TL;DR
WetBrush Paddle Brush
The WetBrush Paddle Brush is highly recommended for those with thick and wavy hair. Its bristles are spaced out, making it excellent for detangling without causing frizz. This brush is particularly useful for managing volume and maintaining the natural shape of your hair [2:1]. It's important to avoid oval brushes as they tend not to work well with this hair type.
Denman Brush
For individuals with curly hair, the Denman Brush is a popular choice. It is advised to avoid brushing curly or wavy hair when it is fully dry, as this can lead to frizz [4:1]. Instead, detangle before washing and use conditioner to help maintain curls. The Curly Girl Method is also recommended for those with textured hair, providing techniques to care for and enhance curls
[4:2].
Vent Brush
A vent brush can be helpful for styling wavy hair, allowing airflow through the brush to reduce drying time and frizz. However, if you have curly hair, it's best to avoid using brushes altogether and opt for finger combing or wide-tooth combs instead [4:5]
[4:6].
Thermal Brushes and Styling Tools
Thermal brushes like the Hot Tools Pro Blowout Brush are praised for their ability to style hair quickly and effectively. They can be used on wet hair to achieve a sleek blow-dry look without the need for a separate hairdryer [1:1]
[1:2]. However, some users have found that certain models, like Bondi Boost, may not work well on thicker hair types
[1:3]. Additionally, blowout brushes can cause breakage due to the combination of heat and tension
[3:2], so consider using low-tension styles like braids or buns for a healthier alternative.
Considerations Beyond Brushes
While choosing the right brush is important, incorporating leave-in conditioners and proper styling techniques can further reduce frizz. Spraying a mixture of leave-in conditioner and water can help maintain waves and reduce fluffiness [2:2]. For those seeking more permanent solutions, keratin treatments might be worth considering for low-maintenance, frizz-free hair
[1:5].
I’m based in Australia and looking at getting a thermal brush to make my daily hair routine quicker and smoother. I don’t always want to use a straightener or curling iron, just something to tame frizz and add a polished look.
Has anyone here used one regularly? Is it actually effective on slightly wavy/frizzy hair? And any recommendations for models available in Aus ?
Would love to hear your experience-worth it or not?
I love my hot tools pro! Gives me a blow out in no time and you can use on wet hair. I’m not sure if it’s a thermal brush though (not sure what you mean by that!).
I also have the Hot Tools styler and it was recommended by my hairdresser as the best on the market (fwiw he is head stylist of a fancy salon). I’ve had it for 2yrs and it’s amazing on my frizzy fluffy hair, I can go from damp to sleek blow dry (with body) in under 10 minutes. So good. Especially great for those who struggle using a round brush and hairdryer at the same time lol.
ETA I got the bundle pack with all the different brush attachments and storage box https://www.hottools.com.au/collections/volumiser-one-step-blowouts/products/travel-bundle
Yes I’m one of those people who cannot use a hairdryer and brush simultaneously and I also gave myself 3rd degree burns using a hair straightener so this thing is the only thing I can use and not be in mortal danger of maiming myself 😅🥴
A thermal is Basically the same thing but for dry hair I think??
Thank you! I’ll definitely check it out.
I have wavy, frizzy and coarse hair. I found that the Bondi boost slightly straightened my hair…but because my hair is so thick it was still fluffy and poofy everywhere. Like I just air dried it. It might be great if you have specific types of hair but on my hair combo, it failed drastically. I recommend if you are getting one, to get one in store for easy returns if it doesn’t work. You have to pay for shipping back to Bondi boost and the brush is heavy and not worth paying the shipping price back.
I have seen so much about bondi boost, but there are both good and bad reviews. Although I have a Dyson, I kinda regret spending on it because my hair does not get styled with it. It falls flat after a point.
I got one from Aldi a few weeks ago, it's bloody brilliant. It's a rotating styling heat brush with interchangeable brushes. Has a three year warranty. $24.99. Grab one if there are any left
Not a thermal brush rec, but I feel like people I know who are drawn to them have all since gotten keratin treatments for the same reason- low maintenance/frizz free hair. Might be worth considering?
