TL;DR LG is widely recommended for reliability and performance in front-load washers, with Speed Queen and Electrolux also being strong contenders. Avoid Samsung due to reliability concerns.
LG Washers
LG consistently receives high praise across discussions for their front-load washers. Users have reported long-term satisfaction with LG models, citing their durability and effective cleaning capabilities [1:1]
[1:5]
[2:3]. LG washers are noted for using less water, causing less clothing damage, and providing better cleaning results compared to top loaders
[3:1]
[3:6]. While some users suggest avoiding the fanciest models with unnecessary features, LG's mid-range options are considered reliable and affordable
[2:4]
[5:1].
Speed Queen and Electrolux
Speed Queen is often mentioned as a top choice for those willing to invest more money, known for its robustness and longevity [1:3]
[1:6]. However, it may exceed the budget of $800
[5:2]. Electrolux is another brand that garners positive reviews, particularly for its front-load machines, although some users have reservations about the lack of a user-accessible drain filter
[1:6].
Reliability Concerns
Samsung washers have been criticized for reliability issues, with several users recommending against them based on personal experiences [1]
[5:2]. The consensus seems to favor LG for mass-market washers, with GE and Electrolux following behind
[5:3].
General Considerations
Front-load washers are generally preferred over top-loaders due to their efficiency, gentler treatment of clothes, and superior cleaning ability [3:6]
[3:12]. However, they require slightly more maintenance, such as regular cleaning cycles and keeping the door open between washes to prevent mold
[3:5]
[3:7]. Despite this, many users find the benefits outweigh these minor inconveniences.
My Samsung washer started having issues in less than 3 years. In market to purchase a new front load washer. Which company has the best washer to offer that won’t fail on me as quickly as Samsung did?
LG has had the best washing machines for a very very long time.
LG top-load large capacity here, had it 4 or 5 years. It's the type with a disc style agitator. It's fairly basic but so far, so good. It can be a stretch for a shorter person to reach the bottom of the tub, but it washes well and hasn't had any problems.
Speed Queen is the best machine, but a bit pricey in front load.
Outside of that. Electrolux is my top pick in front load machines
I got the Whirlpool WTW4816FW from Lowe’s, and it has been fine. Do not overload it, and read the manual before using it. Otherwise, if you have the money for it, get a Speed Queen TV2000WN
If price is no consideration, Speed queen. If not, according to most ratings and reviews, LG. Personally I liked the Electrolux front load 7 series; however they don't have a user accessible drain filter which makes me pause.
LG makes great front loaders!
I’d vote for an LG. Just don’t get the fanciest ones with all the bs options.
Yeah I think I'm leaning towards LG. As few options as I can.
LG 3470 go's on sale for $700. a few times per year.
Watch this video. https://youtu.be/jmtLeB4ZplU
Everyone has very different ideas of what is affordable, but I’d get a Miele if you can. You can probably pick up a 7kg for about the same price as an LG 10kg.
If that’s too expensive where you are, LG’s cheaper models are good too.
Moving soon and just doing some searching for good appliances. I have never once even considered a front load washer, but I’ve seen several posts here recommending LG front loaders, never anything else.
Is there a reason everyone is recommending front loaders?
Pretty much every single objective, professional review out there shows front loaders cleaning better while being gentler on clothes. I love my front loader.
I just got a new LG front loader to replace my old Kenmore top loader and I'm honestly shocked at how much better it cleans my clothes. The cycle is definitely longer, but the clean is significantly better.
Exactly. We have used front load washers in our homes for the last 30 years. I won’t own anything else.
If you want a top load, get one with agitator, ones without agitator suck, can never get the load to balance properly.
This is true. My parents finally went back to a top loader after being frustrated by a front loader that didn’t clean as well. Ended up with a top loader with no agitator and a “smart” water sensor (basically not enough water to get things clean). Washed a pillow sham with a small stain on it that should have very easily come out, but didn’t. Took it home to my top loader I bought in 1997, and it came right out. My theory is that it didn’t get wet or agitated enough to come out.
