What Redditors are Saying

Best Top Load Washer Recommendations

TL;DR

  • Speed Queen TC5: Known for durability and old-school reliability [1:3].
  • LG WT7405CW: Large capacity with deep wash options, recommended by multiple users [1:4][1:9].
  • Maytag MVWC565FW: Budget-friendly and reliable option [1:3].

Reliability and Cleaning Performance

When looking for a top load washer, reliability and cleaning ability are paramount. The Speed Queen TC5 is frequently recommended due to its robust construction and effective cleaning capabilities [1:3]. Users appreciate its simplicity and the absence of overly complicated features that might break down over time [2:5]. Additionally, the Maytag MVWC565FW is noted for its strong wash action and straightforward controls, making it a solid budget-friendly choice [1:3].

Capacity and Features

For families or individuals who need a large capacity washer, the LG WT7405CW stands out. It offers a huge drum and a deep wash option, which is particularly useful for heavily soiled clothes [1:4]. This model is favored for its ability to handle larger loads efficiently, such as bedding and bulky items [4:6]. Another popular choice is the Whirlpool model with a removable agitator, allowing for flexibility in washing different types of laundry [5].

User Experiences and Preferences

Many users prefer top loaders over front loaders due to issues like mold in front loaders [5]. While front loaders are often praised for their efficiency and gentleness on clothes [2:8], top loaders are favored for their ease of use and less maintenance [5]. Some users have experienced mechanical failures with front loaders, leading them to switch back to top loaders [2:10].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

While these discussions provide valuable insights, it's important to consider additional factors such as energy efficiency, warranty options, and specific brand reputation. For example, Speed Queen (Huebsch in Canada) is known for its reliability but may not be the most water-efficient [4:1]. It's also advisable to check consumer reports and reviews for detailed performance evaluations and user feedback.

Just as the title says. I need top load with agitator. All the super extra features are nice and all but the 2 most important things are reliability and cleaning ability.
Needs to be from Best Buy, under $800. I got this list from bestbuy.com, which of these would be the best?

Have you decided on a washer yet? I'm considering this Kenmore model for its reliability and cleaning ability.

I’d go with the Speed Queen TC5 . built like a tank, old-school agitator, and gets clothes super clean.

If you want something more budget-friendly, the Maytag MVWC565FW is a solid pick. Reliable, simple controls, and strong wash action.

This post helped me find one that doesn’t overcomplicate laundry. Worth checking out!

We opted for the LG WT7405CW and love it. It has a HUGE drum, and had the Deep Wash option which is great for getting the stink out of my basketball shorts. The bottom line is, for anything really dirty or stinky, you need WATER to clean it. The HE is a great idea and works pretty good on alot of things, but for dirty or smelly stuff, deep wash is the way to go. So glad we got this washer!

Why does it have to be a top load? I have had a front load for years and works great. Uses a lot less water and gets your clothes clean.

My front loader crapped out on me after less than 3 years and it never really got the stink out of my clothes.. so back to a top loader with agitator. Those lasted over a decade and always did the job. Maybe I had back luck with the front loader, but every review I see confirms that generally a top loader w/agitator cleans better than front loader or top loader with no agitator.

Front loaders get so gross in the door seal. I had one and whipped it down regularly. It still would get gross and make my clothes musty so much faster.

My LG with no agitator doesn’t clean my work clothes, and 2yrs after buying it I am looking for another washer…it wasn’t going to be LG but maybe the agitator makes all the difference.🤷‍♂️ The more I read up,the more it seems that the same crap is being peddled with a different name brand sticker…it’s exhausting

someone tell me the best top-loading washer for a family that runs loads nonstop?

Posted by Ordinary_Store1998 · in r/homeowners · 6 days ago

Our washer is on its last spin and with two kids in sports plus a dog who thinks mud is a lifestyle, we’re doing laundry almost every day. I’ve always preferred top-loaders because they’re easier to throw stuff into on the fly (inevitably someone finds a dirty jersey right after I start a cycle).

