TL;DR
Durability and Longevity
When it comes to washing machines that last, Speed Queen is frequently mentioned as a top choice. Users report owning Speed Queen machines for over a decade without issues, highlighting their robust construction and efficient spin cycles which aid in faster drying times [2:1],
[2:5]. Miele is another brand praised for its durability, with some users having machines that have lasted nearly 20 years
[3:3].
Performance and Features
Electrolux and LG are noted for their reliable performance, especially in front-load models. They offer excellent cleaning capabilities and are generally quiet during operation [3:4],
[3:6]. While Samsung offers low noise and power consumption, some users report dissatisfaction with its cleaning efficiency and reliability
[5:4].
Budget Considerations
For those on a tighter budget, brands like Bosch and Haier provide good value. Bosch is often recommended for its effective cleaning and build quality, though it can be on the pricier side [5:1]. Haier is noted for offering longer warranties, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers
[5:3].
Service and Repair
Before purchasing, it's wise to consider serviceability. Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana are highlighted for their ease of repair and availability of parts [4:4]. It's suggested to check with local repair shops about service options for your chosen brand to avoid long wait times for parts, especially for brands like Samsung and LG which may take weeks for parts to arrive from overseas
[4:4].
Top Load vs. Front Load
The choice between top load and front load can depend on personal preference and specific needs. Front load washers are generally more efficient in terms of water and detergent usage and are gentler on clothes [5:2]. However, some users prefer top loaders for their simplicity and ease of use
[4:5].
Hey, what is the best, affordable, effective washing machine in the market right now or that you have used and it worked really well for you?
If you live by yourself, the Hisense 6kg front loader for 35k is good. It works like a charm and it not too noisy or use a lot of water. Make sure to get the inlet tap (500-1k) as well to control water flow when it’s not in use.
I've been using haier for a while now. Bought it at 26k. Can't regret it. Washes even my duvets properly.
Thank you for this. How many kgs? Washer and dryer?
10.5kg washer 7kg drier.
Affordable is relative. What’s the budget you’re working with? That’ll give you actionable answers.
Great question. My budget is 25-30k. I'm also looking for effectiveness - you know water use and less noise. Do you have any leads?
As you work on the clothes, I could work on your sofas. I offer cleaning services at 500 per seat.
Well, any leads on washing machines?
I need my 5 seater and bed washed. How much? And I hope you do a good job
you can get as cheap as 15k and the price increases with the quality of the wash
😇 I am also good with the sofa cleaning.
I'm sure you can get better offers now. I bought mine a while ago. It's not a year old.
Hi everyone,
I have to buy a washing machine for home (8kg) There are 2 of us and we would like to buy a washing machine that is resistant and will last over time. I've checked various sites, but I always find conflicting opinions. We definitely don't need WI-FI, but it must be CLASS A Except MIELE (which costs a fortune), which one do you recommend?
Speed Queen is the best I’ve had
Whatever you do, do not buy a Maytag or whirlpool washer and or drier. My goodness it was the worst mistake we made. Quality has gone way down and issues ever since. Try LG or a Samsung
just bought a whirlpool, first real load, already looking to return it for a replacement! it stays full of water, no matter how many rinse and spin cycles i run
Do not try Samsung, and if you have to try LG, front load only.
This seems like an obvious question with a washing machine, but what differentiates a top load from a front load dryer? Is it whether the door opens down or to the side? I haven’t seen any dryers that actually load from the top of the machine. TIA
My Samsung washer is the worst appliance I've ever bought. I'm reading posts here now to research its replacement it after just 3.5 years
Agree. I bought a top loader back in 2022 pretty disappointed.
As a technician, people are shocked when i say this. Since 2021 they moved a lot of their manufacturing and parts to china.
Quality is garbage, and after sales warranty even worse to deal with.
Speed Queen. Don't even bother looking at anything else. Costs twice as much but will last 20-30 years.
Speed Queen.
Top Loader: Bedding? Yes. King size comforter? No.
Front Loader: Unknown. I defer to others.
