TL;DR
Recommended Starter Weapons
The Siegebreaker is frequently mentioned as one of the best starter weapons for beginners due to its versatility and effectiveness throughout the game [1:1],
[1:5]. The Xenon Bow is also recommended, especially for newer players who prefer a weapon that's effective even without specific hero perks
[1:3],
[1:6].
Fun and Effective Weapons
While some players look for fun rather than purely effective weapons, options like the Lead Sled and Dragoon shotgun offer enjoyable gameplay with unique mechanics [2:1],
[2:4]. These weapons may not be the most powerful but provide a fun experience with their knockback effects and rapid reload speeds
[2:8].
Early Game Weapon Acquisition
For those new to the game, acquiring weapons quickly is essential. Short blunts like hammers and wrenches are suggested for their durability and ease of use [3:1],
[3:2]. Spears are also noted for being strong and easy to craft, though they break easily
[3:5].
General Tips for Beginners
Beginners should focus on weapons that are easy to handle and have straightforward mechanics. The Bloodhound Fang was mentioned in another discussion as a good weapon for first-timers due to its strength and ability to carry players through much of the game [4:2]. Additionally, leveling up vigor and endurance can be more beneficial than focusing solely on damage stats
[4:1].
By starting with these recommended weapons and strategies, beginners can enjoy a smoother entry into Fortnite's gameplay while gradually expanding their arsenal as they become more experienced.
i just started today and i wanna know what i should be crafting and what i shouldn’t be
Do abit of ventures for the weapon research voucher and get the xenon bow 👍
Xenon is an endgame weapon, enjoy all the other weapons that become too weak in the late game, watch out for mission alerts that give base game schematics for just playing the game. Boombox set weapons that you'll get for tickets atm are also fun to play.
op shouldnt get xenon with a voucher cause it can be found in normal llamers
Late reply but for a new person it's probably gonna take a few weeks of waiting for it ( the llama with xenon ) and xenon is especially good for newer people
It's not the best definitely but even without Farrah it's just a good weapon if you want to play lazy lol
And you need the hero’s for it before it’s op
hey, do you at what venture level you receive the voucher?
Siegebreaker one of the best starter weapons and legendary version is easy to get this weapon can carry u from start even to end game if u perk it good
I think the same. I had used the Siegebreaker A LOT, till I got the taste for the xenom box.
Im still using siege hah its really good but also i got Xenon bow wirh max lvl perks and charged from random stranger with rick skin and this bow is really amazing and im thinking about getting it
Siege breaker, husk buster, thrasher, thumper, bazooka, ground pounder, razorblade, stampede all good weapons
I have a 400 round terminator that I ran pretty much all the way through till Canny. Nothing lives when you have 400 rounds in your hand.
Find a rich kid and get free 130’s (weapon grade)
I want some fun weapons to try out, like not necessarily good cause I already know what’s good and have used them, I want weapons that seem rubbish but are fun, something like the viper I tried out recently.
Fortnite db link doesn’t work so search me up on there I’m Turtledude100_
You can see what I have just so you don’t recommend stuff I don’t have, look at schematics. Also you can recommend base game or expansion stuff cause it’s probably in my collection book
I think the v6 launcher comes perfectly perked so you can try that. Fun weapon with sparkle headhunter and demo. Next one would be cocoa pistol with 6th perk exploding enemies. Shoot enemies in an enclosed box. Space invader is the same. Also shotguns like maverick pierce bubble shields for some reason
The space invader seems really cool yeah ok I’ll try that
The shotgun Dragoon is pretty enjoyable with triple reload speed, not necessarily a ton of damage but all the knockback is a lot of fun especially that quickly
I was considering that one when I saw it thanks
I second that with an exception.
Have 1 reload and 2x magazine size.
You're gonna shoot 12 firecrackers and reload will be 1.5 sec, interruptible.
Use it against nature trash.
This was my first all legendary gun.
