What Redditors are Saying

Best Low-Sugar Protein Bars

TL;DR

  • Nugo Slim: Low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, 16-17g protein [2:1].
  • RXBAR: Minimal ingredients, no added sugar, 12g protein [1:5], [4:2].
  • Simply Protein: Under 5g sugar, good fiber content [5:1].
  • Aloha Bars: Tasty, organic, gluten-free, but contain some natural sweeteners [1:4].

Popular Recommendations

Several discussions highlight Nugo Slim as a top choice for those seeking low-sugar protein bars without artificial sweeteners. These bars offer around 3g of sugar and 16-17g of protein, making them a popular option among users who dislike the taste or aftertaste of stevia or other artificial sweeteners [2:1], [2:3]. RXBARs are also frequently recommended due to their minimal ingredient list and absence of added sugars, providing 12g of protein per bar [1:5], [4:2].

Taste and Ingredients

Taste is a significant factor when choosing protein bars. Aloha bars are noted for their excellent taste and organic ingredients, although they do contain natural sweeteners like monk fruit [1:4], [2:8]. Users have praised the flavor of Nugo Slim bars, particularly the Chocolate Mint variety, which some compare to thin mint cookies [2:5]. For those who prefer savory options, Righteous Felon Biltong is suggested as an alternative protein source [4:6].

Homemade and Alternative Options

For individuals who want complete control over ingredients, making homemade protein bars is a viable option. This allows for customization to avoid any unwanted sweeteners or flavors [1:11], [3:2]. Additionally, some users recommend snacking on whole foods like nuts, dates, or even tofu as protein-rich alternatives to traditional bars [2:6], [3:1].

Considerations for Specific Needs

If you're looking for protein bars with specific dietary needs, such as vegan options or those suitable for keto diets, it's important to check labels carefully. Some users have found that certain brands like Simply Protein offer low-sugar options with adequate fiber to maintain stable blood sugar levels [5:1]. However, personal taste preferences and dietary restrictions mean that trial and error might be necessary to find the perfect fit [5:8].

I'm surprised nobody has made a protein bar with low sugar and no artificial sweeteners. I can't be the only one in this boat.

Have you tried Nugo Slim bars? https://www.nugonutrition.com/collections/slim

Aloha bars are SO good. Best I’ve ever had. I get the variety pack from Thrive Market and keep them in the freezer. The mint is my fave. And I can’t stuff the cookie dough in my face fast enough. All flavors are super yum though and they’re organic and gluten free!

Love Aloha bars, but wish they had more protein.

My go to recently have been Kirkland bars from Costco. 21-22g in their bars for 170-190 calories. Hard to beat that ratio nowadays and have a good taste.

Just a head's up that these have three forms of sugar/sweeteners: cane sugar, tapioca syrup, and monk fruit.

Aloha bars have monk fruit as an ingredient... which is... a zero-calorie sweetener. Personally, I'd rather not deal with the zero-calorie sweeteners. The majority of "low sugar" or "sugar free" bars have monk fruit or stevia as a way to sweeten their products without increasing the sugar they're required to put on the label.

If you absolutely need a prepackaged bar: KIND has the least amount of sugar and doesn't use any zero-calorie or artificial sweeteners.

Otherwise, a better alternative would be steel-cut oatmeal w/ blueberries and chocolate chips, which is pretty good; not ultra processed, no sugar, cheaper and more nutritious.

Protein Bar Recommendations – Low Sugar, No Stevia, High Protein?

Posted by Illustrious_Stay9844 · in r/veganfitness · 3 months ago

Hey everyone, I’m looking for a good vegan protein bar available in the USA that meets the following:

Low total sugar and low added sugar High protein (12g or more per bar) NO stevia – it doesn’t work for me (taste/aftertaste issues) Low calories - if possible Would love any recommendations you've personally tried and liked. Taste matters too!

Specifically Nugo Slim (but NOT Raspberry or Brownie flavors-- those two flavors are not vegan, all other flavors are specially labeled vegan, last I checked). The regular Nugo are pretty high in sugar, but the Slim have no artificial sweeteners and only ~3g of sugar and decent protein, ~16-17g. These are the only ones I've found that don't have stevia, other artificial sweeteners, or sugar alcohols while still being moderately low in sugar and taste pretty good.

