people can actually have standards. It's an observable truth that this show takes terrible liberties with the classic characters. Similar to how the latest Star Wars films trashed the legacy of the likes of Luke, Leia, and Han.

Just because you are easily entertained by low standards of writing and inconsistent usage of characters, doesn't mean that others are merely "bitching." It's more truthful to say that people like you are simply more prone to "swallowing" whatever is fed to them.

It's a perfectly acceptable mid-tier sequel anime, and would be otherwise unremarkable if it was not a sequel to one of the most beloved anime franchises ever. It isn't written by the original author, and a lot of people object to the liberties the new author takes with the original authors work. A lot of people also claim it fails to treat main characters from the previous series with enough respect, in favor of showcasing its own original characters, although how much is "enough" is ill-defined.

This is why I laugh whenever this and Yashahime get accused of being soulless cash grabs that pay no respect to the author’s original works.

Yes I’m sure Kishimoto and Takahashi were very insulted and demeaned and simply designed the major characters and approved plots ahead because they’re destitute after Naruto and Inuyasha ended.

Boruto is fine. The people who say it's horrible are being ridic subjective.

Boruto isn't Naruto 3. It's not about Naruto and his friends anymore, all of which are side-characters now. Which disappoints people who just want more of Naruto (and Sasuke and the gang).

Boruto also isn't Naruto Rebooted. It doesn't fix all the things wrong with late Naruto Shippuden, it doesn't throw overboard all the thematic developments over the course of the Naruto series. Which disappoints people who really just want to be watching Attack on Titan but set in the Naruto universe.

Over on r/naruto there's people doing survey's and keeping track of every episode: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1m8kxNBrGqGIXrx4JVjuKbFfhKN45sLxyQQx6EjVoyQg/edit#gid=0

As you can see in those graphs, it's just fine. There's a plenty of episodes fans really love, there's also plenty of episodes people think are mediocre to terrible. For a series already 80+ episodes in that's just fine. And don't be fooled, there are plenty of fans still watching Boruto, just because it's not the phenomenon Naruto was doesn't mean it's not popular.

What Boruto is, is Boruto. It's a sequel to Naruto which changes up some things, while keeping others the same. If that sounds like what you want after finishing Shippuden, you should ignore the haters and go watch it. If you feel that after 700+ episodes of Naruto you just want more of the same, or alternatively you just want something completely different, you're probably going to be disappointed. But if you watched all that you probably owe it to yourself to make your own judgment on Boruto. (Though, imo, if you give up on it you'll miss out on some great moments and really worthwhile stuff.)

I honestly got burned out by the end of Naruto + Shippuden and felt drained so I didn’t want to watch a “Naruto 3”. Now after a while I’ve been looking for reviews. If it’s in essence a fresh story with all the ninja quirks loved then I think it’s worth a shot now. Admittedly, I was sour about some of the kid pairings but I like that “Naruto” itself is over, though that seems to be what people hate about it. But sometimes I did wish it could just start over, the plot and fillers was a lot to watch. :) Thanks for review and the spread. I may just enjoy it yet.

Np, thanks for letting me know it was helpful to you! That's why I wrote it!

You might still not like it, you won't find me saying it's the best anime series out right now or anything like that. But most of the hate going around has very little to do with the actual quality of the show and everything with it not trying to be what many people want it to be. And, imo, it deserves a fairer shot than that!

Personally, I don't love every single episode, but I'm having fun watching it. The pace is slower than early Naruto, but for me this is a feature, not a bug. Because I like that it spends a lot of time to just show us the next gen characters living in the world, without some big world-ending threat hanging over everything.

Whether you think a show is bad or good is always going to be subjective.

Can people please stop misusing objective/subjective when talking about enjoyment of something? It's completely subjective.

I stopped watching it because of the fillers. The manga is pretty nice even though by now it is pretty slow and short. I have some problems with the anime, like how all the efforts of the Naruto generation are just being surpassed by kids with no effort at all, it's basically a bad joke.

Here's my response to someone else who asked recently:

I think Boruto is actually really enjoyable. There are a lot of similar themes without it being a total rehash of the OG series. The pacing is quite different, so keep that in mind. It's just best to remember that Boruto is the main character, so you need to watch through his perspective and imagine it as it's own standalone series. Definitely watch it! :)

It’s getting better but is nowhere near Naruto’s level.

Edgelord09 · 7 years ago

Average to good. I definitely think it's good for the majority part.

I think it's worth the watch just to see the old gen characters but even without it, it's building upto something good.

My recommendations, watch ep1-15, 17-24, 32-37, 38-39 then skip to ep50, keep watching from there. You can still watch them all but imo these are the only episodes worth watching.