3x Impact contender. I use it in 160 missions.... don’t kill much but I send anything and everything on a ride to the moon lmao.
Definitely a favourite of mine for knocking things into jails or pits, etc
That was my favorite against the chrome husks this last time, just knock them all over place
A dragoon with as much reload speed as you can put on it. Any other double-barrel should work, but preferably the dragoon.
I love the maverick and the big shot, so it would be nice to try one of them larger spread double barrels
Yeah, I like using large spread double-barrel shotguns with good reload speed, it’s so funny to see large groups of husks get knocked on their asses
The Lead Sled is my go to weapon for fun
I'm still really new to the game. Most I've ever survived so far is 9 days.
I do use a starter kit. So I've mainly used a baseball bat, upgraded to spiked Bat whenever possible.
But I've found that the baseball bat degrades too quickly for my liking, tires you out too quickly, and the damage reduction as you get tired is insane.
The spiked bat goes from a 2 hit kill to a 6 or 7 hit kill very quickly once you get tired (in my experience).
Are there any better weapons I can either acquire reasonably quickly or craft?
Whatever short blunts I find in the tool sheds to be honest. Hammers, wrenches, metal pipes/rods, etc... They all make suitable weapons.
In more dire circumstances, if nothing is available, forage for firewood. Tree branches degrade quickly but are easy to find and better than being unarmed.
Remember to use the strike/push/stomp combo to minimize durability loss on your weapon.
Honeslty pushing a stomping is really strong for the entire game, they're slow untill they get within a few meters, you can usually just push and stomp i'v killed 300 on my current run favourite weapon BARE HANDS!
Mah boi out here running fades on zombie hordes just throwing straight hands
Have you seen the kung fu mod :)
your legs are a powerful weapon. you shouldnt be fighting more than 2-3 zombies head on for the first few days/weeks anyway. unless you play with fit and strong
Spears are easy to craft and pretty strong, the main downfall is they break really easily. Find an axe and knife, cut down a tree, use the branches to make a spear. I think you can also craft planks into spears.
a hammer is a great weapon! i’d recommend staying away from short blades early on tho as their durability isn’t that great
My gf wants to get into the game. She has been using a claymore and is still struggling. I've been telling her to level dex but it still doesn't seem to be enough - which weapon would be even easier?
I haven't played the game myself so any advice for her would be appreciated.
Well since claymore leans more toward strength, leveling dex is pretty redundant in that case, as others have mentioned the Bloodhound Fang is usually what first timers will run, add on the bloodflame buff and it will carry you all the way till endgame.
Bloodhound fang. You get it by beating a mini boss that's located just before the weeping peninsula.
I’m playing a BHF build, have her look for bloodflame blade. Mimic ash amazing. Invest into dexterity and vigor, followed by endurance.
Yes and it will get you through most part of the game
Hell, it can get you through the entire game.
this. i used this for the whole game with my bf
Good boss to practice on too
If you talk to Blaidd first, he will fight the boss for you
Definitely stop leveling dex with that. It's a strength-dominant weapon, and strength scales your physical damage reduction faster than dex. Claymore is still very good. That said, guts Greatsword for life.
Moonveil
Levelling up vigor and endurance, instead of damage stats, is the best weapon for beginners.
So, up until yesterday I was running my Hunting Rifle from the Wayward quest (anti armor, better crits) at level 70, and it was decent. Then I did a Most Wanted public event and got Gunthers Big Iron.
I briefly tried a single shot revolver very early, and while it hit quite hard, the one-by-one reload was unbearable. But hey, this gun has faster reload, plus I got Ground Pounder perk now, so let's give it a try.
And wow, this thing just slaps. It hits like a truck, fires reasonable fast, and while the reload is still a bit annoying, it's much better especially since most regular enemies die in 1 or 2 hits anyway, so it's only an issue fighting big targets.