It's actually really good! I dried and styled my hair with it this morning, I have wavy/frizzy hair, and it's still nice and smooth 8 hours later
GHD glide, turns my hair from Hermione in the first movie to Hermione in the last movie
I have really thick wavy hair and every hairbrush I’ve used just makes my hair a big fluffy mess. I don’t have the time or money to use product in my hair every day and so my solution is to brush it and hope it’s good or put it up. What are some good (preferably affordable) hairbrushes that won’t make my hair all frizzy and will instead keep its shape? Or is my hair just destined to lose its waves and gain so much volume every time I brush it?
I don’t think it’s an issue with the hairbrush. It sounds to me like you have wavy/curly hair. Try only brushing it when it’s wet
so what do I do when my hair’s disheveled in the morning?
Make a mixture of leave in conditioner and water. Spray it in your hair in the morning. You can also use some gel on your washday. I agree with this comment that it has nothing to do with the hairbrush. You need a simple wavy routine. The start could just be a leave in conditioner
I also have thick and wavy hair! If i'm being honest, it's nearly impossible to make it look (fairly) nice without some hair products and heat styling, if that's your thing.
For my thick and wavy hair, the paddle brush by WetBrush has worked wonders! The bristles have ample space between them, which makes it great for detangling thick hair. Just one tip: avoid oval brushes at all costs!! The shape of them does NOT work as a hair brush.
I hope this helps! :)
how long does it take you for your routine and what would you recommend? I really just hate how my hair looks right now
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on the best styling tools for my hair type and current situation.
I have medium-to-long wavy hair that I only wash every 5 days or so. I rarely use heat, I usually let my hair air-dry and use heatless curling methods overnight on wash days. Despite avoiding heat and getting trims every 3 months, the ends of my hair are still rough, damaged, and sometimes itchy or irritating on my skin.
Recently, I tried a heat blow-dry brush for the first time in years, and while it made my hair feel softer and look healthier, I know it was just masking the damage. I’m cautious about introducing heat tools regularly and don’t want to make things worse.
On top of that, I’ve been dealing with female pattern hair loss for about 5 years, worsened by stress. I’ve also noticed that the tension from heatless curl methods (overnight wrapping) might be contributing to more breakage and shedding.
So, given all this — fragile ends, wavy texture, and hair loss concerns — I’m looking for a styling tool that: • Minimizes or prevents damage • Helps my hair feel and look healthier • Avoids excessive heat or tension
I’ve seen a lot of social media buzz about the BondiBoost Blowout Brush, but I’m skeptical about whether it’s actually gentle or just another gimmick.
Does anyone have experience with this tool or similar ones? Any tips, alternatives, or even product recs (leave-ins, heat protectants, etc.) that have helped you in a similar situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance!
Blowout brushes cause a lot of breakage because they combine heat and tension. The most low tension and protective styles are braids, buns, and overnight braids and buns, depending on whether you want a tight wave or a very loose one. Maybe try sleeping in two buns instead of one for a "blowout" look?
You may have more luck if you use a heat protectant and blow dry with a diffuser with low heat - I've read that iconic study that gets into what's better for hair, blow drying versus air drying, and there are benefits to drying it faster from a distance of 15 cm so it's wet for less time and less prone to damage, plus it can be better for your scalp, I just learned. I prefer evidence based takes on hair care, so I looked at some recent research!
Those brushes will cause damage, yup. Have you tried sock bun curls?
I have thick wavy hair that usually just poofs up when I brush it and never wants to stay in one place. My poofed up hair usually looks 10x worse than if I didn’t brush it so I usually go without brushing it. Any recommendations?
Sounds like you have curly hair, brushing dry curly/wavy hair is a no-go because it will always frizz up. Try the following to find out if your hair is curly:
Detangle hair before washing. Wash hair as normal. Add conditioner. Squeeze out excess moisture (avoid towel drying). Let air dry or dry with a diffuser on a low heat.
