TL;DR
Chemical Exfoliants
Chemical exfoliants are a favored choice for treating keratosis pilaris (KP). Glycolic acid is frequently mentioned, with products like The Inkey List Glycolic Acid Exfoliating Body Stick being highlighted for its effectiveness [2],
[5]. Users have also recommended the Alpha Skincare Renewal Body Lotion with 12% glycolic acid for its gentle nature and ability to reduce redness
[4:8]. Salicylic acid is another option that some find helpful
[1].
Physical Exfoliation
Physical exfoliation can be beneficial, especially when combined with chemical treatments. Exfoliating mitts are popular, with users suggesting using them on wet skin after warming up in the shower [3:1]. African net sponges and Turkish exfoliating mitts are also mentioned as effective tools
[1],
[3]. However, it's important not to over-exfoliate, as it can exacerbate KP
[4:6].
Moisturizing
Moisturizing is crucial in managing KP. Many users emphasize the importance of moisturizing after exfoliation to prevent dryness and irritation [4:6]. Products containing urea, such as Eucerin Repair with Urea 10%, are noted for their effectiveness in reducing KP symptoms
[4:5],
[4:11]. Combining moisturizers with vitamin supplements like A, D, and Omega 3s has also shown improvement in KP
[4:3].
Product Recommendations
Several specific products are recommended across discussions:
These products, along with consistent exfoliation and moisturizing, can help manage KP effectively.
Hey! Just wondering what exfoliation methods/products y’all prefer or recommend? I have kp like everywhere from shaving, scars and dark spots, my ingrowns?? Man I need any and everything that can help! Rn I use a rag but I plan on switching to African net sponges… but for my body acne I’m thinking I need a really good chemical exfoliate. Salicylic acid kinda works. Thanks!
Check out the Triple Treat lotion from Platinum Skin Care. It’s 25% acid. I’m using it to treat my kp.
This is specifically for KP on the legs right?
Legs and arms! But I guess I’m mostly looking for something that’ll help with scars and dark spots before dealing w my kp lol
u/notyournat isn’t there one from the Ordinary that you recommend?
Yup, the glycolic acid toner
BushBalm products are great when you’re consistent! You can use their ingrown body scrub, dark spot oil, and rescue roller (ingrown solution).
You can try Naturium for an exfoliating body wash.
Thank you!
Hi everyone, just thought I'd drop a post in to share the products and methods I use because I've noticed a real improvement over the last month. I have found that doing a gentle scrub pretty much every day keeps the KP at bay, and products wise I use:
I don't use all of these products every time, but I do use all at least twice a week. I feel so much softer and smoother so I had to share ☺️
Does this treat the redness and bumps or just the bumps?
Mostly bumps but the redness is less obvious too. I sometimes use a light and moisturising fake tan to even out my overall skin tone.
Most people don't have issues with the bumps and roughness. They have issue with the red dots.
Which exfoliating mitt do u use?
Hi all, just wondering if anyone else has the same problem as me / know what's going on. I use a turkish exfoliating mitt once every 3 weeks and on most areas of my body it's great and I can visibly see dead skin cells being exfoliated but on areas where I have kp - nothing. Like I can't exfoliate my skin there it's so weird and frustrating.
Interesting - I’ve never had that issue. I have used the exfoliating mitts for years with a lot of success in reducing KP.
Remember to let your skin get really warm and soft in the shower before using. But don’t soap up your body. (Soap or shower gel should be used only after the exfoliating process.) Then turn off the water and use a dry mitt on my wet skin to increase friction. Then I scrub away (not too hard, but I do use some pressure). I like to use black mitts so I can really see and appreciate how much skin comes off!
Yup it's so weirdd idg 😩😩
I have horrific KP, all down my arms, back, butt, legs, and even on my face. I have found that exfoliating less and moisturizing more has been the key to keeping the bumps under control. I dry brush my entire body every night, and slather myself with unscented Aveeno lotion. For my face, I exfoliate at night with a glycolic acid toner (currently using the Pixi Glow Tonic, which is 5% glycolic acid) and use a hyaluronic acid serum in addition to a heavier moisturizer than what I would use during the day (I love the Fenty Instant Reset gel cream), topped with a couple drops of pure argan oil.