It's most certainly not the strongest weapon in the game overall, but the fact that you can get it from a rather easy event and it shines even without any mods unlocked makes it a great choice for newbies who don't have acess to the whole table yet.
I will certainly use it for a while...
Beast of Burden also has Holy Fire, a really good flamer. Nice thing about the weapons is ther among a few drops that can have their stars changed.
I still like Double Barrel Shotguns - once you get the tempo down, it'll be the last weapon you need for most content.
Gunther's ain't bad - neither is the Spirit, and the reload on the spirit is FAST.
Yeah, I also got a Western Spirit stashed. Problem is it's a lever rifle, and I just don't find any of those to learn mods.
But the plan at Whitesprings, of any gun you take a fancy to. Equip super duper. Craft a bunch.
Get shit tons of ammo and all the guns you can scrap.
If you're on Steam/PC I can craft ya a bunch to scrap
Quad double barrel/cold shoulder is amazing
It's not bad - a Quad/Explosive is actually a bit nicer, but they are close enough (at least until you 4 star the Quad Explosive).
I used it from levels 5 - 30 then I found the cold shoulder
Slap in some Weak Point and crippling perks on top of Master Gunslinger and whatnot and the single action revolver absolutely slaps. The reload time is slow but there are perks for that as well.
I have been running a single action revolver since the ghoul update. Gunthers is a good weapon but I upgraded to a Furious single action revolver when I could.
Hey, if you want, I can craft you some weapons for free if you're on Playstation
Keep an eye out in people’s vendors, too. I see them listed for 1,000 caps or so pretty often. I’ve gotten a few from the event, but I’ve never had an issue finding one for sale when I want a new one.
Just join Public event beast of burden to get Elder's Mark, this is the best rifle for new player.
This is my list of the best guns in the game of each category. Each group shall contain one that is researchable from the Collection Book. ( The one with the little • will indicate this.) If I have left anything out , comment and tell me ( I dont have the biggest of memories)

the best guns are obv just mythic weapons just pay someone to carry you /s
What I'd see if I were a new player: The best weapon of this category is event weapon you cannot get, event weapon you also cannot get, and a weapon from yet another limited time event that you also cannot get. And the best of these categories are the same thing. I don't think I saw any base-game weapons looking over this post except for the bazooka.
Guides for new players and good guns should be base game and expansion only since that's what's available to them, and possibly things from the current ongoing event if it's notably good. For example I encourage any and all STW players to get the spectral blade, both new and old, since it's easily the 2nd best sword in the game topped only by the mythic one.
the • signifies whether or not it is obtanable through regular pinata or collection book as I stated at the top
Still, a good chunk of your list is event items. My point is since they're literally unobtainable for new guys, they shouldn't be in the list in the first place. I'm not saying your post is wrong, since this is a collection of really good items, but directing it at new players when they can't get most of them wouldn't be what I'd do.
The best gun is a trap, or at least learning how to use them /s
Um... You're forgetting pistols.
oops will fix
Mercury LMG can be researched since Neon stuff is considered expansion.
The best weapon is the one you enjoy the most
That's not helpful to someone who hasn't played any of them
You’re right, I should’ve been biased and suggested one of the weapons I play instead
Try them all in the training room and see how it feels.
Each has their own niche use, and each requires practice. Pick one and practice it, then see if you like it. If not, try a different one
Whichever one clicks for you
Every weapon is different, and made to play completely different. Try out all of them until you find something you like.
Thanks in advance for any help. I'm new to STW. I'm fairly experienced with BR but still a major bot.
All of the "beginners guides" I have found for STW are still over my head. A few good tips, but nothing really explains what exactly I should do and how to do it. I've done a few missions but have no clue about these heroes or crafting or schematics or anything else. Guns break? WTF? How do you fix em? I'm overwhelmed. I read that I can do daily challenges for 50 Vbucks yet my quest list has no daily challenges. Recommendations on a good beginners guide for complete noobs like me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
As low level you can play as you want, but the higher you get the better youll have to be. Learn to build tunnels instead of spamming traps like retard ( traps are op they can make you afk almost every mission ). Also you should know that the game work with a rotation. Not all weapons/heroes are avaible all times. You can get some only during limited time quest lines or shop ( theyll come back but months after ) so make sure to buy as much heroes/weapons from the shop.
