TL;DR
Glycolic Acid Treatments
Glycolic acid is frequently mentioned as an effective treatment for keratosis pilaris (KP). Many users recommend using glycolic acid toners or body washes to exfoliate the skin chemically [1:6],
[2:1]. The Ordinary's glycolic acid toner is cited as a "holy grail" product for KP
[2:1]. Some users suggest applying glycolic acid before bed and moisturizing afterward for optimal results
[1:6].
Urea Creams
Urea creams are another popular option for treating KP. They help to exfoliate and moisturize the skin simultaneously. Users have reported success with products containing urea, such as Eucerin Roughness Relief and Urea 40% cream [2:2]
[4:5]. These creams can be rotated with other lotions containing glycolic or lactic acids for better results
[2:2].
Combination Products
Combining different types of products seems to be a common strategy among users. For instance, using a glycolic acid wash followed by a moisturizer with urea or lactic acid has been effective for some [2:4]. Amlactin, which contains lactic acid, is also recommended for its moisturizing properties
[5:5].
Alternative Remedies
Some users have found success with unconventional treatments like Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo, which contains selenium sulfide [5:3]. This product is applied in the shower and left on the skin for a few minutes before rinsing off. While not a traditional KP treatment, it has helped reduce symptoms for several individuals
[5:4].
Physical Exfoliation
While chemical exfoliants are preferred, physical exfoliation methods like dry brushing or using Korean exfoliating mitts can complement chemical treatments [2:3]
[4:1]. However, over-exfoliation can worsen KP, so it's important to find a balance between exfoliating and moisturizing
[4:12].
In summary, finding the best moisturizer for KP involves experimenting with a combination of chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid, moisturizing agents like urea, and possibly alternative remedies like selenium sulfide shampoos. Regular use and consistency seem to be key factors in managing KP effectively.
I have pretty serious keratosis pilaris and "strawberry skin" on my arms and legs and it is driving me CRAZY. I am also really prone to dry skin and irritation/eczema. It's a lot, I know.
I have had 2 babies in 3 years which exacerbated my skin issues, whether from lack of time to take care of myself or hormonally-driven issues who knows, I am finally ready to solve this and start feeling confident in my skin again.
First off - I am looking for a seriously moisturizing, clean ingredients body lotion. I've tried Alaffia, cera-ve, Eucerine intense moisture, and Attitude lotions none of which really did the trick. Any holy grail (hopefully, affordable) products I should try?
Also so grateful for any tricks of the trade to address other aforementioned issues.
Thanks in advance, everyone!
Another KP-er here, I’ve found that using thinner lotions with humectants/actives and then using another thicker lotion on top if need be helps more than the extra dry skin lotions that just sit on top of KP.
My fav/lotions for KP are the Prequel Urea Advanced Relief and the Bioderma Atoderm Baume (this one is thicker but not in the same way as eucerin/gold bond tend to be)
I use the Bioderma in the winter and the prequel when it’s more humid out.
Also, try using a shower gel with exfoliants, it’s made the biggest difference in my KP, and then the lotion is just extra help!
Hope this helps!
Do you use chemical or physical exfoliants?
Almost always chemical to treat the KP, I just use scrubs when they smell good, I find that they just irritate my skin if I’m trying to smooth out my KP and aren’t as effective.
I would try something with glycolic or Salicylic acid (may take a bit longer), could be a blend. I like the Naturium glycolic and salicylic acid body washes, and they aren’t too expensive. Put it on (ideally leave it on for like 5mins) rinse and follow up with lotion— you should see a reduction pretty quickly if you use it multiple times a week.
The OG is Glytone— it’s pricier but may be worth a try. I’ve never been able to stomach the price for a wash off product, personally 😮💨
Commenting to also get tips! Nothings been a holy grail for me to date… eucerin and cerave work fine but no improvements overall. trying out dry brushing right now but haven’t noticed for better or worse yet.
Would love an update on dry brushing if you remember in a few weeks!
I cannot attest to the efficacy of this, but I have seen several respectable dermatologists recommending the following for KP: first use a generous amount of glycolic acid on top of the KP and while still damp, seal it with a moisturizer that has at least 10% urea cream. I bought the products to try it on my kid’s KP but haven’t done it yet. Will update when I do.
