TL;DR
Popular Brands and Flavors
Quest bars are frequently mentioned as a favorite due to their diverse flavors like maple waffle, raspberry white chocolate, and crispy chocolate peanut butter [1:2],
[2:1]. However, some users find them too chewy or gummy
[1:3]. RX bars are another popular choice, with flavors like dark chocolate sea salt and peanut butter chocolate being highlighted for their great taste
[1:4],
[5:5]. FitCrunch bars are praised for their taste and nutritional balance
[4:1].
Texture Preferences
Texture is an important consideration for many when choosing protein bars. Some users prefer bars with a crunchy texture, such as Trek Power Lotus Biscoff, which offers a high crunch factor [2:2]. Power Crunch bars are also recommended for their wafer-like texture and lack of artificial aftertaste
[4:2]. For those who enjoy a softer texture, Built puff bars with a marshmallow consistency are suggested
[4:5].
Nutritional Content
For those focused on hitting protein goals without excessive calories, Cliff Builders Bars offer 20 grams of protein with around 250-280 calories [3:6]. Pure Protein Galactic Brownie flavor is noted for its good macros
[4:1]. Some users recommend sampling various bars to find ones that meet personal taste and nutritional needs
[5:1].
Specialty Bars
GoMacro bars are appreciated for their real taste and filling nature [3:3],
[3:7]. Luna bars, particularly the chocolate/peanut butter flavor, are likened to candy and are favored by those who prioritize taste over strict dietary restrictions
[3:1],
[3:4].
In summary, selecting the best protein bar depends on individual preferences for taste, texture, and nutritional content. Trying out different brands and flavors can help identify the perfect snack bar for your needs.
I’m trying to find on-the-go snacks that fit in my purse and don’t require refrigeration. Thanks everyone for your opinions!
Sorry, I’m gonna be really basic here and go with Quest bars. The maple waffle and raspberry white chocolate ones are my favorite.
I can’t stand the gumminess of quest bars, it gets hard and really chewy for me. I highly recommend Fit Crunch bars
I love rx bars. Dark chocolate sea salt, peanut butter chocolate and maple something are the best.
The chocolate sea salt are my fav!!

Perfect bars are great and have a wonderful ingredient list. All the flavors are great. They do require refrigeration, but are good for up to one week out of the fridge.
I also want to suggest Simple Mills dark chocolate almond flour snack bars. They have an incredibly clean ingredient list but taste like a desert. They’re absolutely delicious and very filling. Highly recommend.
OK, so in your opinion, what are the best protein bars and why?
I’m really trying to hit my daily protein goals and I think having a couple good brands/flavors would be nice to have stashed in the car for when I’m on the go during the day.
I’m open to hearing any recommendations but just a few things to note:
-it would be great if the calorie count wasn’t wildly high compared to the grams of protein. -ideally they would taste great! -and I have a thing about texture. It’s nice when there is some crunch or variety, not just a wad of chewiness if that makes sense… 🙈
Depends on your location, not sure if these are sold everywhere but I like the Grenade Oreo ones and Trek Power Lotus Biscoff ones, even though I don’t particularly enjoy Biscoff in regular format. The Grenade bars are maybe 20% crunch, 80% wad. Trek I’ve only tried that one flavour but it’s 90%+ crunch!
Omg the Oreo Grenade ones look amazing! 🤩 Is the Trek the ‘Millionaire Shortbread’ one??
It’s the Trek Power Lotus Biscoff which is red but the Millionaire Shortbread ones look good too!
I am partial to the Quest brand. My favourite flavours are the crispy chocolate peanut butter, crispy blueberry cobbler, and the chocolate chip cookie dough.
All available on Amazon or at Walmart.
The blueberry cobbler looks amazing! You guys have such great recommendations my Amazon cart is full! 😅 It’s a good problem to have tho
Have you tried their strawberry ones too? I feel like I would like those as well. 😍
I’m scared to try them lmao. I actually have some sitting on top of my fridge but I’m afraid i won’t like it😭😭
i like barebells, macrowise i would disregard anything 20g of less bcs its usually not worthy the calories
Barbells
Kinda niche question I guess, but have you found any protein/snack bars that aren’t super low calorie, low carb, artificially sweetened, etc? I’d like something filling as well.
I’m trying to cook for myself more, but sometimes my breakfast/part of lunch is just going to be something convenient like a protein bar. I’m realizing though that a lot of the brands I used to think were great actually taste disgusting since I’m no longer dieting and I legit miss when I used to think Quest bars were delicious.
