Understanding Leviathan Locations
Leviathans in Subnautica are distributed across various biomes, each with its own unique set of leviathans. For example, the Dunes and Crash Zone are known for having a high concentration of Reaper Leviathans [4:1]
[4:5]. The Void is home to Ghost Leviathans that are aggressive and will attack on sight
[4:2]. If you're looking for Sea Treader Leviathans, they typically travel in groups along the Sea Treader's Path, which connects to the Dunes and Grand Reef
[5:1]
[5:2].
Strategies for Finding Leviathans
To locate leviathans effectively, players can use several strategies. One approach is to explore specific biomes known for certain leviathans, such as the Lava Lakes for the Sea Dragon Leviathan or the Lost River for other story-related leviathans [3:1]. Using interactive maps available online can also help pinpoint leviathan locations
[4:1]. Additionally, setting up scanner rooms with range upgrades can aid in detecting leviathans like the Sea Treaders if they are not visible due to game bugs or slow terrain loading
[5:2].
Avoiding Leviathan Attacks
When exploring areas with leviathans, it's crucial to be prepared to avoid attacks. Some players have found success using smaller vehicles like the Seaglide, which tends to attract less attention from leviathans compared to larger vehicles like the Sea Truck [2]. For those using larger vehicles, maneuvering techniques such as strafing and changing depth quickly can help evade leviathan attacks
[2:1].
Building Observatories
For players interested in observing leviathans rather than avoiding them, building an observatory in a biome with a high concentration of leviathans can be a rewarding experience. The Dunes, with its numerous Reaper Leviathans, is a popular choice for such projects [4:3]. Setting up bases near these areas allows for close observation, but be prepared for frequent encounters with these massive creatures.
By understanding the habitats and behaviors of leviathans, players can enhance their exploration and survival experiences in Subnautica.
A leviathan that is not too big but stealthy and sensitive to light in a very dark biome. A leviathan thats sensitive to sound thats guarding an important resource. Leviathans that can work together to destroy your large vessel or maybe just to hunt and trap you. A very large and very slow leviathan that can finish you in one hit.
I appreciate all of your responses, sadly this is an unofficial post and can't really do anything to get them added. These are ALL great suggestions and hope at least one of these can get added to subnautica 2. 😁
I think it would be fun to have at least one leviathan that’s so big you don’t see it for what it is, until there is some big realization. Like maybe there’s this cool biome that has all these great resources, and then you realize there’s a big eyeball looking at you, and the whole ground moves…
I think there is an island hermit crab thingy in the trailer.
just a larger variety of them in general would be great
Kraken
I’m not going to be specific due to potential spoilers but I just had to go to an area with a leviathan for some fragments and I didn’t want to risk my sea truck so I just went with my seaglide, rebreather and fully upgraded oxygen tank
I realized that where before with a Sea truck the leviathan would’ve been on me like a mosquito in summer it almost completely ignored me and even though this was at 300m it wasn’t that much of a hassle to get air
Tldr: without vehicles leviathan just leaves you alone for the most part
I’m sure this isn’t new but it’s new to me
I was playing yesterday and realized there’s a relatively easy way to dodge them with the truck (works with the sea glide too). I always forget about the controls to bring you closer to the surface, or further down. I’m on Xbox, so for me it’s the bumpers.
When I get too close and I know I’ll be attacked, I strafe either right or left, and then use the bumper controls to either drop down or raise above the leviathans.
They suck at turning and also don’t strike at angles very well. So if you can maneuver your truck around them like this, you can confuse them and dart away. I can usually do it in one try, distract them, move far enough away they don’t notice me anymore, and then I wait for them to pass.
I’ve come face to face with a leviathan every time I’ve gone into their biome this play through, but I haven’t been grabbed yet. My seatruck doesn’t have any speed upgrades, but only two modules so far.
That works when you are swimming around squarks too when they start to bark, just go straight up and they will miss you and often just give up for a small amount of time
I just stop driving/release the controls and stand in my truck. If I'm not at the wheel they don't attack.
[NO SPOILERS] Hi all! I’m pretty new to subnautica and I’m running around on creative mode right now. The game just told me “there’s damage to the plant life which suggests a massive creature is near here”, then it said it sensed “multiple class leviathins”. I’m currently 1040m under the surface and just saw a ghost leviathan but I really wanna see the others. Do I need to go deeper ir he there a way to draw them out? Earlier near the aurora I was in a seamoth and the reaper leviathan swam up to me (grated he grabbed the ship but still). Would something like that work in this area to?
Are these the only leviathans you’ve seen?