Yessss I’ve just started seeing the testimonies about glycolic acid and I am thoroughly intrigued. This is an easy new routine to implement - thanks for your input!
And inexpensive too! I bought The Ordinary glycolic acid and a small AmLactin moisturizer, both for around $20.
Glycolic acid from the ordinary!! I put some on before bed and in about a month you’ll see a huge difference!!
Yes thank you so much for the tip!
All good! This is my kp on my legs before for reference
Hi all,
I’m 35 and never had KP on my arms before, noticed a month or so ago that I had patches of it on my arms, it’s not red or discolored but very rough to the touch. I’ve heard glycolic acid toner is good but any favorite remedies and has anyone experienced the same in their 30s?
I use exfoliating lotion with urea (the Eucerin Roughness Relief) and rotating it with one that has glycolic and lactic acid.
Korean exfoliating mitts have helped me more than lotions. Don’t overdo it, though. 1-2 a week is enough.
Urea cream 40% with 2% salicylic acid gets rid of it in like two uses and then glycolic toner or body wash keeps it gone.
What brand do you use?
I’ve used four from Amazon and haven’t been able to tell a difference so I go with whatever is cheapest. I’ll spend on the stuff where it matters. Here it does not seem to.
AmLactin
I think this is one my sister uses! it burned my skin though
glycolic toner from the ordinary. it’s literally a holy grail product lol
I occasionally get it, and I’ll either use a scrub or some salicylic acid wash, then glycolic toner swiped on with my hands (only at night), and moisturize it typically clears it up pretty quick.
my sister in her 20s has had pretty severe kp since she was a teenager. she will use kp specific lotions/creams that contain a variety of acids and/or urea. you could try one of those too, but they might be a little strong, depending on your skin sensitivity.
The only thing I've found that helps mine is Magic Lotion by DNA Code. It's not cheap though, unfortunately, but it actually works.
Do you use it daily ?
I started it using it daily for about 2 weeks then every other day.
Gold bond rough and bumpy, has worked the best for me. Still isn't a 100% but it works more than anything else I've tried.
Any moisturizer with urea will help with the spots. I usually find it behind the phamacist counter.
do you shave your arms? My kp got way worse when I starting shaving and way better after stopping. I use gold bond rough and bumpy but am not sure if it’s the best.
Yea I shave my arms and did notice it got worse. But still want to shave
maybe try nair/veet, I wasn’t a huge fan but I’ve seen a bunch of people on this sub say it helps!
Supplementing with vitamin A, D, and Omega 3s helped my KP a lot, I see ~50% reduction in symptoms with that routine. I'm not sure which vitamin(s) it is that is helping my KP since I take them all together, but that was the only thing I changed and I didn't even know it could happen and woke up one morning and my skin looked great. I stopped taking them for 3 months and my skin looked so bad that my mom noticed. Gentle physical exfoliation, alpha hydroxy acid products, and heavy moisturizing products helped my KP a lot as well. I use a washcloth and wash with a gentle soap in the shower, use a glycolic acid moisturizer, and seal it in with olive oil on my arms after it has dried down. The exact products aren't important, I've used ~5 AHA products on my arms and they all kept my bumps away, and the olive oil step could be replaced with another oil or thick moisturizer you like better.
I have horrific KP, all down my arms, back, butt, legs, and even on my face. I have found that exfoliating less and moisturizing more has been the key to keeping the bumps under control. I dry brush my entire body every night, and slather myself with unscented Aveeno lotion. For my face, I exfoliate at night with a glycolic acid toner (currently using the Pixi Glow Tonic, which is 5% glycolic acid) and use a hyaluronic acid serum in addition to a heavier moisturizer than what I would use during the day (I love the Fenty Instant Reset gel cream), topped with a couple drops of pure argan oil.