EDIT: I picked this up yesterday and so far it’s handled a muddy load without fuss, thanks for all the replies, really helpful!

What I need is something durable enough to keep up with heavy use, big enough for bedding, and straightforward to run without a million unnecessary settings. I don’t mind paying a bit more upfront if it saves me from replacing another washer in a few years.

For anyone in a busy household, what top-loader are you using and would you recommend it?

thanks

I always had top loaders. But when we needed a new one 8 years ago, we opted for a front loader. It holds far more than a top loader, cleans really, really well, uses far less water and electricity. I can load a CaliKing comforter in there w/out any problem. Plus, it's far more gentle on clothes - especially delicates.

5 upvotes on reddit
beccabeth741 · 6 days ago

If you look at current research and recommendations, front loaders are the best choice. The way they clean clothes is the most efficient, not only in the way they use water but in the way they wash the clothes. Clothes need friction against each other to get rid of stains and odors. Front loaders are natural agitators because of the way the clothes rotate in the drum. The complaints people have about front loaders are usually due to experiences with older models which were not as good and more prone to problems.

I wouldn't mind front loaders if they made them with manual controls for the settings. I can give the machine the correct instructions for the load I'm doing, and I hate relying on inputting electronic instructions into an appliance using water because it always seeps into or condenses onto the control panel that then fritzes out and forgets what it's doing, and I have to reboot the whole thing and run the load several times to get it finished. It's dumb design.

Speed Queen is the BIFL washer, plus no lid lock! That alone is enough to make me want one, my lid lock bypass with a magnet is finicky.

Mine has lid kock with button panel control- my friend has what seems like the same model with knob controls and no lid locks. We bought them the same year, so just research the model to make sure on the lid lock. The lid lock is annoying.

2 upvotes on reddit
03263 · 6 days ago

Mine had a plastic tab that shoots out to lock the lid, and if it detects that tab is not in the right place it won't work. Not extended enough, or extended too far.

Well the tab broke. It wouldn't open one time and I forced it, so it snapped.

I got it working again by detaching the lid lock apparatus, putting tape over the remaining bit of tab and a neodymium magnet to make it appear functional, but I have to replace the tape or reposition the magnet often, every few loads. It's a pain but not quite enough pain to take it apart and try to fix it any better, I'd rather just get a new washer, mine has been good to me but it doesn't clean so well with just an impeller.

You can actually buy the top loaders from Walmart in my area for delivery. They are $1,300 currently.

Additionally, Amana makes a decent top loader that's only about $550.

I have had the Amana for 7 years, was left to us when we purchased our home, and it takes a beating! I’m all for getting a more expensive product so it’ll last a long time, but this washer has been fantastic. I love the fact it’s super simple without any frills.

With two kids in sports and a dog, I’d go with a Whirlpool or Maytag with a removable agitator. Big enough for bedding, tough enough for dirty jerseys, and you won’t be replacing it in a couple of years

No they suck… at least the one at my house did when I bought it. It leave clothes soaking wet, leak out of the seal, and the doors hit the dryer door.

My and others experience with front loaders is that due to the force vectors the bearings fail and it's usually more to have it fixed than the washer is worth.

That's how mine failed and it's how my neighbors failed a few weeks ago.

You rely on a huge gasket to keep the water where it's supposed to be instead of a small seal around the drive shaft.

You have to leave them open to dry out and not get mold issues, which means that you have a door flapping around your laundry space whereas a top loader the door is out of the way when open.

We have a Speed Queen - about 4 years now and have had to have it repaired already. It‘s just two of us, so doesn’t get used hard. Our clothes are never heavily soiled. a bit disappointing after we got the hard sell front the appliance store. But so much better than our previous front loader and smelly towels !

Dad_Vibes_23 · 1 month ago

On the flip side… we’ve had ours for 9 years w/ two kids from infancy to now, so A LOT of laundry (at least one load a day). The only thing I’ve had to replace was the water fill valve because it would slow drip into the tub when turned off. $40 part and 20min of my time.

It still runs and cleans as good today as it did on day-1, and I definitely wouldn’t trust any other unit to be as reliable as this one.

