What Redditors are Saying

Most Affordable Standing Desks

TL;DR

  • Desk risers are a budget-friendly option.
  • DIY setups with separate frames and tabletops can save money.
  • FlexiSpot and Autonomous offer affordable motorized desks.

Desk Risers

For those on a tight budget, desk risers are a popular choice. They allow you to convert an existing desk into a standing desk without the need for a full replacement. Users have found them effective and easy to use, with prices starting around $40 [1:1][3:2]. These risers are also portable, making them a flexible option for different workspaces.

DIY Setups

Creating a custom setup by purchasing separate components is another cost-effective strategy. One approach involves buying an adjustable frame from brands like VIVO and pairing it with a countertop from IKEA. This method allows for customization and can result in a high-quality desk at a lower cost [2:1]. Another user shared their experience of combining a cheap standing desk base with a butcher block countertop, totaling around $250 [3:1].

Affordable Motorized Desks

Several users recommend motorized standing desks for convenience and ease of adjustment. The FlexiSpot EC1 and Autonomous SmartDesk 2 are highlighted as good value options under $500 [4:1]. FlexiSpot's E8 model, purchased during sales events, offers decent stability but may experience some monitor wobble at full height [4:2]. For those looking for stability under $300, FlexiSpot's offerings are again recommended [5:3].

Considerations for Stability

Stability is a key concern for many users, especially when working with multiple monitors or heavy equipment. While two-legged desks might be less stable, opting for models with three or four legs can provide better support, though they may exceed the $300 price range [5:1]. Ensuring that the desk has a solid build and proper weight distribution can help minimize wobbling issues.

I’ve wanted to get a standing desk for awhile, but I don’t have a ton of money. I need to sit sometimes, but I don’t want to the entire day. Any cheapish sit-stand desks?

Would second the vote on one of these risers /u/AXISMGT mentioned. I recently worked a temp gig where the whole office had these and they seemed to work well.

Has anyone found THE standing desk that's actually good value?

Posted by ZealousidealShip3215 · in r/GoodValue · 2 months ago

My back is killing me from this WFH setup and everyone keeps telling me to get a standing desk. Problem is, most of the ones I've seen are either flimsy garbage or cost way more than they should. I'm looking for something with push-button height adjustment because cranking it up and down all the time sounds exhausting and maybe some cable management.

Budget's around $300-500 - please tell me someone's found something decent in this range that actually works?

I've had an ikea motorized standing desk for quite a while now (8 years at least) and it's been great. I don't stand as much as I used to, but it's been good value so far.

I've been waiting for LumiDesk to launch - they're supposedly coming out with some footrest design and super quiet motors.

I had a thirdhand Geekdesk v1, it was used for a total of (my guess) 13 years and the motor finally gave out last month. I know it was expensive as hell when it came out lol. I replaced it with a Flexispot EN2 which I got for $160 on Amazon. I didn’t need anything huge or fancy and it was perfect for me.

Yes, bought different components and put it together myself. I bought a wood countertop from Ikea and then put it on an adjustable frame that I bought separately from VIVO. I found this to be the most cost effective way to get a large adjustable desk with decent quality materials.

Specifically I bought this frame and then this countertop. They have a few other styles you can choose from if you look at their other countertops. I would not recommend the laminate ones or the ones that are only 1 & 1/8 inch thick though, get one that is 1 and 1/2 inch thick so you can screw it in farther and it will be more stable.

Been using it for a few years now and have moved twice in that timeframe where it was disassembled and reassembled. Very easy to do, just 4 screws straight into the wood. The desk surface is HUGE and I've had no problems with the frame. I went with the dual motor variant because they are less prone to failure than the single motor ones. I use it every day and usually toggle between sitting and standing multiple times, no issues so far. Frankly I think it looks better than most of the other ones I've seen too.

Budget standing desk options?

I’ve scoured Reddit for inexpensive options for sit-stand desks and have struggled to find a consensus. Any thoughts? I’m trying to keep the purchase under $400.

