For me, the best one and a must see kdrama in Netflix is Mr. Sunshine, that drama is just beautiful, as a whole I thought it was perfect, loved the characters, writing, music, cinematography, aesthetics, everything is beautiful.

It is a drama set at the end of Joseon period and the beginning of the Japanese occupation of Korea, which lasted from the end of 19th century to 1940something, it is a love story, but it is a sad story, I assure you tho, you won't regret watching this beautiful drama

My Mister - A very emotional slice of life drama about two people who save each other. The emotional impact of this drama is exceptional. I think this is the best Korean drama that I've watched. It is slow and takes 3 or 4 episodes to get going.

Romance is a Bonus Book - This drama follows the employees of a book publisher. I love the characters and plot. It has a very satisfying ending. This is the first drama I watched twice.

One Spring Night- A realistic slice of life romance about a single father and a librarian. I love what the son says when he first meets the FL!

It's Okay to not be Okay - A romantic drama about mental illness with interesting characters and a lot of style.

Her Private Life - The leads work at a museum and FL runs a fansite for a K-pop idol.

Hospital Playlist - A medical slice of life drama about a group of friends who all work at a hospital and play in a band for fun. Very heartwarming.

Navillera - A slice of life drama about a grandfather who wants to learn ballet. It's very heartwarming.

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha - A dentist moves to a small town and meets the local handyman. This well done romanctic comedy has lots of interesting characters.

Search: WWW - This drama has 3 strong female leads and I thought it was well written. The plot involving internet search companies is interesting and unique. Romance isn't the focus and the romance in Search: WWW unsatisfying but not sad. The cinematography is among the best in a Korean drama.

Familiar Wife - This time travel drama has a slice of life aspect as the ML works in the branch office of a bank. It also makes an interesting statement about the choices we make in life. Familiar Wife has my favorite joke in a Korean drama, "Why does a chicken coop have two doors?"

Good list. I will add:

Little Women 3 sisters struggle to survive in dangerous circumstances and some gothic flair around some murders

Lost. Superb slow burn indie drama beautifully produced.

Kingdom a twist on people getting virus from some mysterious plants given to a dying king a scheming second pregnant wife is trying to keep alive. Crown prince from first marriage is only one to help.

Kingdom is amazing. I never would have thought you could combine period costume drama with zombie action, but it works. It terrifyingly works. Even better, the typical costume drama in-fighting drives the plot.

Yeah it’s brilliant. It’s like a well made movie only with episodes. The acting and cinematography. And the story is like a fable that’s relevant for today even. And I still hope they can make season three.

Season 1 was so awesome. It really is hard to compare to anything else. Cast ensemble was the greatest ever. I'm so glad FL did not return for season 2. The rest of the Cast was amazing for 2 and what they had to work with. The writing for the FL plot was awful.

Business Proposal is more tropey but refreshing and funny; also really liked the second lead couples (some tropes: >!CEO ML and employee FL, blind dating, fake couple!<)

The Beauty Inside has an interesting synopsis that almost turned me away but I really liked it (plus the OSTs are great)

Mad for Each Other is hilarious and unconventional but also deals with mental health and some more serious topics

Extraordinary Attorney Woo focuses on multiple court cases throughout, and ML is one of the greenest flags out there

[deleted] · 2 years ago

Attorney Woo is a Rom-Com? Nooooooo! I don't watch those. The relationship with Joon-Ho was one of my favourite bits though, apart from the Cetacean epiphanies and the unintended sas.

Itaewon Class is also quite good and also not a romance. 🤥

I liked Hometown Cha Cha Cha. It may not be everyone's taste, but those dimples. 🥰

I also liked Tomorrow, Uncanny Counter, K2 and My Name. My Name is just slightly violent.

  • Beyond Evil - Two frenemy cops who are both hiding things chase a been-doing-this-for-a-while serial killer. Both are unreliable narrators through most of the show. Excellent dialogue. No romance. Mystery. Great show.
  • Flower of Evil - A husband who is hiding things and his cop wife chase a(nother) been-doing-this-for-a-while serial killer. Watch this one for their awesome marriage. They're totally couples-goals material.
  • The Glory - Trigger warning: Abuse. Revenge flick.
  • Mr. Queen - A very full of himself modern top chef is transmigrated into the body of a young queen in ancient Korea. Funny as all git out before it gets more serious. Like really really funny.
  • Kingdom 1&2 - Zombies! in a historical setting. The Crown Prince travels to a distant county to check out some reported trouble while the court does something unspeakable.
  • My Mister - Just a quiet masterpiece slice-of-life drama.
  • Reply 1988 - Another masterpiece slice-of-life drama.
  • Business Proposal - Romcom with every romcom cliche the Koreans know... done right. And you don't know all of them yet, so enjoy!
  • Mr. Sunshine - Set during the Japanese Occupation period of Korea. A little thriller. A little mystery. A little romance. Great drama.
  • Tale of the Nine Tailed - Eastern Asia doesn't really do Vampires and Zombies, because they have another folklore character called the nine-tailed fox. This is a fun romance built around the supernatural world of the gumiho.