I will always buy top loaders with agitators based on my many experiences with front loaders and/or non-agitators, of which the aforementioned is only one.
Tell your parents this trick, I did wonders for us with a agitator free top loader that wouldn’t get a damn thing clean.
Basically, you are going to trick the washer into using a lot more water. Start a load, let it fill. Then, power it off for one or two minutes. Not pause, power off. Then turn it back on and start the load again. The washer will sense the weight of the water that’s already in there and think the load is a much larger size than it actually is, and therefore dispense more water, which adds to the water that is already in there. Then you have enough water to get shit clean. Stupid, I know. But it did work for us. They may or may not want to engage the extra water button during these fills, too.
Amen! And spend more time having the cycle drain and refill to auto balance, only to unbalance drain and refill all over. 30 minute waah turns into 3.5 hours.
Depending on water hardness, running a clean cycle 1 a month to once every 3 months. Removing moisture after use and leaving the door open between washes. It's not a ton of maintenance. But it's more than a top loader.
The only bad thing about a front loader is they don't like being in humid wet basements. Those are the people that complain about the smell in their LG front loader.
had top loaders for 25 years, front loaders for the last 25.
less water usage
less clothing snags/damage
dryer clothes before drying
supposed energy savings
I have no idea of the current build quality but my LG front loader has been abused by a neglectful, multi*-*pet-owning family of 5 and has been flawless for the past 12 years.
Don't like their fridges, but i think ol' Lucky Goldstar makes a good front loading washer.
I really hate the focus on less water usage. I understand they are necessary in certain locations, but to cripple the effectiveness of all washers is just nonsense. Water has never been a concern for me. It’s the free-est, most abundant resource I have.
Because front loaders are simply better. They require a little more maintenance. But are far better machines.
My experience is they all eventually leak. I've replaced gaskets to fix the issue before, but Just wondering if anyone can recommend a front load washer that's very reliable? Does it exist?
I have an LG-made Kenmore and have no issues.
Before that (ex still uses) I had a Maytag. The only problem that one ever had was mildew when she wouldn't let it dry out before closing the door.
None of the front loaders leak is the general experience.
I have asked this question on my personal facebook page where I have over 1000 "friends". Almost all of them replied that their front load leaked at some point. There were some that said they never had an issue tho. Makes me wonder if they said that they owned LG. I'll have to try to find that post later.
My 23 year old Kenmore front loader just died 2 days ago. No mold problems, and we were lax about cleaning/caring for it. Left the door open after use and that's about it. It may have leaked a few times but may have just been probably the drain hose spraying when the utility sink was full and draining slowly. Anyone know who made the Kenmores in 2000?
Our Speed Queen has been going on for the past 10 years, with no leaks and no problems.
This video may help.
17 years and no problems. Certainly no leaks and no black mold.
So I’ve read the many Reddit posts about the best front-load washing machines, and the top recommendations always seem to be "Speed Queen" or "Miele." While I’m sure these are excellent brands, I’m looking for something in a more mid-range price point.
LG (we've had our front load set for 14 yrs). Also, Electrolux is often recommended and a CR best buy (LG ranked #1). Speed Queen will put you over the $800 budget, and their drum sizes (both top & front load) are small in comparison. As others stated, stay clear of Samsung.
LG is ranked number one for mass market washer/ dryers--They really have their s*** together. I believe GE is number two followed by electrolux. It's not really close however. Laundry is the one thing LG does well. LG refrigerators are horrible however. There's not just one, but at least two class action lawsuits about compressor issues. There's a third class action suit against the water/freezer in the door not working.
All the LG front load washers are basically the same. They all have the same guts and internals. The only difference is the bells and whistles and the control panel.
Yes, please buy an LG, especially the matching dryer. It keeps us very busy.
LG has turned things around on the refrigerator front. Got my parents one last year and it's quietly purring along with zero issues.
And, hopefully lightning doesn't strike me down in retribution for too much good luck, we picked up a Samsung bespoke refrigerator from Costco last November. Zero issues, very quiet, lots of ice.
Check YouTube for Ben’s Appliances & Junk as well as Yale Appliances, Boulevard Home, and Consumer Reports.
