TL;DR
Popular Brands
Several brands were frequently recommended across discussions. Lifefactory glass bottles are praised for their protective silicone sleeve and being free from harmful chemicals like BPA, phthalates, PVC, and lead [2:5]. Soulbottles from Germany are noted for their quality, though they come at a higher price point
[3:3]. ZULU bottles also received positive feedback for their durability and customer service, with features like a silicone wrap and pop-top lid
[4:2].
Durability and Protection
Glass water bottles can be prone to breaking, so many users recommend using a silicone sleeve to protect the bottle from drops [2:2],
[4:2]. Some users have successfully used mason jars or reused juice bottles as a cost-effective alternative, often pairing them with silicone sleeves or other protective covers
[3:6],
[5:2].
Lid Materials and Design
Concerns about plastic lids introducing microplastics into the water were mentioned, leading some users to opt for bottles with alternative lid materials. Options include ceramic lids with rubber gaskets or bamboo lids with stainless steel linings [3:1],
[5:5]. For those looking to avoid plastic entirely, it's important to ensure that the drinking spout and any internal components are also plastic-free.
Alternative Suggestions
For those who want to avoid glass due to restrictions in certain areas (such as beaches or parks), metal alternatives like Yeti bottles were suggested, although concerns about lead content in some models were raised [5:1],
[5:8]. Additionally, collapsible silicone bottles offer a portable option for travel, though they may impart a taste to the water over time
[5:3].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While glass bottles are an eco-friendly choice, consider your lifestyle and where you'll be using the bottle. If you need something more durable for outdoor activities, a high-quality stainless steel bottle might be a better fit. Always check for compatibility with your needs, such as ease of cleaning, portability, and whether it can handle hot or cold liquids effectively.
Hi,
I am looking to buy a glass bottle for drinking water. The main characteristics I am looking for is for it to be 'safe' (i.e. non-BPA/no lead/ no cadmium/ etc.).
I have been reading lots of online reviews about this very topic. However, I would be keen for people to share their thoughts on comparisons between the following products. Lots of the lids are plastic, so I don't know whether I should be concerned about that (is there any micro-plastics that could enter the water) and should I just opt for options that have wood lids?
Products: (no particular order)
- Lifefactory glass bottle
- Yomious glass bottle
- Takeya glass bottle
- Retap water bottle
(or any others that I am missing). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I can’t say I’ve ever met someone who actively uses a glass water bottle. Seems like something that would break very easily. I’m pretty sure Nalgene is your best bet to be honest.
I’ve been using a Sobe bottle from 2003. Literally indestructible.
I’ll add Hydrojug as another glass option - the Arctic Glass jug holds 64oz and has a silicone sleeve to prevent breaking. You can use with straw or not. Definitely a favorite.
Thank you for the suggestion, I will take a look into that!
Does anyone have a glass water bottle? And how is it? My work requires clear bottles and I'm thinking of getting one. Let me know any good brands if they're worth it please!
I have one and it’s great! I highly suggest recommend a silicone (or other material if you don’t want plastics) to cover it. Most brands on Amazon will work, just check what kind of glass it is. Mine is a no name brand off Amazon and come with a stainless steel strainer for tea/fruit
You can also buy directly from a lot of the companies that make such water bottles.
Lifefactory glass bottle sleeve included
“No taste transfer or harmful chemicals
100 percent medical grade protective silicone sleeve – non slip gripping
Dishwasher safe
BPA/BPS free
Phthalate, PVC and lead free”
I've been using these for years and am happy with them. Dropped plenty of times and only once has one broken.
Lately I've wondered about the plastic lid though, considering some studies about glass bottled drinks having microplastics from the lid. Gasket is silicone but threading is glass against plastic, and that's what I drink from. Seems minor if an issue at all, though. And these are much easier to clean than any bottle I could seal with a cork.
Look up “glass hermetic bottles”
Isn't the top plastic?
You can swap for a wine cork. I've done that with the store brand kombucha bottles, sourcing the larger size cork took some time creativity and whittling it down with a knife.
You are going to need some tight gasket there, either silicone or cork.
I use this one which has a glass lid and silicone fir tree seal
That one looks thick/heavy.
It's glass, if you want convenience, well convenience = plastic. Choose your poison.
You can also find them directly from the manufacturer rather than supporting Amazon.
Binkmade.com!
Literally own several and are my favorite glass water bottles. I own the 27oz ones and mini.
I'm in the market for a new water bottle as mine broke. I'm looking for a glass one instead of plastic this time and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for some?