Late to the game here but I too am looking for a new Washer. I had an LG Inverter Direct Drive Truebalance WT1501CW. Honestly,? It WAS a great Washer. Never a problem until it did. Mechanically? Worked great! Problem is, the last 3 months, clothes were coming out with dirt & scum type residue. I took a few things apart looking for filters, cleaned the hose & ran multiple cleaning cycles. Nothing obvious. Thought it was all in my wife's head but she doesn't really complain much so I had to look. Then my son started taking it apart, & didn't stop until he got the drum out. Well low and behold, the spinner that the SS tub is on was full of corrosion & scum. No sense putting it back together because it will continue to throw sludge/dirt forever. Not going to run a clean cycle every week. This component should have been stainless steel. You will always have this problem, once it starts to happen. I think this should be a crime. Anyway, I don't know if it's possible but I will try to find out if this part is made of stainless steel before I purchase the next one. I'd upload a pic (very graphic) but I don't see a way.

In 2018.. I bought two speed queens. Washer and dryer. They were both junk. The washer...did not get anything cleaned. And the dryers gas burner went dead after a week. I swapped them out for lg front loaders. Ive heard the speed queens from that year (2017/2018) were absolutely lemons. I also heard the newer models today are better..but i cant confirm it. The models I had and hated were.. TR7000WN and DR7000WG

Best top load washing machine

Posted by motorsportnut · in r/Appliances · 1 year ago

Hi everyone - my current GE top load washing machine (that I've hated for a while as it leaves stains on clothes) is finally starting to die and I will need to replace it. I was looking for suggestions (I'm in Canada) as the reviews for almost any model are either super positive or super negative, which makes it hard to cut through the BS

My criteria are:

  • Top loading
  • High capacity (family of 5)
  • Energy efficiency would be nice
  • Not GE again
  • Colour is not important (white is fine).

Thanks in advance!

I just replaced my old dying washing machine with the BLACK+DECKER for my family of 5.

It has worked great so far, fitting plenty of clothes in each load and getting them very clean.

The portability also comes in handy for washing things like kids' stuffed animals and pet beds around the house.

Watch this video.

Be careful of high capacity and look more at load weight. Most modern washers are only half fill, so you 4.2cuft is actually closer to 2cuft.

We have had Speed Queen front load units for over 10 years, and it's rated at 3.2cuft, but we had a family of 5 (3 adults, 2 teenagers), now only 2 adults. They have never had a problem in keeping up with laundry, even when cleaning Queen size bedding.

If you go Speed Queen, watch this on their top load units. The 1st video explains all US available brands. The 2nd is on the 2 Speed Queen top loads, and the 3rd is on why the Speed Queen suspension is different from all the rest.

For a top load I reccomend speed squeen (Huebsch in Canada) They got lower rating because they are not water eficient. But they got 5/5 for reliability. https://ca.huebsch.com/products/all-products/#top-load-washers (TR7 have 7 years warranty TR5 and TC5 have five years warranty)

If you dont want to spend so much on Speed Queen Then LG is also solid option.

Here is more info about LG top load washers https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IF43bsh9dJc&t=54s

They use less water on purpose because they are water efficient washers. If more water will be needed LG top load washers have deep fill program which fill drum with more water.some people use also bedding program if they need even more water

Best Top-Loading wash machine!??

Posted by crissa2211 · in r/Appliances · 7 months ago

Our Samsung front load wash machine that came with our house has given out, and we need a new one. I want a top loader. The amount of mold I had to clean off our previous front loader is just too gross for me to ever want to do again. I’ve looked at the Whirlpool with the removable agitator, some love it and some say it’s the worst thing ever! I just liked the idea of being able to have agitator for deep cleaning, but remove it to fit quilts, comforters and bulky items. We are a family of four with a dog… I just want reliable, easy to maintain/keep clean machine. I’m overwhelmed with all the choices and the influx of positive and negative reviews on everything. I know everyone isn’t going to love the same thing — but if there are any repairmen in here — any you feel give people the least amount of issues!?! Thanks for any help!!