If you already have a sitting desk (or table), a riser is an easy & mobile option. I think mine was €40 at an office furniture store, and my work table was €60 at Ikea.

I’ve been working from home for a while now, and my current setup is killing my back. I’ve been using a regular desk, but after hours of sitting, I feel stiff and uncomfortable. Standing desks seem like a game-changer, but the options are overwhelming

Budget-friendly ideally under $500, but willing to stretch a bit for quality

Top Brands I’ve Seen

Define "best"... it means different things to different people.

I have a Flexispot E8 - purchased during Prime Days - with 55x28 bamboo top that's in your budget. It's decent, but I can get a little monitor wobble at full height.

I also have an Uplift with 72x30 dark bamboo top (flexispot's dark bamboo is hollow core, or was when I bought it) and find t to be rock solid. I got the C-frame style, while there's nothing truly wrong with the T-frame style I felt that with three monitors and two computers and other stuff all towards the back of the desk, the C-frame puts the support closer to the center of gravity. Of course the Uplift cost twice what the Flexispot cost but much of that was the larger top.

I'd seen the Ikea at a local store and it was more wobbly than a drunk Spring Break college kid at the end of the night.

My suggestion is buy the best frame you can, even if it means going with a cheaper desktop - since you can put a new top on the frame later on.

Also consider how long you'll have this -- the conventional desk I replaced with my Uplift standing desk is one I've been using for twenty years.

For a great standing desk under $500, the FlexiSpot EC1 or Autonomous SmartDesk 2 are solid choices with motorized adjustments at affordable prices. If you're willing to stretch your budget, the Uplift Desk V2 offers top-tier quality and stability.

Most stable standing desk under $300 - desktop not required

Posted by 350HP · in r/StandingDesk · 3 months ago

Just as the title says, I am looking for the most stable standing desk under $300. I don't need anything special, standard table heights work well for me. Stability while standing or sitting is the most important concern for me. It would be great if the desktop is included in the price but not a requirement.

I had an autonomous desk about 5 years ago (they changed the model names now but it is comparable to the SmartDesk 2). It was mostly great but my monitor wobbled a little bit when I was typing while standing up. I would like to avoid that in my next desk if possible.

Any recommendations are highly appreciated.

Looking for Cheap Desk

Posted by SlowTechnology3888 · in r/StandingDesks · 1 month ago

I’m looking for a standing desk and I see a lot of options under 100, id say my budget is 150 so is there a certain desk that is the most worth it or bang for buck in this range? Or will it require me expanding my budget to get a good standing desk? In that case I think ill just look for a really cheap one on amazon or something if differences are marginal. Please lmk.

You want to first identify your needs:

  1. Manual or electric: If a workout doesn't bother you everyone time you move your desk up and down then its best to get a manual crank as they are significantly cheaper. Electric ones are more expensive but on your budget they are more prone to stop working. Something like this is good: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Sit-Stand-Workstation-Heavy-Duty-Non-Electric/dp/B0F1FCWH11?gQT=1&th=1
  2. Size: Identify what size works for you. The most average size around your budget is probably around 48x24. This can fit up to 2 24' monitors with keyboard and mouse but you will have almost no space for keeping your arms. I recommend getting a bigger size like 55x28 maybe from VIVO if you can go slightly over budget. ($10 or 20 over)
  3. Accessories: Some desks like the Flexispot en2 offers a lot of bundled accessories. If you want these, I suggest you go for the desk.

How difficult is manually cranking the desk, i wouldn’t mind if it’s not too terrible. I keep a lot of things on my desk so i would prefer a 55 inch. I’ve heard of the flexispot brand and some of their prices aren’t too bad, if i were to get one of their cheaper end electric standing desks, could i count on it to be reliable?

1 upvotes on reddit
panelhopper · 1 month ago

The cheaper ones usually cut corners on weight capacity and the durability of the motor. There are some cheap ones out there that have super high reviews, but the reviews themselves aren’t always telling the full story. A lot of brands pump up early ratings, then drop the build quality once sales take off.

