Fortnite Tips and Tricks for New Players

TL;DR

  • Start with Zero Build mode.
  • Focus on having fun rather than winning.
  • Enable "Visualize Sound Effects" for better awareness.
  • Practice aiming and movement.

Game Modes and Playstyles

For new players, starting with Zero Build mode can be less overwhelming as it removes the complexity of building [2:1][5:3]. It's important to remember that Fortnite is a fun and silly game, so don't take it too seriously. Many players recommend focusing on enjoying the game rather than stressing about wins [2:2][5:2]. Hiding and looting until you build confidence is a valid strategy [3:1].

Weapons and Items

The weapon meta in Fortnite changes every season, but legendary or mythic guns dropped by bosses are typically strong choices [1:1]. For healing, use mini potions before big ones, and familiarize yourself with different items and their uses [3:1]. Purple swords are currently helpful for beginners [2:1].

Settings and Features

Enable "Visualize Sound Effects" in the settings to see directional indicators for footsteps and gunshots. This feature is crucial for situational awareness [4:1][4:4]. Adjust your controller settings to improve aim sensitivity and reaction time [4:3].

Practice and Patience

Improving in Fortnite requires practice and patience. Work on staying calm during fights and focus on aiming and movement [5:4]. Watching streamers can also help you learn strategies and mechanics [5:6]. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, and it's okay to make mistakes as you learn [5:7].

Late Game Strategy

In the late game, pay attention to safe zones and try to position yourself advantageously within them [4:7]. Monitor the number of players left to decide whether to engage in fights [4:8]. Cars can be useful for mobility, protection, and offense [4:5].

ORIGINAL POST

Howdy!

Usually I play call of duty and other fps games, decided to give Fortnite a try! It’s been a nice change of pace and the game runs great.

Got a few wins my first few matches on zero build / build. I just have a few questions.

  1. Are there any meta guns like call of duty? Or is it more so what you find is what you get?

  2. Is it “easy” because I’m starting on fresh lobbies? I’m assuming they will get more sweaty down the line 😅

  3. I’m still figuring things out! So any tips on potions, healing, etc would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you!

  1. The weapons and loot pool changes every season/chapter.Usually the meta guns are the legendary or mythic guns the bosses drop, and any exotic weapons that might exist. This season the overlord spires will drop a random exotic. And you can buy mythic weapons in the superhero room beneath the academy if your hero level is high enough.
  2. Yes, if you just started playing on a new account, the game will put you in predominantly bot lobbies until you level up between 10-20 i think. Then the game uses a SBMM to try to put you in lobbies with similar skilled players.
  3. Zero build carrying heals and movement items like shockwaves are kind of a must. Build mode still important, but you can use builds for cover, and you can't in zero build.

What would be your one and only biggest tip for someone just starting the game? I want to compile the best tips and go through them together to improve.

Thanks!

Don’t get hung up on winning. Realistically most people win like 3-5% of their games. Just have fun and have some good fights and that 😀

1.) dont take it so seriously, its a silly fun game and 99/100 players lose each match

2.) any playstyle is valid. you can get 5th place and higher consistently just from hiding

3.) (in regular fn, not og mode) dont be afraid of the storm early on. you can travel in it safely for a while

4.) try out zero build for a while before moving into build mode.

5.) (right now) purple swords are very helpful for beginners

6.) dont land right after the bus lets you leave. wait a little and find a spot. all the tryhards hop out early

im new to fortnite! any tips?