Also would love to keep cost under $1000, and if it can be available at Costco, that would be great. I love their warranty, free delivery and return policy in case it doesn’t work out.

You're going to get a lot of answers for Speed Queen. I am going to be one of them. There are essentially two types of Speed Queen top load machines.

There is the TC5003 which is a more traditional machine with a "classic" wash style (as SQ calls it) where the agitator moves separately from the basket. It can be a little bit aggressive, so if you don't have very dirty clothes you may want to go with the other style. This machine (and it's matching dryer) comes with a 5 year manufacturers warranty.

The TR series comes in three flavors. The TR3, TR5, and TR7. These machines all use a gentler style of washing where the "agitator" in attached directly to the basket and just moves along with it. There's less agitation, so it is much more gentle on clothing, but this is at the expense of washing performance. As you move up the models from 3 to 5 to 7, you get more programming options for the washing cycles and longer term manufacturers parts and labor warranties starting at 3 years, then 5 years, then 7 years respectively. Mechanically these three machines are nearly identical, so really what you get as you increase in price and model is more features/controls and longer warranty coverage.

Speed Queen machines are great, but they do have their drawbacks. I have the TC5003 and it's matching dryer and love them, but they are a bit loud. They also have a somewhat limited capacity where a queen size comforter is the absolute maximum that you can fit in the washer.

In general, I tend to suggest folks go with either the TC5 or TR5 depending in your wash performance needs. If you tend to have dirtier clothing from your occupation or hobbies, then the TC5 is great. If you work an office job or have more delicate clothing items, then the TR5 is probably the one for you.

If Speed Queen machines are too expensive or not large enough, then I would recommend basically any GE washing machine that fits your budget.

I’ve had the TR5 for a few years and I’m happy with it. I soak the clothes in the washer for a while on the rare occasions when I need heavy duty cleaning and it works well enough for my needs.

2 upvotes on reddit
bassistben · 2 months ago

They're great machines and super reliable. I am an appliance tech and I've seen inside a fair few washing machines (even SQs) and know their mechanical operations well. On the TR machines, the entire basket and "agitator" (in quotes bc it really doesn't agitate) move as one whole thing. That's why it doesn't have the "screw" mechanism to circulate clothing/water. They call this the "modern wash". It just moves back and forth with no independent agitator action. This is great for gentler cleaning, but it costs in wash performance. In fact, it's my understanding that when they released the first round of the "modern wash" machines after stopping their original style, everyone complained that they didn't was as well. So they dressed up the old style with some electronics but left the mechanics virtually unchanged and then called the TC machines the "classic wash". So for mechanics, construction workers, farmers, landscapers, midwives, care homes, or anything else where you get really dirty, the TC machine is the way to go. For everything else, there's MasterCard 😉

It’s been a year long battle, they’ve replaced my washing machine 4 times and all of them have the same issue - it’s sucks up clothes and no way to get them out without ripping. And the best part is they said they don’t do refunds! Any company that can’t stand behind their products is trash. Everyone shits on Samsung, but my parents had one and I had 0 issues using it, it’s still going 13 years strong.

Not going to be a popular opinion, but we just got an LG top load 8600, but it doesn’t have an agitator. So far so good for about a month. Like it better than the front load we replaced. Fits a lot of clothes.

This sub adores Speed Queen. Yale Appliance has a really helpful article about the current models. They have a wealth of information and studies. We went for the TR5 washer and DR5 washer. The rotary knobs still use a control board but I personally prefer them over digital buttons. We purchased through our local appliance store and they can service them if needed. I was also sold on their simplicity and efficiency. Time will tell how we like them but I feel good about our purchase.

Top Loading Washing Machines

For personal reasons, I can't do a front loader, and while my current top loader isn't bad, I know that these things don't last in perpetuity, I was wondering what this hive mind considers the best top loaders. For reference, I live in the States (for the time being).

LG for sure, do not buy Speed Queen, not made like they're used to.

