Best Equipment and Strategies to Scan Leviathans in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Use the Prawn Suit for protection and distraction.
  • Employ circle strafing and dodging techniques.
  • Utilize fish as distractions during scans.

Prawn Suit Strategy

The Prawn Suit is a popular choice for scanning leviathans due to its durability and ability to distract the creature. Some players suggest letting the leviathan attack the Prawn Suit while you exit and scan, as it will be occupied with the suit [4:3]. Although there is a bug where leviathans may still attack empty suits, getting out just before the bite can provide a window for scanning [4:1].

Circle Strafing and Dodging

A common technique is to use circle strafing and dodging to avoid attacks while scanning. Many players recommend staying behind the leviathan or focusing on its tail to minimize the risk of being bitten [1:1], [3:5]. The idea is to dodge their attacks and scan during the cooldown period [1:4], [4:5].

Fish Distraction Method

Another creative method involves using fish as distractions. By releasing fish between yourself and the charging leviathan, the creature will pause to eat the fish, giving you a few seconds to continue scanning [2:2]. This technique can be repeated multiple times with different fish to increase scanning time.

Terrain Exploitation

Using the environment to your advantage can also be effective. Finding areas that are too small for leviathans to enter allows you to safely scan them while they attempt to reach you [3:1], [4:2]. This strategy works particularly well with Shadow Leviathans, which can be lured into crevices [1:2].

Alternative Methods

Though not directly related to equipment, some players have successfully scanned leviathans by tanking hits and using med kits to restore health [3:2]. Additionally, saving the game before attempting a scan can allow for trial and error without permanent consequences [3:3]. While these methods require patience and resilience, they offer alternative approaches for those struggling with more conventional strategies.

ORIGINAL POST

I really want to scan the Chelicerates (regular and Void) and Shadow Leviathans, but without a stasis rifle like in the first game I dont know how to go about it.

If you have attempted to, how did you scan the leviathans without being eaten? Whats the best strategy to survive long enough to scan and tell the tale?

ParasaurolophusZ · 1 year ago

Chelicerate is bad at cornering. I got pretty close to it and strayed in a circle around it while scanning.

Shadow leviathan is harder since it's so fast when on payrol. There are some crevices small enough for the sea truck to hide in that the leviathan can't get into, but you need to lure it there and hope it stats long enough to scan before it loses interest.

Well, you can always kill it with the PRAWN suit and scan the corpse. If you don’t want to do that, gotta learn to dodge good. Use the seaglide and try to stay behind them. It’s not easy, as those things tend to move pretty fast, and you can’t scan while seagliding.

If they charge at you, dodge to the side and past them - they usually don’t turn well enough to follow.

Dodge its attack and scan while its attack is on cooldown - there isn’t really a 100% reliable method in this game

Tips for scanning leviathans

So! What I did for my first leviathan (Reaper Leviathan) was to park the seamoth somewhere safer and then swim around the little guy while dodging his bites and trying my best to scan him. Since then, I've upgraded my seamoth and all, so I'm a little more scared to lose it hahahha.

Any tips are welcome!

You can catch like 5+ of a fish and put it on your tool bar. When it charges and gets close, release a fish between you. It will hit and kill the fish, interrupt the charge, and do a little loop to restart another charge. It'll give you a couple seconds each sacrificial fish (sacrifishial) to progress the scan.

Leviathan Scanning Tips?

So basically, i scanned every leviathan in subnautica. my method was, stasis rifle 1, scan a bunch, stasis rifle 2, scan a bunch more and stasis rifle maybe one last time and then get the scan, stasis rifle and gtfo. however, after seeing it wasnt in below zero, i knew i was cooked. but, is there any other way to do this? well thats why im making this post.

Ghosties often get stuck on terrain making them free scans, and reapers struggle to hit you if you strafe sideways. You can also just tank hits from them and use med kits to fix your health and keep scanning. The sea dragon is much harder though as it’s very fast and can one shot

Whoops, sorry just realized this is about Below Zero. Just tank hits and use med kits, use reinforced dive suit to help

With no stasis gun my only idea is balls, circle strafing, and lotsa first aid.

An alternate strategy is to let it eat your prawn suit, then get out and scan it while it's busy chowing down.

The prawn suit will be fine, and you'll get plenty of progress on the scan. Just repair your prawn and repeat.

1 upvotes on reddit
Nemomoo · OP · 4 years ago

Why the suit and not the truck?