I feel similarly, physical exfoliation makes my KP worse. I wash with a rough-ish textured washcloth for some light physical exfoliation, and use glycolic acid for chemical exfoliation. And using moisturizing lotions and stuff has been a huge game changer compared to my teenage years thinking my bumps were acne and I needed to strip my skin of all it's oil 😭
Supplementing with vitamin A, D, and Omega 3s helped my KP a lot, I see ~50% reduction in symptoms with that routine. I'm not sure which vitamin(s) it is that is helping my KP since I take them all together, but that was the only thing I changed and I didn't even know it could happen and woke up one morning and my skin looked great. I stopped taking them for 3 months and my skin looked so bad that my mom noticed. Gentle physical exfoliation, alpha hydroxy acid products, and heavy moisturizing products helped my KP a lot as well. I use a washcloth and wash with a gentle soap in the shower, use a glycolic acid moisturizer, and seal it in with olive oil on my arms after it has dried down. The exact products aren't important, I've used ~5 AHA products on my arms and they all kept my bumps away, and the olive oil step could be replaced with another oil or thick moisturizer you like better.
Eucerin repair with Urea 10% helps a lot. I also sometimes use the KP scrub that is really popular. Way worse when my water is really hard. I am looking to switch to a more moisture rich body wash to see if it helps.
This! I have tried the KP scrub and all kinds of cream but the urea eucerin lotion and manual scrubbing in the shower has seemed to help if I keep it up consistently
Eucerin is a miracle honestly
I have some 40% urea foot cream. I mix a little dab in with my lotion. Works wonders.
If you only exfoliate without moisturising a lot afterwards it's just exacerbating it
I cycle between Cerave SA lotion, Aveeno Unscented and Coconut oil - skin is currently smooth and bump free, but SO much dead skin comes off every day it’s insane.
Ever see those Italy towel videos where they scrub and all the grey strings come off? I get tons of those every day. Even if I dedicate 20 mins exfoliating a day in the shower the next day I still get the same amount.
It’s like I have wolverine healing powers but for my skin. And if I skip exfoliating for like a week the build up is insane.
I use the Alpha skincare renewal body lotion with 12% glycolic acid twice a day. It’s gentle, has no smell (I’m looking at you AmLactin) it leaves my skin soft, tones down the redness BUT my skin is never 100% bump free. It clears about 90% of it.
Interesting.. I experimented with the ordinarys lactic acid and am nearly bump free but not redness free, might have to try the lotion
I experimented with vitamin A for aging and kp made me nearly reptilian I was shedding so much.
So I’ve got ADHD/OCD related dermatillomania. Couple that with keratosis pilaris and I have two arms filled with bumps and scars. Lately I’ve been using the “Glycolic Acid Exfoliating Body Stick” a couple times a day. It helps with getting rid of the KP, yes, but most importantly it leaves a greasy sheen behind that makes it impossible to pick. It’s a bit expensive compared to something like the Ordinary’s glycolic acid that comes in a bottle. The major selling point for me is the ease of application and the texture of the product. I leave it on my side table by my couch (where I primarily find myself picking) and put it on as a rule before sitting down. It’s helped tremendously!
I gotta try this. I have the same situation. ADHD, OCD, KP, derma, anxiety. It’s a nightmare having all of these and each one makes the rest worse
Thanks! I’m going to try this out.
Thankyou for this advice!
Oh I've just found this! I gotta say, forcing myself to NOT TOUCH my skin for application is a ✨ game changer 💥 I got it for 13,50€ on sale and WOW. That is SO cool. My problem is always that once I've started looking for rough/bumpy, I cannot stop. So summer - skin isn't covered by clothing - my fingertips are on he roam. But here? I just apply it and there's NO TOUCHING... Damn.
Have to add to OP - you're using too much. It's advised everywhere to use this body stick just 2-3 times per week, and if you're good with it, you can do daily. But several times per day? That's too much exfoliating acids and might have bad results down the line.