Ours rusted out after 10 years, entire lid and housing at top. Others have complained about rust as well online, stained our clothes.

Also avoid Whirlpool, Maytag and GE, lots of issues.

My last house had a small space for the washer and dryer in the ivory-colored kitchen with stainless appliances. Everything was too big or ugly. I jokingly said to the lady at Home Depot "I wish I could find the almond-colored appliances my mom had in the 90s." They have them available on order. I got Speed Queen which also comes in white. Old fashioned top load washer with no bells or whistles to fail and a sturdy dryer. I don't remember the exact price but the were not expensive.

Edit to suggest that you buy a good quality grabber and keep it in your laundry to help get clothes out of the washer or dryer.

Do not buy a Samsung. The design allows water to sit in the tub under the drum which promotes mold and any goop from oversoaping to build up until you have brown gunk flinging into the wash tub. Pulled the drum 2 years ago and deep cleaned everything and have been very careful to avoid oversoaping now, and it's already throwing brown gunk again.

Low_Dress9213 · 6 months ago

Did you pull the drum yourself? I have a Samsung 😖

Taint_Burglar · 6 months ago

Yes I couldn't sleep once I saw the gunk in there. 4AM alone in my basement on a deep YouTube dive of how to remove the drum and clean the machine. Got it all back together by myself too!

Yeah Samsung appliances suck. Sure they look sleek and have 9200 washing settings, but they fail.
Just stick to phones and televisions ( if they fixed their power supply issue).

The only BIFL top loader is the Speed Queen TC5 ($1350). It has an old school agitator that can handle the dirtiest and most stained clothes.

If you don't have filthy and stained clothes (you work in an office), you can buy the Speed Queen TR series that don't have agitators.

Most Reliable Top-loading Washer under $600?

Posted by Super-D · in r/Appliances · 1 year ago

Okay, first, heartfelt apologies for yet another "which is the least sh*tty washer" post. I mean it. Really, I'm sorry. :)

I'm not in the position to fork out for a Speed Queen or Maytag commercial washer currently, have to keep my purchase under $600.

I've spent lots of dough (around $1K each for my last two washers, one was Maytag, the current one was LG, totally wasted my money; I thought more expensive should mean better quality---I'm a fool, I know, I know, that was another time, in another dimension...). My mom's 50-year old Maytag keeps humming along, and I've been buying utter crap machines that are designed to fail in 3 or 4 years. Had I known about Speed Queen and Maytag commercial washers years ago, I'd have bought one. Will do so one day for sure, just not now.

So, instead of repairing my LG, I'm going to replace it, and need to find something under $600 which can last at least 4-6 years or more without giving me trouble. Is there anything really that fits this need? Am I crazy to ask? Where do all of the broken washers go? Are Elon's rockets secretly transporting the glut of broken washers up into the atmosphere, and now there is a ring of old appliances orbiting the earth and destroying important satellites? Are aliens delaying their attack because they're trying to figure out if the sea of appliances circling the earth indicates this planet isn't worth conquering? Does Ryan Gosling really rollerblade? These are the questions which burn in the minds of upstanding citizens and appliance shoppers on a daily basis. :D

Okay, back to your lives, just ignore me and leave me to make another wrong appliance choice and live a life of misery...it's hopeless. (But if you DO have a non-sucky top-loading washer choice to share, one which is 93.74% likely to last more than 5 years...I would be most appreciative.) :D

Thank you

Old school Whirlpool washer with direct drive transmission from the 90's. Or a used Speed Queen if you can find one. All the other options share the same engineering flaw -- suspension rods.

I go to the Restore nearby and see what they have. If it's mechanical, not electronic, it comes home with me. I have a killer Bosch dryer that I got for $75, works better than anything I've ever had before.

Check used first.

I used to do similarly, had a guy who owned a repair business and I bought repaired appliances from him. He eventually changed careers and shut the biz down. Can’t go the used route this time, but may again in the future.

All appliances built now are literally designed to break down and they do try to make it difficult to diagnose and fix.

