Comparing Boruto to Naruto

Character Development

In terms of character development, many fans feel that Naruto had more depth and progression compared to Boruto. While Boruto, Sarada, and Kawaki have received some development, the overall growth of characters in Boruto is seen as less satisfying than the journey experienced by Naruto and his peers [1:1]. The original series focused heavily on training and gradual power scaling, which added tension and emotional stakes to the characters' journeys [3:7].

Power Scaling and Fights

Boruto's power scaling has been a point of contention among fans. Many feel that the new generation of shinobi are too powerful too quickly, losing the gradual growth and tension that characterized Naruto's story [2:2], [3:2]. The fights in Boruto are noted for their good animation quality but lack the emotional weight and creativity seen in Naruto [1:1], [5:2]. The villains in Boruto often require intervention from overpowered main characters, which can detract from the sense of struggle and achievement [3:3].

Story and Themes

The overall story and themes of Boruto are perceived as weaker compared to Naruto. The plot is said to focus on powering up the new generation at the cost of sidelining original characters [2:2]. While Boruto does extend the storyline involving Kaguya and the Otsutsuki clan, it lacks the thematic resonance and ideological tension that made Naruto iconic [5:6], [5:9]. However, some fans appreciate the continuation and evolution of the universe, particularly after the timeskip [5:7].

Manga vs Anime

The Boruto manga is generally regarded as superior to the anime, which is criticized for being filled with slice-of-life filler episodes [5:1]. The manga offers a more concise and engaging narrative, though it still struggles to match the depth and world-building achieved in Naruto [4:3]. Fans who enjoy the manga often cite its plot twists and character designs as highlights [5:4].

Nostalgia Factor

A significant factor in the comparison between Boruto and Naruto is nostalgia. Many fans have fond memories of Naruto, which influences their perception of Boruto [5:10]. Despite this, Boruto has its own merits and appeals to those who are open to exploring new stories within the same universe.

I'm comparing Naruto part 1 to Boruto, since Boruto's timeskip hasn't happened.

Every character is likable in Boruto imo. Not that Naruto had less likable characters, but the genin in Boruto are better in my opinion.

Character development goes to Naruto. Boruto, Sarada, and K****i are the only ones to get some sort of development, I will say though, Boruto's development was very satisfying.

Fights are pretty even, Boruto's fights don't really have emotion behind it, like Naruto does. But I'm fine with that, Boruto's fights have good animation and quality, and the fights have the same vibe as the fights from Naruto. Plus, the use of taijutsu and mid-grade jutsus is awesome.

As of now, Boruto has some pretty good villains in both anime (Fabrications, Deepa) and manga. The only problem with the anime villains is that they'll have a good start, but writers get lazy and ruin them (cough cough Urashiki). Nonetheless, Boruto's average villains don't compare to Zabuza, Orochimaru, and Itachi. After the rest of the current manga gets adapted though, this will be a more debatable topic.

Looking at Boruto's manga, it's got a pretty good setup. I understand what the plot is, and it makes sense. A few questionable things, but nothing horrible. This is another topic that would be better once manga gets adapted, since only 15 chapters of Boruto has been adapted.

Yeah, there's 50 currently. And they release monthly. So with a weekly episode, you can't make episodes often. So the anime is building a huge gap so we can get into manga content. We're close to getting chapter 16 adapted within the next 10 episodes.

Boruto vs Naruto (includes shippuden and all dat)

Posted by its_oppong · in r/Naruto · 4 months ago

I’ve watched every episode of naruto, and was recently curious about boruto so i started watching it, I am halfway through second season.

I don’t know what it is, it just seems a bit rushed, in terms on strength levels, boruto and the kids seems too strong for their age or am i over reacting? Maybe it gets better ?

In the naruto series, there were characters we knew naruto couldn’t beat, so characters like kakashi and Guy, and the older ninjas were there to help, but now it seems the kids are strong enough for any mission, there doesn’t seem to be any progression?

Am I overreacting?

You’re not overreacting and it doesn’t get much better…

The plot is not good (it’s poorly executed at least) and is hell bent on powering up a few kids (especially Boruto).
At the same they completely weakened the original characters (perhaps to simply write them out of the plot…).
So, the idea here is to put the new generation in the spotlight at any cost.

The thing is, this doesn’t help the show the slightest.
There were other ways to make a sequel without destroying the power scale and the original characters.
Because in the end of the day it doesn’t even make sense. They tried to create a whole new generation of characters but those characters became instantly irrelevant the moment the power scale became so imbalanced.

Also, the new main character (and pretty much all the new characters) is handed down everything whereas Naruto started from nothing and had to work for everything (which was one the things that made this story so relatable).
And the new characters are not exactly interesting, because they lack depth and a complex background.

And yes, from one episode to another the characters suddenly have new techniques and powers (without any visible training).

