TL;DR
LG InstaView Refrigerators
LG's InstaView refrigerators are known for their innovative door-in-door feature that allows you to see inside without opening the door. However, there are significant concerns about their reliability, particularly with compressors [1:2]
[1:4]. Despite these issues, LG models frequently appear in top consumer ratings
[1:5], suggesting they are still a popular choice among consumers.
Brand Reliability
When considering a refrigerator brand, it's important to weigh the reliability of the brand against its features. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with LG and Samsung due to frequent repairs and poor customer service [1:7]
[4:6]. Instead, some users recommend sticking with traditional appliance companies like Whirlpool and Frigidaire, which tend to offer fewer frills but greater reliability
[2:2]
[4:3].
High-End Options
For those with a higher budget, Sub-Zero is often recommended as a top-tier brand. These refrigerators are praised for their ability to keep food fresh for longer periods, although they come with a hefty price tag [5:1]
[5:3]. If budget is not a concern, investing in a Sub-Zero could be worthwhile for long-term satisfaction.
Consumer Reports and Research
Several commenters suggest consulting Consumer Reports for reliable reviews and recommendations on refrigerators [4:10]. This can provide a comprehensive view of various models and help you make an informed decision based on both user experiences and expert evaluations.
Personal Preferences and Features
While many advise against too many additional features due to potential breakdowns, some users appreciate the convenience of features like ice and water dispensers [4:8]. Ultimately, the best refrigerator will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget constraints.
This past weekend, my wife and I were at Lowes having a laid-back/goof-off date night where we were admiring all the cool items we couldn't afford. We wandered into the appliances department and stumbled upon the door-in-door refrigerators.
Neither one of us had ever seen one before, and we were blown away by the ingenuity. Some had a clear panel and were labeled as InstaView. I honestly had never seen a fridge like that before in anybody's home.
So, I headed over to YouTube to do some research. I ended up finding videos from one year up to seven years ago! I was shocked that the technology had been around for that long, yet I'd never seen one. I noticed there was nothing under a year; so I began questioning whether the concept was already on its way out, becoming obsolete; or worse, the idea had bombed and no one was buying them.
I thought I'd ask on Reddit to gather additional input. Is this style of refrigerator worth investing in? We were greatly intrigued by the convenience of the additional quick-access door, and the french door style would be a nice upgrade from our existing freezer on top setup.
If you think something else is better, let me know!
I absolutely LOVE the door within a door feature! I'm currently looking for another one. It, however, will not be an LG product! Do your research. When we bought our refrigerator 2.5 years ago, paying around $2500 LG seemed to be the way to go. Notice that I said 2.5 years ago! Yes, it's already done! Apparently, they use bad compressors. And, I have talked to appliance repair companies that suggested I look at LG lawsuits on such. It sounds like a huge hassle to even get repaired, and they haven't changed the compressors that they use so they go bad again in just as short of time. No thank you. But I will be getting another door in door. To us it is worth it. We keep our milk/ cream and often used itms in this portion of the refrigerator. We love the French Doors, Freezer on the bottom, door in door styles.
Feel free to update once you find one from a better brand. My wife and I ended up going with French doors because our space was not a standard size; but I'd still love to get a door in door one day.
Us too! We love the door in door feature but our compressor just went out two days ago...so disappointing! No more LGs for us! :(
Interestingly enough, I went to Consumer Reports, clicked on refrigerators, of the top 8 models in their ratings, LG had 5 and GE had 3.
It's the kind of feature, where even if it breaks, you can still have use your fridge.
moved into a new house with a fridge that had it, and it was a fun feature until my MMA-fighter nephew slammed the door and broke the catch.
would have considered it in buying a new fridge except for the fact that we ruled out all LGs and Samsungs due to reliability and repair concerns.
>LGs and Samsungs due to reliability and repair concerns.
I wasn't aware those brands had known issues. Thank you for sharing.
Oh, thanks for the Samsung heads up. We've already experienced the LG garbage.
I had one for a few years in Korea 10+ years ago. It was handy for drinks and snacks, but not handy enough that we ever wanted to buy one when we returned to the states.
It's an eye catcher and more on the gimicky side than practical. Not that that is A bad thing but it's not a life changer. Up to you and what you want to budget for
Replaced a Samsung that was nothing but problems with a Frigidaire after doing extensive research. The thing that made the most sense was: the more options and gadgets, the more things that can go wrong and buy an appliance from an appliance company not an electronic company trying to build appliances
I've had great success with Whirlpool.
Really depends on budget but I’m a big fan of Sub Zero and liebherr.
If you’re looking for something more budget friendly LGs dual French doors or Jenn air
We are in the market for a new refrigerator and are looking for a French door. I cannot stand our side by side. I have done some research and have learned to generally stay away from Samsung, LG, and Kenmore.
