TL;DR
Popular Choices
Nugo bars are frequently recommended for their taste and variety. The dark chocolate pretzel flavor is particularly popular [2:1]
[5:2]. They have a good mix of flavors but can be high in sugar, which might not suit everyone’s dietary needs
[3:6]. Aloha bars also received praise for their taste, with flavors like chocolate chip and fudge being favorites
[1:7]
[3:10]. Clif Builder's Bars are another favorite, known for their lack of sugar alcohols and satisfying texture
[1:6]
[5:4].
Texture and Taste Preferences
Texture is a significant factor when choosing a protein bar. Some users found No Cow bars to have a dry, sand-like consistency, while others appreciated their cake-like texture [4:3]
[4:1]. Trubar was noted for having a slightly chalky texture but still more pleasant than some other brands
[1:4]. If you prefer a softer texture, heating up bars like Aloha in the microwave can enhance the experience
[1:9].
Sugar Content and Ingredients
Many vegan protein bars contain sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners, which can affect taste and digestion. For those looking to avoid these, Nugo Slim bars offer a better protein-to-calorie ratio without excessive sugar [5:7]. Simply Protein bars are another option for those seeking lower sugar content
[5:10]. It's important to check ingredient lists for elements like soy protein isolate, which some dietitians advise against
[2:2].
Protein-to-Calorie Ratio
For those focused on macros, Clif Builder's Bars and No Cow bars provide a solid protein-to-calorie ratio, though No Cow bars may contain sugar alcohols [5:8]
[5:11]. Misfits bars were mentioned as having good macros but mixed reviews on taste
[2:4].
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
If you're open to making your own bars, consider recipes that incorporate whole nuts and natural sweeteners to tailor the taste and nutritional profile to your liking. Additionally, exploring local health food stores or online retailers might yield new options that fit your specific dietary needs and taste preferences.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a vegan protein bar? There was one I used to get a few years back that I think was Vega brand? But they don't seem to have those anymore. That one was really good so I'm hoping to find something similar but haven't had any luck.
I didn't like IQ Bars or No Cow bars. But I think that was more of a texture thing. The Vega ones had more whole nuts from what I remember vs being a ground up mush reconstituted into a bar.
Tbh I'd also be open to recipes for bars if that a thing people have done.
Nugo is my favorite. If you try out Nugo Slim, not all of the flavors are vegan.
I second Nugo! I usually go for the crunchy PB. 16g of protein, 6g of fiber—and they taste good.
I actually was surprised how much I enjoyed Trubar. They’re slightly chalky but somehow in so much more pleasant of a way than No Cow
The glazed donut flavor is insanely good!
I love the glazed donut! I eat it as a treat.
Aloha bars are my favorite, but I like nugo too
Builder's Bars here. They're easy to find and not too expensive.
On a related note, I made a kickass pea protein mango lassé last night. :D
Clif builder bars are my forever favorite! And no sugar alcohols to ruin my guts
The Aloha bars are my absolute favorite. The chocolate chip one or the fudge one are both really good!
Yes! Sooo good! Heat them up in the microwave on parchment paper for 10 seconds and they are even better!
Ooooooh, definitely gonna do this!
My husband prefers the Aloha the best too
Looking to try some new protein bars with decent macros and taste. My favorites are Nugo, but I need to mix it up sometimes and the protein content could be better. I've tried quite a few, No Cows are great, but not all the time, plus fiber is quite high. Builder bars taste great, but are high calorie for a snack. I recently ordered Misfits based on internet review and they are quite awful. I've tried quite a few others, and also make my own sometimes. Your suggestions are appreciated!
IQ bars are pretty good. Fairly low calorie, as far as bars go, 180, with 12g of protein. I have only had the chocolate sea salt, but I liked it. Orgain bars are pretty good too. Edit to add, my dietitian said soy protein isolate is not very good for the body, so I try to stay away from bars with that
I try not to rely to much on bars but occasionally I’ll have one. I love the Nugo dark chocolate and pretzel. Other than that I can’t be much help. I have tried at least 2 dozen different brands over the past few years and most taste like crap or are made of mostly crap.
