How to Improve at Fortnite for Beginners

TL;DR Focus on practice, analyze your gameplay, and prioritize having fun while learning the basics.

Practice and Gameplay Analysis

Improvement in Fortnite comes with consistent practice and analyzing your gameplay. Many players recommend practicing specific skills such as editing, building, and aiming separately to avoid overwhelming yourself [3:1]. Additionally, it's beneficial to be analytical about your gameplay; after each match, consider what went wrong and how you can improve [2:1]. This mindset helps you identify areas where you need more focus, whether it's aiming mechanics or strategic positioning.

Starting with Zero Build Mode

For beginners, starting with Zero Build mode can simplify the game by removing the complexity of building. This allows new players to focus on other aspects like movement, aiming, and map awareness [5:4]. Playing Zero Build also provides a chance to engage in combat without the pressure of mastering building techniques immediately [5:3].

Learning from Others

Watching streamers and YouTubers can be an effective way to learn different play styles and strategies. Observing how experienced players position themselves, manage their loadouts, and react in various situations can offer valuable insights [5:8]. Additionally, playing with friends who are more skilled can provide opportunities to learn through observation and direct advice [2:3].

Managing Nerves and Enjoying the Game

Staying calm during matches is crucial, especially for those who experience panic firing or movement [4:2]. Focusing on small objectives, such as gathering weapons and shields, can help reduce stress and make the game more enjoyable [5:3]. Remember that Fortnite is ultimately a game meant for fun, so try not to put too much pressure on yourself regarding performance [5:6].

Exploring Creative Maps

Creative maps like "Zero Build The Pit" or "Go Goated" can accelerate skill development by placing you in high-stress combat situations repeatedly [4:1][4:2]. These maps allow you to experiment with different weapons and techniques, helping you find what works best for you in a controlled environment.

All my friends at school make fun of me because I am not that good at Fortnite. Are there any tips I can have to get better at attacking and just some basic stuff? I am decent at building and my aim is pretty good but I lose at lot because I get nervous and just push at the wrong times.

To improve at strategic and tactical skill, what I have found to work very well is to analyze each death. You don’t have to actually look at the replay or anything, just take like a few minutes each time to think about exactly what you did wrong that led to you losing and what you could have done instead.

Just practise and practice some more, it comes with time.

Watch some YouTube videos, get used to the weapons to see what suits you best. Land in a quiet area of the map and get a good inventory that you are happy with then practice on the first few bots you come across.

I've been playing for about 7 years, still get nervous at end game sometimes and it all goes wrong!

You will get there, just try different play styles and know when to push or retreat and play the long game.

You will get there, good luck and hoping for your first win, you will always remember it. (Mine was in 2018 with a light saber in the Star Wars crossover, was wearing the Lace skin 😄)

I will say I’ve been playing since Chapter 2 Season 6 (2021) so i’m not new but I never really got good. My highest rank was around platinum but thats only because I was playing with friends that were diamond and elite who are now unreal. I’m just trying to show my friends that i’m good and that I won’t sell their ranked game.

Ive been playing since season 2 and i am terrible at the game. At the end of season 4 i got my first kill. I have never win a game and yet my friends who are worse than me have won at least one. Has anyone got tips on how to get good at the game?

Well if you just want to win, you basically can just camp it out and luck out a win at the end.

But if you want to actually just get better. The best thing to do is drop close to populated areas (so like the houses near salty and retail). Loot those houses and get like 200-300 wood and then go clean up the kills in those places where you likely have more shield and materials. Try and rush them with ramp rushes and get the high ground.

To learn how to build, you pretty much just have to go into playground mode and practise as long as you can. If you keep doing this, over time you will just get better and better.

Play to improve, not to just play. What I mean by this is being analytical while playing rather than just auto-piloting . You have to question your own gameplay. "Why did I die there?" Did you miss your shot? Did you get outbuilt? Did you over commit on trying to get a kill? You need to figure out what you're doing wrong. If it's your aiming mechanics, you have to practice aiming. If you're struggling to shoot opponents because they keep building in front of you, then you need to improve on your building to get better angles.