Bosch is what I would prefer but I don’t want to spend that kind of money for the house that we are in, so I am looking for something closer to the 2k range.
I was at Lowes today and came across this Hisense fridge that I really liked. Most of the the reviews were exchanges for a fridge at a discounted price, so I have a hard time trusting them. Also, the price is so much lower than others. Too good to be true? Anybody have this fridge and like it? Hate it? Pros/cons? Would recommend or would not?
Also open to suggestions for any fridge you particularly love (but tell me why you love it!)
DO NOT BUY HISENSE REFRIGERATOR!!! spent over £800 on mine and its complete garbage. The refrigerant pipes have rusted and rotted through, it’s leaked all its gas out and has now stopped working. It’s 2 years and 5 months old. Hisense ignore all communications, which reading other posts seems to be their whole business plan. What sort of cheap crap metal is used in the manufacture of this product?? It’s dangerous and absolutely terrible quality AVOID HISENSE!!
I hope it's good. I am having one delivered today.
Their products fail..tvs are the Worst
.
I bought the 17 cubic ft bottom freezer and would like to know where the ice maker switch is.
We are buying a house and need to buy a refrigerator. Any suggestions on brands that will pay the longest? I’m currently thinking whirlpool or Frigidaire. What are your guys suggestions?
I can tell you consumer reports has LG models in like 13 of the top 15 refrigerators in the size/category I was shopping for last year.
We did find an LG that was decently priced! I just wasn’t sure how reliable they were. Our last refrigerator came with our old house, so I’m pretty green when it comes to buying a refrigerator
I bought an LG from Costco 7 years ago. Within 2 months, the ice maker needed servicing under warranty but I haven’t had a single issue with it since. Would buy again if priced right.
I really like consumer reports, if you might be replacing more appliances in the near future I would definitely recommend picking up a subscription. We've replaced all our kitchen appliances, our washing machine, and helped family shop for good used cars, it's been well worth the subscription.
Look for a unit with as few “frills” as possible. The more frills, the greater the chance that one of them will break.
Don’t get water or ice in the door. That just turns into a place for heat to leak into the freezer and more parts to break.
I don’t know the best ever but don’t buy a Samsung. Every video and review I have read or seen say Samsung is an inferior product. It’s hard to find a decent new fridge these days, I hope you find the perfect one for you.
Every person I know who has had Samsung appliances says the same thing! I def won’t even consider Samsung.
My appliance repair guy concurs regarding Samsung’s poor quality
I love my samsung
I know everyone is saying no ice/water dispenser, but damn I love that feature. They will break, but some won't break for a damn long time, so if you get a good one, imo it's worth it.
Agree. My parents’ is like 20 years old at this point, still works. I also rented a place where the fridge was about 5 years old and it was already broken when we moved in.
Same. I will never buy a Samsung product again.
I own samsung and love it. Best one I've ever owned. https://images.app.goo.gl/gSAzZuxBU6H3fqmM7
Subzero. But it will cost an arm and leg.
not for 3-4k, but yes - theyre the best.
My dad has worked for sub zero nearly my entire life. We grew up with one due to the discount. When I first moved out, I was genuinely confused why my food was going bad in the refrigerator. I had no concept of how long salad greens, etc. were supposed to last while being refrigerated because the Subzero just took care of everything inside of it.
We live on the second floor of an older house. Our current fridge is on its last legs and we decided to find a new one while it still works. Reading this sub, I have come to following conclusions:
Initially, I thought: no problem. We have a Bosch dishwasher we absolutely love. We'll get a fridge to match. I knew it'd be expensive, but worth it. I measured our space: 69 inches beneath the cabinet. 33 inches between the cabinet and the door way. With these measurements, I trotted off to Lowe's to see if I could get my dream Bosch. Alas! Every Bosch is at least 70 inches tall and 36 inches wide. A petite Bosch (Boschen, if you will) does not exist. I ended up trying to get a GE as it was 75% due to a ding on the side.
Cue arrival of fridge. Excitement is high. The delivery person gets here and proclaims the fridge will not fit. I, baffled, ask how. My current fridge is actually larger than the GE. He only wants to deliver up the back steps, which are 29.5 inches wide. The fridge without doors is 30 inches wide. No problem, I say. Use the front. He refused, stating that to go up the front, he'd have to angle the fridge down half an inch to clear the 68.5 inch low ceiling before you reach the landing, which then has a proper ceiling. Fridges, he proclaims, cannot be angled. I try to explain that the last fridge went up this way. He doesn't believe me. I explained my couch made it through just fine and that thing is 80 inches long and 36 inches wide. A couch is not a fridge, he tells me. Ultimately, I had to return the fridge.
