TL;DR
Steelcase Chairs
The Steelcase Gesture is highly praised for its ergonomic design and ability to alleviate lower back pain [1:1]. The Steelcase Leap V2 is another popular choice, especially when purchased as a refurbished model, which can make it more affordable
[1:9]
[4:5]. However, opinions vary, with some users not finding the Leap 2 comfortable despite its popularity
[3:3].
Herman Miller Chairs
Herman Miller chairs are frequently mentioned across discussions for their quality and comfort. The Mirra 2 has been a game-changer for one user, providing long-lasting comfort during extended work hours [1:2]. The Aeron chair is particularly noted for its ergonomic support and effectiveness in reducing back pain
[3:5]
[5:1]. Used Aeron chairs can be a cost-effective option without compromising on quality
[3:2].
Budget-Friendly Options
For those seeking more budget-friendly alternatives, the Staples Hyken has received positive reviews for its comfort and affordability [1:3]
[1:7]. Other economical options include the Gabrylly and Sihoo chairs, which provide good ergonomic features at a lower price point
[2:2]
[2:3].
Other Recommendations
Beyond Steelcase and Herman Miller, other brands like Haworth and OdinLake offer solid ergonomic solutions. The Haworth Zody chair is appreciated for its durability and comfort, available at a reasonable price when bought second-hand [3:4]. The OdinLake Ergo PLUS 743 is another premium option that comes with a long warranty, ensuring longevity and value
[4:1].
Considerations Beyond Discussions
When selecting an ergonomic chair, consider factors such as adjustability, lumbar support, and material durability. If possible, try sitting in different models before purchasing to ensure they meet your specific needs and preferences. Additionally, investing in a higher-quality chair can be seen as a long-term investment in your health and productivity.
herman miller mirra 2 changed my home office forever. I've had mine for about 8 years, and several bullshit fad chairs before that. I work very long hours, and the office I worked in before introduced me to the world of 24 hour chairs.
I also used a drum throne for longer than I should have..... you need a chair now.
Recommend the Staples Hyken. Went through 2-3 chairs that were uncomfortable before I found this one.
Sat in that a few weeks ago and was surprised how good a staples brand chair was. It’s on my list now.
What's your budget for a new chair?
Around $300-$400
I've heard good things about the Autonomous ErgoChair 2. I think it's around that price.
Steelcase leap v2, you can find refurbished ones in that price range
If you're in a populated area you'll have no problem finding a used Steelcase Leap V2 / Herman Miller Aeron for that price.
I use the Steelcase Gesture and it's been an absolute workhorse. No more lower sciatic back pain and looks swanky enough (with custom colours) to match your setting. Look into it!
Never hear of Steelcase. Thanks, I'll definitely have a look!
It is one of the most famous office furniture manufactures in existence and is known for high quality furniture. Herman Miller, Haworth, Allsteel, and Knoll are a few others.
Embody chair by Hermon Miller
I don’t like a standing desk but need a nice office chair for sitting in 8+ hours a day. I was thinking the branch ergonomic basic model but would love to hear other opinions
Ok I have been on the look out for a reasonably priced ergonomic chair recently. Most of them were lacking in some way (like no adjustable arms). I finally managed to find one from Gabrylly that checked all the boxes. I am pretty happy with it so far. It's been a few months.
I was looking for a chair for a while.. until I found this one. I love it!!
look into Sihoo chairs. They are quite well built and economical compared to the very high end ones. I can only speak for the SIHOO Doro C300. It's quite comfortable, and the mesh material is quite sturdy and bouncy. I would suggest that if you are a big/tall person, check out their other chairs because they have chairs specifically for tall people too.
I only post this from my personal experience.. good luck
I’ve spent way too many eight plus hour days in my chair and started on the Branch basic.
What country are you located in?
I bought the Shinoo M102 one because it was on a discount and the positive reviews. its very comfortable and I sit all day on it. Its been about 3 months now and so far no complaints. It comes with headrest too, if thats something you need as well.
To those working from home, do you use an office chair? If so, which ones do you use+suggest buying now? I've just got a remote job and want to purchase something for my home office and the first item came to my mind is getting a good chair for sitting long hours a day. So can you let me know what you're using or you want to suggest if my budget is under $1k?
Herman Miller Aeron or any products from Herman Miller and Steelcase that you can afford. For me a used Aeron is perfect.