Definitely uses plenty of water. Washes awesome. Guess its been 5 years now. No issues. Clean clothes. Would order another Speed Queen without hesitation.
Speed Queen. 14 years old and zero problems so far. Same as the dryer. This washer spins super fast so the clothes dry really fast
After 12 years, my Bosch washer died. I need help with choosing a reliable brand. There's so many brands on the market, that I don't even know where to start. Any recommendations would be great as far as brands that are solid, and brands to run from. Please help me!
Miele all the way. Have mine nearly 20 years. Its indestructible
Which do you have? I have a W4840 and T9800. They are working fine but I might look for a heat pump machine.
I have a w526. Has never given any trouble thankfully. Its delicate cycle is brilliant. My sister even washed her silk wedding dress in it and it came out perfectly.
Also have a Miele washer and dryer. Amazing machines. Very quiet.
Most reliable brands of front load washers are Electrolux and LG
This is a great video about the reliability of front load washers. (Starts at 12:15) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oC9PufP0UtI&t=789s&pp=ygUbYmVzdCB3YXNoZXJzIGJlbnMgYXBsaWFuY2Vz
We have Electrolux. Love them. So quiet. Cleans amazing
I just got an Electrolux set and they seem great. Amazingly better for cleaning than my old ones. Not sure how the longevity will be as I’ve only had them a few months. But they seem solidly built.
I recently got one and love it. Family of 4 but kids are still little. A full load on normal setting is rated for 17.6 lbs of dry laundry.
Speed Queen
I know. I definitely got my money's worth out of that machine.
When I retired my last one the repair man told me 9 years is about average lifespan. That one was a 19 year old Samsung. I replaced it with a speed queen.

Okay so I'm finally at that point in my adulting journey where I need to buy my own washing machine and I'm completely overwhelmed by all the reviews for the best washing machines out there. I've been living in apartments with either communal laundry or included appliances for the past decade, and now that I bought my first house, I suddenly have this empty laundry room staring at me and no clue what to put in it.
I spent last weekend at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Best Buy just staring at walls of washing machines like they were abstract art. Front load, top load, agitators, no agitators, smart features, steam cleaning, allergen cycles... when did washing clothes become this complicated? The sales people were nice but each one pushed whatever brand they got commission on, so that wasn't super helpful either.
My budget is flexible, probably anywhere from $600 to $1500 for the washer (I'll worry about the dryer later). I don't need anything super fancy but I also don't want to cheap out and have it break in two years. My main priorities are reliability, decent capacity (it's just me and my partner but we do tons of laundry somehow), and preferably something that doesn't sound like a jet engine taking off. Our laundry room is right next to the living room so noise matters.
I've been reading reviews online until my eyes blur and honestly they're making things worse. Every single model seems to have reviews saying it's either the best thing ever or it broke after six months and flooded their house. Consumer Reports wants me to pay for a subscription just to see their rankings, and YouTube reviews all feel like they're sponsored content.
From what I've gathered so far, everyone seems to have strong opinions about top load vs front load. My mom swears by her old-school top loader with the agitator that she's had for 20 years, but my sister says front loaders clean better and use less water. Then there's the whole debate about whether the smart features are actually useful or just another thing to break. Do I really need my washing machine to send notifications to my phone? Probably not, but also... maybe?
I'm also seeing a lot of mixed things about brands. Like apparently Samsung and LG make good washers but their customer service is supposedly terrible if something goes wrong. Whirlpool and Maytag are supposedly reliable but boring. Speed Queen is built like a tank but costs as much as one too. And don't even get me started on all these new brands I've never heard of popping up on Amazon.
The capacity thing is confusing too. They measure in cubic feet but what does 4.5 cubic feet actually mean in terms of real laundry? Can I fit a comforter in there? What about all my towels at once? I have no frame of reference for this stuff.
Energy efficiency is something I care about too, both for environmental reasons and because our utility bills are already ridiculous. But it's hard to tell if spending extra on an Energy Star model actually saves money in the long run or if it's just marketing.
