When you have just a few minutes to spare, finding the right game that is engaging yet easy to pause can be a challenge. Here are some of the top recommendations from various discussions:
Idle and Puzzle Games
Idle games and simple puzzle games are perfect for short breaks as they allow you to make progress without requiring constant attention. "Pixel Dungeon" is frequently recommended for its quick gameplay sessions [2:1]. Similarly, "Pixel Puzzle" offers a stress-free experience with no ads, making it ideal for brief playtimes
[4:1].
Quick Action and Arcade Games
For those who enjoy a bit more action, games like "Jetpack Joyride" and "Subway Surfers" offer fast-paced thrills that fit well into short breaks [1:2],
[1:1]. These games are designed for quick rounds, allowing you to jump in and out easily.
Strategy and Roguelike Games
If you prefer strategy or roguelike elements, "Slay the Spire" is an engaging option that many users find perfect for 30-minute sessions [3:1],
[3:3]. For shorter bursts, "Slice & Dice" provides a solid mobile version where runs can be paused at any time
[3:4].
Casual and Offline Options
For offline play, "Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection" offers a variety of puzzles that can be adjusted for different session lengths [5:5]. Another option is "Polytopia," which features a Perfection mode limited to 30 turns, making it suitable for quick gaming sessions
[5:4].
Unique Picks
For something different, "Baba Is You" offers unique puzzle mechanics that challenge your problem-solving skills [5:7]. Additionally, "Professor Layton" games combine mystery stories with smaller puzzle games, providing both narrative and gameplay satisfaction
[5:8].
These games cater to a variety of preferences and ensure that even the shortest breaks can be enjoyable and rewarding. Whether you're looking for a quick mental challenge or a brief escape, there's likely a game here that fits your needs.
I'm looking for a game which I can play during short breaks at work. A game which I'll open while sitting in a toilet, check my progress and go. Can you recommend something?
The best example I've found is Fallout Shelter.
I usually play Uno in my breaks lol Anyone here tried Dice Dreams or any games on this app Plutus? I have been playing Boulder Blast on it which is pretty fun but don’t like that Escape run game… Suggest more racing games pls? Something like Subway Surfers and Temple run
Tons of idle games better than Shelter.
Kairosoft stuff, shop titans
I'm working on a roguelike space shooter right now that fits this in my opinion. Let me know if you want the beta
Sorry for the intrusion but anyway I can get in the beta?
Did I hear someone say space game? Any info?
I'll take a peek too if you're ok with that!
Yeah, why not :)
had me at space
Toon blast
Shattered Pixel Dungeon
Hey Guys, i need a mobile Game that suits toilet breaks well. Like only playing for 5 minutes but still making Progress to a bigger goal. I used to play candy crush, but that got tedious after awhile because of ads and all that clutter they put into it and now im just scrolling through Reddit for 10 minutes. Any recommendations?
Riddlemoji - simple emoji puzzle game, no ads
any supercell game besides hay day
Supercell isn't that great anymore.
Magical cat rescue
Wordjazz
Traffic jam 3d nitro
I hope you like one of them :)
Try Triglav
Pixel Dungeon! I find myself hopping on whenever I have 5 minutes, and sometimes end up getting involved for hours.
I need a game that's fun but not too addictive that will make me want to play the entire day (no Cities Skylines, no Civ6, "one more turn" type of games). I'm looking for one that will help me unwind in between study sessions and that I can freely pause and save every 30minutes or so.
if you enjoyed vampire survivors, 20 Minutes Till Dawn is similar but rounds are only 20 minutes. So you could give yourself one or two rounds and then get back to work
If you haven't played it then vampire survivors itself is very fun but more compulsively addicting since you can play for a LONG time, so I would recommend it in general but not for your purposes haha
Slay the Spire for sure
I heard about Slay the Spire and people tell me it's hella addictive!
One game of Slay the Spire takes maybe 45 minutes. Once the game is done you won't want to start a new run immediately. It's not really addicting but very engaging and fun!