Yup just the ghost and reapers. Technically I scanned something called a reef leviathin but it didn’t seem dangerous
3 leviathans remain, one is found at the lava lakes (hard to miss him), another on the sea treader’s path (southwest of your Lifepod), and a last one found as part of the story in the lost river (it’s not actually a river per-say)
Edit: only the lava one is dangerous
Head right behind the auraura to find sammy the safety reaper
I’m sorry The Who now?
There is 8 reapers around the Aurora and they all have names
Sammy the safety reaper
i want to make a leviathan observatory but i’m not sure what area has the most that are near each other (apart from reefbacks and sea shitters)
Probably the dunes for reapers. Or the void.
I thought the Void only has ghost leviathans that try to murder you on sight.
I think a couple reapers also spawn but yes they all try to kill you/make you go back to the map
The outer edge of the dunes would probably be the ideal place.
I'd say the Dunes, iirc there's 11 reapers there, permanent ambiant noises
"Build in the Dunes!" I said, "What could go wrong?" I said.
*rocks back and forth from the constant screaming of the Reaper that is like 50 to 100 meters from my base at the worst of times*
To be fair, I did build my base at the border of the Dunes and Mushroom Forest, but there is a Reaper really close and I can sometimes see it when I look out of my observatory. So, yeah, if you want to build in Reaper territory, you can build in the Dunes.
My next base is probably gonna be in the inactive lava zone to say hi to the Sea Dragon. lol
11 reapers in Dunes? wow that`s a lot, I really should explore Dunes in greater detail
You absolutely should. It is bursting with goodies and resources.
I love the idea of a levitation observatory! Post pics!
The crash zone has 10 reapers. 6 of them are located on the south end of the Aurora.
Google should have at least 2 different interactive maps that show the leviathan locations
If you want a bunch of one type I’d say dunes or crash zone. Void for ghost. I don’t think there’s really anywhere that has reapers or ghosts close enough to see both from one spot.
I'm currently in Sea Treader's Path, however I only saw one Sea Treader and after he left, i have nothing else! Ive tried to restart the game but nothing happens and i also didnt get the pda message after entering the biome.. can someone help me?
There are 2 paths. One connecting to the Dunes and one on an elevated part of the Grand Reef. If you just follow the barren road they've pounded into the sand, you SHOULD find them in small family groups of 2-4.
Now, there IS a bug where if the terrain loads in too slowly, the sea treaders may fall through the world and be lost to the void forever. If you're noticing a distinct slowness in terrain loading, that may be your problem.
Another way to try finding them is to set up a small scanner outpost w/ 4x range mods and scanning for them, they SHOULD show up on the scan list if they're in range.
Thank you! I will go there and check again, if i cant find them ill ses through the scanner room!!
I've been there, they usually walk in groups and make migrations in places where you would put them as a last option (they rarely go to other biomes), if my PS4 hadn't died I would have set up an observation center to study them...
I have no sea treaders on my game idk why
My friend really wants to see a leviathan but we searched every where around the aurora but It just wasn't there so if there is one can you tell me a console command please
/spawnreaperleviathan /spawnghostleviathan /spawnseadragonleviathan Might be wrong on the sea dragon one
how do i spawn the juvenile version of the ghost leviathan?
This didn’t work, any other help?
If you type "fog" into the console it'll extend your visual range a lot, helping you find Sammy.
Or just head North for a long time
/spawn seaemperorjuvenile /spawn ghostleviathan /spawn reaperleviathan /spawn seadragon
wait you can still use the console? How? (on pc btw)
how in the hell did you not find a reaper??? this is like magic i don't get it-
Although the Sn2 discord chat has made it clear that the dev team won’t be making leviathans killable, I still believe that it would be a great idea for leviathans to be killed by other leviathan species as well as leviathans within the same species. This would not only create tight situations where you’re caught in between two leviathans fighting for territory, but also a new way to deal with leviathans, being that you could lure a larger leviathan to the smaller leviathan you want to be delt with, and the smaller would be killed and never bother you in that area again. This strategy can be seen in Ark (which I know is much different than Subnautica in a myriad of ways), but would still be pretty applicable to Subnautica in my opinion if allowed.
Some people may say that this makes dealing with leviathans “too easy” and “not a realistic feature in a survival game” if you can just lure an apex leviathan to a smaller one, however I believe that the process of “luring” the leviathan would still be a high risk situation (as the larger leviathan could easily eat you or simply replace the leviathan in the area you want leviathan free), is still very applicable to a survival game. For instance, luring sea dragon to kill a reaper leviathan, the reaper leviathan would be delt with but you still have the risk of the sea dragon prowling around.
Imagine the situation on our world: There’s a shark that keeps on stopping you from exploring this sunken shipwreck that you need to go to. So, you lure a killer whale over (which could also kill you) to deal with the shark. The shark is killed by the killer whale, so you’re able to loot the wreck while the killer whale is feeding on the shark remains, and then stealthily leave the area.
