TL;DR
SpotHero
SpotHero is frequently recommended across discussions as a reliable app for securing parking in Boston. Users appreciate its ease of use and the regular promo codes sent through push notifications, which can help reduce costs [4:2]. It's particularly useful for all-day parking and can alleviate the stress of searching for free spots, which are rare in Boston
[2:3].
ParkBoston/Passport Parking
For those seeking street parking options, ParkBoston (also known as Passport Parking) is a popular choice. It allows users to pay for parking directly from their phones, although it typically limits parking to two hours [1:1]. This app is ideal for quick stops or errands downtown.
Free Parking Challenges
Finding free parking in Boston is notoriously difficult, especially in densely populated areas like the South End or Fenway [2:3]. While some neighborhoods like Hyde Park and West Roxbury might offer more opportunities
[2:1], it's generally advised to rely on apps like SpotHero for convenience and peace of mind.
Parking Near Public Transit
If you're looking to park and ride the subway, several MBTA stations offer parking facilities. Recommended locations include Alewife, Riverside, Braintree, and Wellington, each providing ample parking and easy access to public transit lines [5:2]
[5:4]. These options are particularly useful for visitors coming from outside Boston who wish to avoid city traffic.
In summary, while free parking is scarce, using apps like SpotHero and ParkBoston can simplify the process of finding and paying for parking in Boston. For those planning to use public transit, parking at MBTA stations offers a convenient alternative.
I am new here in Boston. What are the good parking apps for finding parking in Boston downtown, suburbs or train stations?
Parkwiz. Mass eye and ear lot was like 7-9$ for the day
What do you use for street parking?
Passport parking/Park boston. Its limited to 2 hours though in most cases.
Spothero.
A very broad question…what neighborhood? Parking in Mattapan or Hyde Park looks a lot different than parking in the South End or Fenway.
Oh, sweet summer child. The free spots are basically unicorns. It’s better for your sanity to just use SpotHero for all day parking and just feed the meter for short term.
This.
When it comes to free parking, you can wish in one hand and crap in the other, and see which one gets filled first.
You drive around until you find a spot that doesn't have a meter, isn't resident only, and doesn't have any no parking or time limit signs. Easy peasy
Make friends in different neighborhoods willing to share the info, but remember…snitches get stitches
Exactly what I did, until they moved from Allston to Eastie and made me sad.
Used to be that people were aged out of allston. Now they’re just getting priced out.
There are tons of free parking spots in Boston.
Hyde Park, Mattapan, West Roxbury, etc.
Last time I checked (7 years ago) there were some on chestnut hill ave in Brighton!
I'm moving to Boston soon and I'm going to have a few folks with me to help with the process. I also probably won't have my car registered yet and therefore won't be able to park in resident parking at my apartment. What resources are there to find parking lots nearby? Is there a website or app that we can use to find lots or even better, streets that allow open parking (aren't resident only)?
We're moving close to Roxbury Crossing if that helps, if you know of any specific locations near there. TIA!
Best resource I'm aware of:

When I moved back I managed to get away with street parking for a few days before registering my car and didn't get a ticket, but YMMV on that.
Thanks for asking about moving to Boston. Based on the information given, we suggest that you move to the Seaport. Please check the sidebar for visitor information. Also, please check out past moving to Boston posts to see if this question or something similar has been asked on /r/boston in the past. Also, please enjoy this wonderful video

Spot hero might help you find a paid spot.
even better, streets that allow open parking (aren’t resident only)?
Lmaooooooooooo. Drive around like everyone else. Welcome to Boston.
Thanks lol. I'm moving from rural Appalachia so pardon me for not knowing better!
Edit: originally said rural southern us but that's not true
Ok let me explain it to you then! Basically resident only parking is designed to make it as difficult as possible for non residents to park, because parking in these areas is extremely limited due to density. Non-resident parking streets are really meant for guests of residents or people who are stopping briefly. If we advertised them publicly they would be filled with people who just want to park there all the time rather than paying $$$ for a garage.
As such we keep that shit under wraps. Those streets are closely guarded secrets! Soon you’ll want to guard them too lol
What apps do people use to reserve parking spaces?
I use Spothero almost daily. If you keep the push notifications on they'll send you a promo code every week or so

I’m traveling by car and will be visiting Boston. I’m planning to ride the subway in. What are some of the best places to park that has a larger parking lot and easy to access with the least amount of traffic. I will be coming from south Boston area but will be leaving to go north, so any place will be fine.
What direction are you coming from? Alewife, Riverside, and most of the Quincy RL stops have good parking
Or Wellington coming from the north.
The ends of each T line have MBTA garages:
Counter-clockwise from upper right that’s Wonderland, Oak Grove, Alewife, Riverside, Forest Hills, and Braintree.
Oak Grove doesnt. Wellington has a TON of parking though
729 total parking spots 13 accessible spots Managed by Keolis Commuter Services
Forest Hills from the south ain’t bad, take the orange in and out
it's really cheap on weekends, was $3 for the day last time I parked there
Please drop where you are coming from so we can help better. Put it in the post.
Edited^
We need more information in order to give you a good answer.
Going to Fenway park tomorrow, looking for suggestions on parking garages. Thank you!!!
I Park at Riverskde
Meter in Brookline
I usually just park at the prudential center garage and walk the 20mins or so to the stadium. It’s only $25 if you scan your game ticket after you scan your parking ticket when you leave
Do you need to reserve ahead of time?
Nope
Museum of fine arts
Highly suggest not driving. It's more hassle than it's worth
The honest answer is that an app is most likely a business, there may be resources from your city in the form of an app. But most of the time the requirements will be posted on your city/towns department of transit pge
Any kind of bike/scooter rental app
Google maps ... and this thing called human vision
Just use your eyes.
We are men, we don't use maps.
We will hunt endlessly in person for the best parking spot
Unless you block the road with hazards waiting for someone to back out, then you lose your man card.