I love my Aeron.
Back pain gone after swapping to one
I have the Steelcase leap 2. Can't stand it.... I bought it because everyone recommended it...
Steelcase is a great chair, however, it's crap if not adjusted to fit your body.
I have had it for 5 years. I have adjusted it every way possible in those years…
I’ve been using a Haworth Zody chair since like 2018? Hybrid from 2018-2021ish and fully remote since then.
MSRP is $8xx and up but you can find them under $500 with a 12 year warranty.
Aeron with the fancy lower back posture thing is worth every penny.
You’ve been looking for office chairs for a long time. Why not reference one of your other posts for recommendations?
RIP
Hi guys, I've been working from home for almost a year now. bought 3 office chair that doesn't really last. I love to lean on my chair but I noticed that I have a backpain all the time from working and sitting for 12 hours a day.
Are there any chairs that can help with posture and lessen the back pain? I used to buy chairs around $150 - $250 price range and I have tried 2nd hand ones but the same issue. I am now thinking of investing a much higher price.
Either Herman Miller or X Back.
Hey dear, office chair finding is not easy, I'll suggest the steelcase gesture
Any opinions on the Steelcase Gesture vs Leap?
Not sure if others have mentioned it, but you can get refurbed SC Leap V2s from BTOD.com for about $550. Comes with a 10 year warranty. I got one from them a month ago and it's been great so far.
I use OdinLake Ergo PLUS 743, although a bit pricey compared to your previous price range but the value I'm getting is totally worth it.
I've been using mine for the past 5 years and I haven't had to deal with back pain or replacing the chair. Besides that, the chair came with 15 year warranty which is amazing.
My buddy got one of their Ergo PRO 633 for $289 seven months ago I think... and won't stop talking about it.
Old or new, I believe it's good to invest in quality if you want good results.

Great list, I heard so many good things about Herman chain and I definitely would go with this one when I have budget for it.
Starting my first wfh job, and it's also my first time sitting in front of desks long hours instead of moving around. I have $500 to buy an ergonomic office chair, so I was eyeing a Herman Miller+Steelcase, but i want to try something more budget-friendly first.I mostly get back pain from leaning back too much, and since I game a lot, a solid chair would help a lot. Any recommendations?
I am currently seeking a high-quality ergonomic chair within a $500 budget. The Branch Ergonomic Chair Pro with a headrest has particularly caught my attention.
Just get a second hand Herman Miller Aeron in the right size for you, or the Embody if you like that better.
Herman Miller Aeron on FB marketplace
I got a used HM at $400.
Another factor we have to look at is how tall you are and if you prefer a firmer seat or something cushier.
For that $500, you can check out the Desky Pinnacle Executive Chair. It has all the stuff you want in an ergo chair with lumbar, 3D armrests, and mesh. But if you want something cheaper, I could also recommend the Desky Adjustable High Back Mesh Chair for $280. It has that standard ergonomic chair design when you look at it and also comes with a headrest.
My company is allowing us to replace our current chairs as long as it doesn’t exceed $350. Used chairs won’t be an option unfortunately due to the potential of receiving broken chairs/missing parts. I will be sitting in this chair for 8 hours a day and have a history of back issues, so lumbar support is important. Looking for a chair with a high back or head rest attachment.
EDIT: Forgot to add that the chair needs to be available to purchase within the US
I have the HON Ignition 2.0 at my home office. I don’t like it quite as much as Herman Miller Aeron at my company’s physical office, but the difference isn’t anywhere close to the $1,000+ price difference. I’ve had the HON for about a year and it feels like it will last a very long time. At the time of purchase it was around $300, but I think the price has gone up. You might be able to snag it for $350 with a sale price though.
I got a Hon ignition at the office a couple years back and it’s pretty comfortable. I think I found it on Amazon for about $200. Definitely would recommend, if you can find it for a decent price. IIRC, MSRP on that bad boy is around $600.
I have a branchfurniture.com office chair I really like. Replaced my second staples hyken in a year
I have had the Branch Ergonomic chair for two years and it’s like new. It’s really good value.
Yup this one is quite alright, had one for a few years.
Currently I have a amazon basics office chair for about $240 and it's surprisingly great. I've had it for 2.5 years or so, sitting on it daily WFH, and it's still doing well.
