TL;DR
Roguelikes and Roguelites
Games like "Vampire Survivors" and "Slay the Spire" are popular choices for short play sessions due to their roguelike nature. "Vampire Survivors" is available on multiple platforms and offers a compelling experience, though some users note that rounds can last up to 30 minutes [2:1]. "Slay the Spire," a deck-building dungeon crawler, allows players to save progress frequently, making it easy to jump in and out of the game
[4:2].
Quick Session Games
For those looking for games with very short session times, "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2" is highly recommended. Each session lasts about two minutes, providing a fast-paced and addictive experience [2:7]. "Enter the Gungeon" is another option that allows for quick gameplay, ideal for gamers with limited time
[2:8].
Casual and Relaxing Games
For a more relaxed gaming experience, "Dredge" and "Animal Crossing" are suggested. "Dredge" allows players to pause or quit easily after a short period, although some find themselves playing longer than intended [2:4]. "Animal Crossing" provides a day-by-day type of gameplay, encouraging short daily sessions
[4:4].
Puzzle and Strategy Games
Games like "Into the Breach" and "Olli Olli World" offer strategic gameplay in bite-sized chunks. "Into the Breach" is a tactical puzzle game where matches are only five turns long, allowing for quick yet satisfying sessions [4:1]. "Olli Olli World" provides challenging fun with a cartoony presentation, suitable for short bursts of play
[4:7].
These games provide a variety of options for players seeking engaging experiences without lengthy commitments. Whether you prefer strategy, casual relaxation, or quick action, there's a game suited for your short play sessions.
She was the typical puzzle game mom.
For her birthday a couple of years ago, I got her a vintage Nintendo 64, so she could play her favorite game of all time - Tetrisphere.
Tetrisphere was awesome! Still surprised no one's done a remake.
My mom plays Sims a lot, she has so many dlc’s. She recently discovered mods.
Which Sims game does she play?
Sims 3 and 4
Right? Ever since I played pong, donkey kong, qbert, and the likes at my uncle's house I was hooked. Got an NES for xmas in '88 or '89 and it's been my biggest hobby ever since with some brief moments without in my 20s.
I'm old enough to be a grandma, but have no kids. Not sure if I'd count, but I'm gonna answer anyway. I've been playing video games since the 80s. I like a lot of different types of games: rpg, arpg, jrpg, crpg (sensing a trend?), brawler, visual novel, action, adventure, metroidvania, point & click, puzzle, puzzle platformer, various types of sims. They have to be third person though as first person makes me physically ill. The types of games I couldn't care less about are 99% of shooters, souls likes, precision platformers, sports, and RTS.
My favorites are Final Fantasy, Yakuza, Witcher, and Assassin's Creed.
My mom is 70 and doesn't play any games other than like scrabble or puzzles or something on her phone.
Yakuza is an amazing choice
I guess you could say there’s ZERO chance given the games they like they wouldn’t enjoy it….
I will see myself out
I’m 71, I play those games too. Ghost of Tsushima is a favorite. I dislike shooters, too.
My mom has been playing Scrabble Go on her phone for longer than I can remember. Once, I got her old phone when she got a new one and it had Scrabble burnt into the phone screen 😭
I'm a mom, and like the above in my gaming...rpg heavy, no first person, metroidvanias, etc. My kid wished me luck on my grinding when I booted up Path of Exile 2 earlier, to hunt gear and mats. He watched me cry playing Baldur's Gate 3. He asks me how my husband in Stardew and my boyfriends in Love and Deepspace are doing, often teasingly in front of my husband (who fully embraces my pixel romances). He's watched me beat masterpieces like the Ori games and Expedition 33. We hunt shiny Pokémon together, play Mario, Donkey Kong, and Kirby together. We compare strategies in Zelda. He loves exploring Assassins Creed games with me and learning from the history in them. We're each awaiting several different games with intense excitement. We went to midnight release of the Switch 2 together. His friends bring their switches over to get me to beat levels or at least guide them through it.
I've been gaming since my Atari and giant floppy disks, and I don't ever see myself stopping. Female gamers are a huge part of the market and have always been. Anyone who rags on 'girl gamers' just want to gatekeep, and they're not worth worrying about.
It's almost exam season for me, so I need to lock in. So no more games like val, rivals. I like playing a short session in between subjects for about 5-10 mins. I used to play rocket league in this situation but, it gets me tilted sometimes and that's not fun. I would prefer a single player game I guess but something like minecraft or stardew valley are games that I accidently spend too long on. So what's a game where like one playthrough last for like 5-10 mins So I can simply stop after?