I agree the Nugo dark chocolate pretzel are the best. I usually have one after dinner for dessert. Otherwise I only use protein bars if I'm in a hurry in the morning or after the gym. I have tried many as well, some ok and some nasty. According to results on Google for best tasting, they list all the gross ones, so I'm not certain those people even tried them 😂
Never trust google reviews 😂
We’ve been enjoying Misfit bars; we get the variety pack on Amazon.
I ordered the variety pack and some individual boxes...they were absolutely awful in my opinion.
Oh nooo 😭they’re some of my favorite so far haha
Yeah… I’ve tried a lot as well and Nugo peanut butter cup can’t be beat for taste. If I need extra protein then I just grab a pre-made Orgain shake we buy from Costco which has 20 grams of protein with 140 calories.
For best mix of cost/protein/calories, cliff builders on Amazon. But for strictly best macros/cost (not as high calories) nocow on ebay. Can get a pack of 24 for $26 on ebay for nocow
Costco has a ton of Cliff builders as well.
Do you know the pricing for a pack of X?
Thank you, I have tried those and many others. Was hoping for some other ideas, but sounds like we are all in the same boat!
I've tried Nugo. I like the taste of the regular chocolate chip and mint ones but I feel it has excess sugar that I don't need atm. The peanut butter nugo slim tastes absolutely dreadful to me. Peanut butter larabars are the only ones that I have seemed to really agree with and they hardly have enough protein to justify as a protein source.
For Nugo bars - have you tried the chocolate covered pretzel ones? Those are my absolute favorite!
As for other bars that are higher in protein and lower in sugar - I like No Cow bars. However I think they may be an acquired taste. I've seen a lot of comments from people saying they don't like them. But I do lol. Worth a try at least!
Second this, I also love NoCow. I also enjoy the Simply Protein crispy bars, but they sometimes cause a little bloating.
The No Cow chocolate peanut butter are my go to.
I like clif builders the chocolate and peanut butter ones. They do have some sugar though
I think these are best flavor wise but they’re basically a candy bar with a bit more protein.
Agreed, but honestly it's not that terrible if you have the room in your diet and limit added sugar in general. I eat one of these every day as a snack with 2 servings of dry roasted edamame. Together packs about 48g protein, 19g fiber (mostly from the edamame), 17g sugar (not the end of the world when put in perspective with the rest of the meal), 540 calories.
this is probably going to be super unpopular, but I actually quite like the no cow protein bars. I'm not a big protein bar person as a planned out food, but always keep one in my purse for just in case.
Aloha bars are my favorite. 220 calories: 9g fat, 26g carbs (10g fiber, 3g added sugar) and 14g protein - so the macros could be better - but they’re the tastiest ones I’ve found
Big fan of Aloha Bars too. Very tasty and good flavors.
I agree I think Aloha is one of the best-ingredients and fiber wise, I’d appreciate a little more protein from them but the flavors are so good I wouldn’t want it to be ruined.
I really like the vegan misfit options as well as the vegan barbells too! Nugo mint is one of my favs for the thin mint vibe.
If you like the old style you can get past best before ones on nutricircle. Like £30 or so for 42 bars
Can someone here add their reviews of the following bars? I'm curious to know your thoughts.
Note: No Cow is a vegan protein bar brand - probably the only one, which has a 10:1 calorie:protein ratio - that can even be allowed to call itself a protein bar. (all other vegan protein bars are basically vegan snack bars)
GREAT
- Dipped Donut - Like a soft brownie. Love the softness.
- Blueberry Cobbler - Amaaaazing, not too sweet
- Lemon Mirangue Pie - Good
OKAY
- Cookies and Cream
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
NOPE
- Chocolate Fudge Brownie - Just plain bad, no chocolate flavor.