I feel similarly, physical exfoliation makes my KP worse. I wash with a rough-ish textured washcloth for some light physical exfoliation, and use glycolic acid for chemical exfoliation. And using moisturizing lotions and stuff has been a huge game changer compared to my teenage years thinking my bumps were acne and I needed to strip my skin of all it's oil 😭
Eucerin repair with Urea 10% helps a lot. I also sometimes use the KP scrub that is really popular. Way worse when my water is really hard. I am looking to switch to a more moisture rich body wash to see if it helps.
This! I have tried the KP scrub and all kinds of cream but the urea eucerin lotion and manual scrubbing in the shower has seemed to help if I keep it up consistently
Eucerin is a miracle honestly
I have some 40% urea foot cream. I mix a little dab in with my lotion. Works wonders.
I use the Alpha skincare renewal body lotion with 12% glycolic acid twice a day. It’s gentle, has no smell (I’m looking at you AmLactin) it leaves my skin soft, tones down the redness BUT my skin is never 100% bump free. It clears about 90% of it.
Interesting.. I experimented with the ordinarys lactic acid and am nearly bump free but not redness free, might have to try the lotion
I experimented with vitamin A for aging and kp made me nearly reptilian I was shedding so much.
If you only exfoliate without moisturising a lot afterwards it's just exacerbating it
I cycle between Cerave SA lotion, Aveeno Unscented and Coconut oil - skin is currently smooth and bump free, but SO much dead skin comes off every day it’s insane.
Ever see those Italy towel videos where they scrub and all the grey strings come off? I get tons of those every day. Even if I dedicate 20 mins exfoliating a day in the shower the next day I still get the same amount.
It’s like I have wolverine healing powers but for my skin. And if I skip exfoliating for like a week the build up is insane.
Hey there, not sure if I am in the right place, so feel free to redirect me.
I am 32 and welcomed my first baby earlier this year. Since then, skin on my arms has been much tougher and my KP bumps seem super stubborn.
Has anyone found a product or routine that can help get rid of these? I’ve been using the First Aid Beauty KP scrub a few times a week for 4 months and it’s not really doing much. I just bought some Amlactin 10% lactic acid lotion and I’ve been using after every shower.
Any other suggestions? Thanks!
There is a KP subreddit if you didn't already know!!
There are a lot of products available to help with KP, which is the good news, but the less good news is that it'll be a process of trial and error to see which ones work best for you. Olay makes a pre-shower KP scrub that has worked really well for me (better than the FAB scrub and as a bonus it doesn't leave pumice sand all over my tub). The Peach & Lily KP scrub is also amazing but the packaging isn't great (hard to dispense) plus it's expensive. I haven't found an exfoliating lotion yet that's effective and doesn't smell like hot feet.
Oh perfect thanks so much!!
KP is so stubborn! The only thing thus far that has worked on mine is the dandruff shampoo Selsun Blue. The 1% selenium sulfide in it is magic, at least for my skin. It's around $8 at Target.
I slather it on in the shower, let it sit for 3 mins, then rinse off. I use it 3 or so times a week along with one of those Korean rough cloths, and have experimented with stopping my use of it -- the KP comes back pretty quick. But so long as I keep using the Selsun Blue, it stays under control.
Thank you so much for sharing this info. I bought the shampoo for my dandruff. It helped my stubborn dandruff issue. But recently I started noticing a lot of reduction in my stubborn hand kp also. Though amlactin lotion helped with my hand kp , the smell is unbearable. So I stopped using any products for kp. My luck, after started using selsun blue shampoo it solved both my problems- my dandruff and kp . Even my husband also observed significant reduction in his hand kp. So I totally recommend everybody to try.
Some other subs recommended amlactin and 40% urea cream. I've been using both for the past week or so and have noticed a difference. Not miraculous but enough for me to definitely continue.
Thanks!! Do you use them at the same time?
No I alternate them. I prefer the urea cream (40%) because it smells better.
The same thing happened to me. I found consistently exfoliating with a shower puff and body wash and following up with cerave moisturizing cream worked.
Cerave SA Lotion is my go-to for KP.
The backs of my arms are bumpier than ever, and it’s driving me crazy! But I especially need to clear them up because I’m wanting to get a tricep tattoo next month. I’m going to start exfoliating the area more regularly, but what’s your favorite lotion to follow that up with? I’ve heard something with either urea, alpha hydroxy acid, or salicylic acid. Is one of those better than the others for this?