Between 200 and 400 you can get an excellent chair. No need to spend >1000 on some stupid brand, it's still simply a chair. And definitely avoid "gaming chairs" those things are made for looks, and not for your back. I threw my gaming chair out after 24 hours.
I'd recommend any of these for home use :
Is Ikea an option for you? I've been pretty happy with the markus office chair. The armrests are not great, but overall it's supportive, fairly comfortable, and seems very durable. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/markus-office-chair-vissle-dark-gray-90289172/
I second this, it's a surprisingly comfortable chair. It got me through 8-10 hours of daily bar exam studying
I had this for a bit and hated it, but that's because I frequently lean back to stretch and look at the ceiling while doing so, and the headrest makes this impossible. Good chair, but just something I personally found frustrating.
This chair is great, in the leather version, and im super bummed they apparently stopped selling it. The non-leather ones are fine too but the armrest pads are rubbery and firm and I can’t stand them. The leather version has padded leather armrest covers.
What did you not like about it? Just curious as I am looking for a new chair.
I’d rather do a refurb from a reputable dealer than a $300 new one. I’ve tried the Hyken, but found the aeron and steelcase leaps better.
This is the way.
Under $350 I would go the refurbished route (Herman Miller & Steelcase are great).
I work from home and spend considerable time every day sitting in front of my desk. I have been using a dining chair but I’d like to buy an actual desk chair (preferably ergonomic) that will last for a long time. Any recommendations?
Messed up backs are a lot more expensive than the most expensive desk chairs. They're worth every penny.
they may be worth every penny, but there's a lot of people that just straight up can't afford to drop $1k+ on a chair
I have not found a strong correlation between chair price and its ergonomic benefit for me. My most comfortable desk chair that causes me the least physical issues over time was a generic chair that cost me less than $200. I've worked in jobs where I've had pricy chairs like the Aeron and Mirra, and have ended up with a lot of chronic aches and pains despite proper chair adjustment by professionals. I feel like a lot of desk chairs are designed with a very specific (read: middle aged male) body type in mind, and get progressively less supportive as you adjust them away from that ideal.
But I agree it's worth taking the time and, if applicable and feasible, monetary investment, to find a chair that works for you. I'd suggest looking into those famous pricy chairs like the ones I mentioned if they're within reach (especially if you have an 'average' sized body), other desk chairs marketed as ergonomic, and also potentially gaming chairs. Go to a brick and mortar store to try them out, or order from an online retailer with a generous return policy.
Have you checked an office furniture liquidator? It's hit or miss (like all used furniture) but you can often try out a bunch of nice chair models under one roof. And even top of the line chairs are sold at a steep discount. I usually try to negotiate a better deal.
Then you’ll want to buy used. The ones worth having are expensive. I’m a Steelcase fan myself. I see them on Craigslist and the like for sub $300 if you’re patient.
I looked on craigslist for a lightly used aeron chair. I bought it from an office furniture liquidation company- got it for $300.
Bought a steelcase refurbished office chair from Crandall. Every cushion was new, new hardware. May as well have been a new chair. Half price of a new one.
Can’t recommend Crandall enough. Great company who stands by their refurbs. If you have an issue they will fix promptly
Get a used one. I see used steel case and Herman miller on Facebook for $250 and under depending on how patient and diligent at checking are you. Good options are Herman Miller Mirrra, Sayl or Aeron and steel case think or leap.
100%. Depending on where you live, many cities will have companies that buy up and resell old office furniture in bulk. So when a whole company replaces their 300 Herman miller Aerons you can go in and pick them up for a steal. Got my humanscale chair this way and it was in awesome condition.
Op, I got my Steelcase amia for $190 used and in great condition from an office liquidator.
Were also selling leap v2 for $240 and a gesture for $320
You are right, Herman Miller Aeron is the best office chair. you can also get Nouhaus Ergo3D Ergonomic Office Chair for $300 and
What do you guys recommend for a good ergonomic chair?I'm working from home so we can expect i'll sit on it 10 hours per days 5 days per week
Budget is prob 1000-1500$ CAD (NOT USD)
So ive seen that those steelcase, hermanmiller, humanscale chair are going pretty cheap when buying used, refurbished one so if some1 know a good canadian store or any store that ship them to canada feel free to share them :D
Living in Montreal
Steelcase leap V2. Almost instantly solved my back pain from crappy "ergo" chairs from office depot
Look at Crandall Office Furniture online. They refurbish chairs and actually improve them - extra padding on the leap V2 as the biggest complaint on them was seat padding was too thin. Additionally, they have a great warranty, and it's cheaper than new.