Also you unlock more option and sub menus after doing some main quests ( like daily missions that you get after few quests page ).
If ur main goal is vbucks find someone that can carry you till the end of the game. If you enjoy the game i suggest Demonjoefrance, roundedtiktak, or torriX on youtube. They pake very helpfukl videos about almost anything.
One last thing : DONT TRADE. Its useless cause crafting is not expensive and 99% of the time youll get scammed by some braindead kid that do this all day
The biggest tip I have is to focus on your heroes and survivors.
For survivors (These guys are the most important) you want to get the highest rarities possible, and match their personality types so you get bigger bonuses. Focus on Health boosts, Shield boosts, Trap durability if you can. If you get lucky and get some mythic survivors, use them. You can get some in the Llama shop but you’ll have to invest a few vbucks.
For heroes, I would recommend trying to get a few different heroes for different missions. Constructors are amazing for any defence based missions like Storm Shield defences, Ride the Lightning and retrieve the data. Ninjas and Soldiers are good for combat missions like Destroy the encampments, eliminate and collect, and dungeons. Outlanders are insanely good for support/utility and focus on getting materials as fast as possible. Use them on Resupply missions.
Some heroes can be used for other roles (For example, Fragment Flurry Jess is an outlander, but she is one of the strongest damage heroes in the game due to her ability)
"Survivors ... you want to get the highest rarities possible," So what does that mean? When do I choose between rarities and survivors? How do I use them? When do I make decisions around this?
Rarities work just like in BR, from common to legendary (and mythic). You’ll earn Flux of different rarities through certain missions, and the weekly shop always has rare, epic and legendary flux for sale. Flux allows you to increase the rarity of your survivors (and everything else).
You’ll meet a character called Director Riggs who will teach you how to use survivors a bit, and give you access to them. I would also recommend turning autofill off for survivors, as it will swap out your fully upgraded survivors for crap ones.
>heroes can be used for other roles (For example, Fragment Flurry Jess is an outlander, but she is one of the strongest damage heroes in the game due to her ability)
Thanks
No problem! I was in your spot only half a year ago, now I’m about halfway through Canny Valley! Once you get farther in the game, I might be able to help you out on missions. (STW stops you from doing missions of a party member is too strong)
You dont fix your weapons, you create new ones with materials you gather.
There's 4 Herosubclasses, each class specifies on a certain aspects of game utility and any hero within those subclasses specifies on something too, there's no really best hero, neither a best schematic all is made up individually for your playstyle
>to them. I would also recommend turning autofill off for survivors, as it will swap out your fully upgraded survivors for crap ones.
Thank you. I'm finding this stuff helpful.
Welcome. Its tough at first but the more you play the better you'll understand...
You cant repair guns, only craft and find them, daily vbuck missions after your 3rd storm shield defense, buy the safe things in the shop, keep one of every hero and weapon, never trade, that's all I got
Including hero loadouts Or not including hero loadouts (make sure to mention)
Edit: I was just trying to make a discussion between the community on what we thought are the best weapons and our opinions :/
The best weapon in the game is the personal preference.
There is absolutely no such thing as the best weapon in the game. All weapons are equally powerful in their own way. Also don't rely on meta too much or else you will be bored faster than a high end player.
Whoever gives you an answer to this is either a liar and/or straight up delusional. I already saw one with the xenon and now I’m waiting for the pot shot and deatomizer to appear. There is no weapon that is objectively the best in the game. If there was, everyone would craft it and all other weapons would serve no purpose. What makes a weapon the best is only what makes it the best for YOU. Example, I upgraded my viper to gold roll, and a lot of people hate it because they were told to. I think it’s good! Not only that but under appreciated. Is it the best? No! I have better, but it’s performance is definitely enough to consider upgrading.