Posted by Biccyy · in r/FortNiteBR · 4 months ago

I just started about two or three weeks ago! i made an account back in december of 2023 tho if i remember right but only played two games and never touched it again.

ive decided i want to actually play now! i love how unserious the game seems and kind some players are, every shooter game is going to have a fair share of toxic people ive met a few so far but overall seen alot of kind people too! im looking for tips or tricks for what to do as a new player.

ive already tried to take a little advantage of what i know for some free stuff like i made a mydisney account for the free stormtrooper, i enabled 2fa, however gameplay wise or things to be aware of or know or just general gameplay tips to work for would be very appreciated, even if you dont have much to say it could even just be a “goodluck” :)

Hey there! Like title says, I picked up Fortnite for the first time a few weeks ago and I’m loving it! I stick to Zero Build and don’t think I do too bad most matches? But I’d love everyone to dump their tips, tricks, what they wish they knew what they started playing! My husband refuses to give it a try so I solo every game 🥲

I also mostly play as a solo player, and I'm not very good, but I have fun. Here are some good newbie tips for playing like me ie a coward.

  1. Priority 1 is to turn on "Visualize Sound effects," this puts a little ring on your HUD that will show you footsteps or gunshots of other players directionally around you. It's phenomenal for seeing where players are. When you crouch you don't make these footsteps.
  2. There are bots everywhere. In your first few games there can be as many as 99 bots alongside you in the arena. As time goes on that drops to 80, 60, or even 0, but at the beginning it's largely bots. This can give you a false sense of confidence, as they're fairly easy to defeat, but then you may encounter a real human and they can kill you in a second.
  3. Hiding is a great way to get wins. Not every player enjoys playing like a coward, but if you want you can jump into a car or SUV and jump in the passenger seat or the back seat by pressing the crouch button. This makes it so you make no sound and most people don't think of checking the back seat of a car, so it's pretty good cover. Also you can hop in the front seat easily enough to drive places.
  4. Run from fights you didn't start. It's pretty easy to kill somebody in this game, so if somebody gets the jump on you, it's usually better to run away than to stay and fight. They've got the element of surprise, and if you can use a rift/jump in a car/whatever to get away you've got a much better chance than staying and fighting. It is usually good to keep a mobility item, like the grapple glove or a Chug Splash and a lighstaber.
  5. Keep your shields high. I like to land next to SLURP trucks which are buried semis with SLURP written on the side of them. Destroying one of those will get you 100 healing, and if you're fully healed that's gonna be 100 shield. Try to maintain 100 health and then keep some large shield potions on you, if possible. Currently killing the NPCs around storm forecast towers will get you a chug jug which gives 200 healing, either to shields or health, and that's my favorite healing item. Also lets you know where the next storm circle will be, which is nice. You probably don't need more than 2 guns unless you're gonna get in a lot of fights, so use your other slots for healing and mobility items.

Obviously there are dozens of things to keep in mind, but as a fairly unskilled player, I prioritize being healthy and being hidden. Find some items that work for your playstyle and focus on that. I like to keep a shotgun as my weapon of choice and to use cars to both get around and provide cover. It's nice enough.

I think these are decent starter tips but one I think is majorly flawed. Number 3 about hiding to try to get wins. If you want to improve at the game I would encourage you to fight more often and actually seek out confrontation strategically. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHERE COVER IS. You need to learn to effectively use cover while traversing the map because you can get destroyed by guns with or without scopes from a good distance. Hiding in bushes the majority of the match to result in only 1-3 kills and maybe a coin flip at best for a victory just isn’t fun in my opinion and will definitely not make you better. It’s way better of an experience to rack up 15 kills and then come in 7th place than to spend 25 minutes in the match, only have 2 engagements the whole time and come in 1-3rd.

Regarding cover, CARS! Cars are mobile cover and mobile weapons. You can run people over and traverse the map quickly from objectives like forecast or the train or hiring npc’s or rotating for next storm much more quickly and safely in a vehicle.

You can practice in creative maps if you really want to improve with certain types of weapons or items and I’m sure it would help me improve but I’ve never done it. I just play No Build BR solo or with a few friends.

There’s a bajillion things that could be covered but I think those are a few specific tips and lastly I’d HIGHLY recommend checking out EvolveJake’s content on YouTube for Fortnite Zero Build. He’s an amazing player at a level that most of us will never achieve but he also explains how and why he does things the way he does and he gives tips on specific POI locations, weapons, loadout pairings, movement strategies… just very comprehensive. Every now and then i pull off like 1-2 moves that I think he’d have been proud to see in game and I get hyped lol but watching his content some has definitely improved my knowledge of the game overall and how well I do.