The only thing that ever worked for me was to first use a manual exfoliating mitt in the shower with your body wash (ideally an AHA based wash), don’t go too hard, just little circles. Then use a 2% salicylic acid wipe after drying off, then apply jojoba oil.
Cerave SA Renewing Lotion is the only one that has worked for me.
So far it's the only one I've tries but it's worked great on my thighs and its solidly 98% gone in the 2 weeks I've been using it. My only complaint is that it smells like soy sauce
How interesting, mine doesn’t smell like anything!
Gold Bond Rough & Bumpy
I like using Am Lactin
I've seen great things with Amlactin or Cerave SA lotion for rough and bumpy skin
Looking for ways to help my KP on my arms. I’ve seen on TikTok some remedies like using a dry brush and using glycolic acid. Urea cream/lotion. Tell me what worked for you. What should I try? What brands? Lotions, toners, and what to wash with. Help! I need all the tips and advice you can throw at me.
My arms look like this and I feel self conscious because it looks like acne and I'm also a skin picker so it's really hard to resist popping them. I've tried 10% urea lotion daily but it doesn't seem to have an effect on them, just moisturises my skin. Urea is supposed to be kerolytic so I'm annoyed it doesn't do anything for my KP. Commenting to hopefully see advice from others, good luck OP
Hopefully someone can give us some recommendations!
I should add that my dermatologist (a really good one) said the trick to KP is less emphasis on exfoliation and more about moisturising the skin. As yours seems raised like mine rather than just flat dots on the skin, I would strongly advise against physical exfoliation on the areas. I think this does more harm than good and inflames the area. Instead, chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid or azaelic acid could be more gentle exfoliation options. Recently I've started using the CeraVe salicylic acid cleanser in the shower. I let it sit on my skin for about 3-5 minutes to let it work before rinsing off. I'm not sure if it's helping me much, maybe it's just too soon to say, but this is often recommended on the sub. Always avoid hot showers/baths as this dries out the skin. Instead, tepid water is ideal. I would also pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing it. Finally, while your skin is still damp, you should apply a moisturiser, like one with urea as this is supposed to break down keratin while moisturising the skin. I hope this will work for you but sadly it seems to do nothing beneficial for my kp. You've probably seen stuff about SmoothKP on this sub - maybe give this a try if you're not seeing any improvements with the methods stated above. The downside is it's really expensive for the amount you get, although I understand the creator is working on reducing costs.
Finally, I hope you don't let it get to you too much. Even though it's somewhat ironic coming from me, who is deeply insecure about it, it really is nothing to be ashamed of. This skin condition affects a shockingly high % of the population and my derm told me that most people don't look at skin this closely or even notice this type of thing. If anything they just look like little freckles! Good luck on your skin journey and remember you aren't alone <3
My forearms look literally identical to yours. I’ve been using Amlactin cream a few times a day and it’s helped with the bumpiness.
It makes me so insecure that I don’t like wearing short-sleeved shirts :(
I’ve tried everything for my keratosis pilaris, and I still have these awful red bumps—especially on my arms. My skin is super fair, almost translucent, so every spot looks extra noticeable. I’ve spent a small fortune on KP products and while some of them make my skin feel smoother to the touch, the visual redness and bumps never really go away.
Here’s what I’ve tried: • CeraVe SA Wash and Moisturizer • The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toner • Urea creams (multiple brands) • Lactic acid creams like AmLactin • Naturium KP Scrub + Glycolic Acid Wash • First Aid Beauty’s entire KP line • SkinFix’s KP line
I’m also doing laser hair removal—the hair is almost gone, but the spots are still there. I even saw a dermatologist who told me to “just exfoliate.” Ma’am… that’s literally all I have been doing. Her only advice was to “keep at it.”
I’m honestly so frustrated. It’s getting warmer and I don’t want to spend another summer feeling like I have to hide my arms.
So I’m asking: is there anything that actually worked for you that’s not on this list? I’m ready to try something more aggressive if it’ll make a difference.