Why don't you try something else in stickform without the amount of acids (and price) of the Inkey List body stick, since you're writing you use it for the vaseliney feeling it leaves on the skin? 🫠
hi im looking to buy a kp scrub. has anyone tried kp bump eraser (first aid beauty), kp body scrub & mask (naturium) & kp body smoother glycolic body scrub (saltair)?
i’m looking to know which one i should buy. pls comment if you’ve tried any of those products, if you like them, & which one you prefer if you’ve tried all of them.
thank you for reading ☺️
I’d use a glycolic acid wash or serum.
La Roche Posay Urea lotion has been a game changer for me! I tried countless scrubs, soaps, etc. This is the first time I’ve had smooth legs in the winter in like twenty years.
which urea have you tried or prefer? I see they have 10% & 5+ not sure which one is the best ?
I honestly didn’t realize that they had different strengths! I bought the 10% and I use it at night before bed once or twice a week.
AmLactin is tried and true
I've never found any scrubs that helped.
I decant some glycolic acid toner into a spray bottle and apply when I get out of the shower before moisturising.

I’ve tried a ton of things that would make it better but if I lapsed a few days the KP would come back fast (dry brushing, coconut oil, Paula’s choice 2 % BHA lotion, rough and bumpy lotion, stridex, salux towels, Korean exfoliation mitts, Mario basdescu AHA shower gel)
I am now using Glytone Exfoliating Body Wash Body Therapy 8.8% on a soft loofah every time I shower and moisturizing after with either Cerave SA Lotion or a regular body lotion (Vaseline intensive care currently). I still use a salux cloth with the AHA MB shower gel before the Glytone but that’s just because I want to use it up. The Glytone took a few weeks or so to work but the KP bumps on my arms are GONE and they have stayed gone even if I don’t use it. It’s taking longer on my legs but I think that’s because my hair is super fine and I don’t shave often so they are itty bitty ingrowns, but it has made a big difference.
I put 6-8 pumps of Glytone in the loofah and step out of the shower stream to lather my arms and legs and let the lather sit a bit before washing it off (I lather the parts I want the soap to sit on first So once I’m done with the rest of my body it’s sat long enough and I rinse). In the beginning I used Cerave SA Lotion on my arms to speed the process along but have been forgetting. I am over the moon that this has really helped rather than just work temporarily. I bought it on amazon :)
Have you had any issues with your skin burning with the wash? I used the lotion and if I veered too far from the kp area or applied it too thick, I would give myself a chemical burn. I eventually gave up on it because it didn’t completely clear the area, so the burns weren’t worth it.
I use a exfoliating mitt I got at TJ Maxx (Earth Therapeutics I believe) every day in the shower on the backs of my arms with Neutrogena Body Clear Salicylic Body Wash, and I follow it with Cerave SA Lotion for Rough and Bumpy Skin. It works like a charm!
Two questions:
Do you think a normal shower loofah is equivalent to an exfoliating mitt? I'm not sure how comparatively exfoliatey they are.
How well does the Cerave lotion absorb in? I got the Gold Bond equivalent and it's awful, it leaves a greasy residue that never goes away (I had to stop using it because the residue was accumulating on my toilet seat, lol).
I think the important part is just that you exfoliate! Most exfoliators will work. I actually think my mitt is about the same as my shower poof. I just like the grippyness of it lol!
That’s exactly why I didn’t get the Gold Bond!!! The Cerave absorbs like a dream and makes my skin feel soooo soft. Sometimes I put it on my legs to prevent ingrown hairs after shaving too. I feel like a silky smooth dolphin after.
I just want to warn you that the cerave SA lotion is a long-term thing! I was discouraged with it for a while as my KP is especially bad and it gets ugly before it gets better because the SA essentially eats away the dead skin, bringing it to the surface. So you might have some discoloration or excess dead skin coming off in that area for a while before you look smooth and pretty. Keep at it!