"Onx" is a lot better as it will also include property lines. This allows you to know the borders of private and public land, but also gives you the info of the land owner. This can allow you to go and communicate to ask permission.
Tried it. Hella awkward to use. I can’t figure out how to just turn left. Interesting though, hope it improves
Yeah seems like it's this dudes app, and it doesn't work well – or instructions are shite. Looks like Google Earth to me, anyway.
Only compatible with iPad.
Ah..I’ll try it on my iPad then.
Favorite app for scoping out parking... Doesn't show example of scoping out parking, only for Apple, shilling own app and not genuinely sharing a helpful resource.
I'll stick with Google maps satellite and street view.
Hey! Recently moved to Somerville and it’s the most amazing place I’ve ever lived but have found parking to be less than desirable.
I feel like I’m always chasing where to park to avoid street sweeping tickets. (Got 3 in the first week and now have it figured out)
I know the city has their text service but really only helps if you’re able to park in the same area and remember exactly where you park.
I’m thinking of building an app that would automatically track where you park (or at least use GPS to do a manual location mark) and send notifications about street sweeping, snow emergencies and other community info.
Would the people of Somerville find this helpful? Any recommendations or problems you’d consider?
Most people park overnight in the same area, and the City alert system does a great job of sending reminders. Not sure how useful it would be to most people.
Welcome to Somerville!!
Yea, this feels like a solution to something that is already solved. The GPS wouldn't solve the "which side of the street" issue since GPS isn't reliably that accurate (especially on the myriad of small one-way side streets in Somerville).
Snow emergencies are city-wide so you don't need to have GPS tracking for that. Again, given that you can't reliably mark which side of the street one is parked on, it wouldn't help for the park-even/park-odd problem with snow emergencies.
One thing to think about: parking would generally cost over $100/mo if you wanted off-street parking so getting a couple tickets per month is kinda the cost of doing business. I know, no one likes a ticket. I have friends that say they'd gladly pay $200/mo rather than get 1 $50 ticket.
I'd also say that the app you're proposing already exists. 1) Apple Maps will track where your car is parked. 2) Somerville sends out an alert. 3) You open Apple Maps and see where your car is parked. I'm sure Android has a similar thing.
If you live near a couple different street cleaning areas, you might get more alerts than necessary, but I also wouldn't want to leave it to your app - what if it didn't mark where my car was parked this time and I didn't get an alert? If Apple Maps doesn't mark where I'm parked, I'd get the alert, open Maps, and see no "Parked Car" marker and I'd know I'd need to check manually. With your app, if it didn't mark where I was parked, I'd never get an alert.
I think after a few weeks, people generally know where they're parking and the alerts work well. Your phone probably tracks where you're parked already so you can just pull up maps and see where you're parked when you receive the alert.
I think this is incredibly well thought out feedback, thank you!
I think the reliability of the marking is def a tech concern both from side of the road and “marking” reliability.
Theres also the hurdle of if it provides enough extra value over setting the automated alerts or memorizing all of your normal parking spots. Which seems like it may not.
The last piece that’s interesting is when I was getting my parking pass the gentleman that helped me out mentioned that a lot of people just leave their car and see the tickets as “cost of doing business.” I’m far too cheap to do that lol.
Also cataloging and keeping up-to-date the street cleaning schedules would be arduous. I don't believe there are any public databases of the actual schedule.
It should be pretty easy to just know which streets near your place sweep on which days - I don't think there's a need for an app for that
Every time I park which is mainly on my own street. I get out and walk over to the sign, look at it and go ya street sweeping is not tomorrow (I've lived on the street for years and still don't know what side is what). Sometimes those weird months get me but even then that's only seldom.

So ya I think its pretty easy to do without an app.
Seriously - this app idea is already solved by the fact that there's literally signs on every street telling you when sweeping is
I would totally use this! Often when I move my car for street sweeping, I end up on a different street entirely, with a distinct sweeping schedule. It may be tricky to automatically get the right side of the street, but even just having a Google-style map of schedules would be nice.
Awesome! I’ll keep you posted then on it.
Based on other responses it may be isolated to certain locations. Since moving here 2 weeks ago I’ve had to park in 6 separate street sweeping zones based upon availability. Realistically I’ll probs have to rotate between 8 zones on a somewhat regular basis.
At least in Somerville, you only get a ticket on street cleaning day. Over in Cambridge, they tow your car!
>Over in Cambridge, they tow your car!
AND give you a ticket :)
Except this year they delayed street sweeping without giving a specific date, then towed everyone's cars with no notice.
Push it into the harbor
Yes - But don’t pollute the harbor.
Put it in Elmo’s pool.
I’m not sure I want a massive lithium ion battery interacting with the contents of the harbor…
That would probably be the least worrisome thing in the harbor, but I see your point
lol they probably didn’t even plan on parking it probably broke down
No, I work right over there and drive by it all the time.
Do they even break down? Or just shut off😂
Well I mean it is a shit car that isn’t doing well, but we’re mostly upset about it’s Nazi CEO destroying our country, and this particular asshole owner who is illegally parking.
Report it then watch it be ticketed while getting an ice cream from the hood milk bottle.
Oh I like this. Usually I’m team mind your business, but reporting Teslas any time they do anything remotely illegal sounds fun.
You’re in absolutely the perfect spot to address that issue. Do what your forefathers did and make T in the harbor.
We don’t want to pollute the harbor with that trash. It should be scrapped