So Reddit, what's actually the best washing machine out there right now? What do you have, what do you love, what do you hate, and what should I absolutely avoid? Really hoping to get some real world experiences here because I'm tired of reading marketing copy disguised as reviews.
Appliance technician here with 20 years experience, and I'm going to tell you something that will save you hundreds of dollars: the "best" washing machine is the one you can actually get serviced when it breaks. Before you buy ANY washer, call three local appliance repair shops and ask: 1) Do you service this brand? 2) How quickly can you get parts? 3) What's the typical repair cost? You'll be shocked how many say they won't touch Samsung or LG because parts take 3-4 weeks to arrive from Korea. Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana (all same company) have parts warehouses nationwide - I can get parts same day or next day. Speed Queen has excellent parts support but fewer techs know how to work on them. GE is hit or miss depending on your area. From a repair perspective, here's what breaks most often: Front loaders - door seals ($200-300), bearings ($400-600), spider arms ($500-800), control boards ($300-500). Top loaders - transmissions ($400-500), suspension rods ($200-300), control boards ($300-500), lid locks ($150-200). Speed Queens rarely break but when they do it's usually transmission ($600) or timer ($250). The most reliable washers I see are boring white Whirlpools and Maytags from 2010-2015 era. The least reliable are anything with touchscreen controls, steam features, or WiFi connectivity. Every extra feature is a failure point. My recommendation for you: Maytag MVW6230HW (top load, $850) or Whirlpool WFW5620HW (front load, $950). Both have physical controls (more reliable than digital), good parts availability, proven designs, and 10 year warranties on motors/drums. Avoid anything with "smart" features - I charge $400 to replace WiFi boards that add zero value to actual washing. Also, 90% of washer "breakdowns" are actually maintenance issues - clogged pumps, dirty filters, or broken inlet valves from sediment. Learn basic maintenance and your washer will last twice as long regardless of brand.
I'm looking at that Maytag MVW6230HW as I've seen a few technicians recommend it. I'm just curious why that particular model is so recommended as there are newer models that are still mechanical and top-loading. Is it mostly for the sub $1000 price point?
$400.00 to replace a Wi-Fi board. That and an extra $99.00 would replace our new washer, including setup, delivery and removing the old one. Even if it dies in 5 years I still get my money's worth.
Ugh my wife just had me purchase one of those new vented all in ones. I dread the inevitable day when it breaks in probably 2 years resulting in neither a functioning washer OR dryer.
Has a 20 yr warranty on the motor but that won’t matter when it’ll be literally everything else breaking year 2…
My Grampa was the small-town Maytag’s dealer repairman. He even wore the blue shirt and the white handled pen sized pocket screwdriver. I watched him fix a fuck-ton of machines back in the day.
But weren't the Maytag repair man the "loneliest" person as per all those TV commercials back in the day? 🤔😂😂😂
On behalf of all of us I thank you for your excellent post
i just bought the maytag analog brands from costco. thrilled. the dryer is dumb with a loud hard to close door, love it. the washer is easy to clean with stupid regular agitator, my favorite. they are not fancy. they dont have front loading gaskets that mildew. they are simple and perfect.
I have the Maytag residential commercial washer and dryer. They've been washing the hell out of my husband's stinky laundry for almost 8 years now. They still look and function like new. If they broke today I'd replace them with the exact same units.
I’ve had expensive washer dryer sets and I’ve had cheap ones. The best one I’ve ever had was a mis-matched set of Roper and Kenmore. Worked for years and when it had a problem I fixed it with help from YouTube. I paid $12.50 for the set because it was half price day at an estate sale.
I vote for Miele. They are, expensive but they are long lasting and soooo well made.
German-made, right?
Which is the best washing machine brand? I'm planning on buying a 7Kg Top Load washing machine. Whalich brand should I go for and which dealer should I go to? I hear Nikshan has offers.
Why top load and not front load?
Front load is better for clothes and saves water and detergent.