If you tried that and have some waves or curls then you might look into the curly girl method (CGM), there's tons of videos on youtube about how to care for textured hair. Manes by Mel is pretty highly regarded, I recommend some of her videos :)
I tried it for the past 3 days and it did my hair wonders! I’ll definitely keep on doing this! Thank you so much!
Oh good, I'm so glad I could help! I always wish someone told me this when I was younger, I was looking like Cousin It all the way through school lol
This op! This one!
Maybe just use a wide tooth comb? If your hair is poofy, it may actually be curly. Maybe try some methods for caring for curly hair to see if that helps. For example, I think many curly haired people only comb (wide tooth) their hair when it’s wet with conditioner in the shower, or maybe brush it before showering but not after.
I only brush my hair once in the morning and once at night. I think a vent brush is suppose to help with waves. If you have curly hair, you should probably avoid using a brush.
My hair is thin but wavy and what I do is only “brush” my hair when it’s wet and full of conditioner. I finger comb it then and that’s it, it stays detangled for the most part and if it doesn’t then I might use a wide tooth comb if I need it to look less messy
Try a Denman brush, and try to avoid brushing your hair when it's fully dry.
Don’t put a round brush anywhere near curly hair!
DO NOT use a brush on curly hair for the love of god
Why not?
You end up just pulling your hair out as the comb/brush hits tangles & knots. I mostly just finger comb mine so I can separate the threads more easily.
i can’t imagine never brushing my curly hair that’s insane
A Round Brush for long wavy hair ... uhhhh... I remember getting my moms round brush stuck in my hair when I was a kid. I think she had to cut some out 🥲
Did you do that when your hair was dry? I use a round brush on my daughters wavy hair with no issue, just need to make sure the hair is appropriately wet. Then again I also detangle first mostly with an oval brush.
But which one for bald people?
Some Windex. Make it extra shiny.
the plunger
No wide tooth comb for nobody smh This guide is trash.
Exactly my though!
I have very dry hair that breaks off whenever I brush it. I’ve seen Wet Brush in stores, but I’ve heard conflicting reviews. Have you guys used these before? Is there something else I should try?
You need a wet brush , ive never heard of or had a experience with mine. They are absolutely amazing for ur hair,& have a wide variety of uses!
Hands down Tangle Teezer Wet Detangler, I use solely this for years already. https://www.amazon.de/Tangle-Teezer-Detangler-praktischer-Tragegriff/dp/B07J36RGDK/ref=asc_df_B07J36RGDK/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=354578424687&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7042127892339918031&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9116272&hvtargid=pla-738319186007&psc=1&th=1&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=71648180556&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=354578424687&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7042127892339918031&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9116272&hvtargid=pla-73831918600
But if your hair is really dry, you might want to try deep conditioner to help that.
I use a wide tooth wooden comb. My hair is very fine and tangles easily, brushes break my hair.
I think I'm finding the same, which stinks because I really love my BBB. No matter how much I think I've detangled, now that I'm paying attention, I can hear my hair snapping as I brush it.
Edit: word
I don’t find the comb more work than a brush if that makes you feel any better! Maybe that’s because it’s what I’m used to though.
Tangle teezer is better than wet brush because it lacks the little balls at the end of the bristles so it lets the knots go more easily
I have a Wet Brush and I love it. However, if you're experiencing a lot of breakage and dryness, changing your brush alone will not prevent it. Different products and a trim might be necessary.
Hi all,
Um... welp. These posts are really getting fewer and farther between each time, huh. I'm not even sure if I used that expression right, but it sounded good. Alright, let's recap all the previous ones we've done:
This week, at the great suggestion of u/princess-sanguine, combs and brushes! Same as all the previous times, I would like you to fill out this little list of information about your suggestion:
>Brand:
>
>Name:
>
>Price:
>
>Other information:
>
>Your experience/opinion:
If you are from a country that is not the USA and the product is only available where you live, please mention which country and recommend it anyway! We are sorely lacking non-American resources.