I like turn-based games, games with rounds, push-pause, and roguelites/likes for this purpose.
Balatro
Gnomes
Peglin
Nordhold
Rift Wizard
Stuck in Time
Loop Hero
Balatro is more of a time machine. Hours disappear almost immediately
Vampire survivors. It's on mobile, PC, and console. It's a roguelite and VERY good for short play sessions.
Also many people don't think of Dark Souls/ Elden Ring as being a good option for short sessions, but the progression is so incremental bc of the difficulty, I find it lends itself well to short bursts. The auto save system is extremely efficient and generous, so unless you happen to quit in the middle of a boss fight, you can simply turn the game off any time and load back in exactly where you left off. I have 3 kids, and some days I couldn't sit down and have a long gaming session, and this approach let me beat the Elden Ring DLC without losing my mind lol
Vampire Survivors is good, but the rounds are 30 minutes. That's kind of on the longer side. OP is asking for 5-10 minute games.
Once you complete a level you unlock hurry mode which makes the clock tick twice as fast.
15 min max rounds, 10 for the 20 min stages.
Multiple builds to play with, endless replayability for me.
That said, OP DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. I have literally spent entire MS teams meetings at work ignoring the conversation and playing this game.
Oof I forgot about how long the rounds are.
I’ve gotten so much work done by adhering to: each time I die in elden ring I will do xyz repetitive work task
"Dredge" is great! You can easily pause it or quit after 10 min, as the time in-game only progresses when you move.
> "Dredge" is great! You can easily pause it or quit after 10 min,
ha! ... then for some reason when you look at the clock 2 hours have passed easily and you're still selling fish and looking for metal scrap and wooden planks to tune up your boat
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2
Great soundtrack, fast addictive gameplay, 2 mins sessions. Great game for 10 mins or 2 hours.
Ahh, this is such a good recommendation I wouldn't have thought of.
I wish they had remade 3 in that collection.Had larger maps that had a feeling of discovery about them without going over board into the games that came after. Was still great for short sessions. It's maybe not as nostalgic for a lot of players, but I think I probably had more hours in it than 1 and 2. I gotta go find a disc. You may have helped OP, but now I'm done for. RIP
Enter the Gungeon. Gamer all my life but had kids, was able to jump in and out so I could focus on my kids but still play occasionally
Would be great to hear people's recommendations on what they think the best shorter games on offer are. Thanks.
Edit: Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone! You've all helped my choice paralysis.
Cocoon was a great short game.
I tend to find most Annapurna games are pretty quality.
Play crime scene simulator it goes level by level and it’s easy to pick up and put down and it’s a lot of fun.
Seconded, I'm mid way through level 9 now and I wish there were more levels! :)
South of Midnight is a little longer, id say 8-10 hours, but I think is a great one to check out!
Came here to suggest South of Midnight myself.
Awesome game, my personal GOTY so far.
This!!! Freaking fantastic game- fresh story, awesome soundtrack, gameplay was solid. 100% recommend this game
It came out of nowhere for me, tried it on a whim and it's stuck with me more than most games I've played over the last couple decades. It was just so well done.
Still Wakes the Deep was great at around that length
Nice. I already have that one downloaded and had checked it out for a few minutes. I'll dive in (no pun intended)
I’m half way through Crime Scene Cleaner and it’s so strangely relaxing even though the environments are horrible lol
Firewatch is a great short game, plus you can easily get 100% achievements
Ideally it would be:
I find myself only having a few minutes to play video games every now and then, but I’m often stopped realizing I have to commit 30min to an hour in order to reach a sense of accomplishment, or even an adequate save point.
Close games for me would be Breath of the Wild, since it’s essentially a bunch of small quests in one large one, but sometimes 5 minute sessions don’t accomplish anything. Then there’s Stardew Valley which has a nice slow growth over time, but I’m forced to play out an entire day before I can save. I’m thinking Animal Crossing would be a good match but I’ve never played New Horizons. I imagine “chill” games would fit this description the most.
Any thoughts?
Slay the Spire.
A deck building dungeon crawler type of game that lets you save in every single room. Depending on how good you get or the perks and cards you receive on a run, you could clear a handful of rooms or maybe even a whole level in every 5-10 minute session. There are 4 different characters and lots of unlockables so it is a game you can keep coming back to even after completing a run.