- Birthday Cake - Too sweet
- Shmores - Too sweet
- Pumpkin pie - Too fking sweet
- Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip - No choc chips. Just Nope
- Chunky Peanut Butter - Same as Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip
- Dipped Birthday Cake - Too sweet
- Dipped Chocolate Salted Caramel - Horrible weird salty sweet.
- Dipped Chocolate Peanut Butter - Haaaateeee it. Weird texture.
(YET TO TRY:)
- Dipped Key Lime - ?
- Dipped Sticky Cinnamon Roll - ?
Look - they have palm oil in them (I don't really care about the responsibly sourced label - there's no place that I can see have it be responsible), almonds, produced on non-vegan equipment - I don't see how these are vegan. That's why I stopped eating them. Then there's so much more dangerous ingredients, like glycerin and erythritol. I could go on, but no - I wouldn't really want to review this.
Interesting the downvotes, considering the sound information.
well thanks! There are people saying that they're following me just to downvote my comments - because they just don't like it - because they take the carnistic stance in a vegan subreddit. What can we do (except fight back with upvotes and confronting them and whatnot)?
I'm new here. I really like the no cow protein bars. I'm not on a vegan diet specifically, but I really like the macros in these. Unlike many people, I like the consistency compared to most protein bars, these are more of a cake or brownie consistency to me, of course, I like my cake with no icing, lol. The only thing is I wish they didn't make me poop so much, most sugar-free or low sugar things don't do it, only these, and the Nature's Bakery brownies, I wonder why? Most protein bars I've tried have more of a chewy sticky consistency, these don't, and it's awesome! I've tried the choc chip cookie dough, and I've also tried the mint, unfortunately, I can't find the mint anywhere in 2025.
If you enjoy protein bars with a dry sand like consistency, you’ll love them.
It’s been a few years since I’ve had any, but I’d rate them as consistently the worst protein bars (taste-wise) I’ve ever had.
The bioavailable protein in them is closer to 12g (take RDV % and divide by two to calculate bioavailable, rather than raw). This places them still high on the scale but still not amaaazing
False! They’re all the best thing ever. Perfect macros, I’m at the gym now about to go eat one after and it will be key lime and I will love it
Looking for low fat and natural sugar versus stevia or sugar alcohol, both of which I don’t care for the taste.
Nugo bars! Especially the dark chocolate pretzel flavor!
I LOVE the nugo slim bars, too. Best nutrition stats (16-17g/170-180cals) I’ve found and the pb chocolate is decadent
Nugos are so good, they really almost don't taste like protein bars! I have a hard time finding them, though, so I usually go with orgain or no cow.. Those just kind of taste like protein bars, but they're definitely not terrible.
I enjoy those brands too, especially No Cow. Though they both contain sugar alcohols, so I'm not sure that OP would like them!
NuGo are the king of flavor but they’re really just candy bars. The calorie to protein ratio is so hard to justify
NuGo Slim, on the other hand, has great protein ratios (usually like 16-17 grams for a 160-170 calorie bar).
Can't go wrong with a clif builder bar
Was going to recommend this but wasn’t sure about fat content. They’re delicious.
Clif builder bars, misfits are good if you want to keep the calories down but fairly sure it’s fake sugar
I like simply protein!
No Cow chocolate chip cookie dough 🤘🏻always soft. Husband and I enjoy several favors and eat one a day.
These have sugar alcohols though right? Texture aside I remember these being really artificially sweet
Any recommendations welcome? I’m aware of PhD plant protein bars which are yummy but I’m pretty clueless beyond that.
I would also be open to making my own if it’s not too tricky.
Realistically, if I don’t get my protein in via “cheat” ways i.e. non whole foods, then I often find I struggle to meet my protein goals!
I like the No Cow bars the best, Clif Builder are good too but have more sugar than I like.
Go macro is my favorite! No cow has probably the highest protein but the taste is a little chalky/artificial.