I like Luna bars, both the regular bars (like granola bars, kind of) and their protein bars (like the consistency of edible cookie dough). I also struggle a lot with breakfast options as I'm a chronic "runner-later" and I prioritize making the perfect iced coffee over fixing a meal in the rush of the morning, and I am incredibly picky with the way food tastes. I like nearly every flavor of Luna bars and find them relatively economical, too, which is a bonus. I've never personally been able to choke down a Quest, Cliff, or Kind bar even when I was dieting because they were so bland and dry, so that should show you how good I think Luna bars are lol
I love Luna bars. The texture is pretty good too. I love the chocolate coconut and chocolate cupcake flavors 😋
I just tried the Go Macro bars recently and I like them, they taste real.
I swear by GoMacro! Their everlasting joy one is my favorite if you like coconut.
I really like Huel, they have a great mix of protein, carbs and fats that are good for you, plus a lot of vitamins and minerals. And they taste good to boot.
Cliff Builders Bars! They're around 250-280 calories and have 20G of protein, so they're quite nutritionally dense. They're also delicious
I love the chocolate/peanut butter luna bars. They taste like candy to me.
I also like some flavors of GoMacro bars.
Edit: got the product name wrong
Hi. Looking for good protein bars that are not chalky to snack on or sub for a sweet treat on lighter calorie days? I tried quest, and only really like their crispy bars. Built is good here and there as well.. This is my barebells collection as I pick from these currently as they do tend to taste the best… Thanks!
I’m a big fan of Power Crunch bars. They’re the only protein bars I like because they’re not chalky (they actually have wafers on the inside like Nutty Buddy bars) and there’s no strong artificial sweetener aftertaste. My faves are peanut butter fudge, chocolate mint, and triple chocolate. 13g protein, 5g sugar, 215-220 cals.
There are cinnamon ones on Amazon and their official website, I highly recommend them. Delicious.
Ooh I’ll check those out! Thanks!
Nick's are awesome, straight up like a Snickers. The power crunch bars are great if you like wafers but they only have 12 grams of protein per bar. Sometimes I might not eat for a while and I splurge on a met Rx big 100 bar. Not the best ingredients but omg delicious
built puff bars r the GOATTT!! barebells r friking candy bars dude.. super high cal for no reason blah
If you like bouncy marshmallow texture, built puffs are my favorite. The coconut one is best but I also like chocolate and churro.
I love these !!
A few good ones here:
Thank you !!
i’m going on a week long hiking/camping trip and i’ve never been on one this long before. can someone reccomend protein bars/other “snacks” that are actually good for getting yourself back on your feet and ready for the climb? i usually bring nature valley bars but i think they are more sugar than anything.
I like Kind bars the best.
there's no real answer here.
to me. the best would be something you make yourself, where you control the ingredients, and can have some idea of the nutrition.
pre-made stuff. really depends on what you can tolerate. I know a lot of those work out protein bars to me are disgusting. like chewing chalky rubber.
to a certain extent. calories by weight is what you should consider. nutrition really doesn't matter. especially if it's like a couple days. nothing catastrophic is going to happen to your body in a short period of time if you're eating junk food vs the pinnacle of nutrition.
but what does tend to matter is the amt of weight on your back. sugar and fat tend to be the best calorie to weight ration foods. nuts. candy. fats.
I normally bring something that is either seeds or nuts. high fat. often times a good source of salt. maybe magnesium. straight up roasted pea nuts/salted peanuts. or like sunflower seeds. but i sometimes also do peanut M&Ms. and a lot of times i bring skittles on trail. Or even like a snickers bar.
but... if you're dead set on some pre-packaged thing.
I personally enjoy. honey stinger waffles. the calories to weight on these is good. plus i like them.
bougie bar: Kate's real food bars. these taste good, and seem less... process.
if i didn't go specifically to an REI or store to get those. I get clif bars. clif also makes good runner gels. (or i think they call them clif shots)
Sunflower oil is a great source of vitamin A and vitamin D, as well as Iron and Calcium. So even when there’s no sunlight, there is still sunflower oil to provide your daily dose of vitamin D sunshine! Not only that, but Sunflowers are enriched with B group vitamins, as well as vitamin E. This is as well as other minerals such as phosphorus, selenium, magnesium, and copper.
Just my 2 cents, I'm not a dietitian.