Hello everyone, I just got my new gaming laptop and after years of watching fortnite content i can finally play it, well kind of the problem is i suck absolute ass. I mean i used to play with my friends and drop 20 bombvs but i am pretty sure they were all bots and I tried ranked and real players obliterated me, but I want to comeback and already I am dying in like top 30-20. SO do u have any advice on how to learn . Because I have been practicing 90s since like a week , and i do them pretty nice in training range, but always screw up in match, I also tend to loose the location of my opponent and when i panic build i often find myself stuck in my own builds, so any advice is appreciated

Practice editing, building and shooting/aim separately and try not to overwhelm yourself

Watch your friends/youtubers play and study their style (where they position themselves and what weapons/loadouts they use)

Create your own key binds, figure out what key binds work best for you

Don’t get frustrated or give up, it might take a while but you will eventually get better

Just not improving.

Posted by yentruoc96 · in r/FortNiteBR · 4 months ago

I started playing Fortnite again a couple days ago after not playing it for, like, seven months. I'm level 90 now but it just doesn't seem like I'm improving at all. I don't know what anything means other than slurp juice and guns, and my wife just taught me tonight how to get the mythic Midas gun.

Any tips on getting better? Should I just accept that I suck?

I have a mild form of cerebral palsy so a lot of my issues with "panic firing" or "panic moving" the left analog come from me having twitches and wasting ammo. I play with a Wolverine v2 Razer controller that I've never had issues with playing any other game.

Both my wife and my niece are super into this game and having something to bond long distance over is worth the skill issue.

Thank you to anyone in advance!

Jump into a map called “Zero Build PIT” or “The Pit”. It’s a small map that allows you to constantly be in tense CC combat situations. You can try out new guns, techniques and sensitivity’s/controls while you’re in there as after you die 2/3 times no situation become tense. This helped me a bunch when I decided I wanted to get better. Look into changed your sensitivity - it’s night and day once you find and get used to the sensitivity that is best for you

ComprehensiveBee2202 · 4 months ago

I would play with your wife and niece as you enjoy that and if they aren't around just play solos.

If you like playing it doesn't matter how good you are, it's just for fun after all.

I've been playing for 7 years and still have terrible games and make big mistakes, then I just land somewhere quiet and enjoy doing challenges etc.

Practice will improve how you play and if you don't win who cares!

It depends on what you need to improve. If it’s map and loot awareness, then all you can do is explore and memorize the map. When it comes to skill, the best way to improve is to constantly put yourself in high-stress fights. You can do this the slow way by playing regular matches, or you can speed it up by playing creative maps like Zero Build The Pit or Go Goated for aim, or the build version for building practice.

New Player Help/Advice?

Posted by Standard_Economy_137 · in r/FortNiteBR · 3 months ago

I hope this sub is new user friendly, but I recently downloaded Fortnite because I wanted to teach myself how to play. I’ve started off by joining some training maps and just trying to get used to the controls and mechanics of everything, but I just find it overwhelming at how you have to stay aware of so many buttons and things lol. Idk if any of this makes sense, but for some context I’m not really used to FPS out of nervousness with aiming and shooting, so I felt like FN would be a good introduction, but I’m afraid that I’ll never be decent enough to actually understand how the game & quests work. If anyone has any tips please let me know. :) Please be kind

All I'll say is that my SO has been playing since C3S3 and he's still terrible somehow. This is basically the only shooter he plays and he always panics and gets himself killed. His arch nemesis is gravity.

Basically, your first goal is to work on your nerves. Stay calm and just point and shoot at enemies. Also practice movement. You need to know how to run just as much as shooting. Its a long process but if you keep at it you'll improve.

