What Redditors are Saying

Best Flea and Tick Prevention for Cats

TL;DR Revolution Plus is widely recommended for comprehensive protection against fleas, ticks, and other parasites. It requires a prescription but offers broad-spectrum coverage including heartworm prevention [2:1], [5:2].

Prescription vs. Over-the-Counter Options

The consensus among cat owners is that prescription flea treatments are generally safer and more effective than over-the-counter (OTC) options. Revolution Plus is frequently mentioned as the gold standard in veterinary flea prevention due to its ability to protect against multiple parasites, including fleas, ticks, ear mites, and heartworms [1:3], [5:9]. Some users have opted for "Revolt," a generic version of Revolution, which is cheaper but still requires a vet's prescription [1:1], [5:3].

Effectiveness Against Resistant Fleas

Several users reported issues with OTC products like Frontline, which may be less effective in areas where fleas have developed resistance [3:3], [3:6]. Prescription medications like Revolution Plus and Bravecto were highlighted as successful alternatives, even in cases of resistant flea populations [3:4], [3:5].

Comprehensive Parasite Protection

Revolution Plus not only targets fleas and ticks but also provides protection against roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms, making it a versatile choice for overall parasite prevention [2:2], [5:4]. This is particularly important for cats who might be exposed to various parasites, either through outdoor activities or interactions with other animals.

Safety Considerations

Safety is a crucial factor when choosing flea prevention, especially since some OTC treatments can cause adverse reactions in cats. Users have shared experiences of skin irritation and hair loss with certain products, emphasizing the importance of consulting a veterinarian before selecting a flea treatment [1:6], [5:8]. Prescription medications like Revolution are generally considered safer and are often recommended by vets [5:9].

Additional Recommendations

For those looking for alternative options, Advantage Multi was mentioned for its additional heartworm preventative capabilities [4:1]. Nexgard Combo was another option suggested by users [4:3]. It's advisable to discuss these options with your vet to determine the best fit for your cat's specific needs.

I've had Oliver for two months now, and it's time to reorder his flea/tick prevention, and I'm confused. The shelter sent us home with a two-dose package of Advantage II, but I'm seeing all these other options that seem to offer more comprehensive protection, and WOW, the price jumps. What caught my eye was the protection from internal parasites, which doesn't seem to be an option from the OTC brands. I think my FIV+ baby should probably have that?

Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome and appreciated. Thank you! ~G and Oliver

Prescription is safer. Was the cat dewormed at the shelter? Periodic parasite prevention is good but it’s not necessary every month if the cat doesn’t go outside. If the cat was already given 2-3 rounds of dewormer its less of an issue

He was, and I took him to a Vet within the first week for an initial checkup. He had such heartbreaking diarrhea when I brought him home, so the Vet did stool samples, which came back negative for worms or "other" parasites. We did rounds of anti-diarrheal meds, which did absolutely nothing for him. The suggestions I got from this site for FortiFlora and pumpkin baby food set him straight, and he's been fine ever since. Thank goodness for this sub!!!

We take walks together during the day, and he loves it. He jumps up and dances around when I grab his harness! He's 100% supervised, and I don't let him out alone. So, yes and no? He gets outdoor air and exposure, but isn't an "outdoor" cat. That's why I was wondering about parasite prevention since he is FIV+.

2 upvotes on reddit
G
guesswho502 · 3 months ago

I would not worry about parasites for him. He’s not being exposed to parasites on your walks, it’s more like if he eats things like birds and mice. The FIV doesn’t make him any more or less susceptible to parasites, it just means he may have a more negative outcome if he did get them. Personally I like to give a round of Revolution maybe twice a year to my completely indoor cat, the main reason is that sometimes parasites can be missed on stool samples and I like to just make sure there’s nothing going on. But it’s not necessary for me to give it to him at all. It sounds like parasites were not the cause of your cat’s diarrhea, so it’s a non-concern outside of routine medical care. That said, please look into bird flu as that’s probably the biggest thing to worry about right now with a cat that goes outside

Being on the preventatives every month long term can be harmful as well, so if it’s not necessary to give them definitely don’t overmedicate him. This is also something to ask your vet about so you are on the same page about what’s important to his health

I give my cats revolution. You have to have a prescription for it. But you can get it cheaper at Costco.