I think all roads lead to LG, but they’re the experts.
This is the way.
I just got a 5.0 LG front loader for $799. From a local store. In box recently discontinued model.
I’m happy with my LG pair.
If you’re looking for something “mid range”,you can’t go wrong with LG laundry. Don’t overpay for features though.
WISH LIST-WOULD LIKE IT TO MEET AS MNAY OF THESE AS IT CAN….. -Top Loader -No known leaking issues with that brand or model (IMPORTANT) -Simple/Minimal-prefer nobs and dials to digital. -Options Include: additional rinse, delayed start, gentle, quick, regular, bulky/heavy duty. -Large capacity (can fit king size quilts or duvet insert in). -Quiet -Reliable for 5 years -Good balancing -Gets clothes clean (open to agitator, but not sure if king size blankets will fit??) -Easy/Reasonable cost to repair -Low chance of mold (Very important) -Good quality, but don’t need it to last 20+ years (will be moving at some point in next 5 years and will not be able to take with me) -Large capacity 5.0 or larger preferred (fit king duvet insert) -Price is “somewhat” flexible
Open to ideas/suggestions on what else I may be missing when looking for a washing machine. Thank you.
Consider getting a frontloader, they wash much better.
Will never get a front loader…,massive mold issues in door seal.
This isn’t really true. I had mold issues with my first one. Replaced the gasket and started using a spray that inhibits that. Haven’t had a problem since. At the moment I am using a top loader and I can’t wait for my clothes to be clean again.
Everybody has front loaders here in Europe and mold issues are fairly rare. Just make sure to leave the door open and run a hot wash every once in a while.
Mold forms on top loaders too. You just can't see it unless you take it apart as it is on the outer drum.
Leave the door open a bit and dry the gasket
Most new top loaders have fallen from quality, so just go with a front loader, and specifically the LG WM4000HBA, and pair it with the WD300CB sidekick. Hope this helps 🙏🏿
I am not a fan of front loaders….major mold issue in door gasket here in the climate I live (very hot, wet, and humid).
Can you tell I am used to older washing machines? This is how they used to be. I guess you could call it my “wish list”….LOL!😂 I made an edit and said “wish list”….wanting as many on it as possible.
There’s a basic Amana or basic GE. People are saying speed queen and I agree but they are expensive.
Thank you….We have a GE and it has been nothing but issues and they did not get good ratings…consumer reports or from repair techs. Amana got an ok rating, but does not have the capacity we need.
Dang. Then I’d go speed queen. Most basic model.
I need to buy a new washing machine. Can anyone recommend brands to consider and avoid? It needs to be a front loading one.
LG are great washers acording to consumer report.
More info here. Its pdf https://reprints.theygsgroup.com/cr/reprints/LG_FrontLoad_Ratings.pdf
I like my Whirlpool except for the load and go detergent dispenser. It's a bad idea. You put a lot of liquid detergent in so you can just load clothes and go. But it's just going to evaporate and dry up if you don't use it every day.
In reality, you only need 1-2 tBS of detergent per load. Those load and goes use too much detergent. Too much detergent can leave residue on your clothes.
Lg or Electrolux. Make sure you have access to service for those brands in your area before you buy.
LG.
Speed Queen or Whirlpool Duet. I just changed another LG drain pump and the washer wasn’t even 2years old.
The Frigidaire wasn't the fanciest, didn't even have a detergent-dedicated compartment, but she was the best. She served my family incredibly well and kept our clothes clean. But, she must retire now.
Anyways, I am looking for a top-loading washer. I hear nothing but horror stories about Samsung and LG lmao
Those old machines were well built. The only thing today I would recommend would be Speed Queen. All metal internals, no plastic, an extra heavy suspension not found in the others, and at least double the weight load.
Top load TC series, or the FF series Front load. Our front load is now past 10 years without problems.
I agree. I know friends and family who have gone thru 3-5 washer in the span of 20 years. I am genuinely hurting LOL.
I absolutely agree! When my Kenmore kicks the bucket this is what I will buy.