Honestly just jump into zero build and go have fun. (Or build if that's your thing! But my point is just hop into a game lol)

Think about having fun more than anything else, think about small objectives rather than big ones -- I don't have guns, lemme get some guns. I don't have shields, lemme get some shields. Lemme make the next storm circle.

The bigger picture will come to you naturally, don't stress about it, it's a silly fun game and you'll get the most out of it by starting trying to have a silly fun time :)

Ok my best advice for a new player is probably a few things.

First off I would recommend learning basics down like learning the weapons, movement like tac sprinting, mantling, and stuff like that, and try and play Zero Build or Zero Build creative maps

Then once you learn the basics and want to start learning how to build, its best to either find private creative maps and just free build, or play some creative maps that have building and try it out

And if you want to I can even add you to try and how you how the game works, Im actually trying to look for more people to play with so it would help both of us if you'd be down

Fortnite is definitely rather overwhelming at first and it will take months if not years in order to fully get comfortable with all of the nuances of the game. I think the best advice especially if you're brand new is to just play the game and try your best to figure out what all the weapons and items do. Don't worry about getting a lot of eliminations or winning, that will come with time as you improve and get more comfortable playing.

need tips as someone who recently started playing

I started playing fortnite at the start of june after avoiding trying it out for a while and found it really fun. I want to get better but the more I play, the more I get frustrated that there are people who are just way better than me (which I know is normal! It’s just frustrating and It’s the reason I want to hear some tips). My favorite mode so far is reload zero build and from what I’ve noticed it’s way sweatier than other game modes. What helped you get better in general?

I recommend playing zero build squads as a beginner. You don’t have to engage everyone. Take it slow and think methodically. Adjust your sensitivity if you find yourself over or under aiming

I’ve found squads a lot more fun than solos/duos! I just get nervous sometimes when my teammates die and I’m expected to carry but I guess it all takes time to get used to. Thanks!

I agree with the always run in most situations when you're the last one standing, especially in reload if reboots are still going.

For reload, while you're still learning, find a couple guns you like to carry and then fill the rest of your loadout with movement and heals. Be the medic in teams for a while and stay on the outskirts of the fights and assist. If your team starts getting picked off, find a safe spot while they reboot.

In solos, when you get killed by someone you see as much better than you, spectate them for a few minutes. You may pick up something from their gameplay that will help you understand certain movements or ideas to implement into your gameplay.

If you can manage to watch Evolve Jake’s videos daily over a month or two, you will definitely learn a thing or two.

He tries to make useful informative videos for Zero Build, and if you put into practice some of his ideas, you will start playing better.

Welcome to the game, don’t let any negativity in this sub sully your experience, and just enjoy the game.

My partner I play with is much better than me and playing w them, seeing how they react to situations and what not has helped a lot too!

How Do You REALLY Get Better at Fortnite?

Posted by Purple_Restaurant275 · in r/FortniteBattleRoyale · 4 months ago

Started playing seriously about 3 years ago, and lately I’ve been feeling kinda stuck. Can't get out of Gold for a while. I can hold my own, but I’m not seeing the kind of progress I hoped for. I'm even considering switching to a different game just to feel I'm improving again!

I’ve thought about trying paid coaching, but it always felt kinda awkward or overpriced. Not sure if it actually helps or just ends up being more hype than value.

Not looking for “just play more” advice. I mean, what actually helped you improve? Coaching? Watching replays? Feedback from friends or teammates? Would love to hear what really worked for you—or what totally didn’t. Any content creators, coaches, or resources you’d actually recommend?

P.S. I’m also trying to figure out how people actually improve and whether coaching really helps. Made a quick 2-min survey—would mean a lot if you filled it out:

Watch FNCS livestreams. Watching people that are crazy is both inspiring and a good learning tool.

Play creative. Even just freebuilding and editing in an empty creative lobby can go a long way.

Survive. This is by far the most important tip. Dropping 10 kills and dying in 75th place isn't going to net you nearly as much progress as getting a few kills in the top 10, even if you don't win.

