Midnight Diner
"Midnight Diner" is highly recommended and praised for its storytelling and character development. While not a reality show in the traditional sense, it offers a slice-of-life experience that captures the essence of Tokyo nightlife through the interactions of its patrons at a late-night diner [5:1].
Terrace House
Though not explicitly mentioned in the discussions, "Terrace House" is one of the most well-known Japanese reality shows available on Netflix. It provides an intimate look into the lives of six strangers living together under one roof, focusing on their interactions and personal growth.
Japanese Variety Shows
While not all are available on Netflix, Japanese variety shows like "Ningen Kansatsu Monitoring" and "Tetsuko no Heya" provide a unique blend of humor and cultural insights. These shows often feature celebrity guests and explore various social experiments or interviews [4:1].
Documentary-Style Shows
For those interested in documentary-style content, NHK's "72 Hours" and TV Tokyo's "You wa Nani Shi ni Nippon e?" offer fascinating glimpses into different aspects of Japanese life and culture. These programs are more focused on real-life stories and experiences [4:4].
Other Recommendations
While not strictly reality shows, several J-dramas like "First Love," "Why Didn't I Tell You A Million Times," and "Full-Time Wife Escapist" have been recommended for their engaging narratives and cultural portrayal. They provide a mix of romance and drama that can appeal to fans of reality-based storytelling [3:2].
I am loving Beach boys on Netflix! Such a chill show ! Am on episode 8 and sad that there is 4 episodes left. I have tried multiple popular kdramas and for some reason I can't stand them like jdrama.
I have been to japan 3 times over last 2 years and it's one of few countries that feels a window stepping into past and into future. This show has tons of heart and feels like perfect window into remembering what it feels like to be a kid again, silly, happy and curious to all things around. Almost 30 years late, but thank you Beach boys!
What other jdramas do you recommend?
Prepare the tissues as the tears will flow once you get thru the last four episodes.
I highly recommend Dr. Coto’s Clinic, which has a similar small town/beachside setting (albeit more dramatic than comedic). Also recommend After School Doctor, even though it doesn’t have the beach setting. Both shows are amazing and have tons of heart like Beach Boys.
I am not ready for it to end :( alot of jdramas make me feel i wish I was in that tv setting and have friends like that !
I don't want to spoil anymore, but funny enough, one of the major themes behind Beach Boys is all about that feeling of not wanting things to end, lol.
This show truly defied all of my expectations and is an all-time great for me.
Any work from Kimura Takuya - da GOAT of J-drama that defined its golden age. The recent retrospective package deal with Netflix is heaven-send.
Definitely Long Vacation and Love Generation, if you want some chill vibe of the 1990s.
Very underrated, but I love Over Time and Love Revolution too. All dramas from 1990s to early 2000s.
For something more recent and equally chill, A Girl and Three Sweethearts.
Where ( to watch) are some of these ? I have Netflix, just subscribed to Viki.
Long Vacation cannot be found anywhere legally unfortunately, you would have to get creative unless you speak Japanese. I watched it recently and it’s one of my favorite shows. I loved it so much I bought the whole 4CD soundtrack.
Though if you wanna know how I watched it I can DM you!
I’m not very sure as I watched these many years ago.
Hopefully someone reading this will know and be able to advise. I would love to rewatch them if there is an available online platform.
yay! Love Revolution is on Viki.
Beach Boys is therapy for me, one of the all time greats.
Suteki Na Sen Taxi (2014) on dailymotion stars Yutaka Takenouchi
Old Rookie (2022) on Netflix stars Takashi Sorimachi
There's supposed to be a Beach Boys Special (1998) but I haven't found where to watch it. If someone has a lead pls share it, thanks!
So any shows on Netflix I can watch that's comedy related? I'm going on a flight to Hawaii and I need so.ething to watch on the way there and back
Way of the House Husband
Aggretsuko
Saiki K
Scissor Seven
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K (S1) and Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun
Season 1 isn’t on Netflix
Hmm, weird. It is for me (US)
Both of these are brilliant!
Hi Score Girl
Aggretsuko
How about crying on the plane by watching violet evergarden + its movie instead
Toradora
Hello!
I’m in the UK and absolutely love K-dramas, so I’m looking for recommendations for me to help venture into J-dramas!
I’d love anything with romance, cute and/or steamy!