I've never used that brand/specific one, but I bought some exfoliating gloves (with fingers) on eBay several months ago and can't recommend them enough. Physical exfoliation twice a week has made a big difference in my KP (along with moisturizing the areas to absolute death and chemically exfoliating), and the gloves make it so much easier! I think I spent maybe $6 on the pair, expecting them to break down after a few months, but they haven't worn down (or torn, etc) at all.
I just started using AmLactin rapid relief and in less than a week the bumps on my legs are almost completely gone after years of having them. Nothing else (CeraVe SA body wash, eucerin rough and bumpy, exfoliating mitt, body scrubs) has worked for me. I also just got QRxLabs 10% Glycolic 2% SA peel pads and will update on how that works out.
I get the generic of AmLactin from my pharmacy (it's like half the price) and oh man it has cleared the KP bumps on my shoulders and arms like nothing I've ever tried before. It's also been amazing for fading scars I have from surgery and acne marks on my back. Best $8 I've ever spent.
I second this. I've been using Eucerin's 10% Urea lotion (250ml) for the last 2 months and I can say i haven't seen my Keratosis since I've used it.

My biggest issue is finding a body wash that's not so harsh on my skin, doesn't leave me itching after my shower and is inexpensive :/
I get my mitts at Target, different brand (usually Ecotools, but my Target switches it up sometimes) and have been using them for about ten years now, love them!
I also dry brush when I remember and use the Goldbond rough & bumpy cream, but I’m not in love with it and hopefully will find some new options here :)
If anyone’s tried the Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA, I’d love to hear your opinions.
Hey, I’ve tried the PC body lotion, but it was a few years ago and it looks like they have changed the packaging so I’m not sure if the product changed. It smelled nice and felt really nice on the skin. Soaked in quickly and left my skin feeling silky. Not as moisturizing as other lotion, but worked well in summer.
It worked decently on my arms, didn’t do much for my legs (but I rarely shave since my hair is so fine, so a good amount of the bumps may also be tiny ingrowns). Works well when paired with a good physical exfoliation mitt. However, if I didn’t use it the KP came back in a few days. It’s not a fix but will help manage it.
I would appreciate any suggestions!
My KP was caused by gluten intolerance 😅 I use to use body scrubs and lotions and they never worked. I went gluten free for a different reason and it ended up being the cause for me. You can have a sensitivity to it without being celiac. It's typically genetic. Otherwise, The hair follicules get extra keratin sometime too, causing KP, so use body wash and lotions that have lactic acid, vitamin A(retinol), ferrulic acid, or glycolic acid. And increase your food intake containing vitamin A. Just thought to bring it up!
Thank you for posting this! My doctor told me today gluten or dairy intolerance could be causing it. Excited to see. Glad you found relief.
Salux or any other exfoliating nylon washcloth. I have KP over my arms and shoulders, so I can scrub pretty hard at it without issue. I've found the physical exfoliation helps clear the way for the chemical exfoliators to have more of an effect.
This is what I use as well. I also apply rich body creams and butter to the KP areas because, for me at least, the KP is a side-effect of very dry skin. As long as I moisturize properly, the KP stays away.
What creams or body butters do you recommend?
You're welcome! Another sign of a wheat/gluten issue besides kp is often rosacea, or deep redness/rash in the face and swelling that doesnt seem to go away with skincare or medicine/herbs.
I've had it on my arms my whole life, my bf suggested coconut oil to moisture about a year ago and it's amazing
Coconut oil is comedogenic!! It also doesn’t absorb well (quickly) and is completely pointless (along with most other forms of moisturizing) if exfoliation has not taken place first!!
It's unfortunate but my skin reacts really badly to coconut oil. Especially on my neck. Big angry hard red bumps. I have to read ingredients really carefully for everything.
I'm glad you mentioned this. I have been doing this for ten years. It made such a difference for me, and it's affordable so people can try it without the huge cost commitment.
But how do you not get it all over your clothes/ bed sheets?
I didn't either, skin and stomach are more connected than we realize. I didn't know until I cut gluten out because of chronic fatigue syndrome and ibs. But lo and behold it also was the culprit for my many skin issues. 😅 sometimes our skin issues is a telling of something our gut isn't digesting well or is causing inflamation. I'll break out when I accidentally eat it and get kp on my arms and chest. It can develop randomly or due to stress, even antibiotics, if it isn't genetic.