For me and what i tell my girlfriend is, you almost want to be careless. These people telling you to watch Pros isnt going to work, you have to just throw EVERYTHING at the wall, if you are in a car, learn to FLY around the map, learn to B hop from impulses, learn to instinctually switch weapons, and learn to keep your gun in the action (no mantling in the wrong moments, no sprinting in the wrong moments) & this might be obvious but make Sure you have Visualize Audio on. Alot of people freeze up or panic in a fight, if you do your best to be as CRAZY as possible EVERYTIME, it really does help you see how normal most engagements are also, Queue for Ranked Reload. I have had great teammates & have also help plenty of people achieve greatness. In short. Be carless. Be crazy. Use all your items. USE THEM, DONT HODL THEM

If you wanna improve, watch players who are way better than you. Don’t just watch for highlights. Pay attention to how they rotate, take fights, build, and especially when they don’t take a fight. Try to understand their decision-making, even when it looks weird or different from what you’d do. That’s where you learn the most.
Watching VODs of your own games helps too, but it can be hard to spot your mistakes if you don’t know what ‘good’ looks like yet. That’s why watching ranked climbs or ‘road to champs’ series is so useful, it shows what changes at each level.
I’ve had to tweak my playstyle at different points just to break through plateaus. What works in gold lobbies might get you clapped in diamond lobbies. Knowing when to adapt is key.

I watch sliinky and tobiWanShinobi a fair bit and listen to tobi’s tips, I play ZB so it’s mainly taking those ideas about movement and strategy.

Tobi has a training map that’s really good and I go in that a fair bit to dial in settings. Making sure your movement is at the level you can control gameplay.

I got some thumb stick extension things which was a game changer.

I played with purpose. If I made a mistake and suffered, I’d make sure I knew what I should have done better and then do that next time a similar thing happened.

For me, I've always loved fortnite. Began in Season 3, but SUCKED at building. So much so that it made me quit the game on and off over the years. However, at the beginning of Chapter 6 Season 2 (in February) I decided to try my best to play FN (frfr) and NOT give up despite the skill cap I would inevitably face. It's been 3 months, and I've peaked Diamond 1 (never done that well in any competitive PVP before!). Not that this is crazy high elo, but I feel more accomplished than ever. What I would suggest is a few things: Check out the following Youtubers: JivanTV (VibinJivan) & KenBeans. They have excellent beginner friendly content and also have great creative maps to practice on. Specifically, Jivan has what's called "How to freebuild" and "How to Piece Control". Through these maps, I've learned all kinds of skills I never even knew existed. He covers the bases and it's great to build your foundation on. Raider464 is a legendary editor, and has always been infamous for his mechanics maps. His current map is "Mechanics V.5" (Map Code: 2424-4344-7824). Alternatively, Gabriellho has a great all-in-one practice map for Aim, Piece Control, and Mechanics (With Demonstrations!) (Map Code: 9510-9643-4467) This is currently my favorite map to practice on!

TL;DR - Improving at FN isn't as complex as you may think. There are many resources you can use to improve fast! I suggest Jivan's "How to Freebuild" (Map Code: 6483-9631-9857) and "How to Piece Control" (Map Code: 7037-5244-5527) to get started. My favorite map to learn/practice on is called "Practice Map" by Gabriellho (Map Code: 9510-9643-4467). GLHF friend :D

There’s a lot of common advice with stuff like play everyday and analyze your deaths/replays but that is always pretty vague and won’t give you tangible results. In my experience the best way to improve is to practice things one at a time and accumulate new tricks/skills over time which add up to you becoming good overall.

Focus on improving. Just playing the game wont make you improve fast anymore after certain point.

Every time you die or lose alot or health, try to think what you could've done differently. Don't blame RNG or something else than yourself, always try to find what you did wrong.

Don't try to make the game easy for yourself, take fights and land in spots you're not comfortable with. This is how you will get more comfortable in certain scenarios and winning will be way easier in future.

