TL;DR
Neighborhood-Specific Free Parking
Free parking in Boston is rare and varies greatly by neighborhood. Some users have mentioned that areas like Hyde Park, Mattapan, and West Roxbury might offer free parking spots [1:1]. However, these areas are not centrally located, so they may not be convenient if you need to be downtown frequently.
Park-and-Ride Facilities
For those looking to avoid the hassle of city parking, using park-and-ride facilities at MBTA stations can be a cost-effective alternative. Stations like Alewife, Riverside, Wonderland, and Braintree offer parking with easy access to public transit into the city [2:1]
[5:1]. These lots charge a daily fee (e.g., $6/day at Riverside) but are significantly cheaper than downtown parking options
[5:1].
Temporary and Short-Term Parking Solutions
If you're visiting Boston temporarily or need short-term parking, consider parking in neighborhoods like Allston/Brighton, which have stretches of free street parking. Just be mindful of street cleaning schedules [3:2]. Additionally, parking at T terminuses like Oak Grove and Wellington can provide a balance between cost and convenience
[4:3].
Adjusting Expectations
It's important to adjust expectations when it comes to parking in Boston. Many locals suggest utilizing the city's robust public transportation system rather than relying on driving and parking within the urban core [4:5]. This approach can save money and reduce stress associated with finding parking in a densely populated area.
Apps and Tools
While free parking is limited, using apps like SpotHero can help find available parking spaces, though they often come with a fee [1:3]. For shorter stays, the ParkBoston app can be useful for managing metered parking
[5:2].
A very broad question…what neighborhood? Parking in Mattapan or Hyde Park looks a lot different than parking in the South End or Fenway.
Oh, sweet summer child. The free spots are basically unicorns. It’s better for your sanity to just use SpotHero for all day parking and just feed the meter for short term.
This.
When it comes to free parking, you can wish in one hand and crap in the other, and see which one gets filled first.
You drive around until you find a spot that doesn't have a meter, isn't resident only, and doesn't have any no parking or time limit signs. Easy peasy
Make friends in different neighborhoods willing to share the info, but remember…snitches get stitches
Exactly what I did, until they moved from Allston to Eastie and made me sad.
Used to be that people were aged out of allston. Now they’re just getting priced out.
There are tons of free parking spots in Boston.
Hyde Park, Mattapan, West Roxbury, etc.
Last time I checked (7 years ago) there were some on chestnut hill ave in Brighton!
I’m traveling by car and will be visiting Boston. I’m planning to ride the subway in. What are some of the best places to park that has a larger parking lot and easy to access with the least amount of traffic. I will be coming from south Boston area but will be leaving to go north, so any place will be fine.
The ends of each T line have MBTA garages:
Counter-clockwise from upper right that’s Wonderland, Oak Grove, Alewife, Riverside, Forest Hills, and Braintree.
Oak Grove doesnt. Wellington has a TON of parking though
729 total parking spots 13 accessible spots Managed by Keolis Commuter Services
Forest Hills from the south ain’t bad, take the orange in and out
it's really cheap on weekends, was $3 for the day last time I parked there
What direction are you coming from? Alewife, Riverside, and most of the Quincy RL stops have good parking
Or Wellington coming from the north.
Please drop where you are coming from so we can help better. Put it in the post.

We need more information in order to give you a good answer.
I am moving to Boston in the near future, and ultimately will not have a car since I am moving close to downtown. I will be driving a vehicle to move some things for my apartment and will have the vehicle in the city for a few days at most. Ideally, I am looking for somewhere that it could be parked for an extended period of time (only up to a few days) since I will not need it to get around for those days. I know parking can get really expensive, and was hoping someone had some advice on where to look for such short term parking until I drive the vehicle back out of the city.
If you don't mind a short ride on the T to get to it, There are stretches of Comm. Ave in Allston/Brighton that have free street parking. Just make sure to take note of the days where there's street sweeping.
This was my secret before I actually moved in to the city. Lots of free parking around Shawmut on the red line too.
Boston is a huge city. You could easily drive from one side to the other side in an hour. It could help us if you tell us where in Boston you want to park.
Huge isn’t the word I’d use lol
Brighton to Eastie or Hyde Park... that takes a while without traffic. Most consider Boston everything between the river and BMC
Thanks for asking about moving to Boston. Based on the information given, we suggest that you move to the Seaport. Please check the sidebar for visitor information. Hello everyone,
I am in Boston almost 3 days a week and I am always paying for parking (usually SpotHero) and I am really being drained financially because of it. I don't want to go into details, but basically by car is my only way into the City and I am wondering if natives of Boston have any tricks/hacks as to how to find free parking in Boston. From other online forums it seems like it isn't real, but I am really hoping someone here can prove that wrong. Let me know, thanks!
A lot of people park at the T terminuses (Alewife and Oak Grove are two I’ve done myself) and with traffic a lot of the time it’s just as fast.