I was looking at life factory (the price seemed decent), but I don't like wide openings as I have a harder time drinking from them, usually making a mess, and the reviews for their flip cap says they leak. It's a travel bottle so it needs to be fine sitting on its side. I feel like this is a lot to ask for a recommendation, but I'm having a hard time finding any as I am trying to avoid Amazon.
I've always bought mine at the local TJMaxx. They have quite a good selection of glass bottles covered in silicone sleeves. My last bottle has a bamboo top, with just a little bit of plastic inside.
Soul bottles from Germany are spendy but work great: https://www.soulbottles.de/en/shop/soulbottles/
Second this. As a US shop owner, I researched for months and finally decided this was the bottle for us. Happy that they are made of glass, ceramic lid, rubber gasket, and small amount of metal for the fastener. Their glass bottles are made in Germany.
Do you have a website and ship your products? I’m US based and it’s hard to find these Soul Bottles without international shipping.
Mason jar
Every time I use a mason jar for a water bottle it leaks. What lids do you use? Without sealing the standard lid + band leaks, and I also have a few plastic screw on lids that leak.
I use a steel water bottle, not a glass one. But when I do drink from a mason jar, I use a coffee mug style lid that I found on Amazon that has a silicone seal, a better option would be a steel lid from Package Free Shop in a similar style. But with that I don’t think it can just be thrown into a pack, it would spill.
I picked up a silicone sleeve for a standard mason jar size so I can toss it in a backpack or use it for hot liquids. Very handy.
For a glass bottle at home; i just reuse an apple juice bottle. The fancy/nice one are in a big glass bottle.
Go to the store and get something in a glass bottle with a metal screw top lid or ceramic lever lid. Look in both the tonic/soda section and condiments, the variety is surprisingly huge. The ceramic lever lid bottles are also very easy to find second-hand. If you’re gonna have your bottle in a backpack, they are likely to break eventually, so it just sucks to get an fancy and pricey bottle from a store. You can get a beer cozy to protect it or sew your own. I’ve seen quilted bottle protectors which are super cute!
Looking for the best glass water bottles on market for home use only
I have a couple ZULUs, they have a silicone wrap so you can drop them and a pop top lid, I like them. They have great customer service too, mine developed an issue after a few months and they sent me a new one
Mason jar with a lid. Stop overcomplicating it.
I have a set of Boroux bottles.
You just saved me. I was looking for these forever and couldn’t find the name anywhere haha thanks so much! I thought I was going to have to buy evervessel lol
Looking for an all glass water bottle or 100% plastic free / synthetic free. Been reading abit on how bad plastics are bad for you and their estrogenic properties. Alot of the glass bottles ive found have a plastic drinking mouth pieces which I want to avoid. Was wondering anyone here would have any product recommendations?
Cheers
Reuse a juice or kombucha/kefir bottle. The kombucha/kefir ones come with generally very well sealing lids (to keep the bubbles in.) I reuse them for years for various things (I bought 3 specifically to keep the bottles). Also I have found excellent glass water bottles with silicone at the thrift store.
FYI, some places ban glass water bottles. For example many beaches or parks don't allow them. You may want to consider a metal alternative or have a backup of another material.
This is great advice. I have a glass water bottle with a silicone sleeve and wooden lid for home, but a collapsible silicone water bottle for when I travel/go out. It's not my favorite bc it gives the water a taste after a while, but I don't have to worry about it breaking or not being allowed somewhere.
When silicone locks in a flavor/scent- you can bake it in the oven to release the funk. Works with silicone ice trays anyway
Yeti or knock-off stainless steel bottles. Double wall for insulation.
I have large mugs that hold ice for 12 hours.
Yeti and the like unfortunately have lead
I have heard that but I think the lead is sealed in the stainless walls so the water never touches the lead. It’s there just as a weight in the bottom to help keep the center of gravity low.
Ik it’s 2025 and we’ve come a long way from plastic. But it’s still hard to find something like a fully plastic free bottle (can’t be sure if it doesn’t sneak in a plastic mouthpiece). I took a research detour hehe so a lot of brands just put the label “plastic free” but, from the inside there is always some plastic thread or silicone inner. So, found this Mayu bottle: has an actual bamboo lid with stainless steel inside the bamboo and the glass is not made from soda lime, it’s actually durable. Sure, it’s glass and some parks might not allow it but it’s about as non-toxic you can get with going full stainless steel.