So now, I am back to square one. As I search, I am basically met with the following options: a GE french door (out of stock atm), a GE single door (no water dispenser, but there is ice!), a Cafe french door (internal water dispenser seems less likely to break...is this just a fancy GE?), and a plethora of LG fridges that entice me like a siren and will likely leave me just as unfulfilled.
Should I go with one of the GEs? Do I spring for the Cafe? Is LG ever ok?
fisher paykel.
I think you got an idiot who wanted to find a reason not to deliver it. The up warning is for storing and transporting.
I have a GE French door counter depth with internal water dispenser. (Less parts to break, right?)
Honestly it's been fine. I've had it running for 2 years. Almost exactly. Anyways, my only complaint is the water filter. GE has an rfid tag on their filters and won't let a 3rd party work without it. There are 2 work arounds. Carefully remove the rfid tag from the first filter they give you. Or, (mine didn't come with it or perhaps I didn't see it when it was moved and installed for me) save or get a plug that tells the fridge no filter and use an external in line filter. They sell kits, was easy peasy and it claims to last 5 years.
Just my .02
I’m still baffled at the refusal to enter the front. We’re not talking about a full fridge, right? So just angle it??
So, it was this fridge. It only needed to be titled down so it could make it through the "doorway" of the landing. The landing kinda looks like this set up.
The floor to ceiling of the lower ceiling is 68 inches, so just slight tilt to get it through. Width was 36inches.
You just experienced why you should leave the appliance purchases to appliance stores. That fridge would go in no problem. Lowes, Home Depot, even Costco appliance delivery services are all contracted out and online feedback is a repeated trend of the same thing.
We deliver ALL of our refrigerators on hand trucks, not with lifting straps. They ALL get tilted to 45 or more during the roll in. The oils around the compressor are not going to move away that quickly. Even if you have it laying down for a while, just stand it up for a while before plugging it in. It really is not a big deal.
for sure. My used appliance store purchase, that self delivered, even took the fridge doors off and back on to fit the fridge in my hallway of a kitchen. And they lifted it over my counter to get in the kitchen as well.
Sears did all this for my Samsung delivery (I know, I know, but I actually got a trouble-free one!) all the way back in 2017. It really hits me hard to realize just how rapidly things have deteriorated in just 6 short years.
Basically any fridge is fine if you don’t get one with an in-door ice maker or simply turn off the ice maker.
Well, except Samsung
Ok! I'm open to ones without ice if it's truly that much likely to last longer.
Then you’ll probably be fine with even LG.
LG is not that bad as far as consumer fridges go. IMO people on this sub go crazy with fridges. LG fridges can easily last 5 years and cost $2000 or less. The average person in the US lives in their house for something like 7 years.
Wirecutter recommends an LG fridge as their top pick this year, for what that’s worth.
I would not spend more than $2000 on a fridge. The GE ones you found are perfectly fine.
I think the rule to not tilt the fridge has to do the compressor. If the fridge is titled too far, then the oil in the compressor could flow where it shouldn’t. Many years ago, when working for a moving company, crew were reminded to NOT plug in fridges. The owner would be told to wait 24 hours before plugging in the refrigerator.
I quick search online finds that this is still the case.
So bring that refrigerator up the stairs. And let it sit for a day.
That may have to do with their warranty claims mitigation. Maybe buy it and have someone else deliver? Good luck
First time homeowner in the US. Got everything but the fridge. Any recommendations for…
Brands to avoid? Ive read in some other subreddits to avoid GE.
I ended up doing KitchenAid, which is Whirlpool. They also own Maytag. I wanted a Whirlpool but didn't find one that fit my needs and the KitchenAid did. I'll let you know how it goes in 10 years!
My kitchenaid refrigerator's ice dispenser quit working within a year. Had it fixed under warranty. It broke again e months later. I gave up on it and just get ice out by hand. Also.. if the led light in the fridge ever goes out, either get a flashlight or a new fridge as I read it is not a replaceable part.
Whirlpool is still on top. Possibly followed by Frigidaire. LG and Samsung have a 30% closed system failure rate in the first 5 years. They are popular, but crap really.
The more features in the door you get, the less dependable. Having recently bought a new fridge, I know it can be hard to not find all the bells and whistles in the door. Basically, old school freezer on top is the most reliable. Next would be water only in the door. Avoid the ice maker in the fridge/ door compartment if possible on any model. The techs I talked to when ours failed recently said nothing will last pike the older units (pre 2010).
good to know about ice makers. I was not rich and never had a nice fridge with an ice maker. Now I own a house and need a fridge… I still have my ice trays so I guess I dont need the ice maker.