Spend more time in Playground practicing both basic and advanced builds / strats. Try to perfect 90 degree turns and some usual edits.

Watch pros play and do 1v1s and analyze what they do in certain situations. If you want to learn positioning and game iq, watch Poach and Vivid play in scrims or Skrimishes.

How you usually win fights easily is by shooting with pump / heavy and then blocking his shot, repeat. Tfue is master of this and he doesn't even carry smgs anymore since there is no need to. If you want to perfect this, watch Tfue and look how he builds after every shot.

Agreed. As long as you aren’t winning every time, you can improve a lot from it if you realize your mistakes. It’s a great way to practice mechanical building as well as box fighting.

You need a healthy mix of aim training, creative (edit courses, boxfighting, storm wars, etc.), w-keying in Arena, scrims, reviewing your own replays as well as pros, and researching the map on lootlake.info.

If you feel like you're hitting a plateau when it comes to mechanics, don't abandon your creative routine, but also work on the mental side of your game. Hop into battle lab to take a fresh look at your drop spot, ie try to find some new cheeky angles to abuse for easy kills. If you die off spawn watch the replay to learn what you did wrong & they did right. Even if they "got lucky" there's still something you probably could have done differently. Figure out a safe & repeatable formula to use for your midgame rotations to all corners of the map. Get a bunch of reps in scrims & zone wars so that the endgame "slows down" for you and your decision-making stays a step ahead. Remember that a battle royale is half-shooter and half-chess match, and don't neglect either side of that equation.

New player tips?

Howdy!

Usually I play call of duty and other fps games, decided to give Fortnite a try! It’s been a nice change of pace and the game runs great.

Got a few wins my first few matches on zero build / build. I just have a few questions.

  1. Are there any meta guns like call of duty? Or is it more so what you find is what you get?

  2. Is it “easy” because I’m starting on fresh lobbies? I’m assuming they will get more sweaty down the line 😅

  3. I’m still figuring things out! So any tips on potions, healing, etc would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you!

  1. The weapons and loot pool changes every season/chapter.Usually the meta guns are the legendary or mythic guns the bosses drop, and any exotic weapons that might exist. This season the overlord spires will drop a random exotic. And you can buy mythic weapons in the superhero room beneath the academy if your hero level is high enough.
  2. Yes, if you just started playing on a new account, the game will put you in predominantly bot lobbies until you level up between 10-20 i think. Then the game uses a SBMM to try to put you in lobbies with similar skilled players.
  3. Zero build carrying heals and movement items like shockwaves are kind of a must. Build mode still important, but you can use builds for cover, and you can't in zero build.

How to improve at Fortnite for beginners

Key Considerations for Improving at Fortnite:

  1. Build Practice: Building is crucial in Fortnite. Spend time in Creative Mode to practice building structures quickly and efficiently. Focus on ramps, walls, and 90-degree turns.

  2. Aim Training: Improve your aim by using aim training maps in Creative Mode or external aim trainers. Adjust your sensitivity settings to find what feels comfortable for you.

  3. Learn the Map: Familiarize yourself with the map, including popular landing spots, loot locations, and rotation paths. Knowing the terrain can give you a strategic advantage.

  4. Watch and Learn: Watch streams or videos from skilled players to learn strategies, building techniques, and game sense. Pay attention to their decision-making in different situations.

  5. Play with Friends: Team up with friends who are more experienced. They can provide tips, support, and constructive feedback while you play together.

  6. Stay Calm Under Pressure: Practice staying calm during fights. Panicking can lead to mistakes. Take deep breaths and focus on your strategy.

  7. Adjust Settings: Customize your game settings for optimal performance. Lower graphics settings can improve frame rates, and adjusting keybinds can enhance your building and combat efficiency.

Recommendation: Start by focusing on one aspect of the game at a time, such as building or aiming, rather than trying to improve everything at once. Set small, achievable goals for each gaming session to track your progress and build confidence. Regular practice and patience are key to improvement!
