TL;DR
Age and Size Considerations
For puppies, age and size are crucial factors when choosing flea and tick prevention. Many treatments can be started at 8 weeks old, such as Revolution [1:2]. For very small puppies, like those under 3 lbs, products such as Simparica Trio have specific doses for dogs under 5 lbs
[3:2]. Always consult with a vet to ensure the dosage is appropriate for your puppy's age and weight
[3:1].
Popular Products
Several products are frequently recommended by pet owners and vets. Simparica Trio is praised for its comprehensive protection against fleas, ticks, and heartworms and is easy to administer as a monthly chewable [1:6],
[2:7],
[4:5]. Nexgard Spectra is another popular choice, offering all-in-one protection and being well-received by pets due to its palatable form
[2:1],
[4:1]. Bravecto offers a longer-lasting option with doses that last up to three months
[1:8],
[2:2].
Consulting Your Vet
The consensus across discussions is to consult your vet before starting any flea and tick prevention regimen. Vets can provide recommendations based on your geographical location, as resistance to certain treatments can vary [2:10],
[4:2]. They can also advise on the best product for your puppy’s breed and health status
[2:4].
Topical vs. Oral Treatments
There is a distinction between topical and oral treatments. Topicals like Frontline Gold repel fleas before they bite, while oral medications typically kill them after biting [5:1]. Some prefer oral treatments for their ease of use and effectiveness in preventing Lyme disease, but it’s essential to weigh these options based on your puppy’s lifestyle and exposure risks
[4:4].
Additional Tips
Consider additional preventive measures like spreading food-grade diatomaceous earth in areas where your puppy rests to help manage flea infestations [5:1]. Regular checks after outdoor activities can also help catch ticks early
[4:2].
also, should i be getting one for smaller dogs since he’s a puppy? first puppy so i’m sorry if these are ridiculous questions. any and all advice appreciated, thanks everyone! :)
Simparica Trio is an monthly oral tablet that offers full coverage. There’s a lot of good products though, with most being prescription. You cannot get heartworm prevention over the counter, and the topical flea/tick options are not nearly as effective.
thanks so much!! can i use the trio on a puppy??
Yes, 8 weeks and older! Other options like Revolution can be given 6-8 weeks old.
I think you have to wait until they are at least 8 weeks to use any kind of medication. Just bathe them with dawn soap.
Edit: Dawn dish soap not dove
i am actually! i have to wait until the 20th because that’s when he turns 8 weeks. i have a burt’s bees puppy shampoo and conditioner as far as that goes, but i was more curious about flea prevention such as frontline and others similar. however, should i start using dove soap before using the burt’s bees?
Yeah it would wash out any eggs and living ones in the meantime. Dilute it 50/50 with water.
Most vets have some kind of wormer and flea treatment plan you can subscribe to. Ours is a single oral monthly treatment which does most worms, fleas, and ticks. It's called spectra nexgard but I would just check what subscription type thing your vet has.
All our fur babies are on Simparica trio and we have never had any issues at all. You give it once a month.
Bravecto is what I use. It lasts 3 month per direction for use. I give it 2 times a year (march & Juli), it works up to 5-6 month for real. No need here in the winter month.
Our puppy is about 8-9 weeks old.
I’d like to get her started on flea/tick prevention
What do you all recommend for a dog that young? Or should I wait a few weeks?
Thanks!
Simparica Trio for a young puppy - it’s monthly, which is best for when you have a growing dog that will quickly outgrow the weight categories of 3 month products like Bravecto.
Source: VT graduate and currently have my own puppy on it!
FYI - bravecto has a monthly dose for puppies - it's what our vet gave us for our first dose.
Can confirm this stuff is great. I didn't use it at first; my pup didn't leave our property much before his final vaccines. But one of the first times he did, he brought home fleas from the long grass on the side of the road. The vet gave us this, and I never saw another flea.
Agree 100%! Simparica Trio covers fleas, ticks, and heartworms all in one. It’s easy to administer without greasy oils, and my dogs both think it’s another yummy treat! I’ve also had MULTIPLE ticks present on hikes, but not a single one latched on to my dog. Me, on the other hand…
My pup is also on this and it works well for him. No fleas or ticks, I can't check for heartworm so I'm assuming he's clear of that too.
Our 8 month old is on this. Our vet provided the prescription and we get it through chewy as it’s the cheapest route.
We’re using nexguard and heartguard since our pup was 3 months old but absolutely get the vet’s recommendation since like others are saying, your dogs health and breed may require different recommendations. I used to use the saresto for my other dog and she did great with it but with our new puppy hes so fluffy that ticks and fleas are so attracted to him it’s ridiculous. I think we’ll have to stick with nexguard for him.