I mean that’s to expected. It only has 80 chapters. There’s not much world building and character development you can do in that short amount of time. If it was longer than I think that things would be much better.

I know the anime makes them stronger and has them fight a lot more people but in the manga they don't really fight a lot of people honestly.

They only really fight Ao and Boro, they need teamwork, careful planning and trickery to beat Ao rather than overpowering him.

And Boro himself isn't actually as strong as people think, his main thing is his poison haxx which Team 7 is able to get around. And then they again use tactics rather than power, until Boro starts hulking out and Momoshiki steps in.

The kids apart from Boruto aren't hugely overpowered, and Boruto himself is a prodigy and has Karma to give him the excuse.

From clips I've seen of the anime, they do some training regardless, no? iirc we see Boruto train with Kakashi and etc.

Keep in mind this is a shonen afterall, its not crazy that the gap in growth gets huge. We have Goten practically stronger than Frieza as a 6 year old or Gohan with no training able to raise his power level beyond even Goku's without any prior training.

You’re right, Boruto power scaling feels rushed compared to Naruto. The kids get strong too fast, losing gradual growth and tension that made Naruto great. It’s a common complaint.

Boruto started off with a stronger villain than Naruto ended with. Now most Boruto villains can only be fought by a very few OP MCs.

I think the power scaling in Boruto is inconsistent and a bit lazy but i feel this stems from the fact the manga is monthly and the anime is always inconsistent

Boruto slams

3 upvotes on reddit
AIGENERATED9460 · 4 months ago

Boruto does feel faster-paced compared to Naruto, especially in how strong the new gen kids seem early on. But that’s by design. Unlike Naruto, who started as an underdog, Boruto and his peers are the children of elite shinobi, raised in a peaceful era with access to better training, tech, and knowledge. It makes sense that they’re starting at a higher baseline.

What can make it feel rushed is that the early arcs (especially in the anime) don’t always match the characters’ power level with meaningful threats. That gives off the vibe that they’re overpowered, when in reality, they’re just well-trained for low-stakes situations.

Also, keep in mind — Naruto had 100+ episodes before even touching major plot. Boruto is more front-loaded in its mystery and long-term conflict (Ōtsutsuki, Karma, etc.), so the narrative pacing is different by nature.

Once you get into the later arcs and especially the manga (Boruto: Two Blue Vortex), the power ceiling becomes much clearer, and you see that the kids are still outclassed by the real threats.

So yeah, a bit of an overreaction, but a common one. Stick with it — or better yet, check out the manga for a tighter experience.

> they’re just well-trained for low-stakes situations.

Also: teamwork.

Not just New Team 7 but even during the Academy everybody had decent-to-good teamwork which helped a lot in reducing the enemy threat.

While actual teamwork in OG Naruto was uncommon at best.

You mean Sarada getting MS by ch 22 after a short time skip is not rushing and jumping loops?

Yeah, the scaling is out of control. The author has lost any meaning in progression. Gone is the day characters are shown training, practicing?

Remember Naruto and Sasuke practicing their signature moves? Learning how to walk on tree/water? Learning to use sage chakra? Nah!

Characters just instantly get abilities, don’t need to practice, chakra is infinity until the story tells you otherwise.

Well actually going by page count, it'd be around Sasuke Retrieval in the end of Gaara vs Kimmaro or even to where base Naruto clash rasengan with Sasuke's chidori to later on KN0 Naruto healing his huge wound from the next Chidori. Monthly Boruto is 45-47 pages compared to a weekly series which is 19 pages per week according to Ikemoto.

45x92/19=217.8 and 47x92/19=227.5 round to 228

So it'd be around Naruto chapter 217-228 with Boruto having 92 chapters (Mitsuki one shot included in NNG volume 1).

Definitely not as good as P1 Naruto. Boruto side characters have too much development problems while P1 Naruto did it quite well. The characters the manga only really did well so far is Boruto, Kawaki, Momoshiki, & some of the old gen kind of. 2BV is at least making side characters more relevant than NNG but it is still recovering from the problems NNG left so it will be many chapters until it even gets even remotely comparable. P1 manga Kiba basically around the same shine if not more than even manga Sarada/Mitsuki for example so far. The omnipotence arc was one of the best arcs and gave characters good roles. The powerscaling makes sense why the side characters can't defeat the Shinju I will say. Most of the NNG fights are a huge quality drop from P1 Naruto. 2BV quite improved in this aspect from NNG for the most part and seems to be getting closer to be in line to Naruto's fight quality finally. Still, I'd give the Boruto manga an 8/10 overall currently. The Boruto anime at least fixed a lot of the fights and side characters but it can still be problematic.

Is Boruto Manga worth reading?

I may be considered as fan of the Naruto, but I tried to watch Boruto several times, as I'm in love with the universe and characters in it.