If I were to go on a diatribe about 1 thing in Fortnite it would be cars. They're everything. They're shields, a bush, a weapon, and a mobility item all rolled into one, and they don't take an inventory slot. Cars are absolutely the way to go in the modes that have them. To a degree this is true of this seasons Starfighters too, but they're a bit loud and a bit obvious. I mean, you CAN park a TIE fighter under a bridge, but it's not exactly subtle.

Per your quote, "Hiding in bushes the majority of the match to result in only 1-3 kills and maybe a coin flip at best for a victory just isn’t fun in my opinion and will definitely not make you better." I think there's some truth to that, but I think the value judgment that sitting and waiting isn't fun is a personal thing. However, if your goal is to get better, I agree that this is not necessarily the right strategy. Practicing combat is absolutely a good skill, and so getting in lots of fights will certainly make you a better player. If your goal is to WIN, though, then hiding and waiting for the last few players to remain is absolutely a good strategy.

There's something a friend of mine says, which is that gamers will use the most effective strategies, regardless of whether or not they're fun. It is probably most fun to run to enemy laden areas and start blasting in all directions with the hope that you'll be the lone survivor, but it's not a very effective strategy for winning. An effective strategy is to hide under a rock for 20 minutes and then third person 2nd and 3rd place from space with an X-Wing. Is it better to have fun or win? Hard to say.

Do bot ever drop to 0 ? I never played a single game without tons of bots. Maybe it's a feature only in high ranks (I don't play ranked) ?

1 upvotes on reddit
Utop_Ian · 3 months ago

I don't think they do outside of Ranked. There are a few very sweaty modes that I think are all humans, but for zero build non-ranked, I'd be shocked if you ever play with less than 50 bots. Hard to say for sure, but I'd rather there be 50 bots and a full 100 players than 50 humans. I always feel kinda bad fighting other humans.

There are always bots in Unranked matches. In Ranked mode there are bots at the lower ranks but not at the higher ones.

There is a Discord group called Fortnite Girls Only, I’ve made a few friends to play with that way! I recommend joining! For gameplay tips, for sure turn on visualize sound fx like the other commenter said, that’s crucial. That said, I have five more crucial tips:

  1. Play around with your controller settings - the default settings have you turning pretty slow (extremely slow if you ask me, haha) and the dead zones are set high, which slows/reduces sensitivity and reaction time. I would recommend lowering your dead zones and increasing aim sensitivity (and ramp speed) gradually as you get better, and eventually you’ll find a sweet spot.

  2. Practice opening your inventory and moving your items around quickly. Rifle to the left, then shotgun, then your mobility item (grappler, shockwaves, etc) or whatever works best for you - the key is to always have your items in the same places, so you can very quickly toggle to what you need, the split second you need it.

  3. Practice shotgun fights without aiming down sights, or in other words, firing from the hip. Not exclusively, but it should be a skill you practice. As you get better you will get into close range battles where opponents are jumping all around you and if you’re trying to scope them at close range, especially with a pump, they’ll knock you before you can fire a round.

  4. Get good at using mobility items. Especially if you’re playing no-build. There won’t always be a car available, especially in a small circle, or if you need to bounce from inside a building. It’s essential to practice using shockwave grenades and develop muscle memory to propel yourself up and forward, not backwards into the storm (I’ve done that so many times, lol) To be honest, you’d probably develop better habits and a better skill set if you play Reload for a while, but, you do you!

  5. Lastly, never stand still for too long, even if you think no one can see you (you will get sniped), don’t run around with your weapon pointed at the ground (tits up, always) and RELOAD, for fuck’s sake, reload your weapons! 💕

The thing that took me longest to learn, but I grew more naturally into as I aged, was patience.