It’s addicting in the sense that it’s fantastic and has great mechanics. The thing that will likely work in your favor is that a run is anywhere from 30mins - 1 hour. This means that once one is done, you can’t just play for 5 more minutes because then you’ll be in the middle of a run, so it’s easier just to play one and then move on.
Third slay the spire! I don't feel "addiction" feelings about it but when I wanna pass some time it's soooo perfect. Great to chill out for 20 mins, or make a 12 hour plane ride zoom by. All in all great game and you can pause or take a break any time.
A lot of roguelites can be played in about an hour but without knowing your game preferences, I would say Slice & Dice Has a solid mobile version and the runs are usually about an hour, but you can pause a run at anytime.
I love that game...I play it on my phone when I am in public transport or something.
me personally I love playing Balatro on my phone during breaks at work, although it may be difficult to stop if you do have the option to just keep going, though it may just be my inner gambling addict in denial
Came to say exactly this. Love the game but I end up playing 15-45 minutes at a time.
Please suggest good casual games to play for only timepass for just 10 to 30min a day
Capital Kings - If you like Monopoly but want something edgier. It's a darker, real-world empire builder where you buy real businesses around the globe (without the dice rolling), just strategy and power plays.
get.capitalkings.app
Summoners War
Grand Cross
If you're just looking for a casual game to kill 10–30 minutes a day, I'd recommend Pixel Puzzle! It's a chill logic puzzle game where you tap tiles to reveal a hidden image — easy to pick up, no stress, and perfect for short sessions.
It’s free and currently ad-free, so no interruptions either.
Here’s the Android link if you want to try it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.garajprojeleri.pixelpuzzle&utm_source=emea_Med
Great for quick brain breaks without any grind!
I do a decent amount of train travel and although I usually have my steamdeck with me I sometimes just want to jump on my phone for a quick distraction. So looking for games that are offline, quick to jump in an out of without too much trouble.
Paid is fine. I've enjoyed 1,000,000, You Must Build a Boat, Slice and Dice before. I'd say something like Slay the Spire is a little too long for each session.
Not exactly puzzle, but I been having fun with Polytopia. Perfection mode is only 30 turns, so hopefully that's short enough.
In the same vein, I'd also recommend Unciv. Although for short play sessions you have to exercise self-control...
I been having fun with Polytopia
Second Polytopia for this style of gaming.
My list of premium Android games.
The Puzzle section will pretty much all work.
For non-puzzles that are quick (load quickly, and can either suspend and save, or played in very small bites)....
Age of Rivals, One Deck Dungeon, Encore, Bravo
Toe-II-Toe, Retro Abyss, INKS, Badland
Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection
Underrated
Do you mean misunderrated
😎
End thread. OP, this is all you need. Theres 40 different puzzle games. Some are very well known, others not so much. Most if not all of the puzzles are also configurable so you can set it up so individual games can take you 30 seconds or a few minutes or potentially longer depending on what you want. The games are randomized so you wont run out of levels or anything like that. And its free.
Baba Is You might be worth checking out.
I'm not familiar with the other games you mentioned so it might be a little different if you're looking for something specific.
The professor Layton games are really good. They are mystery stories that you solve by playing smaller games.
Been wanting to get into it on the Switch, didn’t know it was on mobile.
Is it sort of story based? Will I need to have memory of the story? Planning to play it intermittently…
I've been playing polytopia with a few friends and it's great when they actually play but they have lives and can't always take a turn. I'm just looking for something super small/cozy/simple to play during breaks and downtime.
Maybe check out "Shapeshifter" or "RotatoR" by Wolfpit Games.
Definitelly, U need try:
-Solaris(and/or Subterfuge)
Conquest! (Please note - the exclamation mark is part of the title)
Also Spacecom are very interesting game, premium, but really nice
Lucky Luna, Katana Zero
These look fun I'm definitely grabbing
Do you want to try mobile puzzle games?
Sure!