And then this is optional, because I don't even know what I'm going to do with this information in regards to the products, but I figure I might as well ask and see if I see any kind of trend.
>Your porosity (low to high):
>
>Your strand thickness (fine to coarse):
>
>Your density (thin to dense):
As always, if you have any sort of feedback, please let me know! Modmail is always open. Thank you so much for all your help and suggestions and for being an amazing community ❤️
Brand: Wet Brush Name: no idea, it’s a Halloween edition with a sugar skull on it if that helps? Lol Price: $12 Other information: I only use it in the shower when conditioning, works great for that! My experience/opinion: works great in the shower when strangling with conditioner while my hair is wet. Haven’t tried it outside of that. The bristles are a little flimsy so they don’t pull on my hair too much.
High to medium porosity, fine and thin hair
I love my Wet Brush. It's so much easier to use (and nicer to my hair) than the rigid wide tooth comb I was using before.
Im confused about wet brushes. Everything I read says that to avoid damage and breakage you should never brush your hair wet, but lots of wavy/curly folks do this. Can someone explain?
I only ever brush my hair in the shower, when I have conditioner in it! This helps reduce breakage and frizz while also hydrating my hair and ensuring even product distribution. Brushing wet hair WITHOUT product may be a bad idea, but to each their own. I just find it helps reduce breakage and frizz for me!
EDIT to add I also detangle my hair by wetting it and combing through leave in conditioner with a wide tooth comb. Not a lot, just enough to give some slip without being greasy.
I love the wet brush for in the shower and making sure products are evenly applied. I bought the “pro” version which I believe is exactly the same except it has a silicone grip that I really like. It was about $15-20 AUD
The new biodegradable wet brush is amazingggg it's so gentle and great for finer hair that's prone to breakage. I also love the colors :)
Second the wet brush
Someone already said this one, of course, but I'm gonna endorse it too for emphasis
Brand: denman
Name: original styler 7 row
Price: $20 usd
Other information: idk it's very popular and there are other varieties but I've only used the original
Your experience/opinion: I was skeptical that this brush would do anything for me because in beauty school I knew it as a go to for natural blow outs (aka it smoothed and straightened even the tightest coils) and I didn't think it was for wavies especially me with my chin length fine hair. I decided to try it out anyway because it's not too expensive and seemed good for even product distribution if nothing else. But besides that, it actually does help my waves clump more evenly and end up looking nicer overall. It takes practice to figure out how best to use it on your hair but it solved the problem I had with stray hairs and sections being out of place and drying into a mess when I was simply finger combing and micro plopping. I was surprised by how much definition I got out of it. Now I don't know what I'd do without it, I encourage any skeptical wavies to give it a chance because it might be a game changer for you like it was for me.
Your porosity (low to high): high
Your strand thickness (fine to coarse): fine
Your density (thin to dense): medium/thin (I still can't figure out what the standard is lol)
Thanks for sharing this! Sounds like we have similar hair (except for length) - how do you use it?
I’ve seen girls with coarse resilient curls tension a wet lock and distribute gel with this brush, which I’ve never tried, but which looks like it might straighten my waves out... but I’m glad to hear there’s a technique out there for those of us with this kind of hair!
I do the same thing and give the section a little scrunch after! Sorta like when you s2c. I also sorta twirl the brush at the end sometimes. I thought the same thing but as long as my hair is wet it curls right back up.
Brand: Denman
Name: D3 original styler 7 row
Price: 19.95 USD
Other information: they are available outside the US as well.
My experience: this brush is amazing. It was an absolute game changer. It helps evenly distribute product throughout your hair and removes excess product while doing so. It's an it's a part of my daily routine. It's all curl type friendly and there are plenty of YouTube videos out there about it.
brand: curl keeper
name: flexy brush (and its identical kid-sized companion, the kinder brush)
price: $21 ($14.99 for the kinder)
other info: Canadian company, also sells to US, frizzoff.com
experience: this is The. Best. Brush, hands down. Very flexible bristles and brush head without being flimsy; easy to keep clean with no places for water or product to collect and get gross, which means zero worries about mildew if you keep it in your shower. Honestly, this brush is a HG item for me.
about me: high porosity, fine, dense hair
Getting ready to take these two month braids out, I currently use a regular wide tooth comb but I can’t help but thing there’s something better out there! What’s a good detangling brush for very thick and coarse 4c hair a little past shoulder length if that helps.