Although the luring mechanic may be a bit too “off the deep end” for Sn2, i believe that the ability to encounter leviathan fights would be a quite cool feature.
The idea of using a leviathan to distract a leviathan has a lot of cool potential
I think a mechanic like this would be awesome for injuring or distracting leviathans, but tbh I agree with the devs on not killing them.
From what we've seen it looks like there's a squid type leviathan that can grab small fast vehicles and stuff, so being able to lure a leviathan over to distract it would be super fun.
They're making the leviathans indestructible?
I dont like to actively get rid of them but damn that's kinda odd
I get why, but I still want some kind of temporary solution or deterrent for them, rather not have a constant looming threat of just sitting and waiting to be eaten
I would honestly love an area overrun with a jellyfish swarm like a cave entrance you have to lure a creature to to get access
I always wanted to see a Sea Dragon come up and take a Reaper. To see parts of the ecosystem in action.
Like a shark with a seal. As an introduction seeing that stuff would be neat to watch. We see the Reapers take the various smaller organisms out there but a scripted “reaper hunt” involving a sea Dragon would be neat to watch.
i absolutely dont disagree. this kinda stuff gets the team really excited. hopefully we can impress in a future EA release. ty for your thoughts!
So I’ve been playing subnautica for a week now and I haven’t seen any reaper or ghost leviathans in my world I’ve been to both islands and In the aurora several times I’ve even built a base right next to it and they just don’t seem to spawn can anyone tell me what’s happening
Reapers only spawn in areas that are on the edge of the map (Mountains to the NE, Crash Zone to the East, Dunes to the West). You can play the main elements of the game without bumping into one as those aren't essential areas (outside of the Aurora in Crash).
Ghost leviathans are a spoiler so don't read the rest if you want to avoid all technical spoilers.
There is one Ghostie in Blood Kelp to the NW, and two in the Grand Reef to the SW. Again all three spawn in places you'd not go normally so you can avoid those too without realizing it. If you're just exploring randomly you'll probably run into a leviathan eventually.
If you go directly behind aurora there should be one there and too far in front. Going to either island you shouldn't see any
Actually, one of the islands DOES have one nearby. >!it's the gun island one!<
You can evade that one, but it does swim there.
Agreed but it's not one you cone across easily
Thanks man
Go to the aurora with cyclops without silent power and full ahead. Then they'll pop up
This is definitely a spoiler post, both the question and by necessity almost all of the answers. So, anyone who wants to find out for themselves should stop reading here.
Non spoiler answer and last chance for people who don't want spoilers to stop reading: yes they're there, you just haven't been in quite the right places yet.
Seriously spoiler answer follows, you have been warned: From the lifepod to the floating island you will not ever see a hostile leviathan if you travel in a straight line. In my first play through I swam there just with my Seaglide. There are, at it sounds like you're already aware, a pair of ghost leviathan spawns in the Grand Reef but that biome is massive (seriously, try driving your Seamoth around the perimeter sometime, it's really huge); the spawn points are both hundreds of metres away from the island horizontally and, critically, vertically - they're each at something like 250-300m depth!
Only one Reaper lives really close to the mountain island; the spawn point is to the North of the island so although it's not that far away and you may hear it roaring, it's quite possible to visit the island multiple times without seeing it.
The reaper which lives close to the bow of the Aurora, where the entrances are, mostly stays at the front of or just on the corner of the bow of the ship. So, again, it's more than possible to come and go from the Aurora without seeing it, although I think the majority of players would probably hear it at some point.
Remember that all these animals move, and especially, can become aggressive in response to other Subnautica critters - I watched one from the ship's stern which had initially been yelling/posturing at me divert to spend ten minutes chasing Stalkers in the creepvine forest last playthrough. They can go a long way from their usual territory if they're either chasing something or fleeing damage. So even if you look up their precise spawn point, there's no promise that they'll be there - but it's very likely that they're somewhere.
Performing a reaper check: go to the Aurora. Travel from her bow, along the shallow, safe side, around to the deeper, murkier water at the stern (back, where the engines are). As soon as you're out of the safe shallows-ish area, you're in the Crash Zone proper. Sand, twisted metal, Cyclops engine parts, loads of supply crates (fill your boots!) and… six Reaper Leviathans within a perhaps 400x300 metre area. If you can potter around the deep Crash Zone, directly behind the ship's engines, and collect I dunno say 5 supply crates without seeing a reaper… then maybe they're actually missing.
Otherwise, you just got lucky. :)
like normal fish to full scale leviathans?
Atleast 2
Sounds like a bit of a stretch

51 I believe. Not factoring in below zero to my count though.
