TL;DR
Strategy and Simulation Games
Several users recommended Mini Metro, a transit simulation game that is praised for its intuitive gameplay and increasing difficulty. It's suitable for quick play sessions and can be enjoyed by both adults and children [1:2]
[1:5]. Another popular choice is Polytopia, a simple strategy game that can easily consume time and offers an engaging experience
[1:1].
Gacha and Resource Management
For those interested in gacha or resource management games, Azur Lane was highlighted as a generous game where players can enjoy the combat without spending money [1:4]
[1:6]. Additionally, Reigns offers a unique card-swiping mechanic to manage resources and solve kingdom problems, making it suitable for quick play
[1].
Bullet Hell and Action Games
Vampire Survivors is a highly recommended bullet hell game that provides hours of fun without relying on micro-transactions or timers [3:6]. A similar game, 20 Minutes Till Dawn, offers added challenges and abilities to unlock, providing a dynamic gameplay experience
[3:7].
Card and Deck Builders
For fans of card games, Slay The Spire is available on mobile and offers a deep deck-building experience. Although it's a paid game, many users have found it worth the cost due to its engaging gameplay [3:4]
[3:12]. Another option is Project Clean Earth, which combines bullet heaven mechanics with strategic elements
[3:3].
Emulators and Classic Games
Some users suggested using emulators to play classic console games on mobile devices. Emulators like DraStic for DS games allow players to enjoy old favorites with customizable controls and cheat codes [1:10]. This approach can offer a wide variety of games for quick play without additional costs.
Rather than just thumb mindlessly through Facebook when I'm waiting around for something, I like finding hidden gems in the android play store. A few of my recent ones include:
So what's everyone else playing?
Dunno how no one mentioned Mini Metro, it's a gem, and a real son of a bitch on the later levels.
Mini Metro is awesome on mobile. So intuitive that my six year old can pick it up and understand it immediately, but of course still quite difficult.
Mini metro is fantastic on PC, haven't played it on mobile but I imagine that mobile is a really good way to play it.
You can even go full meta and play Mini metro while on the metro. Did that on the Berlin metro last year and had a good chuckle tbh.
I keep forgetting about Mini Metro. I have it on both PC and mobile, but I think it's better on a touch screen
Desert Golfing - A good 2D golf game that is a 1-time purchase without ads or IAP.
Azur Lane - Don't judge me as the combat is fun and the game is generous with the gacha without having to pay a cent.
OP, since you're on Android you ought to look into emulators for consoles and games you own. Being able to play a turn-based RPG or something like that on the go could save a lot of money if you're looking for something to play.
Yep. I love it. Azur Lane is 100% my favorite gacha game. They actually give so many resources to summon and make it easy to level up your ships. Amazing - a mobage that ACTUALLY lets you play the game instead of locking absolutely everything down behind time gates and pay walls.
? It's free. Subscriptions available but not required. Everything is too damn small on my screen anyway, on a pixel xl. Might be playable on a tablet but I kept hitting the wrong thing so I got pissed off and uninstalled it hah.
Playing on a PSP emulator on my phone is a bit better than playing the FFT app. I've tried both, so I would recommend the former.
DraStic is a great DS emulator (original, not 3DS) for Android and you can find ROMs pretty easily if you yarrr now that Nintendo raided the more open ROM sites. It comes with built-in cheat codes for a lot of the games and you can change button location, screen sizes and displays, the whole deal. I caught up on the Pokemon series and saved myself a bunch of time by using an infinite Exp Share cheat so I didn't have to train the scrubs to my starter's level with grinding.
Yeah, uh, it has really taken off in the fan art community in Japan.
The gameplay once you're in is fun and the characters are "chibi"-fied so it isn't bad. It is just the hiding the screen until you're on the main menu deal.
Polytopia. It is very simple, but is a blast and easily eats up time.
Jak and Daxter: The percursor legacy, Jak 2, Jak 3, (Daxter for PSP), skip the Jak the lost frontier. Awesome trilogy. Jak X (spinoff racing game).
The Suffering games
Destroy all humans! 1 & 2
Mercenaries
True crime games
The Godfather
Scarface
Manhunt 1 & 2
The Punisher
The Warriors
GTA III & Vice City
Bully/Canis Canem Edit
Midnight club II & III
Dude Mercenaries and Destroy All Humans. Good calls.
Every single one is a banger. Scarface to me, was easily the 'A' game of the console.
Maybe the defjam games get added to the list as well?
FanTastic list
downhill domination
I literally rebought a PS2 to replay this game.