I like Tangle Teezer type brushes, but I also really like the horse-wrangler, Felicia Leatherwood type brushes, as well. If I’m detangling dry hair with oil and/or conditioner before a wash, I even like using regular paddle brushes ( yes, with the balls). You just have to turn paddle brushes vertically when detangling to not get the curls/coils/kinks caught on the balled tips.
My favorite brush for detangling these days is the Kazmaleje Paddle Comb. I like it because it works really well without tearing out or breaking my hair and it's very deep so I'm able to do larger sections than I could with other brushes. I linked it from target because they sell it in stores, but you can also find it at a lot of other online stores. https://www.target.com/p/kazmaleje-kurlsplus-paddle-hair-comb-blue/-/A-83802172
I'm a product junkie, so other brushes that I've tried and like are the Felicia Leatherwood brush and the Large Ultimate Tangle Teezer. They also work well for detangling and are good at removing all the shed hair.
FELECIA LEATHERWOOD BRUSH!!!! Changed my life. Only brush of mine my man steals. Only brush my toddlers don’t scream. Best detangling brush ever. Don’t get a knock off, hers is perfect. I have two.
I use tsngle teezer. The bristles flex and arent ball tipped so they dont force tangles out.
Another tip is to put distilled water im your spray bottles. Distilled water is filtered 6 times over and softened, so its easier to detangle with than tap water. Its $2 a gallon. Mine lasts 3 weeks.
I’ve never thought about using distilled water in my spray bottle. I’ll have to give it a try and see if I notice a difference. I have heard someone recommend a water filtration system for the home. I was told that helps your skin as well.
water softener is $3k definitely not installing it in a home I dont own thats for sure
I use the tangle teezer. The one for 3c-4c hair. I love it.
https://www.ulta.com/p/naturally-curly-detangling-brush-3c-4c-hair-pimprod2023873
Literally just got the tangle teezer brush yesterday and it’s my favorite by far. So so so easy to untangle. My hair gets sooooooo tangled.
I also recommend the tangle teezer
I also have fine hair that tangles easily. I love my tangle teezer and wet brush, honestly couldn’t imagine going back to any other brushes for detangling at this point.
Any high-quality boar bristle brush! It also helps make fine hair look less greasy
I have the Kent small bristle brush which has bristles & nylon mixed. It's a pain to clean as it gets fluff in the bristles way too easily. Or do you mean one without the nylon bristles? We have a round only bristle one in the house but I found I just get it stuck in my hair XD
Natural bristles are also a pain to clean, but they're so worth it! Nylon bristles basically have no benefit to your hair, whilst boar bristles will add some natural shine, prevent frizz and gently detangle. Roundbrushes are actually not meant for hair brushing 😂
I have long straight fine hair that gets tangled pretty easy and use Wet Brush for years now. makes the hair soft and doesn't pull out as much hair as other brushes I had before.
My wet brush snapped off at the handle. After maybe 6 months of use.
My Wet Brush fell from...uh...the height of my sink and snapped. I still use it lol, but just duct-taped the rough part so it doesn't hurt. It was my fault because I've dropped it before and nothing happened.
Omg! Mine did this also! I had it a few years but I have a chin length bob! I was shocked haha
That sucks, I'm sorry yours only lasted for 6 months. Even my first one (like 6 years old) it's still good and I still have it, I only bought more because it was a gold 'special edition' one that I really liked and a foldable one to carry in my purse.
My mom's first one lasted for like two years though, lost like half the bristles in a matter of a month or two.
I use a wide toothed wooden comb