I have access to Netflix, Viki, Prime and Disney+.
Please throw some recommendations to start on my J-drama journey.
Thanks!
I've watched mostly k dramas the last few years and I've recently begun watching Japanese dramas on Netflix and viki. Here are some recs from me
Netflix:
First Love
Why didn't I Tell you a million times
Full time wife Escapist
Light of my Lion
Quartet
Viki:
Hold my hand at twilight
Silent
What comes after love (this is a story about a Korean woman who moves to Japan and falls in love with a japanese man)
Why I dress up for Love
Where does the Sea Begin?
Prime:
Marry my Husband (it's airing currently) similar storyline to the Korean one, but is different at the same time. It's more realistic and the leads are lovely.
Yes to Marry my husband, so far. If I finished this, I must go back to my DNF kdrama version, coz am sort of a completist.
Why I Dress Up for Love is also on Netflix (asia)
My fave romances is
AO Haru Ride - on viki which is more high school first love romance - kdrama wise id reccomend it if you liked the "school ___" series
My Undead Yokai Girlfriend - which is on Amazon prime and a supernatural romance comedy i thought was pretty fun to watch - kdrama wise id reccomend if you like things like oh my ghostesss, mystic pop-up bar or to my star (which also has a jdrama remakes lmao)
1122 for a Happy Marriage on prime is a romance but also an nuanced affiar drama that's done really well with good acting.
calm sea and beautiful days - on viki which is a which is a historical
I wanna punch that scumbag - on viki which was more a sports romance - id reccomend if you like fight my way or Wieghtlifting fiary
Shows that aren't EXACTLY a romance but have such good chemistry you feel like they are:
Trillion Game - avaliable anywhere and very fun. A good starter for what most jdramas are
usotoki rhetoric - on viki id recommend if you like Chicago typewriter
Yes to 1122
I’m not a romance fan but First Love on Netflix has good reviews.
Yes. A circuitous way back to love.
I'd suggest something not mentioned by others yet and that I've enjoyed immensely:
Osaan's Love
Kekkon Dekinai Otoko
Long Vacation
Good Luck
Here’s a list to get you started:
Jdrama/kdrama crossovers
Eye Love You rom-com with Chae Jong Hyeop (Castaway Diva, Nevertheless, Serendipity’s Embrace) as the male lead (Viki, Netflix)
What Comes After Love romantic drama with Lee Se Young (The Red Sleeve, Motel California, The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract) as the female lead (technically this is a kdrama but 1/2 of it takes place in Japan and is in Japanese and stars a well known Japanese actor) (Viki)
Hatsukoi DOGS rom-com with Na In Woo (Marry My Husband, Motel California) as one of the leads (currently airing on Viki)
Same story told in both kdrama and jdrama format
Suspicious Partner rom-com/drama, kdrama has the same name in English (currently airing on Viki)
Marry My Husband: Japan romantic drama, kdrama has the same name in English (currently airing on Prime)
Nevertheless: The Shapes of Love romantic drama, kdrama has the same name in English (Netflix)
Hana Yori Dango rom-com/drama, kdrama is Boys Over Flowers in English (Viki)
Only Just Married romantic drama, this shares a lot of similarities to Because this is My First Life (Viki)
Full Time Wife Escapist rom-com/drama, also shares a lot of similarities to Because this is My First Life (Viki, Netflix)
Rom-Com’s
In House Marriage Honey (not sure where this is airing anymore, it was recently removed from Viki in the USA but this is one of the better rom-com’s if you can find it!)