In terms of nutrition, for a few horrible months I went gluten, dairy, and sugar free—spoiler: it didn’t nothing except make me miserable. In terms of supplements, I take a multivitamin, Vitamin D, a probiotic, omega 3-6-9 and Magnesium + Calcium.
Also open to good transfer-proof makeup or body concealers that can hide this stuff. I just want my skin to look clear, even if it’s just for special occasions.
I have my routine for KP down now since the start of this year. My KP is almost non existant now:
-body brushing in the shower when the water is running. Use a brush with rubber nubs (such as the one in the link) and start brushing from your ankels up towards the rest of your body in an upwards motion. Doing this while the water is already running works so much better for my KP. link to the brush
-follow your body brushing right away with an exfoliating mitten (1 time a week) or a body wash/soap. I rotate the pelicans back acne soap, the kwailnara cleanser, dr bonner lavender soap and the dove beauty bar. I switch it up daily.
-after showering i apply the kwailnara body lotion (this stuff is truely magic in a bottle. It has make old scars and stretchmarks fade and it soothes my KP like no other), shortly followed by johnsons baby oil (pink cap) all over my body.
I’ll need to look into this kwailnara brand—which wash and moisturizer specifically?
I actually use a similar brush but not every day. Maybe I’ll try it more consistently!
i do not notice any differences between the kwailnara lotions and cleansers different scents. at the moment i am using the green tea cleanser and the oathes lotion, but i find them all very similar. they just have a slightly different smell, so since i dislike the smell of coconut i gave my bottles of the coconut scent to my mom. they have like half a dozen scents, so there is something for everybody. i buy them from yesstyle or stylevana, but if you have a tk or tj maxx in your country you can something find them for like half the price!
and yes, body brush daily when in the shower!!! it will help you so much!
i love my exfoliating mittens! they work so well for kp.
Itll never completley go away for most ppl but I think that another issue could be how you use products. If youre truly desperate but responsible the next stop from the ceravr would ve just pure salicylic acid (besides the normal shower scrubbing. The issue is that you have to do it every single day and for months to gauge the effect.
I know, and I am consistent! 😓 I do some sort of exfoliation and moisturize every day, until I use up the bottles— then will realize that it hasn’t worked as well as I would like and will switch to something new! I’ve been at it for years. So tired.
The thing is KP is overproduction of skin technically so for some ppl over exfoliating will actually make it worse. Ive spent some more time looking at the pic and unfortunately you have the kind that will never go away 100% but its also not so bad it looks to be a lot around hairs. Unfortunately it just means that to work with it you need to figure out a moisturizer that works for you, (i recommend two kind because my skin gets “used” to stuff very fast and so lotions become less effective. Just as for some it take a bit longer to work.) You also need a better shaving prep. (or wait until the laser treatments are done. ) (but frankly im confused that the laser ppl didn’t recommend a laser treatment for the kp which is a thing.. they are usually done at the same places its insanely expensive tho.) Finally the way you moisturize is important. Best effect is after warmshowers (altho that doesnt mean you have to shower everyday.) pat dried skin. Dollop on the hand and then circular motions roughly the size of half your palm. Its not the same as just slathering lotion on like most ppl do. Youre rubbing it into the skin.
And the saddest part is if you stop itll go back to exactly as it was when you started. (most likely.)
On the other hand 99% of ppl dont notice kp and dont care about it.
Any salicylic acid recommendations? 🙂
Sorry I bought some abroad at an old timey pharmacy and it was just pure salicylic acid. Ive heard for some that there are creams with different % and that can help. Altho I feel uncomfortable to give tips w/o knowing youre routine and other products since they can counteract like I mentioned before I suspect youre issue is more about HOW youre using products not the products themselves.
Have you tried Inkey List Glycolic Acid body stick? I have chicken skin on the back of my legs and the stick has been helping me quite a bit.
Try AmLactin intensive healing with 15% Lactic Acid. You’ll be better in no time!
Welcome to r/skincare_addiction! We'd like to take this time to remind you of a few things:
#Do not ask for a diagnosis/treatment advice for acne or other medical conditions, and do not play doctor
What constitutes medical advice?
This is asking someone to diagnose the issue, and is medical advice.
This is asking someone to advise treatment, and is medical advice.