I was eyeballing that one too, but I think the other poster is right. I'll talk to his Vet on Monday and get a recommendation. Which will naturally be the most expensive. ;p

Yeah, if you want Revolution, you’ll have to speak to your vet. My FIV cat needs the extra protection that’s not just for fleas (because flea meds protect against more than fleas!).

OTC flea treatments can poison cats if an improper dose is given, and I have heard of some products that are especially bad. Please speak with your vet about effectiveness and cost rather than risk an OTC product. https://www.medvet.com/know-flea-product-toxicity-dogs-cats/

Seconding Revolution. I get “Revolt” from Chewy. It’s the “off brand” that’s a bit cheaper.

I tried all the Advantages and Frontline and nothing worked. My boy is kinda itchy/allergy prone and giving him the better protection has helped!

I have to say that I think it does smell rather strong. 😓

I put it on and try to keep him a bit distracted so he doesn’t shake or roll around. My FIV- girl is super toy motivated so I get out “the super secret most coveted toy” (I only bring this out for flea treatment time), and play with her with that. She hardly notices when I put it on and then we play until it’s dried a bit. She goes crazy for this toy so it’s a great distraction. lol.

She cries when I put the toy up and runs around the house looking for it. 🥺 She’s such a playful girl.

Revolution (Salemectin & Sarolaner). Prevents roundworms, as well. Expensive, but worth every penny.

The most effective ones are all prescription only- talk to your vet about the ones that work best in your area. Specific areas sometimes have brand resistant fleas or special considerations.

Please help! My cat is suffering from fleas so bad all of a sudden. I have bought the expensive stuff ($50 frontline), I have bought the cheap stuff, and everything in between and I can't find a brand that actually works! We got some mutant fleas over here. What brands do people have luck with? Thanks so much for your help!

Revolution Plus. It’s very expensive but i think it’s the only thing that kills the fleas + eggs for a whole month (breaking the cycle, it also kills the fleas in the house since they end up starving)

I use it on my two cats and it’s great. It also kills ear mites and most worm except tape. Tapeworms happen bc fleas tho, so if you put this first and then address tape, you’re all set.

Frontline doesn't work here, the fleas adapted.

Senergy is very good for tough infestations. Revolution also works. My kitties seemed to be less bothered by the application of senergy vs revolution.

I tried a somewhat newer medication on the market, Bravecto, and had incredible results. Fleas were jumping off our pets within 30 minutes. The problem was completely solved with one chewable tablet.

I ordered it online and just needed to provide vet info for the prescription.

Capstar will kill all of the fleas currently on your cat very quickly and then Revolution Plus to control the fleas. Kilauea Vet clinic in Keaau will sell you prescription flea medication without requiring an exam. It’s where I go to buy my dogs flea medication (Simparica Trio, which can’t be used for cats)

I go to my vet, and they prescribed revolt. It's the generic version of revolution, and it's pretty cheap considering the store version is $40-$60

You just put it between their shoulder blades and remember to keep up on it. My cat had a horrible time with fleas, and when the vet put this on him, they all just started dying 🤷‍♀️ wayyyyyyy more effective than the baths or tooicals I was buying from the store. I wish I had started with this.

We use Advantage Multi because it also has heartworm preventative.

We live where mosquitos are an issue all the year and my cats have access to a catio.

Cats do not have an approved HW treatment so if they get it there is nothing you can do. I want to protect them from as much as possible.

I tried advecta and it did not work! Later my boyfriend said he saw cats have seizures from that specific brand. I will not be buying or using that again.

I want to try pet armor since it’s less expensive than frontline. It seems everything about them is pretty equivalent. There’s also advantage which seems like its up there with frontline plus. Any thoughts?

I use Revolution+. It’s what my vet recommends and also covers heart worm and ear mites. There is no treatment for heart worm in cats.

It’s actually cheaper to buy it at my vet than it is online. I don’t know how that works, but check with your vet. You’ll need a prescription anyways.