Beef jerky, banana chips, and trial mix all work well enough. I eat RX bars sometimes.
Your sugary snack bar isn't a disaster. You need a 200 or 300 calories an hour once your glycogen stores run low, and eating those calories as sugar is basically fine. There are lots of outdoor products that contain little more than sugar or glucose.
My main problem with Nature Valley bars is that they tend to be tiny. To get the number of calories you need, you have to eat a lot of them, which creates a lot of wrappers that junk up your pack. Cliff bars are similar, but they give you 250 calories each, which seems better to me.
You may benefit from adding electrolytes as well, especially if it is hot. There are lots of fancy products, but mixing plain old Gatorade powder into your water is a cheap option (I put in less than half of what they suggest). Get the sugary Gatorade, you want the calories.
Eating sugar while sitting on the couch is bad. Eating sugar while working at a huge caloric deficit isn't so bad. There might be some advantage to consuming those calories as glucose instead of table sugar (which is glucose and fructose). Once again, be thoughtful about the packaging. Packing around a dozen tiny glucose tubes gets old, and some experts actually recommend plain old sugar.
this is actually really helpful. thank you!
I love RX + Lara bars!
This is not meant as sarcasm, but the best ones are the ones you can eat. There are so many kinds/types/flavors, Sugary, savory etc. it’s best to sample a few with a higher calorie count and pick the ones with a texture and taste that you like. What works for me may not work for you.
I’ve gone on too many outings and not eaten what I’ve packed because they just didn’t taste good even though my friends gave a highly recommend. So, have a tasting party and enjoy!
what is everyone's favorite protein bars?
any recommendations? preferably ones that are accessible and don't have that chalky, tootsie-roll-like texture :)
Barebells are the best, basically indistinguishable from a candy bar. Pricey though
Yep, barebells. Would not describe them as indistinguishable fron a candy bar, but they are good. I like the cookies and cream and creamy crisp. The key lime was great too!
Cookies and cream and creamy crisp are also my favorites!
I second this! I bought the variety pack of Barebells off Amazon to try them all. Salty peanut and peanut butter are my favs!
Barebells marshmellow peanut road. Literally like a snickers protein bar!!! As someone who HATES protein bars, I literally will eat one for dessert and feel satisfied, they are so good!
I really love the Aldi brand elevation line. I’ve liked them all and I’m super picky about tasting the protein.
The chocolate covered elevation bars have great macros! They are expensive, but delicious!
right? so good- and at least lower than quest pricing, but yes it definitely adds up. I also love the caramel roll nut something lol
Built Puff if you like marshmallow. They are very similar to chocolate covered marshmallows that you often see around Easter and Christmas. Only 150 calories or so.
Barebells taste like a regular crispy chocolately candy bar. Around 200 calories.
Prime Bites if you want a thick and chewy brownie. 230 or so in calories.
RX bars, but admittedly less protein than some of the others
i’ve had a very hard time finding snacks high in protein that don’t contain any nuts and was wondering if any of yall have suggestions of protein bars or anything
Go macro sunflower butter & oatmeal chocolate chip bars (contain coconut). And I like the legendary foods protein pastry in chocolate cake & brown sugar cinnamon, as well as the quest protein cheese crackers that look like cheezits
SOME one protein bar flavors, they all say "may contain almonds" afaik but the birthday cake, maple donut, and lemon cake are favorites of mine
Go macro protein bars. There are 2 flavors that are nut free, maple sea salt and I can't remember the other one. I called them directly and was told they make those 2 flavors first on clean equipment before they make the others. Anything from enjoy life is nut free, and for a sweet tooth/chocolate there is Vermont but free chocolate.
nature valley actually came out with “lunch box bars” made in a peanut free facility! only two flavors so far but all of the information is on their website.
orgain chocolate chip snack bars for protein. they contain a little pea protein though so avoid if you are sensitive to that
Does anyone have a low or no sugar go-to protein snack bar that's balanced enough for a snack on the go? Many times I find myself out shopping after breakfast but before lunch and I'll end up going hungry until I get home. I want to know if there's a good GD friendly option to just stick in my purse in case?
Nature Valley protein bars. Very balanced between protein and carbs, and just a little sweet.
seconded these loved them - had them between lunch and dinner almost everyday
I loved these even before GD as someone with celiac!
If you're ok with sugar alcohols (they apparently upset some people's digestion) I've really liked Barebell's. I get them at Trader Joes. They don't spike me at all.
