Nalgene Bottles
Nalgene bottles are a popular choice among office-goers due to their lightweight, durable, and BPA-free design. They are known for being simple and functional, with an attached cap that prevents loss [1:2]
[1:3]. Many users appreciate the ability to personalize them with stickers, making them both practical and fun.
Hydro Flask
Hydro Flask water bottles are highly recommended for their insulation capabilities, keeping drinks cold or hot for extended periods. They come in various sizes, including 32oz and 64oz options, which are ideal for staying hydrated throughout the workday without frequent refills [5:1]
[5:3]. The option to add a straw lid is also available, although some users suggest alternative lids for better durability
[5:8].
Owala FreeSip
The Owala FreeSip is favored for its large capacity, leak-proof design, and ease of use. It features a unique sipping mechanism that allows for easy drinking, and its opaque design helps prevent unwanted attention from others [2:2]
[2:3]. This bottle is also dishwasher safe, making it easy to clean.
Yeti Bottles
Yeti bottles are praised for their ruggedness and versatility. They are practically indestructible and suitable for various beverages, from water to coffee [4:2]
[4:6]. Yeti products are known for their excellent insulation properties, keeping drinks at the desired temperature for long periods.
Ion8 and Sho Bottles
Ion8 bottles are noted for being spill-proof and dishwasher safe, making them convenient for daily use [2:1]
[2:4]. Sho bottles are another great option, especially for those looking for a bottle that doesn't leak. They offer teacher discounts, adding extra value for educators
[2:6]
[2:10].
When choosing a water bottle for the office, consider factors such as size, insulation, ease of cleaning, and personal preferences regarding style and functionality. Each of these options provides unique benefits that cater to different needs and lifestyles.
Anyone has a recommendation for water bottles for work? Like easy, nothing fancy, nothing with too many contaminants. What do you like to bring to work or anywhere to stay hydrated? What's fun for you?
Just a basic Nalgene. Light weight, durable, cheap, BPA-free, and the cap is attached to the bottle. Plus all my stickers stay stuck to it. Simple.
I agree with Nalgene bottle. Except I have to have two separate ones 😅 one for work and the real one, which is my actual one and it is covered with stickers that my work has no business knowing about 🤣
Picture!?
BrüMate Era. I’m accidentally prone and they’re the only waterbottle I found that are totally spill proof when locked AND spill slowly if it’s knocked over when unlocked.
Nalgene
Just a 32oz Hydroflask.
I have a Brita bottle. Its refillable and each filter lasts for two months. It means i never have to carry a full bottle around since I can fill it at the sink at work. I commute by bike too so shaving weight helps keep sweating at bay so that's also why I choose that.
In the market for a new water bottle. Any recommendations for a bottle that meets the following criteria?
100% Owala Freesip:
You can get it in 1L+ size.
Has never leaked on me and I'm not gentle with this bottle!
Easy to drink from (has a top handle and the freesip feature is really good.
It's opaque so no annoying questions about squash.
Never had a issue cleaning it - the bigger sizes are large enough to fit my hand in the bottle.
I actually really rate the Owala freesip. A bit of a trendy choice right now but you can get it in massive sizes and the lid is dishwasher safe. If yo udon't fancy cleaning the straw you could also use it without the straw.
I was going to recommend these! I like using the straw in classes because I don’t have to chug 😂
Ion8 bottles are really good.
I second ion8. I won’t use any others. A bit pricey for a water bottle but no where near Stanley or Owala and they Do not spill or leak plus can go in the dishwasher. I’ve just engraved my name on a metal one through the website for the new year
I like my sho bottles, their newest one is big and can be put in the dishwasher. Teacher discounts too which is a bonus
Seconded. I have loads of Sho bottles, including the mug for my hot drinks.
Yes! Sho are amazing. The only ones I’ve found that don’t leak
Another vote for Sho - amazing!
Owala freesip
Just got my first position out of college with a fund manager. Still have my old, beat up Hydroflask, any suggestions on a new water bottle to get? Are Lulu water bottles a thing? A Patagonia water bottle would be ideal (to match my vest 🤣)
Yeti, for the rugged adventures from your desk to the meeting room
Make sure it’s a target water brand, a non-target water brand like Dasani would doom your career. No one wants Dasani.
Some target brands:
Icelandic to show that you’ve got ice in your veins and you’re cool under pressure, Fiji shows that you’re into the exotic and know when to take a step back, and when you fill your Yeti up with the company kool aid it proves that you’re 100% committed 100% of the time.