Hades. No contest. You can play it in short chunks just fine and still feel like you are making progress.
I say animal crossing. Just because at the beginning there’s not much to do. The game is a day by day type game where you can’t get a lot done in one day and it kinda forces you to come back the next.
Great suggestion. I’d love to be able to experience it all for the first time. New Horizons was my first Animal Crossing game and it was absolutely delightful.
Seconded. This is exactly the game I do this with. Good fun
I came here to say the same. Awesome bite-size strategy. Very deep, great visual communication to remind the periodic player, and you can knock out a level on five/ten minutes.
As a companion to this, Olli Olli World follows the same spirit with a much more cartoony presentation. It’s perfect for small doses of challenging fun.
I got full on addicted to the game for a while. But after 8-9 months, you end up getting a bunch of collectables and there wasn't much to do most days. A month would start and in 3-4 days I'd have all the new fish, bugs etc.
Turns out the game is a very wide pool, but not at all deep.
On same note riders republic is very fun
I played a couple trials of that game and I hated all of the dialogue and cutscenes, but the gameplay was extremely satisfying and was really fun to play.
Not sure why there are downvotes, but I agree, I had issues getting into this game because the first x hours (which I never played past) were all like "did you know that you can press the a button to talk to people?"
I get that it's for beginners, but it'd be nice to be able to skip these tutorial-lite sections.
Same thing for Pokemon where it "teaches" you about elemental weaknesses.
u/keviokevio, this is the one.
It's a tactical puzzle game where each individual match is only 5 turns long. You do X number of matches per game, but it's a rouge lite so when you die you start over.
It has unlockable squads the will make you completely rethink the game, and it had a lot of achievements and medals to earn.
I 100%ed everything and it took 100 or so hours
Looking for a game simple and fun enough to hop on for a little if I feel like it but fun and engaging enough to keep me busy for hours if I choose.
What are your go-to games?
Shattered Pixel Dungeon (it's freeware on Android! :) )
Slice & Dice
Tiny Bubbles
Race for the Galaxy
Dominion
balatro. It's a deck building roguelike.
Funny I got balarto and was super addicted at first playing it almost for 24 hours straight and after never had a desire to go back. Weird
Fun game, but it really seems to burn through my battery more than any other game I have. Even rather detailed 3D games.
Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic. It's a port of RCT2 but with the scenarios from RCT1 and the expansion packs remade. 90 scenarios in the base game. Here's a video if you're interested.
I love this game, but it bugs me that the scenarios are locked until you complete earlier ones. So many scenarios have the same goal, eg play for 3 years. I often want a more long term goal without a time limit, but the later scenarios are unavailable.
(Also, I played this a lot on my previous tablet but it didn't transfer progress so I have to start again!)
If anyone knows a way to unlock the later scenarios I'd love to know!
A few years back someone at Atari messed up and made the game free instead of putting it on sale. They had to unpublish the original and put a new version on. So that is one possible issue. The other one is that the cloud saving of progress on first version broke. I'm using this to my advantage by replaying the first version like it was new.
Also if you did have the first one you can send your playstore receipts to Atari and they'll give you a voucher for the new one.
The only way of unlocking them is by beating the ones before it.
There's also a native port of OpenRCT
Just started enjoying Sword Art Online: Integral Factor. Currently quests that I am playing take few minutes to finish. But I've heard that quests get more complex as the game goes on. Of course it's an MMORPG, so not everyone likes it.
Another recommendation is Slay the Spire.
Is it good
SAO: Integral Factor is in my opinion, the best SAO game on mobile.
Slay the Spire is amazing!
Balatro Brotato Dead cells BlazBlue entropy effect
hi everyone! i'm looking for games i can pick up and put down a few times a day when i have a few minutes at work and need something to stimulate my brain that isn't the endless pit of tiktok. i am trying to avoid paid apps and i never buy in-app purchases, but i don't mind watching ads for rewards (i can just turn my phone over). cute graphics are not a requirement, but i honestly can't handle horror/gore. the screenshot has the games that i've been playing the most in the past month or so.
Single/Multiplayer: Either
Genre: open to anything besides horror
Online/Offline: either
Monetization/Cost: free preferred
Portrait/Landscape: either
thanks for any reccomendations you have!
I've made a game demo of sorts, it's pretty short from start to finish but you can save and come back to it if you want, only issue with saving atm is your monsters' moves get reset if you've changed them.