I've seen a few Kdramas on Netflix and LOVED them. Crash Landing On You, Mr Queen, Business Proposal, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Start Up and Welcome to Waikiki were all amazing. I am a little lost as to what to watch next though. I don't hear people talking about the other titles on Netflix as much so I would love any Netflix recommendations that are not excessively sad or gory/scary.

That's a really good list but we're talking about Netflix and you systematically missed all dramas of the son of Netflix???

Nevertheless - romance, drama

My Demon - fantasy, romance

Forecasting Love and weather - romance, comedy

I'm tempted to say Sweet Home too just for Song Kang (S1 is good in its own right tbh, S2 not so much imo) but it can get gory in parts

Well, all the dramas I have listed are some of the best in each category (according to me) that are available on Netflix and are not dark dramas. I am sorry but None of his dramas are worthy to be on this list.

I would have happily included Sweet Home S1 (I love this show) BUT yeah, as you said, its gory and scary.

Yesss my demon. Stopped watching after first ep thinking it’d be too cheesy but super glad I came back around to it. Loved the chemistry, the main leads look soooo good together <3

Along with what others wrote, I really enjoyed the premise of Hello, Me! It’s not like other shows and really makes you think, plus it’s pretty funny.

You have to watch Hometown Cha Cha Cha and Like Flowers in Sand- such a fun small town vibe and slice of life shows.

[REQUEST] What great K-Drama do you recommend?

Posted by go_for_it_baby · in r/NetflixBestOf · 4 years ago

For some time now I've mainly discovered Korean series for myself. It's very refreshing to see stories from a different perspective. The culture, life and traditions are partly very different from Europe and it is fun to learn more about them.

I especially liked Money Flower, Vagabond, Kingdom and My Country. I'm looking for other gems.

Can someone recommend something great that I should definitely watch?

Signal was quite a good thriller. I also like Midnight Diner, it is a Japanese drama though.

I will second midnight diner and midnight diner: Tokyo stories. Very light hearted episodes centered around a dish and story. Not Korean but gives some perspective on Japanese food, culture and society.

Reply 1988! It does a marvelous job immersing you to South Korea 30-35 years ago, and is carried by an insanely good cast dynamic. You'll feel nostalgic for a time and place you've never been to (unless you've been to South Korea in the 80s-90s, but that's beside the point).

SO GOOD and wholesome, I love that there's very little drama. I grew so attached to all the characters and was so sad when it ended. Have you seen the other Reply series? I watched a few episodes of each and was literally pissed that they were so incredibly bad!

I'll 2nd Uncanny Counter, and also add Extracurricular. I'm not a huge K Drama fan, but I really enjoyed both.

The only Korean show I've ever watched is What's wrong with Secretary Kim and I liked it even though the cheesiness made me cringe. Can someone recommend me any good shows to binge-watch

If you like Realistic dramas:

  1. Stranger (2017): An investigative crime drama, with really good acting by the two leads, with an unpredictable plot and twists, that has a little bit of politics between police and prosecutors. Would only recommend season 1.
  2. My Mister (Starring IU, Leen Sun Gyun) : really dark, heart aching drama about broken people who heal each other, a bit slow paced but soothing to watch.
  3. Something in the Rain (2017) & One Spring Night (2019) : Created by the same writer, both stars Jung Hae-in, and revolves around relationships that are frowned upon / or considered taboo in Korean society. Very naturalistic acting, and shares casts with really good acting. I personally prefer something in the rain, but both are worth the watch!
  4. Misaeng (2014): an office drama with a fantastic cast, and great writing, which is so realistic in portraying the lives of up and coming young adults starting out work in a big corporation, which depicts each of their struggles, especially the sensitive lead (played by Siwan) who starts out as an intern without the educational background. Every character here grows over time, and shows office politics can be very interesting and dramatic. Check out Hell is other people (for more of Siwan!)

Romantic Comedy / Dramas:

  1. When the Camillia Blooms (2019): the best romantic comedy I have watched which shows how funny Kang Ha Neul can be, raising all standards for men with his very sensitive, honest, open performance as a police man who protects Gong Yo Jin's character who is a beautiful single mom who is headstrong and independent, but a bit of a pushover. The show mixes genres naturally, with serial killer on the lose mixed with rom com.
  2. Start Up (2020): The biggest kdramas of the end of the year, very popular kdrama with great leads, especially Kim Seon ho (a successful business investor with a big heart who is incredibly rational and honest), Nam Joo Hyuk (a genius developer who is so sensitive and socially awkward that it makes you frustrated, but makes you fight for him). This show depicts start ups realistically, including Hackathons, and how companies can be acquired, or grown independently, etc that teaches you a little about the importance of having different roles in a business, and recognizing one's strengths and weaknesses, and never giving up your dreams by taking risks.

Fantasy / Thriller:

  1. School Nurse Files: If you cannot get enough of Nam Joo Hyuk from Start up, this show is worth checking out, which is unique on its own, a fantasy/comedy mini series which reminds you of stranger things and its completely eclectic and amusing to watch.
  2. Kingdom: SO GOOD, best zombie thriller I have seen this year, surpasses expectations, as it is very scary, and fits in historical genre perfectly.

Shows I watched, but wouldn't recommend: Crash Landing on You, It's Okay not to be Okay (a big oof)