People who drink Dasani, Aquafina, and/or Nestle are doomed and didn’t go to a target school. At a bare minimum you should drink smart water which is scientifically proven to activate your target genes. Buy non-target water only to give to your dogs or your interns.
What if I use a large stainless steel tumbler that I bought at Target? The tumbler is easier to fill with ice. I know it’s bad to be an outlier but I really like it.
If you use that tumbler then your output will tumble as well. Make sure to drop liquid nitrogens drops for maximum cooling effects on you target water.
It'll in turn, give you a nitro effect with your work output and you'll be an MD on the golf course in no time.
The kool aid part got me 🤣
My beat up hydroflask got upgraded to a 64 oz hydroflask.
Your bonus and your water choice are both discretionary. Choose wisely.
Tbh, I’d fuck with it. Imagine your MD with a bottle like that.
Right ?!
I use a water bottle from my university. I like it because it’s gotten me into a conversation 2-3 times with fellow alumni who noticed it (and I got it for free).
Ah, yes, gotta flex that top-dollar education. Let me guess, University of American Samoa?
Goooooo Land Crabs!
Hey all, this question caused an absolute uproar in the staff room. Sides were taken, alliances formed and friendships ended. So I thought I'd share them question on here.
What drink bottle/coffee carrier do you use for work and would you recommend it to new teachers/ES/admin and other roles ?
This. I was irrationally anti-Yeti for a long time due to their branding but I have had a rambler with their hot cap for a year now. I love it. Three pieces into the dishwasher. No springs, no leaks, no valves.
I have a yeti water bottle and a yeti rambler. They are practically indestructible and easy to clean
I was wondering what the hype was and thank you, I now know.
Off to buy a yeti!
Coffee - get a Fressko. Don’t consider anything else and thank me later. I put this baby boiling hot straight in my pocket or laptop bag. Used it daily for years never leaked a single drop and stays hot from 7am leaving home until lunch time.
Fressko is definitely best for making a hot drink at home and taking to work.
Second this. Also keeps iced coffees cold and ice doesn’t melt.
I'd throw Oasis in as well. Amazing quality and has never leaked. I take the train and bus every day and not a drop has exited the cup without my permission.
I lose stuff. I use refilled plastic bottles of water. At one point my ES counted that I had 6. I cannot be trusted with nice things.
You and me both. I’m pump bottles all the way. Powerade bottles if I’m stuck, but the lids aren’t as nice.
Yeti is the best lazy Christmas gift ever. Get them the medium rambler and fill it with Chocolate they like. Yetis are good for coffee, tea, water, cocktails and beer so everyone is covered.
Your staffroom has a dishwasher?!
The prep room does, so long as I don’t mind the tingle of chemicals on my tongue it’s fine. But no, I take it home each day haha.
hi! my boyfriend is in the market for a new water bottle. he works with roofing and it gets HOT. we're looking for durability, capacity, and insulation. having a handle or something is a bonus for lugging up and down equipment. he has a typical nalgene now, but it doesn't keep water cold at all and also doesn't hold much. sometimes he doesn't have the ability to refill between jobs. any recommendations?
edit: we opted for the plastic cooeman jug. it holds a gallon, has a spout and handle. it is durable and only ~$10 from common stores. the con is it only comes in blue and red, but it is perfect for the qualifications my boyfriend needed.
Walmart sells steel vacuum bottles that are durable, relatively cheap, and keep water cold all day. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Tal-64-Ounce-Double-Wall-Vacuum-Insulated-Stainless-Steel-Ranger-Pro-Teal-Water-Bottle/251284178
For value, I would definitely say Ozark Trail bottles from WalMart or Mira brand bottles from Amazon. In my experience, they perform similarly to the HydroFlasks but at a substantially lower price point.
The Ozark Trail didn’t have an attached cap. Dealbreaker for me.
Hydroflasks are super solid and can keep ice all day. You can also get a straw top on it which is life changing.
As someone who has rocked the straw lid for 3 years...don't do it. The orings don't last long at all on them. Sure...you can use your lifetime warranty and get a new lid but why do that every year?
I was looking around on Amazon and found a "chute" style lid that fits the hydro flask. It took my favorite bottle to my lifetime bottle with a simple lid change.
I personally use a 40oz bottle because it hits that sweet spot of being able to hold enough to quench and thirst even on hot days but also not too big. It won't fit in any cupholders though - I also recommend the carrying sling as well
Mind sharing a link to that other lid?
I second the hydroflask. I kind of laughed when I got one for Christmas. But I gave it a try a month later and I LOVE IT! I'm sad the days I forget it at home.