Patience will help you universally with aim, survival in BR, and winning fights.

  • Waiting to line up the shot before taking it - even in a heated fight or facing damage, being able to stop, think, see, process what's going on, not panic, and calmly aim and take your shot. This takes a lot of fortitude to overcome the natural fight/flight reaction and corresponding surge of fear and adrenaline that will naturally want to take over your body. Practice maps are great for getting over this.
  • Waiting to get the advantage - high ground, better loot, escape route, more shields, etc.
    • e.g. Tempting to run right into the fray with a small blaster off the landing, but maybe let the herd thin out and find yourself a shield potion, a movement item or a better weapon or two.
    • Your patience will be rewarded with an easy third-party of the semi-finalists of the landing, who have conveniently gathered some of the key loot for you already.
  • Waiting to survive (knowing when to sit it out)
    • Maybe you need more heals
    • Maybe you need more loot
    • Maybe the ring's close
    • Or maybe you can't shoot
    • These are all good reasons
    • To plant your ass down
    • Get to crouching,
    • And sitting around.
    • Don't be impatient
    • Don't feel so bad
    • Always remember
    • It works for BushCampDad 😂

My main tip for Zero Build would be that when you get down to the Top 10 players or so, pay very close to the safe circles and try to get to the new circles when they are revealed before your opponents do.  If you're in the circle and they have to move towards where you are, you are at a huge positional advantage and can often get some pretty easy kills.

Also when it gets into the late game try to pay attention on the top right to how many players are left. It makes a big difference on whether or not you want to hop out of your bush to fight someone you see if they are the last person left with you or if there are 2-3 more people you can’t see. Note the number is the total number of people alive so minus one to remove yourself from the total to know how many opponents are left.

Me and my fiancée play Zero Build duos, I've played Fortnite on and off since before Battle Royale and she started playing in the Greek or Wrecked season, can't 100% remember. For reference I play on Series X and she plays on mobile both with Xbox controllers.

Tips I've given her as we've played and she's learned that she said has helped are (in no particular order):

  1. Enable Visualize Sound Effects in Settings, while it's an accessibility feature technically, everyone uses it and you will be at a disadvantage without it. It allows you to see the direction and type of sound effects such as damage, healing, rebooting, footsteps, etc on a 2D wheel on your screen. Often times, I'll "see" a sound before I even hear it.

  2. Always try to secure high ground, especially in the later circles. Mountains, hills, etc. Easy for you to shoot down on people, harder for them to shoot up and the terrain means the enemy rushing up to you will be more vulnerable.

  3. Don't rely solely on a single weapon in a fight, switching weapons is faster than reloading. Especially with the lightsaber, it can be easy to get "tunneled" solely using it, resulting in you getting gun downed when switching to a gun yourself might have worked better.

  4. Get the Forecast Tower. Strangely not many players do. The ability to see more circles sooner allows you to secure the best terrain easily, see #2. The NPCs at the Forecast tower also always drop a purple gun and a couple blue, along with shields and sometimes even a chug jug.

Bonus: Figure out where you like what type of guns in your loadout, what works best for you. I personally do the AR in my first slot, shotgun in second, smg in third, sniper or special in fourth and heals in fifth. You can configure settings to automatically sort your loadout slots once you figure out your preferences as you pick up weapons and loot.

New Player Help/Advice?

Posted by Standard_Economy_137 · in r/FortNiteBR · 3 months ago

I hope this sub is new user friendly, but I recently downloaded Fortnite because I wanted to teach myself how to play. I’ve started off by joining some training maps and just trying to get used to the controls and mechanics of everything, but I just find it overwhelming at how you have to stay aware of so many buttons and things lol. Idk if any of this makes sense, but for some context I’m not really used to FPS out of nervousness with aiming and shooting, so I felt like FN would be a good introduction, but I’m afraid that I’ll never be decent enough to actually understand how the game & quests work. If anyone has any tips please let me know. :) Please be kind

Honestly just jump into zero build and go have fun. (Or build if that's your thing! But my point is just hop into a game lol)

Think about having fun more than anything else, think about small objectives rather than big ones -- I don't have guns, lemme get some guns. I don't have shields, lemme get some shields. Lemme make the next storm circle.