Get the bare-bones Amana top load washer.
My 5 year old whirlpool front load washer just stopped working. The repairs are more than it's worth. We are looking at new front loads. Anyone have any thoughts on LG. The one place we went to was really pushing the WN4000hwa and I see it's on consumer reports but I'm concerned about so many reviews saying it has an awful smell that doesn't go away. Other places seem to be recommend recommending GE, but I think it's going to be tight in our space. I have to order today so any advice is welcome love or hate for brands/certain washers
The LG repairman who was just at my house told me that he’d take a Whirlpool over LG any day.
A lot of people on this subreddit love LG.
The bad smell is typically from bad owners not leaving the door and drawer open, to air out after a wash.
If you let it air out then there will be no bad smell, simples.
Is there a sub Reddit on it? I was concerned about some reviews having chemical smells when new
Hello,I have this exact model except in black.
This washer is a tank!, wonderful machine.
I have had this washer for several years and have absolutely no regrets or any smells.
As the other person said, leave the door ajar and pull the tray out a little.
It has a cleaning cycle where you put bleach in the bleach dispenser and run the cycle which helps keep the washer clean and in good condition.
Following these steps I have never had one trace of any smell.
Like any machine that uses water, if you take care of it, clean it out and air it out you won't have any smells.
Good luck
Did you have any issues with smell when you first got it? I saw a lot of concerns about smell before it was used and clothes smelling like chemicals
Not at all, because it either said in the instructions or I had read it someplace to run a couple of cleaning cycles with bleach and then run a cycle with some old towels or rags or something and a small amount of detergent which helps with the smell.
Like almost everything else, refrigerators, dishwashers, any type of new appliance including new cars there is going to be a smell for a little while but after doing the above I never noticed any major smells and if there was it went away very very quickly.
The only BIFL front loader is the Speed Queen FF7 but it's $2200. You can find used/refurbs available for around $550+.
The LG is not BIFL but more like 7-10 years.
If you want a front loader, you must do the following.
Always leave the washer door ajar when done. If you are the type of person who wants to close the door, then you will get mold and you should skip buying a front loader.
Only use 1-2 tablespoons of detergent MAX. If you are the type of person who wants to put a capfull of detergent, then you will get mold and skip buying a front loader.
Run the cleaning cycle every 20-30 washers (~ or once a month). Use citric acid + oxyclean (see how to clean a washing machine on the YouTube channel Ben's Appliances and Junk).
I need recommendations for a new washer dryer set. I am getting my basement & laundry room remodeled and the plan is to put a countertop across them.
I currently have a top load LG washing machine I HATE that came with the house. It gives me an ‘unbalanced load’ signal if I look at it wrong even on ‘bulky’ and the appliance repair guy has looked at it and found no problems with legs, balance etc.
Please share what washing machine & dryer you love! I’m willing to buy nice quality if it will really last and truly get my clothes clean. So far I do not like my experiences with High Efficiency washers. I do not live in a climate that is prone to drought or water shortages, and the HE at my old house (same metro area) never seemed to get my clothes clean. We do not have hard water either. I care about the environment but I’m willing to compensate in other ways. It’s not energy saving IMHO if I end up washing something twice.
Thanks in advance!
I understand the challenges ( and frustration) of washing things twice. I recently had to replace my washer (and was going to replace the dryer while I was at it). I was leaning toward a speed Queen. In fact, I was saying for years that that’s what I would get when the time came.
I ended up doing a 180 and bought the GE Profile washer/dryer combo.I’ve only had it for about 3 weeks, but so far, I’m in love.
I had to reconfigure my laundry room (it’s a little taller), but overall takes up less space. My clothes definitely come out very clean!
How is the GE profile? I keep hearing a lot about it these days
I've got a GE Profile top loader that we've only had for a week replacing a rusting apart Samsung that came with the house. Can't speak to longevity but it does a nice job so far.
So far I love it; admittedly, I was skeptical about it (to the point that I wanted to make sure I could return it within a short span if it wasn’t working for me).