When I buy appliances literally the only thing I look at is how basic is this machine and can it be taken apart easily

All new top loading washers are junk except the Speed Queen TC5003 washer. Try to find a used top loading Speed Queen washer that's NOT the TR series on Facebook marketplace, craigslist, or used appliance shop.

The Maytag Commercial washer is junk, don't buy it.

You need to find a older Kenmore or Maytag in good condition. The new top loaders are crap and speed queen has changed as of about 7 years ago. Did you know the epa made it illegal to produce machines with timers? Because they are not high efficiency. Ok they have the right idea in mind but the appliance corporations are just making things that fail faster and on purpose. There is a far greater cost in the production and sales of junk. Stop sending your money over seas. Buy from a local repair tech, get a old machine that has been rebuilt.

TR7, TR5,TR3 are non transmission models, wash action is similar to a front load except with an agitator. TC5 is top load classic, transmission driven with more aggressive agitation like an old school Maytag.

Here is a consumer report for top load washers its a pdf https://reprints.theygsgroup.com/cr/reprints/LG_WashingMachines_Ratings.pdf

LG is a water eficient model they use less water on purpose. In case you need more water, you can use a deep fill button. If you need even more water, bedding setting is better.

It does have a detergent dispenser and prewash+ option https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SDqB4yH3muo&pp=ygUQbGcgdG9wIGxvYWQgc29haw%3D%3D

LG offers two versions with an agitator and an impeller

The Agitator version https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gMCEHEBOIjg&t=312s&pp=ygUcbGcgdG9wIGxvYWQgYWdpdGF0b3Igd2FzaGVyIA%3D%3D

Impeller cleans better https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IF43bsh9dJc

Look at Costco they offer free two year warranty, free delivery, haul away, and 90 days to return your apliance

Additionally, LG's front loaders are also well known. They are more gentle, wash better, and spin much faster than their top load counter parts. If you aren't directly opposed, you may research them as well.

Sounds like you have a speed queen TR, one of the most controversial machines ever made. While I still greatly appreciate the TC5 I can see why owning a TR would be a huge turn off.

Speed Queen alienated the vast majority of their fans with the TR, but somehow managed to win them back with the TC despite their questionable handling of the whole situation.

I would consider LG's top load offerings, specifically the impeller models. They do a pretty good job and I've gotten very few complaints on them.

Only other thing I'd say is if you are willing to venture into the world of a front load, LG front loads tend to get even more favorable reviews.

GE's basic line is another honorable mention even if their reliability is a bit questionable. (GTW465/GTW585)

best top load washer

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Top Load Washer:

  1. Capacity: Look for a washer with a capacity of at least 4.5 cubic feet to handle larger loads, which is ideal for families or frequent laundry.

  2. Energy Efficiency: Choose a model with an Energy Star rating to save on electricity and water bills. This is especially important for long-term cost savings.

  3. Wash Cycles and Options: Consider washers that offer a variety of wash cycles (e.g., delicate, heavy-duty, quick wash) and options (e.g., steam cleaning, soil level adjustment) for versatility.

  4. Spin Speed: Higher spin speeds (around 800-1200 RPM) help extract more water from clothes, reducing drying time and energy usage.

  5. Noise Level: Look for models with noise-reduction features if you have a laundry area near living spaces.

  6. Reliability and Warranty: Research brands known for reliability and check the warranty offered. A longer warranty can indicate better durability.

Recommendations:

  • LG WT7800CW: This model is highly rated for its large capacity (5.5 cu. ft.), energy efficiency, and smart features like Wi-Fi connectivity for remote monitoring. It also has a powerful wash performance and multiple wash cycles.

  • Whirlpool WTW8120HW: Known for its robust build and user-friendly interface, this washer offers a 5.3 cu. ft. capacity, a variety of wash cycles, and a built-in water faucet for pre-treating stains.

  • Samsung WA50R5400AV: This washer features a 5.0 cu. ft. capacity, self-cleaning cycle, and a unique Active WaterJet for pre-treating stains, making it a great option for busy households.

Choosing any of these models will provide you with a reliable and efficient laundry experience.