Unfortunately, I never managed to watch Boruto fully, after some time I was throwing it away, again and again.

As far as I know, series of Boruto which are already released are mostly fillers, I was thinking maybe that's the reason of disappointment, so the question is is Manga worth reading, or it cannot be compared with OG naruto?

Yes it is worth it great story with amazing plot twists, amazing characters writting wise on level of naruto characters speaking of og cast they were NOT done dirty dont listen to ppl that say ts naruto, sasuke, shikamaru and even characters like ao or moegi got a peak development if u already like kaguya and otsutsuki idea then great but if not tbh I belive boruto can make u like them and overall villan cast in boruto is really good especially after timeskip main themes of the story are Love and enduring as a shinobi. Character designs are amazing and new powers are very intresting, there is a bunch of great symbolism and parrallels to old characters, amazing fight scenes (they are using alot of taijutsu way more then some bigass attacks) my personal only problem is 2nd or 3rd arc i dont remeber wich one was it but it was pretty boring but rest is peak trust (and idk have u read naruto but if not then artstyle shouldnt be a problem to u, at the beginning it is kinda mid bcs ikkemoto tries to copy kishimoto artstyle but it gets better and better) and man plot twists are actually amazing same as the story atlest for me deff the most overhated and underrated animanga i've read (im a huge fan of naruto and boruto btw so as a naruto fan u can like boruto 😭😭)pls read ts its so peak

Naruto’s character arc has regressed dramatically. His fight with Delta was a mechanical slugfest devoid of emotional stakes or creative choreography in this fight he is Stripped of his intelligence. As Hokage, he’s sidelined in major decisions and reduced to a passive figurehead. He once vowed to change the shinobi system, yet the world remains fundamentally unchanged just look at the Rain Village. His emotional intelligence, a defining trait throughout Naruto and Shippuden, is muted. Core beliefs like breaking the cycle of hatred and peace through understanding are absent a man who once vowed never to break his promises break one on the birthday episode given it's only in the anime though. My bro Kurama’s death that when I knew that this manga has no respect for the OG characters, his death should have been a seismic emotional moment, had no narrative payoff. Naruto’s grief was barely explored. Despite Kurama being a foundational part of his identity, they made their Bond a plot device . Compared to his reaction to Jiraiya’s death, this should’ve been even more devastating, like honestly, boruto lacks serious death

Sasuke is worse. His Rinnegan, is a glorified transport now having a Rinnegan is not impressive anymore it's a status symbol sasuke tactical brilliance with it is gone philosophical depth, is reduced to a glorified teleportation tool. Its loss was abrupt, unearned, and narratively hollow. Sasuke no longer embodies the ideological tension between revolution and peace he didn't feel like himself anymore. He’s reactive, not philosophical used as a plot device rather than a dynamic character. The thematic erosion it's so obvious right in your face across Boruto that it is undeniable . Naruto once tackled ideological warfare, loneliness and belonging, hard work versus natural talent, forgiveness and empathy, and peace through sacrifice. Boruto, by contrast, offers diluted themes, shallow emotional stakes, and no philosophical depth Ultimately, Naruto and Sasuke once dynamic forces, flawed and ever so charging are now static shadows of their former selves. There’s a fundamental disconnect between Boruto, Shippuden, and Naruto not just in tone, but in it's very soul. Naruto’s legacy has been undermined, and the emotional resonance that once defined the series has been stripped away

Honestly, Boruto is peak. Even the more slice of life stuff. I can say that I understand if people don't like it, but that would be a lie. I like feeling good sometimes, and I like seeing people be happy and at peace. Which was the entire reason Naruto ended the way it did. Because EVERYONE was sick of the cycle of hatred. So seeing Naruto accomplish his goal of peace, and watching that play out through his son, has been very heartwarming. Don't get me wrong though, I absolutely love the action involved as well.

So op I’m going to say this in a non malicious and non jaded way - as unbiased as I can.

  • The series starts off slow - especially if you’re someone who started from Naruto. If someone was totally new to the franchise, it could be more interesting. Given you have background - you’re going to find a lot lackluster. You don’t even get past the movie until much later in the series.

  • It’s hard to like Boruto as a character when you start as a Naruto fan because he’s Naruto polar opposite - from the boy who had nothing to the boy who has everything (except a dad whose available).

  • Again - totally new to the universe? People will understand Boruto better. Naruto vet? You’ll think he’s a brat because he doesn’t get the attention he wants from his dad (again - Naruto had it much worse).

  • The story is less interesting because we have these top tier characters that can defeat any opponent. Plus - a lot of what Boruto and his team learn just doesn’t hold the weight that Naruto’s story did.

  • Finally, the most important piece - if you try Boruto and enjoy it that’s perfectly fine! You should and make your own opinion.