So far (knock on wood); I don’t have any complaints. It cleans extremely well, and it is very user friendly, it is very quiet, and the drum is very large.
I had an older top loader with agitator and in my 2nd home have a newish (4-5 years) Maytag top loader and matching dryer. The level of clean is leagues above the other 2. I don’t miss the cycles that keep increasing (on the Maytag) to balance itself.
I’ve read some reviews with people stating it takes a long time. While it does take a little longer, it’s nothing that is inconvenient or would be a deal breaker. I just did a heavy load; had it set for pre wash, extra dry, etc. it took about 3 hours. The convenience of not worrying about wet clothes/towels in the washer is definitely worth it for me!
NOT Samsung. I fell for that twice. The WHOLE DRUM broke one day. I was not washing boulders.
My maytag top loader is serving me fine
WOW! good to know!
Miele. Nothing else comes close in terms of being effective, gentle on clothes and lasting for ages.
I have 2017 top loading Maytag "commercial' it's not ' commercial ' quality lol and dryer. I have been really hard on it though. A least one to 2 loads per day. It has has 2 4 6 hours buttons like the dishwasher which I like instead of running while bathing . l I think the gain beads maybe an issue.they melt and that is why the latch wouldn't open. Once or twice. The bleach hong does flow correctly iit just leaves a goob of white bleach all over the towels
I run the affirm cleaning tablets or powder as soon as the light comes on.
But it takes 60 to 90 min to go thru wash cycle...
It gave up and just stopped draining water out and there is molded water smell in the bottom.
It still washes them .so I hang the ones I wring out myself. I am a housewife and I fix everything but my back is out or id have a new 24.99 drain pump installed.
Which is what the lady who answered the Maytag repair said. She told me by the time i pay repair guy it was $100 per hour. Seriously, she told to just watch some more
YouTube and I was so happy she has that Much confidence in me!!! Hahaha
I didn't know if a small sock or The actual Maytag drain pump is only 24.99 from Maytag site. But the Maytag dryer door has been held together since 2019 with pink and green and grey duct tape whatever is handy.. The water won't drain out the washer or spi dry . It wants too.though and I watched the drain pump and the actual
10 yr limited warranty. The electrical touch board came out at 3 Months. Repair guy said, good luck. It may last another 2 years...Both top loads . And the matching dryer I don't know why they call it "commercial" lol
I got it 2017 and called and they said yes it was covered for drain pump/ motor or belt. But for them to send repair man he charged 198.00 just to show up. Basically repair is 500. I need 3 cycles, hard and fast with hot water on my husbands work clothes. I need a cycle that say " wash the heck out of your blankets comforter and sheets with hot water. And one for my white shirts!
.
I don't have advice because I found this thread because I'm also looking for a new washer and dryer but I can't believe how short warranties are for washers and dryers! 1 year? Come on!
best front load washer
Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Front Load Washer:
Capacity: Look for a washer with a capacity that suits your household needs. Generally, 4.5 to 5.0 cubic feet is ideal for families, allowing you to wash larger loads efficiently.
Energy Efficiency: Check for Energy Star certification to ensure you're choosing a model that saves on water and electricity costs. This can lead to significant savings over time.
Spin Speed: Higher spin speeds (around 1200-1400 RPM) extract more water from clothes, reducing drying time and energy usage.
Wash Cycles and Features: Look for a variety of wash cycles (e.g., quick wash, delicate, heavy-duty) and features like steam cleaning, sanitizing options, and smart technology for remote control and monitoring.
Noise Level: Consider models with noise-reduction technology if your laundry area is near living spaces. Look for decibel ratings (below 60 dB is generally quiet).
Reliability and Warranty: Research brands known for reliability and check the warranty offered. A longer warranty can provide peace of mind.
Recommendation: The LG WM4000HWA is highly rated for its performance, energy efficiency, and large capacity (4.5 cu. ft.). It features a variety of wash cycles, steam cleaning, and smart technology for convenience. Another excellent option is the Samsung WF45R6100AW, which also offers great performance, a large capacity, and a user-friendly interface. Both models are well-reviewed for their reliability and effectiveness in cleaning.