BOSCH, IFB, LG
Bosch or Haier, I planned for Bosch, but finally ended up with Haier as it gave me more warranty. I feel like warranty is important today's time, as such machines get complaints easily these days.
If you want low noise, low power consumption and long warranty (upto 20 years), you need a Samsung. But if you want a machine that actually gets the job done and won't test your patience, don't buy a Samsung.
Whirlpool or Bosch, if you want one of the best results.
LG and IFB if you want the "best" (debatable) after sales service in this city.
Godrej and Thomson, if you are on a budget.
Voltas if you want a big machine that will allow you to step inside it and wash the clothes yourself, when the circuit board inevitably breaks down.
BPL, Onida, Kelvinator or Electrolux if you are looking for your father or grandfather to go on a 'Back in the day...' nostalgic rant.
Damn bro. You cooked well. I'm inclining towards BOSCH.
LG or Samsung. But I'd say go for front load.
I have a Bosch 7kg top load fully automatic washing machine at home and it is top notch! I think it is on the expensive side, but if you are willing to spend it is the best one.
Our GE just died after only 6 years. The repair recommended Whirlpool purely due to parts availability, but I'm curious about other opinions as well.
For washing machine specifically Miele remains top in most the studies I have seen on reliability. I think LG after that.
I think there's some complexity here. Older Miele stuff (eg. Novotronic era) ran forever with no or minimal issues.
My impression is that newer Miele stuff has had more reliability issues. Don't get me wrong, I love my Miele heat pump dryer, but it feels a bit like a modern German car where there's a LOT of tech in there that could break. I suspect it won't make it as long as the old stuff that's still going strong after 2-3 decades? we'll see?
Frigidaire and Electrolux front loaders are very good.
Got this spreadsheet when I was buying early this year, people praised the OP and I've found some of the most reliable washing machine options on HomeDepot and Walmart here. Hope this might help!
Whirlpool with the most reliable washing machine options IMO
I had Speed Queen for at least 6 years before Inmoved and it was excellent! Never any problems! I wanted to bring them with me but realator out foxed me so now I have to buy new! Speed Queen is expensive but if you can afford it, it’s really good.
Maytag will last you at least 16 years; just make sure you clean the filter(s).
New Maytag commercial isn’t all that. Rather have the GE commercial set. A little loud, but very stout. Speed Queen seems to have their control board issue solved so for the money that’s probably the way to go.
Maytag set for 16 years. No issues.
Whirlpool is also American made. A Whirlpool front loader will clean better, cost less to buy, cost less to operate, be gentler on your clothes and with decent care should last a decade plus.
Topload Whirlpool. Simpler the better.
It is Miele or something else?
I love our large capacity front loading Bosch - it is over 10 years old, and amazing. However now they only make front loading Bosch washing machines with a compact capacity. They stopped making a large capacity machine in 2011, and we bought years old, and it is a great machine. It depends on your family's needs, but if a compact size would do, I highly recommend Bosch. Regardless, I would always buy a front loading machine - some people feel strongly against them, as older ones could develop mildew on the seal, however many have now developed features to avoid that. I like how gentle front loaders are on my clothing, and the energy cost savings. With energy costs increasing, that is something important to consider.
It would be great is there was a best brand, chances are it would be the brand most people buy. Unfortunately it's a crap-shoot. Consumer reports rates LG's very highly but I've read tons of horror stories like with most brands.
I would get an LG front load or speed queen top load.
Speed queen
not Maytag or whirlpool. They sell the most but also have the most recorded repair calls.
Wait, that's just math
Don't listen to someone name a meme buster. He's just asking for trouble 😉
Well my overpriced 16 year old Miele inherited from the prior owner of this house, is making some weird clicking noises and gets stuck on running cycles. It seems the only way to reset this paperweight is by unplugging and then opening and closing the door a ton of times. Needless to say this thing is a hunk o'junk, and my fiancé and I want something else. We want a washer that is front load, very water efficient, and relatively quiet. Ideally there would be no wifi or finicky doodads, the more basic the better. Not sure if this is allowed to be asked, but if anyone has any brand/model ideas I would be super grateful!?