It's basically a free pokemon clone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.FiredUpForge.TameTheWild
cool style, i'll check it out! thanks!
Play pass recently added dungeon clawler and it's been perfect for me for that
Tiny tower Vegas, by NimbleBit LLC. You use in-game cash and casino chips for upgrades, new floors and gamble. You can earn everything just by playing.
Too bad it got removed from the store but maybe someone at r/tinytower can provide a source for the apk file.
Dead cells is perfect for short bursts, then when you want to dive into it, you can do run after run for hours.
Yeah second to this. You can quit and save anytime during the run, doesn't need to be done in one go
that is a great feature, definitely makes the game more appealing to me! i feel like a lot of run based games won't let you save mid run
thank you! this looks beautiful, when i get paid at the end of the week i'll be checking this out!
Katana zero maybe?
this looks interesting, thanks! i haven't played many action games like this before
Time is limited these days, I usually get a 15 mins here for 30 mins there.
What games are your favourite to pick up and play in short bursts?
As much as I love games like KCD2, you can’t get much done in short timeframes.
What are your favourites?
Rocket league. 5 min games
5 min games usually last for 6-8 min or more depending on goals scored, overtime, etc.
Source: I’ve been playing RL since 2018, only still a plat, hard stuck, but okay with my rank. RL is different these days. Anyways, if you wanted to play a tourney and you had 10 minutes left to join, you could get one game in before the tourney and still have about 2-3 minutes after to register.
Lol, I uninstalled RL last year because it was affecting my mood. Just so toxic. I was diamond in 2s and I was grinding 1v1 too. My mood is better now.
It is a great game though!
sudoku?
That or minesweeper can be really good if you're into that kinda stuff
Grim Dawn 15-30 minutes to explore an area and unlock a new portal. so I play from portal to portal
Smart, playing until you reach a portal. This makes me wanna play it again on the Deck lol
How did you configure the controls? I could never get the controls to work properly in this game or the UI to fit the screen. Really wanted to play.
Do it, treat yourself, do it, it will always be only one portal, surely. Do it.
Hades.
Balatro
I love my deep-dive marathon RPG sessions and spending all day and night in Civ as much as the next guy, but I find I never know what to play when I only have 20-30 minutes to game before bed after being at work and class all day. Most of my games seem to be ones where I could hardly do much in a short amount of time, or would get sucked into playing more than I wanted to.

What games do you guys play when you know you can't dedicate several hours to playing?
I stopped playing this game simply because it's the opposite of a short session game. When I play action packed roguelikes I personally want the games to be no more than 10-20 minutes.
Slay the Spire, FTL. Stuff like that.
Slay the spire is such an addictive game. You can easily play it for 10 mins or 4 hours and you wouldn't know the difference.
> FTL
FTL has completely engrossed me in the past and an hour has gone by in what feels like 10 minutes.
Into the breach as well is a good short session game as well.
Depends on how far you make it. You can easily stretch one run into multiple hours depending on how much time you take per turn and how many islands you want to conquer.
While I do love EtG, the more you play it, the better you get, and the longer each session becomes!
Woah he said play for 20-30 minutes, not tell yourself you'll play that long, then justify playing a few more until you win, then getting a cool crate, opening it, then wanting to use the cosmetic in a match and therefore playing more games.
Word, that was my 'short' game of choice for a long time when I was playing a lot of PDX titles for my 'long' game.
One Finger Death Punch. Great “rhythm” game. You can literally play it with one finger but the action is so satisfying, despite the crude stick figures. The gameplay / levels can get repetitive but in short play sessions, it’s really fun.
Speaking of CSGO, recently got into wingman. That acn be quite a fun and quick game.
Same here. They’re quick games, takes like 5 seconds to find one and you get to use every weapon in the game.
So, i'm in a gaming rut where i don't have much time to play other than 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there. What are your top games where you can play for 10-15 minutes and still feel like you accomplished something. It should also be a game that doesn't take forever to load up.
Previously Enjoyed Games
: i think games like cauldron, Stardew, minishoot adventures, dome keeper, fields of mistria all seem to get into this. I would say a brotato/halls of torment type game does not because those runs can take a long time if you're doing good.Preferred Genres
: AnyBudget
: No budget constraintsOther Notes
: the main thing is that it's quick to load up and satisfying for smaller chunks. My current "low-energy, pick up and play a few minutes" game is Grindstone. It's quite addicting, but can be played in short sessions just fine. You always make progress by collecting stuff and beating the short levels.
