How to Find Silver Ore in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Look for sandstone outcrops in the Kelp Forest, Grassy Plateaus, and Red Grass areas.
  • Check Reefback Leviathans for barnacles that can yield silver.

Sandstone Outcrops

Silver ore is primarily found in sandstone outcrops. These outcrops are scattered throughout various biomes, including the Kelp Forest, Grassy Plateaus, and Red Grass areas [1:3][2:3][4:9]. Sandstone outcrops are distinguishable from limestone outcrops, which contain copper and titanium. The Kelp Forest is a particularly good area to search as it has numerous sandstone deposits on the ocean floor and around drop-offs [2:1].

Reefback Leviathans

Another source of silver is the barnacles found on the backs of Reefback Leviathans. These large creatures often have blue spots on their backs where you can "break barnacle" to obtain either copper or silver [4:2]. Be cautious of Tiger Plants that may also reside on Reefbacks, as they can cause damage [4:5].

Specific Locations

Some players have noted specific locations that are rich in silver deposits. The thermal vent area in the safe shallows is one such spot [2:2]. Additionally, the Creepvine Forest near the shipwreck contains sandstone chunks with silver, gold, and lead [4:4].

Subnautica: Below Zero

For those playing "Subnautica: Below Zero," silver can be found in the Arctic Kelp Caves and the Thermal Spires zone. These areas also contain gold and silver deposits, but beware of hostile creatures like bonesharks [5:1][5:2].

By focusing your search in these key areas and utilizing the resources available in each biome, you should be able to gather enough silver ore for your crafting needs in Subnautica.

Same way you get gold. It's just a little less common. I still wind up with tons of it.

Lol, I haven't noticed it. Probably it was drilled before. No naturally occurring rare metals in OG Subnautica, besides big deposits.

You can actually find silver on Reefbacks. Just look for the bright blue spots on its back (you will receive the prompt to 'break barnacle,' and you will either get copper or silver from it. Just be aware that some Reefbacks can also have Tiger Plants on their backs.

Woah nice, can’t you use a propulsion cannon to get rid of tiger plants?

3 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

I haven't tried a propulsion cannon, but you can try to knife it away. You'd take a bit of damage doing it, but it will get rid of the plant (it's not worth it to plant their seeds, the Tiger Plants will actually damage your base).

Red Grass areas have easy to find sandstone. You can also find it in some of the areas of the Kelp if you're near one of the deeper areas. You can find it on the high walls around a mushroom forest -- if you've found one of those you've ranged pretty far.

[below zero] Any good places to find silver?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/subnautica · 6 years ago

I need silver for basically everything. On my list is a seatruck (10), compass (2), rebreather (2), propulsion cannon (2) and a battery charger (2). I know for some reason silver, gold and lead all have their own nodes for some reason now and the only place I’ve ever seen silver is in the Twist Bridges Caves and I cant find anymore. Air is also a big problem. I have the big air tank.

Edit: Just after posting this I found another silver node in the Twisty Bridges Caves and it gave me titanium... looks like I need even more than I thought.

Edit2: I found a bunch in the Kelp caves, problem solved.

There is also a bunch in the thermal spires zone. If you do not mind bonesharks. I made a scanner in that area and it helped a ton, especially if you get some magnesium

Silver will spawn with cobalt or gold, iirc. If you find cobalt or gold, silver might be nearby, though you are also likely to find gold + iron or cobalt + iron + nickel + silicon

Just keep searching using a Large Grid Ore Detector, looking for "ore spots". You can find them under ice, like in the image, but also under normal terrain with white-yellowish spots

Got a drill? Plenty of silver hunks in the dunes and at the bottom of the underwater islands. I think there's also one not that far off the shore of spoiler mountain?

If not, start looking for reefbacks.

TitanfallHunter · OP · 3 years ago

No drill, just started my run two days ago and need one silver for habitat builder, I’ll have a nose around the under water islands. I’m too much of a pu*** to go and kill a leviathan so I’d rather just get it from the sandstone.

Cheers anyway

These other comments are great, but you can find sandstone in the coral caves in the safe shallows. Just be careful not to get lost and run out of air in the caves.

How to find silver ore in subnautica

Key Considerations for Finding Silver Ore in Subnautica:

  1. Biomes to Explore:

    • Grassy Plateaus: This biome is a good starting point for finding silver ore.
    • Kelp Forests: Look around the edges of these areas, as silver can often be found among the rocks.
    • Red Grass Fields: This biome also has a chance of yielding silver ore.
  2. Mining Techniques:

    • Use a Survival Knife or Laser Cutter to break apart outcrops where silver ore can be found.
    • Look for Shale Outcrops, which are the specific type of outcrop that yields silver ore.
  3. Depth Considerations:

    • Silver ore is typically found at depths between 50 to 200 meters. Make sure your equipment can handle these depths.
  4. Inventory Management:

    • Keep your inventory organized to ensure you have space for silver ore when you find it.
  5. Use of Upgrades:

    • Consider upgrading your Oxygen Tank and using a Seamoth or Prawn Suit for deeper exploration to increase your chances of finding silver ore.

Takeaway: Focus your exploration on the Grassy Plateaus and Kelp Forests, specifically looking for Shale Outcrops at the right depths. Equip yourself with the necessary tools and upgrades to maximize your mining efficiency. Happy exploring!