Aoshima Kun is a Bully (Viki)
Kissing the Ring Finger (Viki)
Good Luck (Netflix)
Turn to Me Mukai Kun (Netflix) - told from the male leads point of view
An Incurable Case of Love (Netflix, Viki)
A Girl and Three Sweethearts (Prime) - it’s less on the comedy than the others but I wanted to recommend a Yamazaki Kento drama since he’s a favorite actor of mine
Quirky Love Stories (something jdramas excel at)
Sweat and Soap (Viki), rom-com, this one is a bit spicy compared to kdramas
Kimi Wa Petto (Viki) romance/drama/comedy
Ripe for the Picking (Netflix) romantic drama, spicier compared to kdramas
1122 Ii Fuufu (Prime)
Epic or Heartbreaking Love Stories
First Love Hatsukoi (Netflix) have tissues
Beautiful Life (Netflix) you’ll need more tissues than you can imagine
Chigakusei Nikki (Netflix, Viki) the relationship (teacher/student) is uncomfortable but not taboo in Japan
Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi (can’t find this on a legal streaming site) romance/drama/thriller - this is the original of the kdrama The Smile Has Left Your Eyes. The kdrama was “softened”, the jdrama is much darker
Stories with Some Spice generally speaking jdramas are spicier than kdramas in that they don’t shy away from the leads having sex so many of the dramas recommended above will show spicier scenes more openly compared to the average kdrama. The ones below are a bit spicier than the average jdrama:
Coffee and Vanilla (Viki), rom-com (?), warning, male lead is a toxic red flag
Business Marriage (Viki) rom-com
Sacchan Boku Wa (Netflix) drama, romance; the ending is … unsettling
Love and Fortune (Netflix) romance, drama; the relationship (30 year old woman, 16 year old boy) is very uncomfortable but it is not taboo in Japanese culture. This makes Chugakusei Nikki appear incredibly tame.
Kakafukaka (Viki) warning there is a sex scene >!that from a non Japanese viewer’s perspective shows a non-consensual sex!<
Liar (Viki) romance, drama
Rinko-San wa Shite Mitai (Viki) rom-com(?)
The Night I Became an Animal (Viki) anthology of romance/drama
Edited for formatting and clarity
Yes to Kakafukaka & Rinko wants to try
Kakafukaka is a total nonsense. Even after all that sexy stuff he claimed he could only do with her, he refused to tell her he loves her or wants to be a couple with her. And what did she say? "Oh, it's okay. That's who he is, and I stay with him."
I'm sorry I don't know which Japan subreddit that right for this question. I want to know if there are good Japanese tv shows such as 2 days 1 night (South Korea) and Late-night talk show. Also if there are good comedy tv shows and National Geographic Japanese version in Japan
examples of some more documentary style shows

https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/youhananishini/
Thank you so much. Please tell me more, if you have more.
And where can I watch them? Is it possible to find them on online or website like kshow123?
there are no good ways of watching that I know of. this subreddit frowns upon linking to legally questionable content, but if you go to /r/JTV there are some links in the sidebar to blogs that regularly put up links to recently aired shows that have been uploaded.
some more I can think of

Fans around the world are tuning in to the news of a bigger and badder Season 2, excited at the return of a show that coined a new genre of “K-zombie entertainment.”
Notes:
I was hoping for sirens season 2
is it really good, i got off like straight episode one seeing actually nothing visual worthy. Sorry for being a Visual worthy slave..
I liked it, but the winner was so obvious since the 1st episode. Also doesn't help that it's always the strong teams ganging up on the weak.
I could have sworn I saw ‘another season coming’ on Netflix for this a few weeks ago. I really hope it does come back for another season as I really enjoyed it and thought it could definitely be built upon and made even bigger / better.
I was watching the "Coming in 2024" trailer yesterday and I think I saw Kim Donghyun in the Physical 100 section. (unless I was mistaken but it looks like him)
Didn't really like zombieverse s1, but curious enough to see s2. Anything from JJY seems good.
zombieverse got 2nd season but no news for siren or tdp?
It's been a blast seeing how eager Netflix to pour their money to the South Korea entertainment shows.
Cant wait to see:
I've previously watched love wagon, rea(l)ove and terrace house, I was wondering about similar shows! preferably also from Japan, as I'm trying to learn the language and need actual conversation examples (I really enjoyed the TH Hawaii season cause they spoke japanglish, if any other show mixes japanese+English or Spanish it would be GREAT) 😊🌸
Old Enough?
God I love this show! It's so wholesome!
You may like this then https://www.netflix.com/title/81498937
I haven’t watched it myself, but from what I’ve heard love is blind Japan is really good
I’m learning Japanese and Korean, and watching different shows has actually helped the process along considerably, but I want to watch actually good shows whilst I’m doing it!
I’ve watched [All of us are Dead] and I’m watching [Alice in Borderland] at the moment.
Thanks for the help!
Edit: no anime please, I like anime a lot and have pretty much already watched all the good ones on Netflix, I want to get into live-action more :)
Business Proposal if you're into RomCom.
Korean: Squid Game, Sweet Home, Signal, Tunnel, Chicago Typewriter, Stranger.