Edit, fair point does seem like the washer is a trooper and worth the $2000 they spent on it. I guess for us all we have seen is a finicky machine at the end of its life. Maybe worth looking into getting another Miele.
No such thing as “best”. There are better washers than others. Everything has an Achilles heel nowadays. Primarily the electronic components. Speed Queen does have the most robust mechanical built washer but will the electronics last you 20+ years? 30+ years? Especially if the control boards get discontinued in 8 to 10 years? Possibly if you are really lucky, but not expected even for their higher prices.
If you think Miele is a hunk of junk you’re probably in for a rude awakening
My thoughts exactly! 10 years out of a machine is what I'd expected, 16 and I'd be singing its praises.
10 years out of a machine is what I'd expected, 16 and I'd be singing its praises.
My Sear's Kenmore front loader is >20 years old. Zero problems.
I do protect the electronics (the most expensive component to replace) with a commercial grade surge protector.
If you want a front load washer that has no Wi-Fi or “finicky do dads” then you need to look at the entry level LG front load. It won’t have a towel setting but you wash towels on the heavy duty cycle. Write down on a piece of paper, the cycles that you need for the type of washing that you do. Go to the store and see which machine does that without the use of Wi-Fi and download in an app on your phone. Make sure the drain pump and filter or in the front of the machine and easily accessible.
Lol. A washer lasting 16 yrs old is not a hunk a junk these days.
However, many people on here reco Speed Queen for being a more "basic workhorse"- but I think those recos are for the top loaders. Speed Queen does have a HE front loader you may want to check out..
And may be worth getting repaired even if it is expensive to do. NOTHING is made as well as it was 16 years ago and every year it gets worse. You can buy a new Miele and only get 5 years out of it.
Everyone has opinions. Here's mine. Any Fisher & Paykel you can find - new or used. Simple machines, easy to repair, work better than anything else we have tried, and are built to last. Just as efficient as any front loader.
Thanks that is helpful!!
There can be plenty of choices but that would really depend on your needs and your budget. I've been using my LG WM3555HVA 24 Inch Smart Front Load Washer/Dryer Combo for a quite some time now and it's the best that I had so far. The size is not too bulky but it is heavy duty and very easy to use!!
Miele or Electrolux front load, Speedqueen top load
Miele.
100% agree.
The arguments people make for Speed Queen boil down to 'so what if it's loud, wrecks your clothes, and wastes water and energy? It'll last forever!' Well, turns out lasting a long time isn't the only aspect you want to consider.
Miele, on the other hand, hits the right balance of good design, engineering, quality control, efficiency, and convenience. Yes, they cost more — for a reason.
But you have to be careful with those ones. There are a few bad apples even with Miele by now. It’s not as good as it was back in the day.
I’ve only had great experiences with LG washers.
It depends on the specific appliance, I have different recommendations based on type. Only one with a clear winner is Bosh (or Miele, but $$$) for dishwashers
Washers/Dryers: Electrolux is good for everyday brand. LG also punches above its weight when it comes to them as well, definitely one of their better offerings.
Detest Samsung and haven't had any issues with my LG appliances ever. Currently have two LG wash towers in each house (total of four) and they are magic. They haven't needed any servicing in 4 years and everyone that uses them loves them. I get a tech out to check them and he just says yeah look good see you in 6-12 months
This seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I 100% agree. After the terrible time we’ve had with an LG washer we bought new 2 years ago, I’ll never buy anything they make ever again. I’m burned for life.
Strange - I have two sets of LG washers and dryers (heat pump units) - zero issues. My old Samsung units were trash.
For what it’s worth, my last set of LG washer and dryer lasted well over a decade. No issues with the new set either. Obviously statistics trump anecdotes though.
I recently purchased the Equator Version 2 Pro and have been very happy with it.
It has a large capacity, several wash cycles to handle different fabrics, and a stainless steel tub that has held up well over time.