1 upvotes on reddit
R
ranmafan0281 · 4 years ago

The suit is way tougher. Also you can actually get out of it way faster - fast enough you can get out just as it tries to eat the suit.

By right, levis ignore unmanned vehicles. But the prawn suit is bugged right now so they’ll still attack empty prawn suits. Not sure if getting out just before the leviathan bites will change in the future but that’s how I got mine.

Posted on your steam workshop already but I'll post here as well. I have my own 245k sub that I just sent in blind and it beat it at 5000, 4000, and 3000 meters starting distance. 2000 seems to be a coin clip as to who wins. I started all fights at 10x and 10Y grid coords

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3290790298

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3290782376 5000 meter start

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3290782191 2000 meter start.

At around 3000 meters I added some more gantries to the decoys, but that about it

Edit: Had to reupload sub since my decoys somehow broke and I had to remove and replace the missile controller

Anti-Submarine warfare is something most of my crafts have at least some capacity for, but I've never made any kind of dedicated anti-sub platform.

I might well give it a poke!

It looks like it's a broadsiding craft but it has a singular main gun, is there any reason not to have some redundancy there rather than one primary weapon?

19 upvotes on reddit
hog188 · OP · 1 year ago

its kinda a broadsider, but its more of a run and gun sniper, ai is set to 1500m or 2200m against anything that outweighs it, so it mostly spends its battles running away shooting over its shoulder (at honestly a terrible angle for its armor, but the evasiveness is worth it)

in terms of redundancy there isn't space in this build, the hull is only wide enough for the turret in one spot, I chose to keep the target as small as possible, ive tried to basically use everything except spending mats on armor (stealth combined with detection error, speed, free water armor, small target)

8 upvotes on reddit
T
TheMarksmanHedgehog · 1 year ago

It'll be a tricky nut to crack, it might even necessitate I make a new craft to deal with it.

How's it handle long range detection?

This is my first craft I would consider Neter worthy or "godly" . Im sure there are many things that can be improved and I would love feedback and advice. this is the optimized version of the previously uploaded mk2

The Leopard seal family of craft were designed as a dedicated sub hunter, using a mix of active defenses and speed this craft is able to take out every Neter submarine, as well as causing serious trouble for surface vessels and larger aircraft.

Stats:

320k material

combat speed 34mps @ 100m depth

surface speed 60mps (sits at a strange angle on the surface to keep more propellers in the water)

armament:

172mm Railgun, 2m sabot at 1984mps, 202rpm

6 medium sonar torps low angle frag

4 medium remote guided fast torps shaped charge head

18 medium sort range Vls radar missiles frag/kinetic - one turns just above surface, uses short range thruster to beat lams and cwis, 1.5km effective range (these are useless in an anti sub role but they provide a decent amount of air defense and multi-role flexibility, the seal beats the mobula, the airotyrant and some grey tallon godlys depite being out costed and not being designed for the role)

defenses:

thin armor, 2m alloy 1m metal, up to 2Alloy 3Metal in thicker spots. alloy has the second lowest sonar signature after rubber.

3 sonar distractor sticks

9 basic small counter torps

12 small counter torps with HE for cluster damage

2 Radar boiys for surface and air targets

full strength planar shields

full smoke coverage for stealth, sets smokes to 10 if enemy has a very powerful engine

ECM jammer at max strength, minimum power priority, so all excess power is used for jamming but important systems are never deprived.

A quick list of neter craft the Leopard Seal will beat in a fight

. every submarine (it has struggled once against the disemboweler)

.the DWG

.the OW - it took 2 mk2's to defeat the sronghold but one mk3 can get the job done. It can struggle with the Eire

.the SS ships* mk 3 beats the tyr nearly 100% and is capable of posing a credible threat to the meg

.every SS & LH aircraft

.almost every WF craft (beats the perfirator but not the leviathan)

.every plane

This craft wins by chipping away slowly while not being hit. Its a glass peashooter and could be countered very easily with a dedicated craft. mk3 no longer suffers total turret destruction after switching to kinetic shells.

one of the most powerful changes I made form mk2 to mk3 is using acbs to switch behaviors/ ai's. the craft fights way better bellow 1500m however so do most battleships. by making the seal fight larger craft at 2200m it went from 0% wins against tyr (only a matter of time before it eats a barrage) to 90% (there is still a chance Tyr hits) and about a 30% win rate against a megladon 1v1 but it takes most of an hour of meg shooting in the dark.

hog188 · OP · 1 year ago

I would really like some strong (well engineered not overmatched) opponents who can beat, destroy, threaten or have a fair fight with my sub, I probably haven't reached my limit testing against neter, but it would be nice to have some training partners that I haven't been able to design around from the ground up.

feel free to throw whatever you like against it, subs ships, space, dedicated antisub, whatever, I am hoping to learn from it so any result is good for me. i do however play on a potato, so if you do fancy pitting it against something larger than say 700k or just a laggy build id love it if you sent a video instead of a workshop file because it'l be pain for me to run.