Also protects against roundworms & hookworms too! This is what my vet prescribed my cat as well. He likely doesn't need it because he's indoor only, but I just feel better knowing that if either my fiancé or I brought something home after being around other cats, he's protected :)

I got a big discount on a 6 month order from chewy when there was a deal going on, which I had to ask my vet to write a prescription for. But once that 6 months was up I just set up the monthly auto ship order through VCA, the vet we go to, so I don't have to keep asking for a "bulk" prescription. It's about $22 a month, which is fine with me for the convenience of it

I use "revolt" which is Revolution but the off brand. My vet prescribes it since it's cheaper and my cats have been flea free ever since we started to use it. They said "You don't even have to bathe them, just keep up on re-applying this every month"

We had the worse bout of fleas I've ever had. It didn't matter what I did, they just multiplied so I took my cat to the vet and he said "Revolt and keep up on cleaning, especially laundry and vacuuming" So we did.

Revolution plus vs. Bravecto for cats flea and tick prevention

[Pic for attention] I had a friend recommend these two brands of topical flea treatments. I wanted to ask here if anyone had a preference between these two or additional recommendations. I have a cat who likes to spend a lot of time chasing lizards on screened in porch in my backyard (pic of cat on said porch). I live right up against a protected forest and my dog goes out in the yard so I wanna protect him from fleas during the summer. Has anyone had luck with Bravecto or Revolution Plus for flea and tick prevention. They seem about equal in price. $135-140 for a 6 month supply, is that normal? First time cat owner but he’s almost a year old.

Both work well in my experience since they're prescription grade. $140 for a 6 month supply is an insanely good price, that comes out to $23 a month?! One dose of Bravecto (good for 2 months) typically costs $60-$70 in my area.

I do recommend cats should be on prevention year round. Heartworms are a very real risk and a silent killer in cats.

I have a 5-year-old male cat (long-haired, neutered) he’s strictly indoor but I live in a multicat household, and my sister’s cats are outdoor/indoor. They get recurrent flea infections and it spreads to my cat by default I bathe him with Dawn dish soap but they keep coming back, and I want to buy some flea prevention meds for him and my sister’s cats but every other review I see for popular choices like Advantage II, Capstar, frontline, etc…, is something along the lines of, "[insert brand] killed my cat! It's not safe!" and now I have no idea what to do, I'm scared to use anything.

Revolution Plus. Only vets sell it but it is better than any store bought prevention.

I don’t think it is normal for your animal to get fleas like that even on the weak stuff, your cat is getting expose often somehow. You should look into that

You'll also find the "this killed my cat" for what I've always used, but the Seresto collars have been what I use for my cats. Long lasting, sturdy, and they've been effective. But they also weren't constantly exposed - they just get fleas once in a blue moon randomly.

I have been using Serestro collars for years on most cats, it helps with fleas and ticks.

My dad uses them on their dogs too and don't have issues anymore with fleas or ticks.

Only one cat I've ever had reacted to the collar, but it's quick to notice and removal heals up the area. Just basically became a skin irritation. For her I'll use advantage.

best flea and tick prevention for cats

Key Considerations for Flea and Tick Prevention for Cats:

  1. Type of Product:

    • Topical Treatments: These are applied directly to the skin and provide long-lasting protection (e.g., Frontline Plus, Advantage II).
    • Oral Medications: These are given as pills or chews and can be very effective (e.g., Comfortis, Bravecto).
    • Collars: Flea collars can provide ongoing protection but may not be as effective for severe infestations (e.g., Seresto Collar).
  2. Safety: Ensure the product is specifically formulated for cats, as some dog products can be toxic to felines. Always check for age and weight restrictions.

  3. Duration of Effectiveness: Look for products that offer protection for at least a month. Some oral medications can provide protection for up to three months.

  4. Ease of Use: Consider how easy the product is to apply or administer. Topicals may require careful application, while oral medications can be easier for some pet owners.

  5. Veterinarian Recommendations: Consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations based on your cat's health, lifestyle, and any specific sensitivities.

Recommendations:

  • Frontline Plus: A highly regarded topical treatment that kills fleas, ticks, and lice, providing protection for up to 30 days.
  • Bravecto: An oral chew that offers up to 12 weeks of protection against fleas and ticks, making it a convenient option.
  • Seresto Collar: Provides up to 8 months of continuous protection and is a good option for long-term prevention.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and consult your vet for the best choice tailored to your cat's needs.