It still holds up so well! I have replayed a lot of other games from my childhood, and many were actually hot garbage. Downhill Domination I speak PS2 for me
Resident Evil 4, The Simpsons Hit and Run
RE4 is great but better played elsewhere.
How do you rate ssx tricky?
The game that must not be named.
if you’re in that early-2000s adrenaline lane (arcade racing/extreme sports), a few “must plays” you might wanna throw on the pile:
So many have too many ads. Too simple and so basically boring in about 10mins. Lots of build or Idle games. Just something that you can pick up now and then to pass the time for 30mins. No specific genre, but what games do you keep coming back to again and again. Don't even mind paying a bit for it.
Yeah, OP plz do try Genshin, even if you end up quitting it. I have played since launch which is 3 years, I am pretty sure it broke my record for mobile game. It didn't get nominated award for no reason.
Vampire Survivors. It’s a fun addictive game that isn’t based around milking you for micro-transactions or gating progress behind timers and energy.
ProjectCleanEarth is another great bullet heaven and imo actually involves some skill and range of enemy types unlike most.
It’s technically “free” but it’s 6$ I think to make it playable (disable ads, which gives you essentially infinite playtime)
It does have a progression system that involves grinding, but it’s extremely fast compared to most mobile games (cough hoopo games).
20 mins till dawn is another game similar to vampire survivors, but I find that even towards the end of a run. I can't just stand there tanking all the enemies. it's very doable with lots of added challenges of u want to, tons of abilities to unlock, and no ads
Free - Vampire Survivors
Has 4 player couch co-op and playable offline.
2 currently available DLC packs for additional characters to play, items, and maps, which as dirt cheap. Like $1-$3 not on sale.
Bullet hell + 8-bit Castlevania inspired themes + SICK OST + >180 things to unlock leave for hours of lost time and fun.
Paid - Bloons TD 6
Has online co-op, solo play, boss battles, clan battles, custom levels and map maker. Make an account with them and content is accessible cross-platforms, and this one is available on almost all platforms.
What I would consider pro consumer currency systems, so no pay to win and/or content can be bought with in game currencys.
Example being the recently added map maker and player map browsers to share and play. You can pay real money to unlock it or "X" in game currency.
They could have kept it pay walled. They could have made it an entirely new game entry in their franchise of several dozen "Bloons" games. They could have made the DLC exclusive to those who paid and seperate from the rest of Bloons TD 6 stuff.
But they implemented it to their flagship title by making player made maps accessible to all, and keep the Map Creator behind a DLC purchase with real money or in-game currency of reasonable amounts to those specifically desiring to make new maps rather than play new maps.
Bloons started out as a Flash game franchise on Newgrounds and is still made by the same people/company today, Ninja Kiwi.
Also here is a huge bonus, IF YOU HAVE A NETFLIX ACCOUNT YOU GET IT FREE.
Vampire Survivors is based off the Korean game (of which there's an an English port on Android) Magic Survival, which, imo, is better in many ways and recently had a great update. Highly recommended if you're looking for something similar. It also doesn't rely on micro-transactions/timers/energy.
Yes. Usually you have to pay though.
I've been playing the card game Slay The Spire on Xbox Game pass but was curious about mobile and it exists. Can't vouch for the mobile quality though such as bugs.
If you like "deck builders" I feel it's worth the cost of $10. I put many, many hours into it.
I've put more time into this game than I should admit. The mobile port is really good, just a battery killer.
If you like card games, it's arguably one of the best ever made, and well worth the $7 it is on the app stores.
It's not quite as good as the pc version, but that's mostly because there are no mods.
Peglin is also great.
I'm currently trying to get into it on Playstation. It is fun, although I do feel a little lost; you can definitely tell you're starting a game that's 2-3 years into live service.
The wish system and how to prioritise all the different currency makes my brain hurt a little.
Thankfully it's the type of game you really don't need to go crazy on. Do daily quests for the primogems, spend your resin/energy so it's not a waste, and then do whatever you want after that. Main quests, side quests, just exploring and opening treasure chests, it's very chill.
Is that fun? Just sounds like an idle game, which is what OP specifically didn't want.
On the topic of gacha, there's a skill card based Monopoly clone called Game of Dice that I always enjoy hopping into a match for when I'm bored. Feels genuinely great to play a game like that with far less random chance and far more active strategy involved. Just like Genshin, you can pay for better cards and such, but you can absolutely play that game free and still win plenty of the time
Poor neglected doggo!
Well... Did you throw it???
Of course, multiple times!

EDIT: I initially made this post with this sub’s flair “Video Review”. I understand that many people are upset with me making this post because it wasn’t entirely text-based. I’m confused as to why this flair is available if this sub’s community doesn’t want the content that the flair was made for.