The breeder should already have been worming the pup on a certain date so you would then be worming/flea protecting a month after that date. I would definitely go with prescribed meds over otc, my vet started my pup on Advocate which covers everything except tapeworm and is easy to administer, and I had Droncit to cover tapeworms and that’s his full coverage.
Get your vet to recommend something, certain meds work better in different locations. Plus too high a dose that young could be dangerous.
That was my concern. We’re taking her to the vet in two week for her second round of shots. I’ll check then.
This is the only real answer. People on the internet could suggest things that won't work all day long with the best intentions.
I didn't give the "location" thing much thought until I moved about 3 hours away and suddenly my dog had BAD FLEAS, which she then gave to my cat. Turns out, the local fleas were immune to the frontline that my dog had been on since she was young.
My vet put my puppy on nextguard spectra from 8 weeks to the fall. Half the year they are on nextguard spectra and half the year on nextguard.
Just wondering if anyone knows of flea and tick prevention for young/small poms. I have a pup that is 11 weeks and under 3 lbs still and I was just curious if there are any products out there or if we have to continue to wait until she is big enough. We see the vet next week but I’m getting anxious. We are in upstate ny with a lot of ticks. Being unprotected is making me nervous!
My little guy was a little over 2 lbs when our vet recommended we start him on Simparica Trio. My pup is still under 5 lbs and is a little over 1.5 y/o and we haven’t had any issues with it. This particular brand makes a dose specifically for dogs under 5 lbs and it protects them from fleas, ticks, and heartworm.
We have been using the puppy/kitten (for animals under 5lbs) version of topical revolution on my 4lb adult pom since she was a puppy. Currently we are using the generic versions of topical revolution called selarid and revolt and they both work just as well for half the price. Unfortunately it won’t protect against ticks but it will protect against heart worm and fleas
Definitely reach out to your vet for this. Ive heard a lot of horror stories about puppies being seriously harmed by otc flea and tick prevention
Hey I have a pup that is 9 months (male) that loves to be outside. He are using hartz flea and tick protection to keep (mostly ticks) off him but today I took him to work. And tonight after he slept the whole afternoon after his bath we were cuddling and while stroking his fur a felt a hard bump. Dad took it off. But we live somewhere that ticks are a every day risk. Any recommendations? I really don't want him to get sick or hurt.
I would discuss flea and tick prevention with your vet.
We use simparica.
The reason I suggest talking to your vet is that some preventatives will work better than others dependent on your geographical location. In some places fleas have built a resistance to specific treatments. Your vet may have a pulse on what your area is experiencing.
Even with preventative, after being out in the sticks or brush, it's good to get tick checks in habit.
We've been using the Nexgard Spectra chewables after a chat with our vet. Love that I don't really have to worry about fleas/ticks/worms, only have to remember giving him a chew once a month (just set a recurrent monthly reminder in my phone) :)
Yes I second nexgard spectra! I use it for both our dogs.
I’m using Nexguard Spectra as well for our 9m puppy. She’s a free spirit and curious, so I’m very glad it’s such an all in one medication.
I’m using Nexgard with my new puppy. First time using a chewable, and I was hesitant bc they don’t necessarily kill ticks before they bite your dog (vs topicals) but it’s FDA-approved to prevent Lyme disease—I think it’s the only chewable that is. We also did the Lyme vaccine. Hadn’t done it with my past dogs, but apparently the ticks are really bad here (Philly) this year and I found a few on both of us the first time we took her hiking.
>I think it’s the only chewable that is
It's not the only one anymore. There's at least one other now, maybe more.. Simparica trio is one. Nexgard was the only one back in 2018 but things have advanced since then.
We use simparica trio. I take our pup for walks in the woods daily, and while I will see ticks on her occasionally, they never latch on.
I also use simparica trio mostly for the heart worm protection but the fact that it’s a flea and tick prevention as well was a huge plus. My girl has been on it since February with no issues.
Do you use the chewable onces or the application ones?
Chewable once a month. It's a prescription from the vet
Also recommend this. Friend and I took our dogs to a hiking weekend in the blue ridges in summer (read: ticks lots of ticks). Her boxer was unprotected (🤦♀️) and we pulled several ticks off of her after a 1-hr hike in fairly short grasses. My husky/Shep mix mutt thing with medium length hair who gets into all the grasses had nothing on her and I checked 3 extra times after pulling ticks off of boxer. My friend started simparica for her boxer directly after getting home 👍
came here to recommend simparica trio! my puppy is very picky, and chews it up with no issue.
Hello! Sorry if this doesn’t belong here but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a flea and tick preventative. I think my 11 month puppy has fleas (she wasn’t on any preventative before). Vet previously recommended frontline and k9 advantix for flea prevention but do those also kill the fleas as well?