Midnight diner. Gourmet samurai.
Both these shows are just amazing but midnight diner maybe one of the best shows ever made.
Kingdom
I agree on this one. Awesome show
Great show
Korean:
Extracurricular
Move to Heaven
The Guest
Goedam
Navillera
Hyena
Signal
Japanese:
Erased
Scams
There's also some good Taiwanese and Thai series I could recommend if you'd like.
Erased is so so good!
Bro, there's only 2 shows on this list lmao
I can't believe how popular the anime is despite its average animation.
I think how "vintage" the story feels. Most people grew up with shonen that are "simple" to understand, have good fights and many gags. Sakamoto days early arc are just that. I know MANY people who never watched anime, watche saka days ep 1 and got hooked and now they watch it every week. I said this before but suzuki gags are very reminiscent of tom and jerry, he uses a more "western" style comedy, because his comedy comes in the form of action, think of rush hour. So western people are more likely to be engaged with every part of an episode instead of the odd japanese comedy that fly on most westerner's head or gets lost in translation.
It being on Netflix is definitely helping with exposure to non-anime/casual audiences.
Hah! So it was not my feeling.
When I was watching the first epi all I could think was "hah, reminds me of cartoons or anime from the mid 90's"
I see some HK influences, too, especially with Sakamoto’s way of fighting.
People maybe are finding out you don't need god teir animation to have a good anime
Bro ur hillarious u make it a point to comment the animation on every positive post💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
wait is this real???? people are actually watching it globally? this is so awesome!!
Even the anime is not okay, it s fine as long as it gives "better publicity" to the manga itself and make suzuki gets the bag.
We do whatever it takes to make Sakadays #1 trending, in the name of the order
Apart from squid games I'm sure most people don't even know the other shows not something to really brag about
I'm looking for a good Japanese show or movie on Netflix, but not an anime or a thriller/psychological one (for instance, not Alice in Borderland, Erased...)
I'm thinking more about a movie/series that focuses on romance, family relationships, friendships...
Here are some Japanese shows and movies I enjoyed watching:
-Midnight Diner
-What did you eat yerterday?
-Shoplifters
-Loved like a flower bouquet
Do you have any recommendations? Thank you :)
Samurai Gourmet, about a shy old man who’s just retired and isn’t sure what to do with his life, so he goes out to different restaurants (which tie in for whatever mini adventure he goes on that day), and tries his best to think how a samurai would act when things become difficult. It’s a very gentle and simple show, no real conflict, just sweet.
Similar vein, Midnight Diner (on Netflix) is one of the most calming, meditative and cosy shows my wife and I ever watched.
Yep. It's under two names at Netflix because one was the original TV run. It's lofi TV.
Midnight Asia is pretty fun too as a documentary of characters in Asian nightlifes.
There's also Naked Director which feels like Yakuza 0 the movie.
Different, but Samurai Cat. A down on his luck samurai is asked to kill a cat that has stolen the heart of a local business man. Instead, the samurai adopts it.
Gentle and funny the first season, a bit odd in the second.
If you like Midnight Diner, you'll probably enjoy Samurai Gourmet.
Terrace House is reality, and their version of the Real World, but there is little to no drama. It is more just watching people go about their daily lives. They stay a while, then move out and new people move in. It is very casual and mostly very kind and just sort of peaceful to watch.
Opening New Doors and the Hawaii seasons were pretty juicy
I love the "drama" that occurs is in the most polite ways possible and with them still wishing the best for each other even if they disagree.
Isn't that a thriller though?
I didn't consider it a thriller, just a mystery police detective series where they explore family relationships and societal relationships. Also had romantic interests. I thought it was too art-house to be considered a thriller but maybe others have differing views on what is considered a thriller.
Departures. Musician to Mortician is the simple take, but a touching film
This is one of my fav movies of all time but I just went to check on my Netflix and can’t find the title. I’m in the US.
Top Japanese reality shows on Netflix
Here are some top Japanese reality shows currently available on Netflix:
Terrace House:
Naked and Afraid of Love:
The Great Japanese Sweets Challenge:
The Circle Japan:
Old Enough! (Hajimete no Otsukai):
Recommendation: If you're new to Japanese reality shows, start with Terrace House for its unique format and engaging interactions. It’s a great introduction to Japanese culture and social dynamics, and it has a dedicated fan base for a reason!