Mason jars
The lid from parm cheese containers fits on mason jars! Just passing this thrifty information along.
I have been researching the best BIFL insulated water bottle for a while now and have narrowed it down to 3 brands and 4 bottles. Those 3 brands are Zojirushi, Klean Kanteen and The Coolest Water bottle. My main goals that I am looking for are a large bottle (around 1L or 30 oz), has a lid that can be drunk straight from (not have to unscrew and then sip from the open container) and be suitable for hot (coffee to go) and cold (gym/hiking water).
From previous posts on here and reviews on temperature over time, Zojirushi seems like the best brand but their larger bottles come in either sports bottle that has a lid not suitable for hot drinks or a thermos that doesn't seem great for drinking straight out of. Does anyone have experience with either of these and can explain how if it can be used for both hot and cold being drunk straight from it? The problems are only with either lid so I would be completely fine with having to change the lid but I'm not sure if they are compatible.
If not, my next option would be the Klean Kanteen as it is available directly from my area (Australia) and their lid options are more abundant and also just look more thought out than popular brands like Yeti and HydroFlask, but in saying that I am open to any other opinions and options, especially when backed by people who have actually owned different brands.
P.S. I know that the last question is similar to previous posts but all those posts were from multiple years ago and some brands have significantly changed within that time and also have released new products and updated products, especially when it comes to larger bottles.
I've managed to collect quite a few brands over the years. If you're looking for a top-notch water bottle, both the Owala FreeSip and the Hydro Flask come highly recommended by pretty much everyone, each for their unique features and durability.
The Owala FreeSip stands out for its innovative drinking mechanism. It offers a built-in straw for easy sipping, ideal for staying hydrated on the go without having to tilt the bottle. This feature is particularly convenient during activities like driving or working out. Additionally, you can open it up for a full-flow drink, giving you two options in one design. The insulation quality of the FreeSip is excellent, ensuring your drinks stay chilled for hours. It’s also leak-proof and comes in various sizes and attractive color options, making it as stylish as it is functional.
In contrast, the Hydro Flask is renowned for its robust build and exceptional temperature retention. Made with pro-grade stainless steel, it’s designed to withstand rough handling and still last for years. Its insulation capabilities are outstanding, keeping beverages cold or hot for extended periods. The wide-mouth design of the Hydro Flask is another plus, making it easy to fill, drink from, and clean. It’s perfect for those who prefer a more traditional, no-fuss design but still want the assurance of a high-quality, long-lasting bottle.
Popular mechanics magazine did a test on water bottles not too long ago and most bottles that are vacuum insulated work the same way and offer insulation of hot/cold for many hours. It’s more or less personal preference of lids and shape/size that could be deciding factor. One thing I will mention is my yeti gets tossed in the dishwasher daily for the last four years and still looks great. Hydro flasks are not approved for dishwasher fwiw, I tried and the outside got stained and chalky. Hydro flask has great customer service when my screw top lids leaked they sent me three to replace my old ones.
Yep, I’ll third Hydroflask! Excellent customer service. I have the 40oz bottle, with the straw lid, and it’s still going sting after 8 years.
I switched from the straw lid after the orings consistently failed on me. I hated having to change them every year....the point of going reuseable was to limit my plastic use. I switched to a third party "click" lid and absolutely LOVE it. I've had my bottle for 6 years.
Second praise for Hydroflask customer service! I work in barns and outdoors and beat the piss out of waterbottles but my Hydroflask is going on 4 years and still works excellent except for multiple paint chips and dents by this point. I've also broken two of the lids, emailed them, and without any proof of purchase or proof of a covered damage they simply immediately mailed me a replacement lid.
As for keeping things hot/cold they're HIGHLY effective.
As a counterpoint, I was disappointed in the Klean Kanteen. It didn't maintain temp well and wasn't very durable.
Hydroflask, their insulation really works, if you want you can take a look at this list https://peturity.com/water-bottle/
Actually as of 2020, all Hydroflasks are dishwasher safe.
Zoj with this version. Zojirushi SM-SA36-BA Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Mug, 20-Ounce, Black by Tokyo Japanese Outlet Learn more: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HYOGUM2/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_81V0A8TCVTH9KG7FP30X
The newer with a different top don’t flip up right. I’ve had mine for years.
Warning! Do not put hot beverages in this with the assumption it will cool. It will not. It takes like 10 hours. Put it in like you want to drink it.