YES to Barbells! Best tasting protein bars seriously
Seconding Barebells. Never spiked me and I still eat them after graduation cause so they’re so damn good!!
Simply Protein at Costco
Good to know this! I'll take a look at what Costco has.
Seconding this, these have been getting me through my GD pregnancy. They're 2g of sugar but 13g protein and 7g fiber so they really help
I always just used the fairlife protein milks to hold me over, tastes like chocolate milk 😂
I love those things so much lol I told my husband it's like I'm drinking chocolate! Such a life saver for the mornings.
Fitcrunch!
I’m looking for a low (ish) carb but actually decent either protein or granola bars. I’m a snacker and like to have them between lunch and dinner at work and cannot find any that taste good!!
Nature valley protein chewy bars do it for me. They are 16g carb but never make me spike. I think it’s because of the nuts, it’s a good combination of nut/granola bar. Only 10g protein, so that could be better. My blood sugar might go up a tad with these, but not enough to make a difference. I specifically like the peanut butter dark chocolate ones (not sure how the other flavors are for carbs/protein). Kirkland has a very similar one but I think the nature valley ones taste slightly better. Kirklands are cheaper.
I love these too, I agree I don’t spike from these either
I love Pow'r Crunch vanilla bars. IIRC they have 11 carbs and 14g protein.
I eat a lot of cheese and nuts
Yeah, nothing really hits like sugar hits.
That is why sugar is so addictive.
I like the Pure Protein bars, as they are delicious, and come in lots of crazy flavors. Also partial to the Power Crunch chocolate mint. It's like a big chocolate covered wafer cookie, with really good carb to protein stats.
The Aldi Elevation bars are OK, but the sugar alcohols mess me up sometimes. What I won't put up with for the cut-rate protein bars!
Something low calorie, high protein, filling and tastes good. Trying to stock up on protein bars for lunch since I don’t really get the time to eat something any less convenient. Let me hear your suggestions!
I like Simply Protein. But I can't have dairy, so they're one of the few options I can have. They're a lot more simple and lower calorie than most others, and the texture is kind of like rice krispie squares, which is unique and fun. I get them at Costco in a pack of 3 flavours (chocolate almond, chocolate peanut, and lemon coconut).
Barbells are my favorite. They don’t taste like protein bars but pack 20g of protein in 200cal.
And damn near all of them are good.
Cookies and cream is my personal favorite, but chocolate dough, Carmel peanut, the banana one are all so good.
If I stopped lifting, id still probably eat them.
Skip Birthday Cake. That flavor is unbearable.
This is the right answer.
Pure protein Galactic Brownie is really good w 20g protein, 180 cals. Like all barebells are great as well, they kinda all taste like candy bars
David Bars. They’re expensive but amazing numbers
Definitely 150 cals 28g protein just can’t be beat
Just checked them out they look so good! Definitely trying them next
I find the fiber in Quest bars and Kirkland bars crazy satiating, so if fullness is an issue go with them. David bars are also probably great just because they're so low calorie
best protein bars for snack?
Key Considerations for Choosing Protein Bars:
Protein Content: Look for bars with at least 10-20 grams of protein per serving to effectively support your snacking needs.
Sugar and Carbohydrates: Check the sugar content; aim for bars with less than 5 grams of sugar and moderate carbohydrates (around 20-30 grams) to avoid spikes in blood sugar.
Ingredients: Choose bars with whole food ingredients and minimal additives. Look for natural sources of protein like whey, casein, or plant-based proteins.
Fiber Content: A good protein bar should have at least 3-5 grams of fiber to help keep you full and support digestion.
Taste and Texture: Since you'll be snacking on these, pick flavors and textures you enjoy. Many brands offer a variety of flavors to suit different preferences.
Recommendations:
Quest Bars: High in protein (20g), low in sugar (1g), and high in fiber (14g). They come in various flavors and have a chewy texture.
RXBAR: Made with simple ingredients like egg whites, nuts, and dates. Each bar contains around 12g of protein and no added sugars.
Clif Builder's Protein Bar: Offers 20g of protein and is made with organic ingredients. It has a more indulgent taste, making it a satisfying snack.
ONE Protein Bar: Contains 20g of protein, 1g of sugar, and comes in delicious flavors like Birthday Cake and Peanut Butter Pie.
Choosing the right protein bar depends on your dietary preferences and taste, so consider trying a few different options to find your favorite!