The Nexguard chew working amazing. My vet recommends it and the nice thing is it’s tasty to the dog and a one and done monthly. It’s prescription only so you have to have your vet OK it, but you can auto ship from Chewy which is nice
my dog takes credelio with a prescription from the vet. it's best to see the vet and take whatever they prescribe for your dog! some medications work better in some areas than others. for example, one medication may work better in the south than it would in the colder states.
My puppy is the first one I've ever had with fleas, maybe because he roots around in the weeds so much and has a different kind of coat than my other dogs. I told the vet I wanted something that wouldn't just kill them when they bit (which is what the oral flea meds do), but that would repel the damn things before it got that far. So she gave me Frontline Gold, which is one of the topical applications. It worked for us.
I also spread some diatomaceous earth (food grade) inside dog beds.
I have a 5 and a half month old puppy and I was wondering does anyone know good flea and tick protection stuff? Our vet said flea collars do nothing after a few days even if the box says it lasts for a few months :/
And I’m afraid of falling for a scam if I listen to an ad blindly
Edit: I wanna mention I live in New York at the moment!
Please avoid flea/tick collars. Most of them just don't work, and the Seresto one has been liked to medical issues. I don't have a link handy, but it was a big deal a month or two ago.
My vet started our pups on Nexgard at 6 months, but we use Credelio now just because they actually enjoy eating them.
See if your vet has a pet club or similar, where you pay a little each month like a subscription and you can get flea and tick treatment whenever you need plus other bonuses :)
I have my dog on one, called Healthy pet club :)
I have used Nexgard and Bravecto for my dog, they are both chewable tablets. I'm surprised your vet didn't give you much more guidance, as flea and tick treatment can vary depending on where you live - sometimes the fleas/ticks become resistant to certain preventatives so your vet should know best what treatment to recommend.
The topicals like you were given are usually cheaper, I pay about $150 for 6 months of Nexgard. So that will also be a factor in your decision.
Seresto collars also work well, if you get them from a reputable retailer. A lot of the criticism coming out against them have been from counterfeit products, which are rampant with the Seresto collar specifically because they are not cheap and they are known to be super effective, so there is a high demand. Buy them from a vet or a pet supply store, not online, and you should be fine
We use simparica trio and order from chewy.com
Food grade Diatomaceous Earth because it is all natural. I would avoid chemicals for the most part especially the first couple of years. Just be careful to handle it gently otherwise it can create a lot of dust that the puppy shouldn't inhale..I also use it on the carpet a few times a year and on and under my mattress. It definitely works!
If yes, which kind?
If no, why?
Our vet put our pup on Simparica Trio. It’s expensive, but it also prevents heartworm so I don’t have to buy a separate pill for that.
My pup is also on simparico trio and has been since he was 4 months old. The vet recommended it. No issues and haven’t pulled many ticks off of him- and if I do, they’re usually dead.
I’ve been using simpatico trio since she was a few months old. It’s been great so far. Easy to take and I just mark it on the calendar to remind me to give to my puppy
My vet recommended this for my two, after they turn 6 months old I think.
Ours is on Simparica trio! Great because it’s flea, tick, and heartworm.
Has your pup had any reactions to it??
Nexguard Spectra
Has your pup ever had a reaction? This is my vet recommended as well, gathering reviews before I decide...
Hi! That was something I was also worried about, but no he has not. I give him the chewable option and there have been no side effects! We’ve had our pup for 2 months so he has only been given Nexguard twice so far. I hope this helps :)
i second this! i got it from a website that has pet medication discounted. it’s flea/tick/heartworm combined
This is definitely something to consult with your vet on. The wiki also has a number of resources, as does r/AskVet.
Even if your puppy is on preventatives, I highly recommend doing tick checks after hikes and outdoors woodsy/field excursions; the ticks will die after biting your dog if they're on an oral preventative, but they can still hitch a ride on your dog and climb on over to you. I've had to pull 10-20 ticks off of my puppy from hikes, who's on preventatives. We've since added in a topical treatment as well, in advisement with our vet.
And just some general tips, I'd recommend desensitizing your puppy to tick checks before you need to. Armpits and groin are the two big areas that aren't natural for your puppy to be used to you digging around in. They make tick removal devices that are very useful for ensuring you get the whole thing, and we keep those next to kits with ziploc bags, small squirt bottles of alcohol, and a sharpie in case it's a live one--write the date on the bag, a little bit of alcohol in the bag, and tick goes in the bag and sealed for keeping for a few weeks. If any sort of weirdness develops around the bite, the tick is ready to be sent off for testing. These are also good human tick bite tips, FWIW. We keep the kits right next to natural cuddle places as well as the car and near the outside the house, since that's where we tend to find the ticks when we're giving belly rubs, feel a bump, and want her to stay in that calm position so we don't freak her out and lose it.