I would like to suggest for mods to remove the flair to discourage future posters from experiencing a similar debacle. I was simply trying to help others find some fun mobile games to play. Thanks.

So far, 2022 has had countless mobile game releases and each year seems to have more than the last. The amount of games mobile gamers have to sift through nowadays is absolutely staggering. It can be a HUGE pain to sort out the good stuff from the bad stuff.
That’s why I have consistently created video compilations of games I enjoy (along with brief descriptions of each) in the hopes that it will help others avoid the bad stuff all together.
Here are all of the mobile gaming list videos I have created this year. If you have any questions for a specific suggestion or game, please let me know in the comments down below! I’m happy to help!
I hope y’all are staying safe and take it easy!

OP can't be bothered to check is game even exists for Android... so....
Example: Builderment game from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_NK0ay6W5s.
Developer currently don't have plans to bring this game to Android at all.
I'm new to this series. Super awesome.
One suggestion I have is to repeat the name of the game at the end of the section, or to have it in view the whole time. Because right now, after watching a game and I'm interested, I have to go back to the start to find out what the name was.
That’s a great suggestion that I haven’t gotten before! Thank you!
Thank you, installed 4 new games to try after your videos!
I have Google Reward credit to burn... looks like I've got some YouTube to watch :P
I got 200 from downloading apps for a day, and I never understood what am i supposed to use it for (except for getting higher rank?)
Those are points you earn in games that you can use for unlockables in other games.
I was referring to the Google Rewards survey app. You actually earn credit in the Google Play store for answering surveys. However the credit only lasts a year and I've got to spend it on something.
I have a friend that uses it on movies. I use it on apps and games.
I didn't find it hard, he put chapter breaks into the videos so you can see the games in each list dragging across. Seems he put a fair amount of effort into them.
Thanks for the list, found lots of games
You dont have to watch all genius, just pick the type of mobile games you like to play and the corresponding video. Seems you a new account or troll.
Or they could have just made a list with the actual links to the games in them, which is not only faster to read, it's faster work for them as well. You have your opinion and I have mine, but the majority here would rather read than watch an annoying video.
At the very least list the games in the video description or comments. I appreciate the effort you put in, but just don't have an hour to watch all of this.
Maybe you guys are having some ideas? I wanted to do a little bit of gaming on my phone, nothing special. I am opened to all types of games [ RPG, idle, shooter etc ].
Playdigious publisher is from France and has a lot of good ports:
Evoland
Northgard
Dead Cells
505 Games is Italian
Killhouse Games is Romanian
11 Bit Studios is Polish
CD Project is Polish
Thronebreaker
Gwent
HandyGames is German
Through the darkest of Times
Wreckfest
Neighbors from Hell
ChickencPolice: Paint it Red!
Team 17 is British
Highly recommend This war of mine, though I haven't tried it on Mobile platforms.
+1 For the Evoland series. It's really good
Huge list, thank you! I see that I will have a mobile game afternoon xD
https://nordcurrent.com/games-page/ - They have Cooking Fever and a few other mobile games.
I think this one is based in berlin Germany, but honestly, I have not played any of their games.
Thank You! I will try their games!
The mining game is quite addictive and wel done, but not exactly very meaningful
Metacore (Merge Mansion) is Finnish. But Supercell (Tencent) is an investor. Not ownership, as far a I know, but the connection is there, but at least it's not straight up ownership (yet). It's kind of frustrating because Supecell used to be Finnish too. Europe just seems to like to sell its companies and own nothing.
Yes, disappointing... I used to play Boom Beach when I was younger [ max level, guild owner, etc ] but then I went to college and stopped the mobile gaming grind. Now I don't want to go back to boom beach just because of this thing. Good memories but I don't go back.
Tencent is the majority owner of the mobile game developer Supercell, controlling over 70% of its shares through a consortium called Halti S.A.
Sea Port is from Slovakia, Handygames (germn, owned by THQ Nordic / Embracer from Sweden) do have a few titles, but don‘t expect AAA quality…
Probably Slay the Spire or Vampire Survivors.
Doesnt slay the spire crushes often? I heared its not a good port for android
I haven't found that myself. I think it saves after every turn as well, so if your phone dies or something you shouldn't lose any progress.
didnt you try Magic survival?
Finally someone mentions really good games. Most comments are talking about quite mid titles.