Please answer the following to yourself:
What type of heroes do you like to run?
What class of weapon do you find yourself using most? Snipers? Assault rifles? Pistols? Or something else?
What missions do you favor?
All of these are things to consider when finding a weapon that’s right for you. A xenon bow won’t always be good for you. A pot shot won’t always be good for you. A deatomizer won’t always be good for you. If anyone else tells you (insert weapon name here) is the best in the game, no it isn’t. What’s best for you is just that, what’s best for you. Unfortunately none of us can decide that for you. The best we can do is help you narrow down your choices based on information you provide. It’s not up to us to decide what you run. If you need anything at all, please don’t hesitate to ask. Unfortunately this question is asked way too much and the answers given (xenon bow, pot shot, deatomizer) also given way too much. It’s not true. It doesn’t hurt to try things that people say they don’t like, because maybe you will like them. Hell, I made an argon axe build with whiteout Fiona and TRO that can rack up to a 92% crit chance. Top that off with crit hits cause an explosion 6th perk and you’ve got explosion after explosion! I believe that would be good for the farmers glory and the storm blade as well. 2 more underrated weapons. I hope you find what you’re looking for, and once more I offer my help to you. My DMs are open
Can’t it just be a fun discussion on what we like best? Obviously there’s isn’t a best, it’s an opinion. It’s good to share thoughts and opinions in weapons and loadouts, maybe learn something or hear something they hadn’t considered before? I mean there’s so much in this game to be learned open discussion can be really useful! I answered steam thrasher btw, knowing there isn’t a “best” weapon any more than there’s a “best” cereal. Just my thoughts. Cheers!
The key word in his question is “overall” there’s no weapon that’s a one size fits all kind of thing in this game.
I remember using the Argon assault rifle a lot. There was something about it that I loved, though I couldn't tell you for certain what it was.
I was also told the gravedigger was an insane weapon but I never liked it due to the limited magazine capacity.
>now I’m waiting for the pot shot and deatomizer to appear
Yep, I've done that now. ;-)
There is no overall best weapon.
I'll say that again.
There is no overall best weapon.
However, there are a few that will be useful to almost all players, irrespective of their play style, preferred loadout or PL.
A piercing weapon
Riot huskies are a pain in the arse, and sometimes you just need to shoot something through a wall. For this reason, it's always a good idea to have a weapon which can shoot through anything. The Xenon Bow, Neon Sniper or Ghost Pistol are examples. The Xenon is probably the most versatile of these because it's cheap on ammo and it does not require much accuracy (although the Neon also lets you *see* through anything).
A movement weapon
You don't *need* a 3x movement speed Baron, but once you've had one running without it seems slow. It's also very useful to have a melee with a jump attack (ie, to let your constructor jump upwards 1 tile high) such as the Guardian's Will - which you can also perk for 2x MS so it does largely the same job.
A utility weapon
Everyone should have an Obliterator, because you can knock buildings down with it very quickly (it pierces, so if you shoot along the length of a wall, you'll knock down more than one tile with 1 shot). It's also very useful as...
A weapon for defenders
The Obliterator is also a popular weapon for sniper defenders. Even though *you* can't use it to see through builds, apparently they can, so you can keep them safe in a 1x1 box and they're still useful. (The Neon also works, but is 7 energy cells a shot and defenders are not choosy about targets).
A giant killer
When Mr. Smasher comes calling and brings a lot of his mates, or when a mini-boss with some seriously nasty modifiers hoves into view, you're probably going to want to pull out a launcher of some kind. The Potshot is a popular choice for high single-target damage (useless AoE mind you), other people favour a Dam Buster perked for impact, to shove the big fellas around the map (and maybe even off it). Other launchers are available, YMMV.