I’m currently looking for a new casual game to get into for times when I don’t feel like getting 100% focused on a gripping story or sweating my balls off in some competitive game mode. What are y’all’s favorite casual games? Looking for some recommendations.
any single player open world game, i can just chill and relax
I find I can return to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom any time because it’s so intuitive and it’s naturally austere and calm outside of the story events. I’ll just run through a forest, ride past some wildlife, find a Korok under a statue in the woods or something. Very easy to jump in and relax.
Diablo 2. Mindless, Cathartic, repetitive, rewarding. It’s like gambling every time you kill a monster but you aren’t spending any real money.
Stardew Valley
Fallout 76. Run around, shoot dudes, grab loot, store at base, rinse and repeat
My go-to game might not be the same as your go-to game. I like Donkey Kong Country on the Gameboy Pocket. The old black and white version.
I've passed it many times but I still like playing it because it's still fun, challenging, and relaxing. I like the music. Plus I like the fact that I can play it somewhere in public if im bored or waiting.
Black and white Donkey Kong Country? Did you mean Donkey Kong Land? If yes - I agree, it's a nice overlooked game IMO. And the soundtrack slaps - sometimes I liked it even more than the SNES one.
Hi all,
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but what are the best games to be played in short bursts, like when you have ~30 minutes to kill, among the games that epic has given away for free? I don't think i have all of them, but I should have everything since Civ6 I guess.
Similar games that I enjoyed (also from Epic) are Into the breach and Defense grid the awakening. I tried Enter the gungeon, but not really my cup of tea.
Thanks!
You can try Hades. I play it for 30-60 mins daily after office. Doesn't requires too much effort and gameplay is good too. You can try r/ShouldIbuythisgame for better recommendations.
He said among the games Epic has given out for free.
RimWorld. New update version is releasing on Tuesday. The game has a day/night cycle. So it's easy to play a day or two at a time. It's basically like Sims in space. You have to keep track of their hunger, rest, comfort, recreation, beauty surroundings. All to contribute to their overall mood.
But there's much more to it than Sims. And honestly, despite much lower-end graphics/budget, I find RimWorld to be a superior game. Since you get survival and combat aspects. You crash land on an outer rim planet. So it's like a frontier world with scattered settlements similar to cowboys (outlanders) and indians (tribals). There will be friendlies and hostiles among them. There is also an empire who is interested in the planet, as well as the presence of a dangerous alien species. So quests come up once in awhile regarding what is going on. But all the while, the main thing is taking care of your sims, surviving, and building up your settlement. While keeping up moods. Gathering resources from the environment, chopping wood, foraging berries, hunting, mining, farming, building up your main settlement, setting up a safe base, furniture, trading with other settlements, crafting (clothes, weapons, gear), research to unlock better tech for better living standards, travel across the planet in a caravan, etc.

EDIT: Just to address some of the responses here. Yes, just like Sims, this game is extremely addictive. The day/night cycle is convenient. You can set the schedule for when your sims sleep, wake up, do recreation, and get to work on their tasks. So an example of playing this game will be to get on, and go through a few days of game time. When you're about to finish, wait till night when all your sims are in bed. You can save the game, and exit. Then pick up next time to continue when your sims wake up the next morning. This is what I do. However, since this game is addictive, most users just continue, and lose their real life. Sometimes hours and hours of playing can go by like it's nothing. And before you know it, a few days just went by in the real world.
OP said short bursts, not an entire sleepless month of war crimes
You COULD play in small seperate bursts.... But you definitely won't
I think that you are describing FTL. You can play 5 hours or three minutes and you are going to have fun.
And is a hugely wonderful game
With an amazing sound track!
Hand of Fate 2
One of the biggest suprises I've ever come across. It was given away for free on Epic a while back and I booted it up just to see what it was like. It was a little confusing at first but before long I was hooked!
I don't think there really is anything else like it on the market, but it's perfect for short burst gaming. It has multiple little campaigns and you can just stop part way through a longer campaign and carry on later.
It's a fantastic game.
I see it on my list, I'll give it a try!