I don't even understand how these work- every other protein bar with such good macros has fake sweeteners or monkfruit/stevia. Does anyone know how the Nugo Slim are so sweet and tasty with only 3g sugar?

Is there a protein bar without sweetener?

Posted by dariansdad · in r/Protein · 5 months ago

I don't give a crap about calories. I work out and lead an active lifestyle but calories are irrelevant.

I like healthy stuff and I have eliminated wheat flour and cured meats from my diet as well as alcohol.

I got some protein bars for midday snacks but they all have some kind of sweetener whether it's sugar or whatever else. I don't mind a little fruit like fig or raisins but I don't like sweeteners especially artificial sweeteners.

Thoughts?

I’m not sure if they sell it where you live, but I really like blue dinosaur protein bars (whole minimal ingredients), otherwise I’ll just make homemade ones blending protein powder with nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter etc), dates, coconut, cacao powder, any dried fruit, nuts and seeds, oats, honey or stevia, cinnamon, cacao nibs etc — you can make any flavour combination you like :)

2 upvotes on reddit
dariansdad · OP · 5 months ago

The Blue Dinosaur look like the ticket. I don't want stevia or honey. I'm trying to get away from sweet. Everything is too fucking sweet.

1 upvotes on reddit
aquaxluv · 5 months ago

Well you can definitely make your own and not use any sweeteners, you can even ditch the dried fruits as well and use plain, unflavored, unsweetened protein powder too with the rest of the mix ins.

Protein bars are meant to be sweet as this is how they are designed to be, otherwise you can always snack on beef jerky, cheese slices, boiled eggs, plain yogurt (they come in pouches or small tubs) which are all savory options

Blue Dinosaur is a good choice tho, I got the peanut butter flavour the other day, they are not sickly sweet like typical bars and they don’t taste like chemicals at all. Their chocolate flavour is barely sweet, almost bitter if u ask me, wasn’t my favorite tho lol. Another good brand I know is true protein

1 upvotes on reddit
janevsthevolcano · 5 months ago

guys I desperately need you to gatekeep these PLEASE haha. The protein to calorie ratio is perfect (20g to 200cal), no sugar alchols, no fake sweeteners, taste amazing, taste like real food, limited list of all natural ingredients, won't do anything weird to your stomach, 2/3rds of my daily fibre. They're already instantly sold out every time they're on special nooooo. The only reason they fly under the radar is they're in the "healthy bars" section instead of the "protein bars".

1 upvotes on reddit
aquaxluv · 5 months ago

I agree!! They’re SOO GOOD. I remember there was a time where I stopped eating protein bars after that one time I ate a quest bar that made me severely bloated and felt weird, but I was on the go and needed something quick w protein in it, saw those on sale and I was reading the ingredients list expecting to see a laundry list of ingredients but to my surprise they were just a few simple whole food ingredients, it seemed to good to be true!! After buying it, I’m never going back to any other crappy bars

Also they tend to sell them in some pharmacies, whole foods supermarkets, and small brand grocery stores if you can’t find them in regular grocery stores :) otherwise purchasing a pack online is also great.

Another good protein bar is FibreBoost with around 140-150 cals & 21g protein and a whopping of 20g fibre!! However they’re really sweet, they aren’t my go to but I just have them during the days where I have low appetite and don’t eat any fibre rich foods lol

Well, what do you consider too much sugar? Are you looking for under 10g of sugar? Under 5g of sugar? 0 sugar? The Simply Protein bars I eat have 2 (check the different flavours) and the Kind bars I like have 5. Both of those have good amounts of fibre, as well, which I think helps them keep my blood sugar fairly stable.

Good question. I was eating the Kind breakfast bars, but they had way too much sweetness and sugar. Under 5g would be ideal. I'll try the Simply if they don't have artificial sweeteners in them. Thanks!

hands down - my 'athletic lunch' drink:

- raw rice protein powder - unflavored - nutribiotic brand

- oj - powdered

* better - fresh-squeezed

- red berry (w/ beet) vitamin powder - KaraMD Revive Reds

instructions

- mix w/ blender bottle (so the powder forms clumps - i.e. flavor packets)

Do they sell Nakd bars where you live? Cashews, dried fruit, and dates.

Most are vegan, but they've got versions with dairy too.