There are multiple active ingredients mentioned when it comes to KP, from salicylic acid to AHAs and Urea. What are your favorite products? Do you prefer any specific ingredient for tackling either texture or appearance of KP?
I've looked around and haven't found any up to date talks about this, so I figured let's chat about it!
When I use it daily, the Gold Bond Rough & Bumpy lotion works well to reduce the redness and texture of the KP on my upper arms. It has AHA, BHA, and urea and is $10 for a tub that lasts me several months. I haven’t tried it on any other part of my body for KP but I do use it along my bikini line a few times a week to minimize any bumps/irritation and ingrown hair. Glad this discussion is being updated! I’ll be following!
I use these nightly, straight out of the shower, and it does nothing. But my KP is relentless. I have tried everything for weeks/months at a time and everything just makes it more red and irritated-- AmLactin, Gold Bond with urea, prescription tret-- you name it I've tried it. I've just accepted my fate at this point.
I did the TO red stuff every other day (can't remember the percentage of acids) and at first it was pretty irritated, but after my skin got used to it, the KP patch feels a lot better. Nowadays I use TO mandelic acid 10% every day and occasionally the red stuff. My KP is on my wrist, but on the outside
We’re in the same boat, over the past 7-8 years I’ve tried every combination of physical/chemical exfoliation, body lotion, special body wash, tret, sulfur, and even laser hair removal but my kp still haunts me to this very day. I shed a few tears every time I see someone say they got rid of theirs with a few weeks of amlactin or gold bond rough and bumpy .
Exfoliation is this crap bell curve where too much or too little equals KP and at the high point the KP is never completely gone. F.
I wish I had something new to add to this topic, but I find good ol' 10% urea has been the best for keeping my skin as smooth as possible considering my KP is relatively severe. I've jumped around with brands and I find it doesn't matter what cream I use.
Yeah, mine is pretty severe too. At this point I just make sure I moisturize every day and exfoliate in the shower. The extra sunlight in the summer always helps too--my arms are looking pretty smooth and even-toned these days (for me!).
Were Stridex the ones with BHA? I can't buy them here so I'm not sure :)
I'm in Europe right now and like u/Nomisan I'm using the Cien one from Lidl atm! In Canada I've tried Urisec, Eucerin, Garnier, and a few more I'm forgetting.
The only one I actively don't recommend is from Mixa if you're in Europe - I found the fragrance in it overwhelming.
I’ve had KP since puberty, and that combined with my picking compulsion has meant scans and bumps on my arms constantly for 16 years. Today, for the first time since I was 12, my arms are completely blemish free, and smooth as a baby’s ass thanks to MEAT TENDERIZER. I saw it in the spice aisle a couple weeks ago while grocery shopping, remembered it from SCA days of yore (c. 2014/15?), and decided to give it a go. Ingredients were sugar, salt, bromelain (pineapple enzymes), maltodextrin. I figured at worst it’d be a salt/sugar scrub. When I tell you that my skin has been utterly changed, I am not speaking hyperbolically. This shit is LIT and like $1.49. I just scrub it on in the shower every other day and leave for like a minute, then rinse. I also have been using it on my face with great results but I do it for less time.
I like it but I wouldn’t pay much more than I do for it in the US ($10 US/8.5€ for 8oz) but I imagine there are some good options in Europe we can’t get as easily over here. I’m with you on the redness! It’s not totally gone but it looks a lot better than untreated or when I’ve used just one active instead of a combo.
The first aid KP scrub has cleared mine up really quickly!! My husband even started using it and its working for him too.
Edit to add: the active ingredient in the first aid scrub is AHA
Hiya I’m from the uk and have keratosis pilaris on my upper arms, a bit of my lower arms, thighs and sides of calves. I’ve tried googling but it’s all so stressful with sponsored reviews so I thought I’d come here to ask real people!
Doesnt really go away i have tried everything But KP bump eraser and urea based creams help for sure