This is asking if you should seek treatment, and ergo, medical advice.
If you would ask the question of your doctor, it falls under this rule and not allowed. As a general rule, asking for medical advice from internet strangers is never a good idea. If you have questions regarding your acne or other medical condition, you are advised to contact your healthcare provider. If you are a medical provider, we would gently remind you that users are not patients, and you should not be offering medical advice to people who are not your patients.

Would love product recommendations for this!! I’ve only ever gotten mine to go away when living in climates that are hot and humid year round. Currently living somewhere very dry and cold, and I can’t seem to get my skin to be fully moisturized and supple which makes my KP worse. Any recs? I have gotten it to smooth out using a 20% urea lotion but the dark dots are still there
I swear by the First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Scrub ! I use it on my affected areas and bikini zone. Works wonders. Best of luck!
Can you share your routine please? I keep hearing mixed reviews on this product.
I may order that then. Thanks!
Question. I live outside of the US and Amlactin will cost twice as much, as will most of these products. Will it be okay if I add some salicylic acid ointment to a regular lotion? Pretty sure I've seen some 12% salicylic acid in drugstores...
You certainly could but I wouldn't store it more than a few days at the most. Make very small batches.
Just apply it straight first, allow to dry, then apply the lotion of your choice. You're not a chemist so you don't know how the chemicals from the lotion will react to the 12% SA.
That’s actually very intuitive. I don’t see why that would be an issue, but I’ve honestly never done that before, so I can’t give you a confident answer. Great idea though. That’s a great question for the thread.

My rough skin, thanks you😘
recently, i’ve decided to put more effort into my skincare. one thing that really bothers me is my keratosis pilaris. i have rough skin in the first place from sun damage (from working outside, not intentional tanning) and various scars, but having all these tiny bumps on my skin make it worse. while it’s visually obvious for my legs, it’s mostly physically obvious for my arms.
i’ve been using moroccan black soap once a week to exfoliate which HAS helped a lot, but i don’t know what’s the proper lotion to use, especially considering my rough skin. i’ve been using Goldbond rough and bumpy skin, but it gives me sensory issues with the feeling of it on my skin.
what is a lotion that will help my skin become softer and smoother? are there any more treatments besides the black soap i can use for my legs?
i would like a short routine with not many steps. if it’s too long, there’s a chance i will end up dropping it and never pick it up again
Cerave SA Cream has helped me a ton
you could try lotion with urea in it. i see amlactin products suggested by derms a lot. exfoliating with glycolic acid (the ordinary and prequel sell pretty big bottles of it) can help as well!
Are you brand new to skincare? Don't know how to build a skincare routine? The best place to start is our ScA Routine!
You can find even more skincare guides in our wiki!. Your answer might already be in there (and if it is, we might remove your post).

You can’t try BABÉ repairing lotion with 10% UREA
I personally use the La Roche-Posay Lipikar Urea 10% lotion, and I find that it works great! Give it like a week and your skin will be way smoother
best moisturizers for keratosis pilaris
Key Considerations for Moisturizers for Keratosis Pilaris (KP):
Ingredients: Look for moisturizers that contain:
Texture: Creams or lotions that are thick and emollient are often more effective for KP, as they provide better hydration.
Fragrance-Free: Choose products that are fragrance-free to minimize irritation, as sensitive skin can react to added fragrances.
Non-Comedogenic: Ensure the moisturizer is non-comedogenic to avoid clogging pores.
Recommendations:
AmLactin Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion: Contains lactic acid and is well-regarded for KP treatment. It helps exfoliate and hydrate the skin effectively.
CeraVe SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin: This lotion contains salicylic acid and ceramides, making it a great option for smoothing and moisturizing KP-prone areas.
Eucerin Roughness Relief Cream: Formulated with urea and other moisturizing ingredients, this cream is effective for rough skin and KP.
Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA: This lightweight lotion contains salicylic acid, which helps to exfoliate and smooth the skin.
Takeaway: Consistent use of these moisturizers, combined with gentle exfoliation, can significantly improve the appearance of keratosis pilaris. Always patch test new products to ensure they don’t irritate your skin.