If you're on the hunt for a delicious high-protein, low-sugar bar, I totally get the struggle—so many options out there, but not all are created equal. I've tried a ton of them, and one that really hits the sweet spot for taste and nutrition is definitely worth considering. It packs a solid protein punch without going overboard on sugar, and the flavor is surprisingly good too, which is a bonus when you're munching on something to fuel your day. Seriously, they won’t make you feel like you’re sacrificing taste for health, which is clutch. You might wanna give this one a shot it's my go-to when I need a quick snack or post-workout fuel. Hope this helps you find exactly what you're looking for!

Dive Bar Nutrition has awesome bars. Macros somewhat similar to the Robert Irvine Fitcrunch, except these have WAAAYYY less ingredients.

The bummer is that they're online only, but they ALWAYS have deals/sales going on. Plus, shipping is usually only ~$5. They've got great flavor, no Protein aftertaste, and don't sit heavily in the stomach.

If you ever consider buying some, use my code Dante22 for 22% off! If you want a direct link, then: divebarnutrition.com/discount/Dante22

It's easy to snack on and doesn't have all the overly processed, sugary ingredients that you normally find in protein bars. I'm really sensitive to sugar and can never find a quick snack that's high in protein, but low in carbs/fat/sugar.

They also have a Wasabi flavor! I'm trying that one next.

I find them really hard to eat a lot of but i sprinkle roughly a quarter of the bag over some soy yoghurt and its a fairly okay snack. Or well the version we have here in Sweden (Dave &Jon's).

I combined them with coconut yogurt for my dinner yesterday! I'll probably add them to my salad tonight. I'm starting to realize how versatile these can actually be.

It's a lifesaver for us non-vegans who like protein-packed snacks too

What?! Thank you for this information. Did you find this on Amazon?

The 12-pack of pouches is usually a better price/lb - but when they’re out I get the tubs as well! With subscribe and save I usually get them for $16-19 a case!

even better was no oil. it’s so rare to find things like this that don’t have a load of pointless empty calories. these are DENSE on the protein while being super low calorie. I got in the habit of ruining that a little by mixing these with crushed up roasted chilli nori, which does add some oil but also some flavour and iodine.

still in their own these are my number 1 snack in the US :)

It's insane how many unnecessary ingredients are in everything. That's why this felt like a gem find.

Yeah I sometimes feel like the vegan junkfood trend has gone a little too far to be honest… all the healthy stuff has disappeared where I live and been replaced by ultraprocessed fake meat things and flavored protein bars and lentil chips and what have you. Always full of palm/coconut oil, sugar, sweeteners, etc.

I miss my roasted beans, bean burgers, fermented cashew cheese, etc… there used to be more good healthy stuff.

I can make these things myself of course, but the convenience of having them available ready-made was nice.

best low-sugar protein bars

Key Considerations for Low-Sugar Protein Bars:

  1. Sugar Content: Look for bars with less than 5 grams of sugar per serving. Check the ingredient list for added sugars or sugar alcohols.

  2. Protein Content: Aim for bars that provide at least 10-20 grams of protein to ensure they are effective for muscle recovery and satiety.

  3. Ingredients: Choose bars made with whole food ingredients, such as nuts, seeds, and natural protein sources (like whey or plant-based proteins) rather than artificial additives.

  4. Fiber Content: A good bar should have at least 3-5 grams of fiber to help with digestion and keep you feeling full.

  5. Taste and Texture: Since taste can vary widely, consider trying a few different brands or flavors to find one you enjoy.

Recommendations:

  • Quest Bars: These bars typically have around 1-2 grams of sugar and 20 grams of protein. They come in various flavors and are made with high-quality ingredients.

  • RXBAR: With about 3-5 grams of sugar, RXBARs are made from simple ingredients like egg whites, nuts, and dates. They provide around 12 grams of protein.

  • KIND Protein Bars: These bars contain about 5 grams of sugar and offer a good balance of protein (around 12 grams) and fiber, with a focus on whole ingredients.

  • No Cow Bars: These are plant-based, low-sugar bars with about 1 gram of sugar and 20 grams of protein, making them a great option for vegans.

Choosing bars that fit your dietary preferences and taste will help you stick to your nutrition goals while enjoying a convenient snack!