Personally - I’m waiting for another series to pique my interest more and reading the manga passively. But would I recommend it? Probably not.

The boruto manga is fairly good, two blue vortex is an improvement imo. the boruto anime you need to watch with the reminder to yourself that its the manga, a monthly manga, is meant to cover the more direct exact story, while the anime is meant to explore the wider boruto world and relationship building and going on more side missions. a lot of people dont like the filler specifically because it takes away from the direct story, but i really think it depends on what type of anime you like consuming, a lot of boruto might not be worth watching.

>a lot of people dont like the filler specifically because it takes away from the direct story

What I don't like about the filler is...
-A lot of filler arcs are like 1-2 episodes, in comparison to Naruto filler arcs, which are more like 4 episodes. The pacing is worse. Fewer plot twists (like the plot twists in the Cursed Warrior Extermination Mission or the Star Guard Mission). Fights are less dramatic and tend to just get resolved immediately with the good guys landing one punch and the bad guys landing 0 punches. (Compare how weak the fight was between Tsubaki and Sazanka in Boruto episode 231 vs the numerous and thorough fight scenes in the Peddlers Escort Mission in Naruto episodes 187-191 or in the Kurosuki Family Removal Mission).
-Some of the filler arcs are way too slice of life, like Sarada returning some kid's lost teddy bear, and don't conform to the action shonen genre so much.

I heard it has a slice of life aspect attached to it and that got me interested but honestly I didn't really like Shippuden that much and it's been a long time since I watched OG Naruto so I'm not sure if I have the patience to watch it. Is it as dragged out as Shippuden? And how much better/worse is it than Naruto (OG and Shippuden)

If you didn't like the more plot-based approach of Shippuden, you might like the chill slice-of-life vibe of Boruto

My main problem with Shippuden was that it was too dragged out. Is boruto any better?

there are 2 small arcs somewhere in the 20s or 30s that are pretty slow, but on the whole, I'd say the show is well-paced

It's bad. And no, episode 65 doesn't make up for it's badness. The only reason I'm watching this franchise milking sack of shit is because I have an unhealthy obsession with Sarada but it infuriates me to no end to think that there's probably a whole generation of Japanese kids that watch this steaming pile of garbage instead of the original Naruto.

I don't know if I'd call it SoL but it's a lot more episodic. Think about what Naruto was like before the Zabuza arc and that's pretty much the majority of Boruto except with a cast of children that are 100 times less memorable and interesting than the original gang. The few subplots it actually has are all extremely lacklustre.

We need a time jump already so sadara can actually be badass. So much potential

I'm both dreading and anticipating the inevitable time skip. On one hand I'm, of course, excited about grown-up Sarada and Mitsuki is already one of the coolest characters but on the other hand, with the time skip will come the inevitable departure from Naruto and Sasuke as the main problem solvers for the series. I know the time will come but I really hope they will have one last hurrah before that happens and not like what they had versus Momishiki because they were both incredibly nerfed in that fight, especially Sasuke. Man, I'm really hoping he gets an artificial arm like Naruto before his last big fight. I'd hate Sasuke's last iteration to be forever handicapped.

how does Boruto compare to Naruto

Key Considerations in Comparing Boruto to Naruto

  1. Story Focus:

    • Naruto: Centers on Naruto Uzumaki's journey from an outcast to a respected ninja and leader, emphasizing themes of friendship, perseverance, and self-discovery.
    • Boruto: Follows Naruto's son, Boruto Uzumaki, who grapples with living in his father's shadow and seeks his own identity while navigating the challenges of a more modernized ninja world.
  2. Character Development:

    • Naruto: Features deep character arcs, particularly for Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, with significant growth throughout the series.
    • Boruto: While it introduces new characters and explores their development, some fans feel it lacks the same depth and emotional weight as Naruto's character arcs.
  3. Tone and Themes:

    • Naruto: Has a more serious tone, dealing with themes of war, loss, and redemption.
    • Boruto: Incorporates a lighter, more comedic tone, reflecting the everyday lives of the next generation, but still addresses serious issues like legacy and expectations.
  4. Pacing and Structure:

    • Naruto: Features a more traditional shonen structure with clear arcs and battles that build tension.
    • Boruto: Has been critiqued for its pacing, with some filler episodes and a more episodic approach that can detract from overarching plot development.
  5. Fan Reception:

    • Naruto: Generally regarded as a classic with a dedicated fanbase, praised for its storytelling and character development.
    • Boruto: Mixed reviews; while some fans appreciate the continuation of the story and new characters, others feel it doesn't live up to its predecessor.

Takeaway: If you're a fan of character-driven stories and epic battles, Naruto may resonate more with you. Boruto offers a fresh perspective on the next generation but may not capture the same emotional depth for all viewers. If you enjoyed Naruto, it's worth giving Boruto a try, but manage your expectations regarding character development and pacing.