If you need any tips to get started, just ask!
Never heard of it before, but I just tried it and I LOVED it.
Thanks! Have my free gift
thanks man for my first gift. Appreciate it.
Sometimes when studying I like to take brief breaks of around 10 minutes or so and play a game. So far the best game I've found for this is Downwell. It's a simple little game with short runs that doesn't require much thinking so I can just switch off and play.
I think that roguelikes are good for these breaks because I can sometimes fit one run into a break, or maybe one floor or level. I'm open to considering other types of games though.
I'm considering PC and Switch games.
Slay the Spire has roughly 10-minute-or-under battles. It's turn-based and saves after each battle, so you can always walk away to do something important.
Noita lets you save anywhere, anytime, so that's another "walk away when real life calls" game that may fit your needs.
1 up for slay the spire. I play that a lot during study breaks
Careful now. I used to start slay the spire just to warm up and ended up playing it for hours. Just one more run is very strong.
While I agree with your recommendation, my RUNS on slay the spire only take 40 minutes max, 10 minute battles seems loooooong!!
Yeah, I should've written "battles in under 10 minutes." A single battle lasting 10 minutes would be unusually long. Unless you stepped away to grab some snacks.
I will recommend vault of the void over slay the spire. More interesting, more fleshed out, UI is better, tooltips are better, quality of life settings... In general just a much better game than slay the spire
Too many hours lost to this one….too many…..
I know Book of Demons has mission/run length settings, and if I'm not mistaken, they could be set to pretty short times.
Here's a list of the best rogue-lites in my opinion:
FTL is, to this day, my pick for greatest indie game of all time... I see you there Minecraft. But FTL kept it's 'tegrity.
Vampire survivors on steam is £4 and worth a shot
Katana Zero. And Dead Cells, maybe.
So, I work a desk job, and I have intermittent periods of nothing along the day. Before it comes up, I won't have problems because of playing at work, as long as it does not affect my work, which it won't.
The idle periods I have are random and spread out along the day... 20 minutes here, 10 there, 30 more after lunch, etc. they are currently occupied by browsing reddit and similar stuff.
I would like to play some sort of game I can interrupt abruptly when work comes, and play in short sessions, but not a game based on waiting (like, set to build a farm and it taking 30 minutes real time).
I like management and building games, incremental growth, placing rooms/buildings, that sort of thing. Stuff where there is planning, but not puzzles or stuff you have to think a lot.
Something like oxygen not included (but pausable and where you don't die if you do stuff slowly or sporadically) would be nice.
No action/racing/fighting/clicking games please.
It could be browser based or windows (I could even buy the game if it's really good) but it should be playable in a smallish window so I can check on work semi-constantly.
Any suggestion is appreciated :)
Thanks!
Slay the spire. It's a good game to take up a 20-30 minute chunk of time, and it's easy to slide back into an ongoing run. It's a Rouge like deck builder dungeon game, currently has 3 characters, but the devs are adding a 4th soon
Stardew Valley
I tried stardew valley at home, but it feels too complex to play in such short sessions... I bet 90% of the time I won't remember what I was doing. not to even mention the long-term stuff.
Banished might be up your alley
I've looked at it several times, but it looks a bit unforgiving. I will probably forget to plant a wheat farm on week 7 and then everyone will die a cold and miserable death.
Or is it not that harsh (only seen let's plays)?
It's been a while since I played it last, but I'm pretty sure it has a few difficulty settings.
I'll check when I have a chance.
A roguelike would be perfect for your situation, since any individual run typically takes about 5-15 minutes (depending on the game). The one that I think you would work well for you (as well as being one of my favorites) is FTL: Faster Than Light.
It’s easy to stop at any moment and you have to think ahead to make strategic decisions. There is real-time combat with other spaceships, but the game lets you pause at any moment to make tactical decisions, change around the weapons you have equipped, and manage power to the carious systems. There is also a windowed mode.
I've played quite a bit of FTL already, it's an amazing game :)
It’s absolutely fantastic :)