If you don’t raise and lower it much, a budget motor can last a while, but heavy setups or frequent height changes will push it harder. That’s where you’ll notice the wobble or weaker parts. You could bump up the price to something around $450 and get the Desky Single Sit Stand. It’s a single motor, but it’s pretty stable and has preset heights so you’re not fiddling every time.

You are finding the best standing desks with budget under $800? Here is the list we highly recommend

iMovr Energize sit-stand desk

Pros

  • Highly customizable
  • Comes in pre-assembled
  • Ergo contoured tabletop
  • Stable and sturdy base
  • Made in the USA
  • Generous warranty period

Cons

  •  The design of the desk isn’t fancy

APEX LITE DESK 71 – a super best standing desk with huge size

Pros

  • Beautiful wooden desk
  • Sturdy legs and feet
  • Wide desk area
  • Easy setup
  • Well packaged

Cons

  • Can’t go high enough for taller people
  • The cable management system could have been better

Electric Best Standing Desk with Programmable Memory from Standupdeskstore

Pros

  • Strong and sturdy
  • Does not wobble
  • Transitions fast
  • Operates quietly

Cons

  • The cable management system could have been better

VERSA Powerlift electric standing desk

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty sit-stand desk, the Versa white desk is your bet. This simple yet functional standing desk has a weight capacity of 350 lbs. It’s heavy-duty and rather solid. And it’s one of the more heavy-duty standing desks in the market that has such high weight capacity.

The size of the desk is 48x 30, so it’s roomy enough for a two-monitor setup. It is also monitor- mount ready, so this desk is really designed to hold more motors. Needless to say, this US-made desk also has something more in store for you.

Autonomous SmartDesk Pro

This SmartDesk Pro standing desk is not for tall users. Though it has a wider height range that can go up as high as 51 inches, you’ll not be happy with how it performs at the highest deks setting.

It will start to wobble when you type. You will feel the desk shaking when you’re working on it if you use it at the desk set.

Steelcase Solo stand up desk

The desk can go as high as 48. 7 inches. So this can accommodate those who are a bit taller.
Though those who love a more functional desk will find this lacking. As mentioned above, the desk operates with a single touch or push. It uses a Linak paddle to change the desk height. So that means that this desk lacks a memory preset where you can input your favorite desk height. So this is a note to remember in case you have your eyes on the Steelcase Solo.

According to my own purchasing experience, You can just buy a single motor electric standing desk for under $300 in a famous brand in the industry while you can buy a dual-motor electric one if you buy a new brand (they have to lower the price to enter the industry). It depends on your choice. For me, I'd like to try a new brand if they offer a 30-day trial.

most affordable standing desks

Key Considerations for Affordable Standing Desks:

  1. Price Range: Look for desks under $300 for budget-friendly options. Many quality standing desks are available in this range.

  2. Adjustability: Ensure the desk has a smooth height adjustment mechanism, whether manual or electric. Electric desks are generally more convenient but may cost more.

  3. Stability: Check for a sturdy frame and a weight capacity that can support your equipment without wobbling.

  4. Surface Area: Consider the size of the desk to ensure it fits your workspace and can accommodate your computer, monitor, and any other essentials.

  5. Ease of Assembly: Look for desks that are easy to assemble, with clear instructions and minimal tools required.

Recommendations:

  • Flexispot E7: This desk offers a good balance of quality and affordability, often priced around $250. It has a sturdy frame, electric height adjustment, and a weight capacity of up to 355 lbs.

  • Vari Electric Standing Desk: Typically priced around $295, it features a solid build, easy assembly, and a spacious work surface.

  • SHW Electric Height Adjustable Computer Desk: A budget-friendly option usually priced under $200. It has a simple design and electric height adjustment, making it a great entry-level choice.

  • Uplift V2 (Base Only): If you're looking for a customizable option, consider the base of the Uplift V2, which allows you to choose your own desktop material and size. The base starts around $599, but you can often find discounts.

Choosing a standing desk that fits your budget while meeting your needs for stability, adjustability, and surface area will enhance your workspace ergonomics and comfort.