A cheap crowd control weapon
Facing off against a mob but don't want to expend valuable rocket or energy ammo? Get yourself a Maverick, or similar AoE shotgun. For the low, low cost of a few shotgun shells, they'll keep the husks at bay.
A massive waste of energy cells
Sometimes you just have too much energy ammo. If this is a problem for you, then you need the De-Atomiser 9000. There's no other weapon quite like it for hoovering up any energy ammo you might have in your backpack.
When you replied to my comment, I took it at face value and almost cried, but then I read this and remembered the wink at the end.. good job. I like this comment. r/angryupvote
I’m not a low power level asking for what weapons to get I’m just trying to make a discussion
sorry ppl are treating this like a united nations meeting when you're very obviously just curious what people's favorite guns are...
Unfortunately that isn't the question OP had asked.
Had OP written "What's your favorite weapon in the game?", as opposed to "What's the best weapon in the game?", then this whole thread would have turned out very differently.
Let me clarify; I'm not berating OP for their choice of wording, it was a simple question, but the answer to that question in particular is a lot more nuanced when considering the varying versatility, functionality, and customizability of the weapons in this game, which leads to very different results for every player.
Notwithstanding, this is an excellent opportunity to take into account just how much of an effect certain words can have in conveying a particular message, and how that meaning of that message changes depending on the words chosen.
Personal opinion is that xenon bow is one of the best in the game. But I know everyone has their preference and the xenon bow is mine. The best weapon is different for everyone and I understand that. I’ve seen other comments asking people if they use more than the xenon bow and yes I do before anyone asks
I've been very casually playing Fortnite since its release, but I want to give it a fair shot now and really learn the mechanics of the game. I come from Overwatch and am Master in Voltaic Benchmarks, so my aim isn't an issue, I just really suck at building. I'm willing to put the time in to learn the mechanics, but I have no idea what to build.
Can anybody suggest some fundamental "bread and butter" builds that I should practice that will improve my ability to take fights?
I think stuff like ramp rushes and 90s would be a good place to start. Also focus on building a box and editing out as fast as possible. Though make sure you’re having fun while learning.
Edit: JivanTv has a bunch of YouTube videos and creative maps to help with fundamentals.
Don’t comment if you know nothing 😭
I don’t see you helping anyone
Box up make boxes. Good old fashioned tunneling is pretty fundamental and contains a lot of useful builds. Walking 90's are pretty easy and useful. Side jump to ramp. Double edit up, reset, edit cone into ramp, continue upwards.
here is a few to learn. Put the hours in, you can succeed.
Billy bicep and jivan have videos on how to build for beginners and jivan has a creative map that has video tutorials in the map
I second this! I am currently using one of jiven's maps as warm up / practice.
In the free build section, I can lower the speed down to 50%. This allows me to perfect my building and editing technique at a speed I can manage. My goal is to make the moves automatic so I execute them without thinking. I see improvement in my gameplay every time I commit to practicing.
From videos that you watch, choose one or two things to practice and focus on those. You don't have to do everything well, you can start with doing a few things well and then add on when you master those.
basic tunnels
standard 90s and 180s
basic double edits
pre-piece is so easy but helps so much
basic ramp rush
GET THE IDEA OF PEEKERS ADVANTAGE DRILLED INTO TOUR BRAIN
Let's help you !
First you need to build some basic muscle memory, so your first step should be shoot > plant a wall.
Second step, try to edit the wall to shoot again.
You should also learn how to box your self very fast, for that look down, plant a floor and make a 360 with walls then look on top and another floor. Then you can do the same but add cone after floor.
Learn how to make 90's.
Try to cone people when they try to take height by 90's.
Learn the simplest retake with scisor ramps, then maybe some more fancy ones.
The best map to practice is BHE FFA 12 players because it's a tiny arena, you spawn fast and if you kill someone your health go back to 200.
