What Redditors are Saying

Best Locations for Resources in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Titanium: Crash Site
  • Copper: Grand Reef
  • Quartz: Dunes
  • Lead: Crag Field
  • Salt: Grassy Plateaus
  • Lithium: Bulb Zone
  • Silver: Mountains
  • Gold: Underwater Islands
  • Uraninite: Lost River [1]

Basic Resource Locations

For basic resources, players have identified several optimal locations. Titanium can be found abundantly at the Crash Site, while Copper is best gathered in the Grand Reef [1]. Quartz deposits are plentiful in the Dunes, and Lead can be sourced from the Crag Field [1]. The Grassy Plateaus are a reliable source for Salt, and Lithium is abundant in the Bulb Zone [1]. Silver is primarily located in the Mountains, and Gold is found extensively around the Underwater Islands [1], [1:1].

Late Game Resource Locations

As you progress in the game, certain resources become essential for advancing deeper into the ocean. Uraninite is best collected from the Lost River [1]. Players also recommend exploring Sea Treader's Path for Gold, Lithium, and Diamonds due to its rich deposits [1:3].

Building Bases for Resource Gathering

Choosing strategic base locations can significantly enhance resource gathering efficiency. Sparse Reef and Mushroom Forest are noted for their safety and resource richness [2:2]. For deeper exploration, some players prefer using the Cyclops as a mobile base, while others build permanent bases in resource-rich areas like the Lost River [3:1], [3:2]. It's suggested to focus on building bases near multiple biomes for easy access to diverse resources [4:1].

Creative Solutions and Tools

Players have devised creative solutions to keep track of resource locations. One user created a spreadsheet detailing large resource deposits and outcrops, which can be displayed in-game using picture frames [5:1]. This visual aid helps players navigate and plan their resource collection efficiently [5:3].

These insights should help players optimize their resource gathering strategies and base-building decisions in Subnautica.

ORIGINAL POST

I am putting together a simple table with the best location for a quick resource grab when needed. This is a work in progress. Updates are welcome.

Tried to determine the single best location based on these criteria:

  • closest location to safe shallows
  • greatest number of large deposits (when available)

Basic resources

  • titanium: crash site
  • copper: grand reef
  • quartz: dunes
  • lead: crag field
  • salt: grassy plateaus
  • lithium: bulb zone
  • silver: mountains
  • gold: underwater islands

Late game locations

  • uraninite: >! lost river!<
  • nickel: >!lost river (green side) !<
  • ruby: >!lost river (green side) !<
  • cyanide: >!lava zone !<

Wouldn't >! sea treader's path!< be best for gold, lithium and diamonds?

1 upvotes on reddit
Suspicious-Basil-444 · OP · 26 days ago

Yes and no. It’s good for small amounts. When you need quantity such as a full inventory it’s not good because you are going to farm 3x more and throwing away 2/3 of what you collect. That’s why I want to stick with large deposits instead of outcrops.

Underwater Islands has tons of large gold deposits all around it

Should I build a new base for more resources?

Posted by Kaizukoh · in r/subnautica · 7 days ago

Hey friends,

first time playing the game on my own, my roommate in college played it a couple of years ago and I bought it on sale and after avoiding it for a couple of month, I am now having the time of my life in this submarine adventure! :D
I know how the story unfolds and not afraid of getting spoiled here. So please don't hold back.

After the start I am now in the mid-game I would say (Cyclops ready for 1.300m and prawn suit for 900m ready, just visited the lost river and I am about to enter the research facility there)

After discovering the two vehicles I was mining like a maniac and now got a good amount of resources ready to go (12 locker titan 8 locker of gold, silver and copper each and so on)

As I now went to the lost river I found even more ores and stuff. Should I get a base and mine there as well? (my current base is in the north western part of the mushroom forest at around 200m) Or am I well equipped for everything to come?

Some build bases in the Lost River, some use cyclops as a mobile base. Both gameplay styles work. Choose what you enjoy more. You don't need to hoard tons of resources unless you really want to build a big deep base with all the luxuries just for the fun of it. You will need kyanite, sulphur, and nickel to progress in the game, but you don't need multiple cabinets full. You need enough to build better depth modules though, because 900m crush depth isn't going to cut it. Even the Cove Tree in the Lost River is skirting the max depth of your current prawn. Have fun finding the kyanite... It's oppressive down there.

6 upvotes on reddit
Kaizukoh · OP · 7 days ago

Thanks for the advice! I was in the lost river and hoped to find kyanite there but I haven't gotten my hand on it so far. Found some crystilized Sulfur and a lot of nickel.

tbh my last base isn't even completely finished so far and I started the mining for more quarz in the first place. I will consider building a base there but until then I might use the cyclops as a mobile one.

Where to find kyanite: >!you'll need to go deeper than the Lost River. Always go deeper...!<

2 upvotes on reddit
CaptainJackass123 · 7 days ago

Your nearly ready to go deeper

You need to get that prawn depth upgraded.

Kyanite will do it. Descend lower than the lost river.

The only “base” you need in the lost river is a mop pool so you can access upgrades for the prawn. The nicer upgrades are a mod station on my cyclops.

My moon pool also has a room with 4 water filters to make me the good +50 water. I use the thermal vents as power for those two rooms.

Everything else is on the cyclops.

3 upvotes on reddit
Kaizukoh · OP · 7 days ago

Alright! Thank you very much!

I have a feeling like going deeper is the name of the game :D.