These are really popular with construction workers here in Arizona:

Definitely go with Hydroflask.
Agreed, but invest in a silicone boot to go over the bottom. I have a few that are still working great, but the bottoms are wrecked with dents from drops.
Is there any point to get a boot if you already dropped it a bunch? I have a TON of dents all over mine but I've done the hot water test and it's still holding insulation
we ended up being at a store that had a coleman sale, and we bought a gallon water jug. not necessarily a "bottle" but the capacity value was there.
I’m looking for a water bottle that
Thanks !
I personally love the Contigo water bottles. They're made of plastic but they are pretty well made.
You could also look at some of the metal water bottles if you're not a fan of plastic.
Contigo 20oz stainless. Lockable cap, never a spill in 3 years.
You know, I honestly am not a fan of opaque bottles. I'm always wary of how clean they are. Plus, I like knowing how much water they have and if I've added the right amount of Crystal Light or whatever.
I have a couple of metal bottles that I like but generally, much prefer transparent ones.
I really like my Brita filtered water bottle , I got the plastic because I like a light bottle but it comes in stainless steel. Because it has a filter all my water tastes the same which is great for traveling in airports and hotels.
HydroFlask
My hydroflask leaks like a motherfucker. And I’ve talked to people with the same problem. I ended up with a Takeya per this review and I’m much happier with it.
I haven't had that problem but it's probably covered by their warranty: https://www.hydroflask.com/warranty/
I've been using a Nomader for a bit -- it roughly fits your spec.
>not sure what you meant by this -- aren't all water bottles watertight?
If there's a bad seal or the cap is designed poorly, water bottles can leak when it's turned upside down for long periods of time or it hits something just the right way and pops the cap open. I had a water bottle in my bag in an overhead bin and the first time I used it, I opened the bin to find a puddle and my bag soaked. Luckily it was a tiny regional flight so my bag was the only one in the bin. I was so pissed off because the basic function of a water bottle is that it shouldn't spill easily, but I learned differently that day...
Yes, this is exactly what I’m trying to avoid
I own a chillys Been using it for a while now, the quality is superb and has a ton of cool alternatives. There is another cool option memo bottle more in line with your reqs but more plain too, never tried it doe. up to you.
I'm doing research for a college project/concept and would love to gather more info about the different aspects of drinking water on the go, at work and at home. I'd love to hear from you!
That's not a survey.
Asking (theoretically, some of us,) Industrial Designers to do surveys for product design is dumb, we're not representative of a target market.
I'm certainly not the negative pretentious got-into-the-field-to-smash-Capitalism type but dear God, Who. The. Fuck. Cares about another water bottle? I'm sorry if this was specifically assigned to you, if so your school sucks.
Op should visit r/hydrohomies
Tbh im kind of for it. Schools should assign some random mundane products, its what 90% of us will work on in the real world anyway.
Better than the 100th ‘solving the water crisis in Africa’
I suppose lol.
Anyone who tries an oowala with the straw/chug combo never goes back.
Designer agrees. The tip is sublime.
Used Gatorade bottle
As a former designer for Contigo & someone who has worked in the water industry for 20 years, this thread is fun to read through 😅
I do highly recommend lurking in the water bottle aisle at Target or any big box store, and watch people try to shop for water bottles.
Then, if you politely ask them if they’d be willing to answer a few questions for your college water bottle design project, most people are happy to answer a few questions. With some well crafted exploratory questions you can learn a lot about their current water bottle situation, the issues they’re experiencing and/or motivations to shop for a new water bottle, and what they think they’re looking for in a new water bottle.
(Keyword: think - often what people ‘think’ they want/need is not the same as what would actually solve for their wants/needs. Most people can’t conceptualize easily the ’what could be’ of something that doesn’t exist yet, which is why synthesizing your research investigation and findings is incredibly important to identify both the root issues, and potential novel solutions (which again, folks don’t easily invent ideas to solve something readily, which is why we ideate and test and reiterate and rebuild and test again, and again, and again, during the design process, ideally! Sometimes there is an epiphany baked in there too, but, can’t rely on ah-ha! moments.)
Then, once you’ve gathered some more leads, primordial ideas, and learned about all things water bottles and hydration-on-the-go, then really start to tease out the ‘who’ and ’why’, what is the problem you’re solving with “yet another water bottle”? Why should this exist and who is it for? And then go do another round of research talking to those folks and honing in on your purpose.