Park at Encore and take the shuttle into Chinatown
This is probably going to get downvoted but you are living somewhere that is different from what you are used to and you need to adjust your expectations and way of life, not the other way around. If you are from somewhere else in the US you are in a mindset of driving wherever you need to go, including in the urban core. That isn’t realistic here unless you have thousands of extra dollars to pay for parking. You need to make use of the transit system and the many parking garages it offers outside the urban core.
Free parking not really a thing any more. Park at a T station to save some money.
Hello,
I plan to visit Boston for about a week from NY and was wondering about parking. I plan to stay in a hostel, but the hostel’s parking option seems relatively expensive $30/night (and doesn’t have in and out options).
I heard that parking at a faraway station and taking the train in is a good option. Which stations are good for this? Do I pay for a week or renew every day when it expires? If the latter case, how is renewal done? (E.G do I need to go back to the station?) Also, would I need a car in Boston or is the train system good enough to get around? Thanks!
Get the ParkBoston app... its useful for shorter stays.
>shorter stays.
2 hours per block.
Riverside! It's at the end of the green line (D), parking is $6/day and it will cost you about $2.50 (or whatever the per-trip subway fare is these days) to get into the city. I parked there during the week a couple of months ago and the lot was almost empty, since many folks still are not commuting. You can renew via the parking app.
You absolutely do not need a car in Boston (especially if you are staying at the HI hostel downtown). It's extremely walkable/bikeable/transit-friendly. Just leave the car at Riverside.
Thanks for the tip! Do you know if this also works in the Alewife station? I saw that it’s a bit closer to Boston downtown than riverside.
It does, although Alewife is $9/day weekday vs $6/day weekday at Riverside. I'm wary of the Alewife garage because it is somewhat famously falling apart...that said, they've done some repairs since 2018 and lots of people park there on the reg and are totally fine. So, your call.
You will likely find this comprehensive guide to parking at T stations useful.
Here’s a list of all station parking rates
If you want to park a little closer, the garage next to Wellington station (but not the lot) is $5/day on the top floors. But if you're coming from NY, riverside is probably more on your way.
Wonderland is also an option. At the end of the blue line which is way quicker than the green if your hostel is in downtown. Think it’s $6 a day too.
Might be kind of out of the way though, as it’s northeast of Boston.
Keep the car out of the city and walk/ride the T. If ur doing things outside the city get the wheels. South/N. Shore or cape would require the car.
Boston + Cambridge are the most walkable cities in the county.
DON’T bring it. You will regret it
Going to Fenway park tomorrow, looking for suggestions on parking garages. Thank you!!!
I Park at Riverskde
Meter in Brookline
Museum of fine arts
I usually just park at the prudential center garage and walk the 20mins or so to the stadium. It’s only $25 if you scan your game ticket after you scan your parking ticket when you leave
Do you need to reserve ahead of time?
Nope
Highly suggest not driving. It's more hassle than it's worth
Found out this random Boston parking LPT today specific to the hospital district - if you donate blood at Children’s, they’ll give you a pass to cover the cost of your parking for the entire day in their garages. Great hack if you need to park in that area for a couple hours in exchange for a quick 15 mins of your time. In related news - Children’s Hospital is in desperate need of blood donations this time of year. They have over 100 appointments open in the next week. Even if you don’t need the parking, please consider popping over there for a few minutes to help out!
The Children’s donation center is great! I do doubles there whenever I can and they keep me very well fed and comfy throughout the process (takes 45-60min vs the usual 15min for whole blood)
MGH also has a donation center that validates parking (though IMO, their space is nowhere near as nice as Children’s)
As an aside, I highly recommend doubles. You can donate every 16wks and still be at your max amount of donations. And since it’s an apheresis donation you don’t really lose all that much fluid - if anything I often feel better walking out than walking in. Plus you get to eat Tums like SweetTarts.
Oh neat to know about the donation type, I’m a universal donor so keep meaning to try it out but I’ve always been a bit worried about feeling dizzy/off. Guess I’ll have to try now!
Interestingly, I gave a whole blood donation last week for the first time in years. I was really surprised by the dizziness since I never experience any for double red donations.
Definitely give it a shot! The only side-effect that I encounter is some tingling in my mouth during the plasma return (IIRC it’s the anticoagulant that causes this) - chewing on Tums during the return counteracts the tingles.
If you donate before February you can enter to win a whole month of free parking at children’s.
I’ll see y’all at work. 🫡
Do you mind dropping the link? I don’t need the parking but would love to assist
Thanks. I assumed I was ineligible because I was born and raised in England, but looks like that rule has been reviewed and I'm now able to donate. I wouldn't have known had I not read about this.
I have a pre-existing condition with cancer where I was declined one time at PVD mall blood donation kiosk. I assume I’m perma excluded.
Whereas I was donating in England, moved to Germany for 7 years, and then recently moved here. So I’ve had a 7 year gap where I was ineligible.
The Red Cross New England Blood Center at Tufts Medical (right on the Orange Line) also offers free parking , snacks, and the occasional chatchki or gift card.
I'm a 107x donor, and also volunteer there.
Boston Red Cross Blood, Platelet and Plasma Donation Center. 274 Tremont Street. Boston, MA 02116. Phone: 1-800-RED CROSS.