I was told the in-freezer ice makers have been around for decades and are very reliable. To me, the convenience of in-freezer was worth it. The ice makes in the door of French door style fridges have a separate freezer compartment located in the fridge area. This is incredibly bulky and requires a separate cooling unit, usually leading to two or three cooling coils. This creates several new points of failure and reduces their reliability.
Our new fridge is a three door unit, but has the ice maker in the freezer and water inside the fridge. It was actually kinda hard to find, but we liked the size. I know everyone has different requirements, based on a variety of things.
Also, consider putting it on a credit card to extend the warranty.
Here's the thing about ice makers... nobody makes them. Well let me walk that back a bit -- it's basically one company making them, and everybody buys that company's garbage. You can get service manuals for almost every fridge that call out every single button, switch, what-have-you EXCEPT for the ice maker, which they all list as a complete assembly. So even if you're handy as fuck you can't fix them because nobody has parts for them or can even find parts!
I've had a Bosch fridge for the last 19 years: it's still going strong and never had any problems. Lately the light has gotten a bit slow to turn on, but that's it.
EDIT: of course, I have no idea if they still make them like they used to.
Not the direct answer you're looking for, but to maximize value see if there's a scratch and dent store near you. They sell brand new appliances with cosmetic defects for a discount. If your kitchen setup has your fridge boxed in on three sides, you might not even be able to see the damage once it's installed.
Not a Samsung. We’ve had terrible luck with ours, and some of my family with theirs.
Ditto. I know quite a few people who've had terrible experiences with Samsung refrigerators. Appliance guy also told me to avoid their stoves.
Yeah, Samsung hardware is just shitty in appliances in general.
Anything but a Samsung. Had one we purchased in my last home. Ice maker leaked forever. Happy to leave it behind.
You constantly complain about your stomach hurting even though you boast about being healthy not realizing that you keep sensitive perishables in the door of the fridge.
No, but incredibly good point, thank you for pointing that out 😩😂 definitely could have become an issue at some point
Yea these style refrigerators are chilled by freezer AND the door offers very little insulation so it is generally warmer than the top shelf towards the back.
Well balanced adult. Possibly serial killer.
The note on the fridge broken down into meal -> protein -> veg/sides is very organized. Definitely taste that is a bit old fashioned, more "bland" and not overpowering flavors. I don't mean that in a bad way.
And I may be way off base here but this screams northern US to me, possibly New England, and maybe French or French Canadian background. But that's more of a shot in the dark than anything.
I'm curious what made you think New England/French Canadian. That's very specific!
I'm from New England, not French myself but know plenty of people with French backgrounds. I find the Frenchies have a more "old fashioned" palette for meals, like your menu. Basic meat and potatoes kind of stuff. You use a lot of onions and specifically have au jus written instead of gravy. Plus a lot of the brands in your fridge are ones that I also buy! Like I said, it was more of a total shot in the dark than anything.
If you aren't french, maybe you should try some of their cuisine! I bet you'd enjoy beef bourguignon or a good french onion soup. Or pate chinois!
Get those tomatoes out of the fridge
I know better I promise 😂 I need them for a cold prepared salad for a potluck
Christmas Crack! That’s all the matters 😍
We're remodeling the kitchen and looking to replace the existing fridge. We're still laying out, so I don't have actual dimensions--but assume I've got all the space in the world.
I've heard of Subzero, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, etc. but that's just a measure of each company's branding operation. What design features or quality hallmarks should I be paying attention to as I'm cross shopping these expensive, cold beasts?
+Miele
This. Miele rules all, except for Gaggenau which is off the charts
This! We are very brand loyal to Miele, my parents have one that says “made in west Germany”, it’s so old but still runs great.
Pay for a month of Consumer Reports to be shocked by the reliability ratings of most "high end" brands - and definitely negotiate/pay for an extended warrantee. I checked CR last year, Miele scored better than most brands for appliance reliability in most categories but you pay more and don't get flashy red dials or anything like that. There was one American brand that had good ratings in just refrigeration - I think Thermador.
EDIT - Thermador is also German hehehehe. No shocker.
Some public libraries have access to CR
This is an excellent point! I never thought to check. I did learn last year (from Reddit) that my local library provides access to many of the big global newspapers digital editions.
(end of list)
I like you
Anything not labeled samsung is a good start
Amen. Ice maker already broken after one year. Crap design.
That’s by design to get you to buy a new one every 2-3 years.
At those prices, I’d say look to be sure they actually make them. I think at least one of those is just a mainstream brand with some cosmetic changes and different branding.
idk what homestuck is at all and I found this on my feed but GLASSES MAN ON DA FRIDGEEEE!?!?