Industry pro tip too, if you do the guerrilla research in-aisle method — Target/Walmart & most big box retailers have more than one section that merchandises water bottles. There is one in the home goods area with other cups, travel mugs, etc. and another section over by fitness/workout/yoga type products (and they’re completely different buyers/target audiences fyi) and also a 3rd spot by the water filtration section which has some filtered water bottles and sometimes other beverage appliances (e.g. sodastream), and also usually there is a 4th section over by sporting goods/camping. Sometimes also they’re in stack outs randomly around the store, since they can be an impulse buy.
I will say as someone in the industry, there is a big ongoing and ever growing issue with plastics/microplastics right now - it doesn’t matter if a bottle is BPA-free or made with Tritan etc, for the last 10-15 years a lot of people are actively cutting out plastics, especially plastics that touch food and water.
The issue is there aren’t a lot of good convenient options other than plastics unfortunately (glass, ceramic, double wall vacuum stainless bottles are HEAVY, cumbersome, and have other issues like difficult to make a robust waterproof seal, and/or easily damaged, among other issues.) and then there is the subtext of this issue which is generally water quality and health (e.g. filtration, purification/UV, re-mineralization additives for alkaline water, magnesium and lithia water, carbonation, electrolysis / hydrogen water, etc. - it’s a whole rabbit hole)
So if I were working on a water bottle project today, I’d be looking into these kinds of areas personally. But not tech for tech’s sake, or just material innovation for an incremental improvement - think about, for example, what do people really need to help them stay hydrated and healthy no matter where they are “on the go”. Or, “How might we…” — you get the picture. Backing into ‘what’s the point of a water bottle anyway?’ I’d argue it isn’t about the water bottle at all.
Thanks for all the detail. What’s your take on how much water containment vessels go for these days? Gotta have fat margins for Hydro and Yeti and not a great deal of innovation other than CMF.
I was gifted a Hydroflask years back and I still use it. It's a standard size, wide mouth, with a twist lid. Keeps my water cold and doesn't leak after years of abuse and reuse; I hit it with a forklift and sent it across concrete flooring and, besides the dent, has no issues to show for that.

I'm looking for recommendations on water and ice dispensers for our office, as we're in need of a new one.
A little background - our company operates primarily remotely, but we have a small team of five that comes into the office about twice a week. I’m in the office daily, and we occasionally host meetings with outside guests. We previously rented a coffee machine and a water/ice dispenser through a local provider, but due to cost-cutting measures, we discontinued those rentals. While we've replaced the coffee machine with a Keurig, I’m now searching for a suitable water and ice dispenser.
I've been researching online, but reviews are quite mixed. Ideally, we’re looking for a countertop model that connects directly to the water line (no bottles). It doesn’t necessarily need both hot and cold options, as we already have a water kettle.
Thank you!
I don't know what kind of budget you are working with, but we have a countertop follet. It hooks up to the line, filters, and makes the good soft nugget ice which is a huge plus in my book. So not cheap though.
Looking for a good water bottle to bring to from/work to drink more water.
I have rheumatoid arthritis. Even though I love my 40oz wide mouth, the travel tumbler is way easier for me to hold and carry. I have a Stanley and the HF Tumbler. I like both equally. Stanley is a smidge lighter if that matters imo.
I feel like the Stanley pro tour holder the coldness better than the hydro flask cause i just both a pro tour and was surprised that after the ice had melted my water was still cold
Stanley protour would be my pick too. It’s leak proof, fits in cup holders, holds ice better than the Hydroflasks, you can order the standard Stanley lid as an accessory from Stanley in case you want a cup more like #4.
Travel if you have your hands free, 40oz wide mouth if you need to clip it onto something/ put it in a bag. Only get the 32 funky shaped one if you don’t wanna buy an insert for your car ( I have for my 40oz wide mouths)

Looking for the best water bottle on the market, i like those water bottle that can keep temp (cold or hot) and bonus points for being sturdy, size I guess i should not even mention as those bottles usually come in all sizes?
100% this wide mouth flex cap one. Keeps my water cold and the thing is built super durable.
It also has a little handle so you can carry it around, plus you can get it in any color you want.

another vote for the hydro flask, Been using it for the last 2 years and a great insulated bottle
I love the Yeti! they are the best water bottle on the market right now imo, they are so well made and will last for years
+1 , the yeti is a great water bottle, very sturdy and can keep temp very well
I like Tritan Bottles, they are BPA-free plastic that is impact-resistant, its light just plastic but it doesn't have any of the health concerns using a plastic bottle have