Ah yes, I’m wearing the ‘snowmies’ t-shirt they gave my husband (and I stole) last month at this very moment. They also give you lots of random stuff at the MGH donation center. My apartment is filled with random things like branded umbrellas.
Husband and I are moving to Salem in two weeks. We have ebikes and will likely drive to the boston proper and explore for our first weekend there. Can anyone recommend easy places to park since we’re able to bike around? Unfamiliar with parking but I remember it being pretty congested.
Personally I'd take your bikes on the commuter rail with you rather then fight through the Boston traffic/need to try and find parking. It's easy to do so on the weekends.
Avoid the drive to Boston, instead bike from Salem down through Marblehead, to Nahant and circle around the island, its an awesome ride
Hadn’t considered this but love the idea.
Scenic, flat, plenty of places along the way for a quick bite, enjoy!
Christian Herter Park, right on the Paul Dudley Bike Path: https://www.parkandpedal.org/
>Christian Herter Park,
Cool - didn't realize it had a name. I always call it Charles River Kayaking Park in my mind.
Interesting fellow, that Christian Herter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Herter
This is perfect. Thank you.
Good option with big parking lot. Part of Memorial Drive is also closed down to vehicle traffic from 11am to 7pm on weekends for recreational use. This makes some of the trip into the city easier. https://www.mass.gov/doc/riverbend-parkmemorial-drive-0/download
If you plan on stopping for lunch or equivalent, make sure you've got good locks. A cable lock has a good chance of ending in tears.
Appreciate it.
There is also a train.
Which of the gyms in the Boston area have free parking and on what terms?
Franklin location: 6pm-8pm Are there any free parking options outside (street/nearby business/ empty lots) in the late evening?
Seaport location: does the 2h parking have charging stations?
Avery fully validates a garage parking for executive members (3 hours).
You can always try to find a parking meter for other locations though.
That is good to know. Now I need to find out how much more for the executive membership lol
Chestnut Hill has free parking but I believe all the others you need to find a meter spot or have some degree of validation required. Pretty sure the garage that seaport validates has charging stations but not 100% positive.
You are so much better off driving to the closest t stop, parking there (it's like 4$ an hour) and taking the train in. That's probably the only feasible way. Brookline is famous for not allowing even their residents to park on streets for more than 2 hours or overnight
North Brookline would be defined as being near Comm Ave. There are no T stops along Comm Ave that have parking. Nor are there any T stops along Beacon St with parking.
yes there are, at tappan street to Cleveland circle there are plenty of spots in the middle of the street to pay and park, you also could utilize brookline's free 2 hour parking near there as well
Residents can park all day if they get a permit ($20 / year). Overnight parking is limited, but once you a get a spot you are guaranteed that spot till you move out ($100 / month)
How "all day" are we talking? Is this like 9-5 or like 24/7. If it's 24/7 you're gonna need to rent or buy a parking spot (will cost thousands(not cheap)). If it's 9-5 you could probably park at a green line station like Beaconsfield or Chestnut Hill and commute by train & foot for the last mile. It's also not cheap but also not that expensive maybe like 20 bucks a day. You could also just gamble on overstaying on 2h street parking moving your car as much as you can like on lunch or something. Maybe you'll get a $50 ticket per week and that amounts to $10 day not bad
Just for the work day, not 24/7. I’m considering alternatives to driving now because I didn’t realize how ridiculously hard it is to park here
Actually they are only 30$ for that ticket, which is half of Boston's price
They won't ticket you. Even if they do. Which they rarely do. It's cheaper than parking in Boston
I, unfortunately, got a ticket on my first day :( Just my luck.
You had a bad day
Some years ago the Globe reported that the most prolific city employee ticketing for parking violations preferred to work the streets with no meters and 2 hour parking. His tickets brought in $1mm+.
Park on a quiet side street you’ll probably be fine, the few times you get a ticket will be worth it. Just don’t park in the same spot each time.
Best free parking in Boston
Key Considerations for Finding Free Parking in Boston:
Neighborhoods: Some neighborhoods, like Allston, Brighton, and parts of East Boston, may have more street parking options. Research specific areas for better chances of finding free spots.
Time Restrictions: Be aware of parking regulations. Many areas have time limits or require permits. Always check street signs for restrictions to avoid fines.
Weekends and Evenings: Free parking is often more available during weekends and evenings when businesses are closed. Look for residential areas that allow free parking during these times.
Public Holidays: Some areas may have free parking on public holidays. Check local regulations for specific dates.
Park and Ride: Consider using park-and-ride facilities outside the city. You can park for free or at a low cost and take public transportation into Boston.
Recommendations:
Street Parking: Look for residential streets with no parking meters, especially in less busy neighborhoods. Always check for permit requirements.
Boston Common Garage: While not free, it offers reasonable rates and is centrally located, making it a good option if you can't find free parking.
Apps and Websites: Use parking apps like ParkBoston or SpotHero to find available parking spots and compare prices, even for free options.
By planning ahead and being aware of the regulations, you can maximize your chances of finding free parking in Boston.