You just missed the sale, though, it was just 2.50 euros. May be something for the wishlist!
The other game I play frequently in short bursts is Tetris Effect: Connected, which runs great on the Deck and looks amazing (supports HDR). It has an XP/level system and of course high scores, with many different modes and ways of playing. I bought this when it came out a few years back and still play it. I enjoy it much more in handheld mode than on a big screen. It even has weekend events where you can collect avatars, if that's your thing.
dorf romantik
vampire survivors
hades
balatro
dave the diver
slay the spire
cult of the lamb
nobody saves the world
binding of isaac
tetris effect
Enter the guneon
These all run phenomenally well on the deck, are cheap, and can be played in smaller chunks. I know you mentioned longer runs, but you can always suspend and resume later.
ETA: these are all recs from my personal library. I’m sure there are hundreds of others that fit the bill.
DAVE THE DIVER. I’m 2 weeks in and I didn’t know I could be this addicted to a game.
Ive only played for a few hours and the play loop is so short that it feels like it can't make up it's mind if it's going to be a diving game or a restaurant game. I prefer the diving part and it feel like I'm just getting interrupted from doing the fun part. Does it get any better?
I also didn’t know I couldn’t live without a Steam Deck until 2 weeks ago. I think DTD was the best first game I could have played on a Deck.
BoI isn't pick up and put down. It's pick up and play for 13 hours and rage quit.
This is pretty much my list. Roguelite/roguelikes are the best short gaming session games.
Hades. Blasphemous. Vampire Survivors. What the golf. As a gamer dad with a one year old, pick and play is everything to me.
YEA finally someone else mentioned What the Golf! I think that game is just criminally underrated and not talked about enough.
I played UFO 50 for over 60 hours and I've only played the first half of the games, haven't touched the rest yet. Such a great collection I really need to get back into.
If anyone has even a passing interest in retro style games, I highly recommend it. Not everything is a banger, but there's so much variety, there is bound to be something in there for you.
Totally forgot about Dredge. My ex got me into that game. ☹️
This is my recommendation too. Currently trying to beat Kick Club!
I am looking for games that are time consuming but can also be opened up and played for a few minutes. Playing AAA games takes a lot of commitment and focus. A few examples of games I find to fit the description: Peggle, Ravenous devils, Bloons, Fallout shelter.
Balatro
Vampire Survivors
Brotato
Slay the Spire
Bro slay the spire requires an hour+ long committment
Slay the spire depends on how well you know what everything does.
Me personally I don't have to read anything about cards or relics when I get them so I can finish a run in like 15 minutes.
But pause and come back when you want
Vampire Survivor levels are all 30 minutes long. If you want to complete one and not just bounce mid-run, you're gonna need that.
Though I guess if you're dying a lot early on, 5 minutes'll do the trick.
I personally cannot play balatro for only 5-20 minutes. It turns into hours
You cant play cyberpunk for 5 minutes a lot of the missions are hours long
Skate 1, 2, or 3
Along the same lines, Session or Skater XL.
And the OG Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
Rocket league
Hades
Best games for short play sessions
Key Considerations for Short Play Sessions:
Game Length: Look for games that can be completed in 15-30 minutes per session. This makes it easy to fit into a busy schedule.
Accessibility: Choose games that are easy to pick up and play without requiring extensive tutorials or long setups.
Replayability: Games with high replay value can keep you entertained over multiple short sessions.
Genre Preference: Consider what genres you enjoy (puzzle, platformer, card games, etc.) to ensure you have fun during your playtime.
Top Recommendations:
"Celeste" - A platformer that offers challenging levels and can be played in short bursts. Each level can be completed relatively quickly.
"Stardew Valley" - While it can be played for hours, you can easily manage short farming sessions, focusing on specific tasks like planting or harvesting.
"Mini Metro" - A minimalist puzzle game where you design subway maps. Each game lasts about 10-20 minutes, making it perfect for quick sessions.
"Into the Breach" - A turn-based strategy game that allows for quick tactical decisions. Each run can be completed in about 30 minutes.
"Slay the Spire" - A roguelike deck-building game that offers quick runs and strategic gameplay, with each session lasting around 20-30 minutes.
"Among Us" - A social deduction game that can be played in short rounds, making it great for quick gaming sessions with friends.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a game that balances challenge and accessibility, "Celeste" is a fantastic choice. It offers a rewarding experience in manageable chunks, and its story and mechanics keep you engaged without requiring long play sessions.