Middle pops out for cleaning. Lid clicks back so it doesn’t hit your nose. I’ve and water will still have ice 12 hours later. Tried other brands but I’m spoiled now.
Zoj mugs don’t go up to 30 ounces.
Edit they have 35 ounce vacuum bottle and a different thermos looking one.
Zojirushi Do have larger ones (the two I linked in the op) but the lids on them are for specific needs, either cold liquids only or canteen style with pourer and cup.
The larger volume pour into a cup. There are 2 versions of stainless steel and one has nonstick but it’s an even larger size. https://www.zojirushi.com/app/category/vacuum-insulated-mugs-bottles first row top 2 and second row first one.
If you go past 20 ounces it pours into a cup. There are no direct drink at 30 ounces with zoj.
Kind of depends on what your looking for. I personally have both a Hydroflash and a Ringo. So kind of depends on what you wanna spend.
I love my Ringo a little more just because I work out so I can put my phone on my water bottle magnetically and watch a show or something quite nice tbh.
I really like the yeti, it's works well both for my gym session that keeps my electrolytes water super cold for hours and also later when i am at home and siping slowly on a hot coffee or tea, it's just good at keeping temp
it' also sturdy as well which I hope means it will last me for years. one downside though is that it's a bit on the heavy side but i guess that's the material they use to keep the temp so can't have it all
edit: the yeti i got is the number 1 here: https://costnow.com/best-insulated-water-bottle/
Looking for the best water bottle on the market, i like those water bottle that can keep temp (cold or hot) and bonus points for being sturdy, size I guess i should not even mention as those bottles usually come in all sizes?
100% this wide mouth flex cap one. Keeps my water cold and the thing is built super durable.
It also has a little handle so you can carry it around, plus you can get it in any color you want.
I love the Yeti! they are the best water bottle on the market right now imo, they are so well made and will last for years
+1 , the yeti is a great water bottle, very sturdy and can keep temp very well
I like Tritan Bottles, they are BPA-free plastic that is impact-resistant, its light just plastic but it doesn't have any of the health concerns using a plastic bottle have
another vote for the hydro flask, Been using it for the last 2 years and a great insulated bottle
100% this wide mouth flex cap one. Keeps my water cold and the thing is built super durable.
It also has a little handle so you can carry it around, plus you can get it in any color you want.
I like VOSS
Preferably USA or EU made
Going to go with Life Factory for my kid’s school water bottle, looks like they’re manufactured in France
I bought a bkr teeny bottle and I’m super happy with it, although it appears that they’re made in China.

I thought glass was glass. There’s no plastic or bad metals in it. I got one off Amazon with a silicone cover in case it falls.
What's some good quality glassware to purchase for typical drinks like soda, water, milk, juice etc.? I don't want anything too cheap of quality but nothing extremely expensive either.
Anthropologie Icon Juice Glasses are the best.
I bought mine at Amazon.com for the Best Glassware solid options that strike a balance between quality and affordability
Luminarc Working Glasses. We've had these for going on 30 years. They're pretty beefy, not elegant.
I'm pretty sure these are the same ones I got from Costco some years ago.
If so then they're made of thick soda glass, so they're not indestructible per se but very tough (we've had one glass shatter on us but it fell from a decent height onto hard floor).
I really like these. The design is classic, they feel substantial in your hand, and are easy to clean. I think for glassware you can't really design it any better.
All you have to do is go to the thrift store and find some Anchor Hoching glasses from who knows when. I found three matching ones I like, and when I visit the thrift store, there are always extras of the exact same glass available if I wanted more.
*Anchor Hocking
Second this. I buy the ones made in France that are like bar glasses for 50 cents apiece.
thanks for the counsel, I did not consider that
Durability and nostalgia, all in one ruby-red package
Best glass water bottles
Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Glass Water Bottles:
Material Quality: Look for bottles made from borosilicate glass, which is more durable and resistant to thermal shock compared to regular glass.
Capacity: Choose a size that fits your hydration needs. Common capacities range from 16 oz to 32 oz. Consider how much water you typically drink throughout the day.
Lid Type: Consider the type of lid (screw-on, flip-top, or straw) based on your preference for ease of use and spill resistance. A silicone sleeve can also provide extra grip and protection.
Portability: If you plan to carry it around, look for a lightweight design and a size that fits in your bag or car cup holder.
Ease of Cleaning: Ensure the bottle is easy to clean, preferably dishwasher safe or with a wide mouth for easy access.
Design and Aesthetics: Choose a design that you find appealing, as this can encourage you to use it more often.