I think I paid $575 shipped, with an upgraded piston, for my leap V2 and I would do it again in a heartbeat if I needed to.
I really can't say enough good about Crandall.
I've used this chair daily for 10-14 hours a day for the last year and a half or so and it's been absolutely amazing.
Plus one for a refurbished Steelcase 462 Leap V2 from Crandall Office Furniture. I purchased two chairs from them (one for me and one as a present for my son). Both were received in excellent shape and feel great! These chairs are very well built and highly adjustable to fit your body the way you like best.
I learned about the Leaps here on Reddit so I'm just giving back as I'm very happy with my choice. The chairs are very well built and will last for many, many years.
This may not be a worthy comparison, but I have a vertagear triigger 275 and sit at my desk a ton every day. My back kills me every evening and I don't know if it's just me or the chair.
Does anyone have experience with this chair? I'm giving a lot of thought to a refurbished steelcase now but it looks pretty similar to what I have.
There's really only 2 answers to this question, Herman Miller or Steelcase, those 2 brands are the standard for high end office chairs. I've tried both and went with Steelcase because I didn't like the mesh on the HM chair and found it a bit stiff and uncomfortable.
I've tried the best ergo chairs and I like the Leap V2 the most. I bought the Herman Miller Embody full price new and the Leap V2 used for maybe 1/5th the price.
I'd suggest you try all of them before you commit to one because it's all preferential to be honest.
> I've tried the best ergo chairs and I like the Leap V2 the most.
This chair is the best. I did nearly two years of research on a good, ergonomic chair, both here and at /r/OfficeChairs
The leap V2 is comfortable enough that you can sit in it cross-legged. It's highly adjustable. I got mine from Crandall.
This is the right answer. Both are far and away better than the competition. I used a Herman Miller Aeron at my last job and then bought a Steelcase Gesture for my home office (bc it was cheaper than the HM). I'd recommend either one.
I have a steelcase series 2 and my wife has an amia. Highly recommend them as well.
Herman Miller areon. You can find them cheap at office liquidation auctions.
I have the option to work 100% remotely but I go into the office 2-3x a week simply because of this chair 😅
Picked up one not too long ago. Initially I wasn't that impressed but after using it for a while... man does it help with my everything. My butt is less sore (fat plus sitting equals sore butt), my back is less sore, I feel comfortable... it's not a luxury feeling but more of a precisely-correct amount of comfort. The only way it could be better is if it had an attachable headrest for kicking back when I'm watching a show or something.
I was debating between Steelcase leap v2 and Herman Miller Aeron, HM wouldn't accept my credit card for whatever reason so I got leap v2.
I don't regret it, my back isn't sore anymore compared to some hand me down chair. WFH for 2 years and it's one of my best investments.
best ergonomic chairs for home office
Key Considerations for Ergonomic Chairs:
Adjustability: Look for chairs with adjustable seat height, armrests, backrest angle, and lumbar support to customize the fit to your body.
Lumbar Support: A chair with good lumbar support helps maintain the natural curve of your spine, reducing the risk of back pain.
Seat Depth and Width: Ensure the seat is deep and wide enough to support your body comfortably, allowing for a few inches of space between the back of your knees and the seat edge.
Material: Choose breathable fabric or mesh for better airflow, especially if you sit for long periods. High-density foam cushions can provide comfort without losing shape.
Mobility: Consider a chair with smooth-rolling casters and a swivel base for easy movement around your workspace.
Recommendations:
Herman Miller Aeron: A classic ergonomic chair known for its excellent lumbar support, adjustability, and breathable mesh material. It's a bit pricey but highly regarded for long-term comfort.
Steelcase Leap: Offers a high level of adjustability and support, with a flexible backrest that moves with you. It's designed for all-day comfort and is well-suited for various body types.
Secretlab Titan Evo 2022: If you prefer a gaming chair style, this chair combines ergonomic features with a sleek design. It has adjustable lumbar support and a comfortable seat for extended use.
Humanscale Diffrient: A minimalist design with a mesh back that provides good support and comfort. It automatically adjusts to your body weight, making it easy to use.