The bigger picture will come to you naturally, don't stress about it, it's a silly fun game and you'll get the most out of it by starting trying to have a silly fun time :)

Ok my best advice for a new player is probably a few things.

First off I would recommend learning basics down like learning the weapons, movement like tac sprinting, mantling, and stuff like that, and try and play Zero Build or Zero Build creative maps

Then once you learn the basics and want to start learning how to build, its best to either find private creative maps and just free build, or play some creative maps that have building and try it out

And if you want to I can even add you to try and how you how the game works, Im actually trying to look for more people to play with so it would help both of us if you'd be down

All I'll say is that my SO has been playing since C3S3 and he's still terrible somehow. This is basically the only shooter he plays and he always panics and gets himself killed. His arch nemesis is gravity.

Basically, your first goal is to work on your nerves. Stay calm and just point and shoot at enemies. Also practice movement. You need to know how to run just as much as shooting. Its a long process but if you keep at it you'll improve.

Fortnite is definitely rather overwhelming at first and it will take months if not years in order to fully get comfortable with all of the nuances of the game. I think the best advice especially if you're brand new is to just play the game and try your best to figure out what all the weapons and items do. Don't worry about getting a lot of eliminations or winning, that will come with time as you improve and get more comfortable playing.

Are you playing Build mode or Zero Build? I have a strong suggestion if you're playing Build mode but it wouldn't apply for Zero Build since it has to do with controller layout for building.

They’re not exactly welcoming to new players over there, especially if you’re playing zero build.

just experience the game. Make your own opinion about it. There's more than one mode, you have RL, lego, ballistic as well.

Creative is a whole other can of worms. You can find a LOT of unrelated things. It's good for when you're burnt out on the main game :P

Learn how to build in a creative setting. I never really learned to build and I really wish I have.

Fortnite tips and tricks for new players

Here are some essential tips and tricks for new Fortnite players:

  1. Master the Basics:

    • Building: Practice building ramps, walls, and boxes. Building is crucial for defense and gaining high ground.
    • Shooting: Get comfortable with different weapons and their mechanics. Aim for headshots for maximum damage.
  2. Choose Your Landing Spot Wisely:

    • Start in less populated areas to gather resources and loot without immediate confrontation. Gradually work your way to busier areas as you gain confidence.
  3. Gather Resources:

    • Always collect materials (wood, brick, metal) while moving. You’ll need them for building during fights and to protect yourself.
  4. Use Headphones:

    • Sound is vital in Fortnite. Use headphones to hear enemy footsteps and gunfire, giving you a tactical advantage.
  5. Learn the Map:

    • Familiarize yourself with the map, including named locations, loot spots, and potential hiding places. Knowing the terrain can help you plan your movements.
  6. Stay Aware of the Storm:

    • Keep an eye on the storm circle and plan your movements accordingly. Don’t get caught in the storm, as it can deal significant damage.
  7. Practice in Creative Mode:

    • Use Creative Mode to practice building and shooting without the pressure of a battle royale match. This will help you improve your skills.
  8. Play with Friends:

    • Team up with friends who are more experienced. They can provide tips and support during matches, making the game more enjoyable.
  9. Watch and Learn:

    • Watch streams or videos from skilled players to learn strategies, building techniques, and game sense.
  10. Stay Calm:

    • In high-pressure situations, try to stay calm. Panicking can lead to mistakes. Take a deep breath and focus on your strategy.

Recommendation: Focus on building and resource management early on. These skills will significantly enhance your gameplay and give you a better chance of surviving longer in matches. Enjoy the learning process, and don’t hesitate to experiment with different strategies!