I personally find Boruto to be quite average. There are good moments here and there, for example in the arc that just ended, but I'd say it's pretty medicore for the most part. If you have some free time and wonder what old gen's kids might be up to, then I'd say go for it. Neither the anime nor the manga are anything spectacular to me, however I often enjoy new episodes so who knows - perhaps you will as well.

yes when you skip anime canon arcs it is great adaptation and also the only essential anime canon saga I recommend is academy saga which is a prequel to versus momoshiki arc a first manga arc of boruto but this anime canon saga adds a lot to the story and especially characterization of new gen members that is done better than the manga introduction, and then after this you can skip anime canon arcs since they are meh or below meh and add nothing to the story, and when you skip them is basically watching like seasonal anime with in total of 60 manga canon episodes.

Yeah, though I’d recommend reading it. I original watched like 5 episodes back in 2020, then dropped it cuz i thought it was boring and Boruto was really annoying. The manga is pretty quick paced, Boruto is really only annoying for the first 5ish chapters and that’s it.

But if you’re gonna decide to watch the anime, just watch manga canon & some anime canon episodes

Just finished the Naruto series and debating whether to start Boruto. Keep seeing people say it's either terrible or "gets good eventually."

For those who watched both - does it live up to Naruto at all? Or should I just leave it at the perfect ending and move on to something else?

No spoilers please, just want to know if it's worth the time investment!

So op I’m going to say this in a non malicious and non jaded way - as unbiased as I can.

  • The series starts off slow - especially if you’re someone who started from Naruto. If someone was totally new to the franchise, it could be more interesting. Given you have background - you’re going to find a lot lackluster. You don’t even get past the movie until much later in the series.

  • It’s hard to like Boruto as a character when you start as a Naruto fan because he’s Naruto polar opposite - from the boy who had nothing to the boy who has everything (except a dad whose available).

  • Again - totally new to the universe? People will understand Boruto better. Naruto vet? You’ll think he’s a brat because he doesn’t get the attention he wants from his dad (again - Naruto had it much worse).

  • The story is less interesting because we have these top tier characters that can defeat any opponent. Plus - a lot of what Boruto and his team learn just doesn’t hold the weight that Naruto’s story did.

  • Finally, the most important piece - if you try Boruto and enjoy it that’s perfectly fine! You should and make your own opinion.

Personally - I’m waiting for another series to pique my interest more and reading the manga passively. But would I recommend it? Probably not.

The boruto manga is fairly good, two blue vortex is an improvement imo. the boruto anime you need to watch with the reminder to yourself that its the manga, a monthly manga, is meant to cover the more direct exact story, while the anime is meant to explore the wider boruto world and relationship building and going on more side missions. a lot of people dont like the filler specifically because it takes away from the direct story, but i really think it depends on what type of anime you like consuming, a lot of boruto might not be worth watching.

>a lot of people dont like the filler specifically because it takes away from the direct story

What I don't like about the filler is...
-A lot of filler arcs are like 1-2 episodes, in comparison to Naruto filler arcs, which are more like 4 episodes. The pacing is worse. Fewer plot twists (like the plot twists in the Cursed Warrior Extermination Mission or the Star Guard Mission). Fights are less dramatic and tend to just get resolved immediately with the good guys landing one punch and the bad guys landing 0 punches. (Compare how weak the fight was between Tsubaki and Sazanka in Boruto episode 231 vs the numerous and thorough fight scenes in the Peddlers Escort Mission in Naruto episodes 187-191 or in the Kurosuki Family Removal Mission).
-Some of the filler arcs are way too slice of life, like Sarada returning some kid's lost teddy bear, and don't conform to the action shonen genre so much.

Manga is okay. Anime is a weird mix of slice of life and "shit on every character you used to love from Naruto".

That's how they define " freedom of speech " unfortunately. You're not allowed to hate it even after watching enough episodes to realize how bad it is ( for me it was 180 ep before I said that's enough ), even if you were up to date with the manga ( and it's hardly a good manga ). should I watch Naruto before Boruto

best episodes of Boruto

how does Boruto compare to Naruto

anime similar to Boruto

AI Answer

🤖

Is it worth watching Boruto

Key Considerations for Watching Boruto:

  1. Connection to Naruto: If you enjoyed "Naruto" and "Naruto: Shippuden," watching "Boruto: Naruto Next Generations" can be rewarding as it continues the legacy of the original series and features familiar characters.

  2. Character Development: "Boruto" focuses on the next generation, particularly Boruto Uzumaki, and explores themes of friendship, legacy, and the challenges of living up to expectations. If you enjoy character-driven stories, this aspect may appeal to you.

  3. Animation Quality: The animation quality in "Boruto" is generally high, with vibrant visuals and well-choreographed fight scenes, especially in key episodes.

  4. Filler Episodes: Be aware that "Boruto" has a significant number of filler episodes, which can detract from the main storyline. If you prefer a more streamlined experience, you might want to skip these.

  5. Pacing and Story Arcs: The pacing can be slower compared to "Naruto," especially in the early episodes. However, the story does pick up with more engaging arcs as it progresses.

Takeaway: If you're a fan of the original "Naruto" series and enjoy character development and world-building, "Boruto" is worth watching. However, if you prefer a fast-paced narrative with minimal filler, you may want to approach it with caution or consider skipping to the more significant arcs.