5 upvotes on reddit
reptiles_are_cool · 1 year ago

how about a glass cannon of a ship, an absolutely horrendously designed abomination? because that's what I make. i can probably make something with antisub capabilities. but whether or not it will be a fair fight foe my build or yours is uncertain. i tend to build things and see why it works, not why it doesn't. for example, i tested everything i could thing of for cwis, and can confirm everything but pac and flamethrowers can be used for cwis, including nukes. yes, nukes as cwis. its definiatly not the best idea, but it works.

so, as it is a sub, a spacecraft would feel kind of cheaty, so i will go with a plane. matching the mat cost would give me a large plane, so I should have plenty of room for many torpedoes or magnet bombs. i shall create my anti sub plane and test it soon.

I have an old tournament submission that you can face against. Here is the showcase for it:

You can find the blueprint in the FTD arena tournament discord, on the channel “collection-combined-fleet-tournament”.

Here is the link for the server:

The file name is “Adun_MK3”.

On the same channel, you might also want to try against the “Kaiju_Nudibranch” and the “Exalted_Sandblaster_the_Blaster_of_Sand”, but these are more dedicated tournament designs.

I am in mid game, I am post sunbeams destruction but not to the point where im going 500m down and building giant machines since the only vehicle I have is a seamoth. I am thinking about facing my fear and actually confronting a reaper leviathan, to scan one. All self defense I have is a statis rifle and a thermal blade. What is the best place to confront a reaper leviathan and scan it and possibly get away with it dead or me alive. I am looking for a big wide open place where I am able to get it's attention without drawing the attention of its friends, also a place where I can see properly aka a clear and open place. Which place is best for this?

Get a stasis rifle. Attract the leviathan's attention by swimming closer to it, but be careful not to get too close. Once it lets out its warcry and rams towards you, charge up your as stasis rifle as much as possible (but don't wait too long if it is in your face) and unleash it at it's head. Scan it completely, then seaglide away in the opposite direction as fast as possible.

Once you actually get around to doing this practice you will not notice that carnivorous leviathans aren't nearly as perceptive or aggressive as your fears confirm, so it may take a while to provoke them, even if you are very close.

I would scan the one in the Blood Kelp Zone or the ones in the Grand Reef as they’d be way less aggressive.

If you really wanna scan a Dead Zone one though, I’d go with a shark cage. Build a line of Foundations from the top of the cliff stretching out into the open water, and then build a multipurpose room a bit of distance off the last one so it’s got the legs on all sides. You can hide inside the legs and scan them thru the bars. If they surround you though they’ll probably be able to bite you thru them.

Best equipment to scan leviathans in subnautica

Key Considerations for Scanning Leviathans in Subnautica:

  1. Scanner Tool: The primary equipment you'll need is the Scanner. This handheld device allows you to scan various creatures, including leviathans, to gather data about them.

  2. Proximity: Leviathans are large and often aggressive. Approach them cautiously to avoid damage. Use stealth or stay at a safe distance when scanning.

  3. Vehicle Options:

    • Seamoth: A small, personal submarine that provides protection and allows you to get closer to leviathans without putting yourself in danger.
    • Prawn Suit: This exosuit can be equipped with a grappling arm, which can help you maneuver around leviathans while keeping a safe distance.
  4. Location Awareness: Familiarize yourself with the habitats of different leviathans (e.g., Reaper Leviathan, Sea Dragon Leviathan) to know where to find them for scanning.

  5. Time of Day: Scanning during the day can help you see better and avoid ambushes, as some leviathans are more active at night.

Recommendation: Use the Scanner in combination with the Seamoth for a safer scanning experience. The Seamoth provides mobility and protection, allowing you to get close enough to scan leviathans without being attacked. Always be prepared to retreat if a leviathan becomes aggressive.