I don't even know how I'd know if there was one with how much fur he has. I did a topical before we went camping, but thankfully haven't had any issues.
Simparico Trio. Fleas, ticks, worms.
I live on 12 acres of rural land where fleas and ticks are abundant and they've never had fleas. When ticks get on them in their daily adventures, and in the off chance I don't find them and pick them off myself, the medication kills them. They've never had Lyme disease.
My only complaint about the tablet is, it's supposed to be a chewable but my dogs hate them and treat them like most human children treat taking their meds. I have to chop it up real fine and put it in their meals. Slight inconvenience, but the peace of mind is worth it!
It's hilarious how they get wise to the chewable tablet being medication. The lengths I've gone to get my dog to take his medicine. I've had to resort to covering the tablet in beef tallow.
I really hope mine doesnt do this but I doubt he will. Hes very very treat motivated. Makes giving him pils fairly easy too i just wrap it in lunch meat
Try cream cheese for meds it’s my secret weapon.
"I thought it was a meat-Smartie. Boy was I wrong!" - Thor 😂
I put a little peanut butter on it and our dogs gobble it up lol
Next Guard Plus. Heartworm and Flea/Tick in one.
I second this one. I use it for my pup.
Same for my boy. He’s 8 & we’ve never had any issues.
Simparica monthly tablets
Can anyone recommend a very solid flea and tick medication for a 9 week old pup?
Thanks!
Simparica Trio. It's fleas/ticks, worms (round, hook, ect) , and heartworms. It's like $30 a month and you need to get it from your vet, but it's worth it for sure. Heartworm preventative is important!
Thanks!!
I’m freaking out now because my four month old puppy has a tick even though we went to the vet two weeks ago to put the liquid that prevents those behind his head. I’m going to get it removed tomorrow but idk if I should start giving him pills instead? (I have another dog and he takes pills only - never has any ticks while taking the pill monthly also he is outside dog and is way more prone to ticks than my inside puppy)
any suggestions would be appreciated<3
The liquid doesn’t work anymore I think ticks have built immunity to it. I’ve had great luck using the oral pill from the vet! It’s about $100 but it lasts for the entire warm season here in the southeast, definitely worth it for the peace of mind alone
Flea & Tick solution does not stop them getting onto your dog. It seeps into the skin and kills them when they bite. You can get tick removal tools from Amazon, they are very cheap. Remove the ticks as soon as you find them but don't let people wind you up with tales of woe. As long as you are up to date with your prevention then it is not the end of the world.. the dog will be safe and the ticks will die, just take them off when you find them.
Edit. Spelling
The pills are more effective and last longer. It's what farmers use for their dogs too, bravecto is the pill we get prescribed and it also deals with mites
I would remove that ASAP myself, the longer it’s in the higher chance of it transmitting a disease. Watch a YT video on removal if you’re uncomfortable. You can’t wait.
edit: Also I do pills, no issue. Started them right after my lab had a tick on her face, nothing since.
My dog once got one in his eyelid and as i was new to dogs i panicked and he wouldn’t let me get it so i took him to the vet down the road and standing at reception he looked at me then the vet and let me get it lol. He’s a div!
Makes my stomach turn 🤢
Get that tick of your dog plz. Be aware of tick-borne illness. I live in an area where deer ticks are common. My cocker was fully paralyzed for several hours after an imbedded tick.
My elder Chihuahua had a deer tick on her backside and her tail was paralyzed for two days even though I got it out ASAP I even put flea and tick drops on her a few days before that-when I got it out, it didn’t even move and I presumed it was dead already probably because after it got its head in, it got hit with the drops and killed it, thank God! It’s amazing how such a little bug can be such a big threat overall
Popping pills scares the ticks off the dogs, obviously
It’s only important that you know his drug usage has helped rid his dog of ectoparasitism.
lmao
lmao
The prevention does not stop the parasites from attaching. It kills them once attached.
I've pulled off many dead ticks from my dogs all the time on hikes. I try to brush him off before we go into the car as well to catch them before they attach.
flea and tick prevention for puppies
Key Considerations for Flea and Tick Prevention in Puppies:
Age and Weight: Ensure the prevention method is suitable for your puppy's age and weight. Many products are not safe for puppies under a certain age (often 8 weeks).
Types of Products:
Environment: Treat your home and yard to eliminate fleas and ticks. Regular vacuuming, washing bedding, and using yard treatments can help reduce infestations.
Consult Your Veterinarian: Always consult your vet before starting any flea and tick prevention regimen. They can recommend the best products based on your puppy's health, breed, and lifestyle.
Recommendation: For puppies, a popular choice is Frontline Plus for topical treatment, as it is safe for puppies over 8 weeks old and provides effective protection against fleas and ticks. If you prefer oral options, NexGard is also safe for puppies over 8 weeks and offers convenient monthly dosing.