Sudoku. been playing one for months
check out BlockuDoku. It's a mix of sudoku and tetris
My boy! Is my favorite, pizza boy is hugely popular
Swordigo
Game boy advance emulator and a decent collection of roms
Unlocked the secret levels
Looking for a game simple and fun enough to hop on for a little if I feel like it but fun and engaging enough to keep me busy for hours if I choose.
What are your go-to games?
Just started enjoying Sword Art Online: Integral Factor. Currently quests that I am playing take few minutes to finish. But I've heard that quests get more complex as the game goes on. Of course it's an MMORPG, so not everyone likes it.
Another recommendation is Slay the Spire.
Is it good
SAO: Integral Factor is in my opinion, the best SAO game on mobile.
Slay the Spire is amazing!
Shattered Pixel Dungeon (it's freeware on Android! :) )
Slice & Dice
Tiny Bubbles
Race for the Galaxy
Dominion
balatro. It's a deck building roguelike.
Fun game, but it really seems to burn through my battery more than any other game I have. Even rather detailed 3D games.
Funny I got balarto and was super addicted at first playing it almost for 24 hours straight and after never had a desire to go back. Weird
Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic. It's a port of RCT2 but with the scenarios from RCT1 and the expansion packs remade. 90 scenarios in the base game. Here's a video if you're interested.
I love this game, but it bugs me that the scenarios are locked until you complete earlier ones. So many scenarios have the same goal, eg play for 3 years. I often want a more long term goal without a time limit, but the later scenarios are unavailable.
(Also, I played this a lot on my previous tablet but it didn't transfer progress so I have to start again!)
If anyone knows a way to unlock the later scenarios I'd love to know!
A few years back someone at Atari messed up and made the game free instead of putting it on sale. They had to unpublish the original and put a new version on. So that is one possible issue. The other one is that the cloud saving of progress on first version broke. I'm using this to my advantage by replaying the first version like it was new.
Also if you did have the first one you can send your playstore receipts to Atari and they'll give you a voucher for the new one.
The only way of unlocking them is by beating the ones before it.
There's also a native port of OpenRCT
Balatro Brotato Dead cells BlazBlue entropy effect
hi everyone! i'm looking for games i can pick up and put down a few times a day when i have a few minutes at work and need something to stimulate my brain that isn't the endless pit of tiktok. i am trying to avoid paid apps and i never buy in-app purchases, but i don't mind watching ads for rewards (i can just turn my phone over). cute graphics are not a requirement, but i honestly can't handle horror/gore. the screenshot has the games that i've been playing the most in the past month or so.
Single/Multiplayer: Either
Genre: open to anything besides horror
Online/Offline: either
Monetization/Cost: free preferred
Portrait/Landscape: either
thanks for any reccomendations you have!
Dead cells is perfect for short bursts, then when you want to dive into it, you can do run after run for hours.
Yeah second to this. You can quit and save anytime during the run, doesn't need to be done in one go
that is a great feature, definitely makes the game more appealing to me! i feel like a lot of run based games won't let you save mid run
thank you! this looks beautiful, when i get paid at the end of the week i'll be checking this out!
Play pass recently added dungeon clawler and it's been perfect for me for that
Tiny tower Vegas, by NimbleBit LLC. You use in-game cash and casino chips for upgrades, new floors and gamble. You can earn everything just by playing.
Too bad it got removed from the store but maybe someone at r/tinytower can provide a source for the apk file.
Katana zero maybe?
this looks interesting, thanks! i haven't played many action games like this before
I've made a game demo of sorts, it's pretty short from start to finish but you can save and come back to it if you want, only issue with saving atm is your monsters' moves get reset if you've changed them.
It's basically a free pokemon clone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.FiredUpForge.TameTheWild
cool style, i'll check it out! thanks!
There's a lot of intermittent down time at my job and I don't have much entertainment. I get my job done there's just a lot of waiting around for tasks.
Balatro can hold my attention for hours, and I’m normally not really interested in card games. Might be worth a go!
Ooh I love this on PC I think I'll try it on mobile too!
It's amazing on mobile
If you like card games, I can’t recommend slay the spire enough! Both my partner and I loveee it. It’s highly replayable, tons of difficult unlocks, and a pretty quick learning curve. She also had a bunch of downtime and often will be able to play a few runs at a time. It can also be easily put down and picked up if something else calls your attention!!!
Ooh I've heard nothing but good things about this game, I think I'll try it out. Thanks!!
If you like point click puzzles the Rusty Lake / Cube Escape games are really good (they’re confusing but that’s part of it and the more you play the plot does get revealed). Majority are free too.
Try Usagi Shima! It's very cute.
Following because I am in the same predictament lol. Thanks for posting, OP!
No prob :D