Then I will need to find the parts for the prawn upgrade but I am sure my greed will lead me places! ^^

2 upvotes on reddit
NervousStrength2431 · 7 days ago

As you go deeper there will be more resources that you need so a base is viable, but I prefer just going out in the Cyclops with the prawn suit and filling the lockers on it with resources I find there.

Also you got ALOT of resources you probably won't need more of what you got lol

You can make the Cyclops into a mobile base. But I prefer to make one bigger base in the shallows since it's the middle of the map. And a few small FOBs around the place.

2 upvotes on reddit
Twistfaria · 7 days ago

It also very much depend on how you play and if you want to do all that the game has to offer. I find it fun to make large bases and hatch all the eggs but not everyone does.

2 upvotes on reddit
plinthpeak · 7 days ago

I fill the cyclops with things you can only make near the surface. Stuff like stalker teeth, table coral, polymers from the kelp (lubricant too), and fibre. Mushrooms for batteries (though those can be grown). Everything else can be mined below.

Kaizukoh · OP · 7 days ago

This was a really helpful advice! I instantely farmed corals for crafting things and for more water supplies if needed!

Extra bases are a good place to shop for supplies, charge power cells, etc. Especially if they're deep enough for Cyclops parking.

Without going into details on plot and keep it spoiler free can say:

a) best locations are where you can easily reach 3-4 different bomes with relative ease, so scout a lot and find a spot that also has a nice view (you will be seeing it a lot)

b) have plenty of space to "grow", your initial base may change a lot as you progress....there is plenty of stuff that is additive to your current base and its interesting to try it out and expand.

c) give it purpose, by having a clear idea of what you want out of your base...a place to sleep, to re-supply, or manufacture, or sit and relax. Function guides design.

Quality of Life Hack! (Zone name spoilers)

Posted by SquidFetus · in r/subnautica · 5 months ago

I've played through Subnautica so many times now that I mainly play it for large creative projects. Often this means I find myself looking up where to find a large resource node for a specific material, safe in the knowledge that no spoilers await me and that I've legitimately stumbled my way through the game before.

It's a little immersion breaking and inconvenient, so I made a handy spreadsheet with some basic info on where to find large resource deposits / outcrops and converted it into an image that I could set in a picture frame object. Now before I go on a resource trip, I just check this in-game screen in my base to plan my trip!

In Below Zero, the first time I played the game I also took a screenshot with the PDA open to the map data you find, and put that inside a picture frame in my base as well. Instant map! I think the picture frame is one of my favourite things to use in the game.

If you'd like this image for your own game, I uploaded it here. This will probably only work for the PC version of the game, where you can directly implant images into the game's screenshots folder. This is usually found within the C:\ProgramData\Unknown Worlds\Subnautica\ directory. I'm not sure which console versions are able to do this, if any.

Any other nice quality of life hacks you'd like to add?

SquidFetus · OP · 5 months ago

Hi there! Sorry if I made it a bit hard to digest.

If you want to find a particular resource, look for it along the top row. For example, let’s look at magnetite.

You’ll notice the leftmost column corresponds to names of biomes in Subnautica. If you go down from “magnetite”, all the cells that are coloured pale yellow tell you which biomes you can find large mineral deposits in (you need a drill arm on a Prawn suit for those) and the ones that are lilac coloured show you where you can find outcrops that can be collected by hand.

In our magnetite example, looking underneath it we can see that there’s only a single pale yellow cell in that column, in the spot that lines up with the row named Jellyshroom Caves. This tells us that the only place you can find a large resource deposit of magnetite is in the Jellyshroom Caves. If you have a Prawn suit with a drill arm and are looking to mine out a large number of that resource then this is the part you might focus on. The other areas that have purple next to them are where you would find an outcrop of magnetite which is mainly useful for when you don’t have the Prawn suit or drill arm yet.

Some of them have “Caves Only” written on them too, that’s just to show that you need to be in the “underground” area of that biome to find the resource listed.

Some resources come from outcrops that don’t look like them or share their name. The magnetite in our example just looks like magnetite, but copper for example comes from limestone outcrops. That’s why the outcrop names are listed as well, just in case you forget what to look for.

If a cell is black, then you can’t find that resource in that area.

I hope that helps!

SquidFetus · OP · 5 months ago

I'm not sure it's possible. Does the Switch version of the game have its own internal screenshots that it chooses from, or can it choose from anything in your screenshot gallery? If you can choose any image from your gallery then I guess you could find a way to get this image in there. Not sure how that would work or if it is possible though, if I had to guess I'd say Nintendo has an in-house app that manages gallery importing.

First of all make a Seamoth depth module if you haven’t yet, then make a depth module MK2. For that you need magnetite which is found in abundance in the Jellyshroom caves (big glowing mushrooms), then if you want rubies, the first place off the top of my head would be the grand reef (go in the direction of the big cloud to the right of the Aurora)

Base locations

I think this is the correct flair? This is like my 5th ever run on subnautica, coming back every year or so and completely forgetting how to play it. I always try to build bases in new places so the game doesn't get boring (it rarely does anyways). Shame on me for using a map but I have a horrible memory. had these 3 spots in mind for a base. 1st is east of floating islands. I think it's quite a good location but the bonesharks are a nuisanceeeeee. 2th is a spot in the mushroom forest bordering with a few biomes on the north of the map (next to wreck 12). It's cool but a bit boring I guess? The third one is the cliff side of the blood kelp zone. Any tips or recommendations? Thank you, have a wonderful day! :3
