Get the MacBook Pro with an „M“ processor. They work really efficiently. Even working without plugged in is no problem. And the display ist really nice. It a perfect machine for creative work.

But if you plan to game or use software like cad. Then it’s not your machine, keep that in mind.

M4 Pro MacBook Pro. With a lot of RAM.

Get a MacBook Pro. Or, if it'll stay at your desk, and money isn't too big a deal, get a Mac Studio.

MacBook Pro with an M1 or higher is going to be a good choice. those laptops are purpose-built for creative software and sport the highest battery life currently available along with other ARM platform laptops.

otherwise get an laptop with an 8gb VRAM gpu, preferably 32gb of RAM or higher, however much storage you want depending on if you use cloud services, and probably a tier 7 processor from Intel or AMD (or tier 9). as for the screen, 60hz is fine as most of the time the footage you’re working with will be output at 60fps or less. however most laptops of this tier are starting to include 90hz or 120hz displays. as for LCD versus OLED, I typically recommend LCD for extended work sessions due to the slight risk of burn-in with OLED screens, however if the work you do is color-sensitive, then an OLED will have the best picture available.

once again, if you go with a MacBook Pro, they use a 120hz VRR Mini-LED (Retina) display that looks almost on-par with OLED screens, preventing the risk of burn-in, which is another reason MacBooks are good for creative software.

MacBooks are gonna be up in the top but if your not into apple Asus and lenovo, make good stuff. Just make sure it doesn't have integrated graphics. A separate graphics card makes all the difference.

Macbook is nicer to work with, not that loud fan npise, nicer batterylife to work on the couch. I came from Windows to Mac for editing, and don't regret it. A few things in after effects are a bit tideus with laptop or mac both. I have lumix s5iix and it can directly record prores which is super to edit in premiere on my mac.

Small repair shop here. Something like a Dell precision with a nvida 6gb Quatro, or a Lenovo thinkpad with the same card. At least an i7!2’d 32gb ram 1TB ssd. You will most likely have to order custom If both manufacturers don’t have similar specs. Roughly $1500-2500 depending on specs.

Understand with the criteria you quoted:

Make sure you understand if you are using it for gaming you probably need to keep it plugged in. No gaming laptop I know of gets decent fps or battery life when gaming without the power plugged in.

I've owned many gaming laptops:

Current typing this on an i-9 4070.

Battery life without gaming or using the 4070 GPU, about 5 or 6 hours.

Battery life while gaming, not plugged in, about an hour at reduced FPS.

In your price range you have options. I have owned several Asus and have had good luck with them. I am not affiliated with them and do not get compensation for recommending them or people buying them.

Again, I'm not an affiliate and don't get paid by Asus or Best Buy. I currently own a M16 Zephyrus RoG 4070 I've had for about 2-3 years. I also own a RoG Strix 5080 I got about 1 month ago. Both are rock solid. Some people don't like Asus, some do. I like them and it seems to fit your price. A 4070 is better than a 4060 at the same price IMHO.

Just get a desktop. Laptops are NOT good gaming machines no matter how much unicorn vomit they have.

I use my Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 8th Gen which has a 13900hx and an RTX 4090, with 32GB RAM with DaVinci Resolve. I recommend the higher end machines from all the companies for editing if you need to portability, but they are quite expensive.

If it starts to skip/lag I change it to smart rendering for my playback and it will pre-render the video for playback and not lag any more, but the downside is it does generate large files for this and takes up storage space, but I just delete them after I'm finished editing the video.

Lenovo has newer laptops out now, and I would imagine the newer CPUs and GPUs at the same level would be better, and you can always upgrade them to have more RAM.

a laptop is not going to be the best option, but if it's your only option I would go with an nvidia card if video editing is your priority, look around see what your budget is and see what laptops have a card that fits your needs. I say nvidia over amd as it has the better encoder and seems to do better with their studio drivers for editing. then for the cpu, if your going for a more midrange computer an intel or amd cpu is fine, something like a ryzen 5 7700x or i7-whatever the higher i7 numbers are. but if your going for top of the line cpu go for amd ryzen 9 9800x3d or whatever it is. Amd is much better then intel for top of the line cpus right now, but the older intels were generally the same or a little better (imo) then amd cpus. 32 gigs of ram is probably a requirment for you, and then 2tb of storage

Not a laptop but if video editing and creativity is what you're aiming for, mac mini can be a good option. It doesn't have a screen so you'll have to buy separate monitor but it can be a good option. It's lightweight and portable as well so if it matches your needs then definitely go for it. Price is gonna be a big factor but I've seen older M variants of macbook air go head to head with some high end windows laptops in terms of creativity. So do consider it.

Doing it on a laptop will be expensive, as you want as much RAM and more importantly VRAM as you can cram into the machine.

For 4k video processing you probably want a minimum of 12gb VRAM.

i recommend using ur laptop to watch tutorials on Proxy Workflow before you go insane.

I'm a recent convert from Windows to Mac. I've tried quite a few higher end PC laptops and they all became unusable after a frustrating short period of time. Macs are the way to go for laptop video editing. Super smooth, and the build quality and longevity is on a completely different level.

I use an M4 MBP with 32gb memory and 1tb drive. That should fit within your budget and it works well for me doing 4k 10bit, effects and some light animation.

Whichever 14-inch or 16-inch Apple Silicon based MacBook Pro that you can find that’s within your budget: new current generation or prior generation, refurbished current or prior generation, used if in good condition.

If you happen to have a Costco membership, the selection is limited but the price is very good and you have 90 days to return it if for whatever reason it isn’t right for you.

I work on Mac and have never looked back. Especially with Apple Silicone. I would check out which mac with apple silicone is in your budget if you’re open to Mac. I run a production company producing videos for clients and we have several M1 Macs for simple office work and light editing. If I need to do heavier stuff I will just use proxies too. So it works great and the Macs we have still rock after 4 years of use. Now you have much stronger chips than the M1 as well. Hope that helps!

If you get some Windows build, just be sure it has stuff like an iGPU for 264 ect decoding. For example, all I could get years ago was this i7 KF chip. The K means it can be overclocked, great, but the F means it has no integrated graphics. I didn't think it would matter with a bangin' 3080, but apparently iGPU chips can decode video formats on the fly and so it's WAY smoother for editing... No biggie, I just make proxies, but I am waiting on my new computer that should be way better.

Get a used Macbook with at least an M1 from a reputable dealer. It’ll be good to you.

The Strix G16 I have with a 4070 works well for video editing. Not sure about photo editing.