I’m cheap, and the least expensive I’ve found per gram of protein on Amazon are Clif Builders (20g per bar) and Nugo Slim (17g.) Prices vary, I just get whichever is least expensive.
Clif Builders do have a fair amount of added sugar. Both taste fine to me.
I like No Cow, Nugo, Barebells, Clif Builder, and GoMacro
No cow has the best macros but not the best taste in my opinion. My favorite flavors are the s’mores, cookie dough, cookies and cream, birthday cake, and pretty much any of the dipped ones (especially key lime pie).
Nugo slim bars are also really good and have pretty decent macros, but not quite as good as No Cow. I find them more enjoyable though. Just make sure it’s one of the vegan flavors!
Misfit bars are really good, but macros don’t compare to the 2 above.
I’ve tried SO many vegan protein bars but for the last year I have been completely hooked on the No Cow bars specifically due to their macros. But they recently have started a new line called “dipped” where now it’s so delicious and still the same macros.
Anyone find a bar with better macros?
21g Protein 26g Carbs 4g Fat
I also like the NuGo slim bars. It's not about the macros for me but I think they're like 180cal and 16g protein. So a little less protein but low cal so fits in my day well
If you're in the US, plant-based Barebells from Trader Joe's
More fat and carbs, but Clif Builders Bars are cool too.
Those are my favorite lol
No Cow is the best imo. And I haven’t even tried dipped yet 👀
I hate that I can't find anything better than No Cow. I just get so tired of them. Great macros but the texture and flavor can be really hit or miss for me :/ dipped are good though
Yea their original bar was mediocre but the dipped are way better lol
These are mine. Kinda expensive but next to barbells one (who are to fugde for my taste), they are okay.
Yeah, these also get my vote. I abhor the taste and texture of all of the No Cow bars. 😫
I really like No Cow. The cookie dough and peanut butter ones are fire
Omggggggg I love no cow so much so that I literally have one of their bars every single day since I tried them
No Cow are my favorite. They taste good and have ~20g protein in each bar.
Eta: These look delicious and the next time I'm in Germany I'm going to have to find some!
Nugo vegan bars are my fav taste wise and my go to’s but wish they had more protein. Misfits are also good but I hate having to order them.
I like the Nugo Slim because they have more protein. Only 4 flavors though.
Yess Nugo!! I was just about to respond with that. Misfits are also good too but I feel more full with Nugo. The chocolate sea salt pretzel is 🔥
Yeah the pretzel one is so good! Literally a candy bar but with protein and it makes me happy
Haha are you German?? I'm also a fan of Rocka Nutrition, you should try their butter cookie bars. But the best protein bars I've ever had are the ones form Atlas Samrt Snacks, hands down🙌
I buy on Vitacost usually either when they are on sale or if I have a 20% off coupon. My local grocery store sells them as well as Target around here. (Also on Amazon, but I try not to buy food from them.)
High protein, 20g
If you happen to be in Texas I get them at HEB. For more general stores I can also find them at Sprouts and Whole Foods. I’m not sure where else.
Looking for good protein carb balance, no fake sugars, low/no oils.
What are your favorite store bought or homemade recipes?
During my gym rat days I would only eat protein bars if I was traveling or in a bind where I couldn't get or make any decent vegan food. Most of them have way too much sugar and I really dislike the ones with artificial sweeteners and stuff in them.
The best thing I found was to carry around single doses of protein powder in little containers. I'd mix that in a shaker bottle with 1/4 cup of apple juice out of a bottle and fill the rest up with water. The powder I used was like 45 % rice 45 % pea and 10% hemp with no flavorings or sweeteners added. I'd drink it 3-4 times a day. Each drink had 20-25g of protein and less sugar than many protein bars.
I've heard of folks mixing up things like oatmeal, dried fruit or dates, almond butter, and protein powder to make homemade protein bars but I never had much success with it. I guess you would make them on a cookie sheet, then cut them into portions and wrap them in wax paper before freezing if you wanted them to keep for a long time.
Misfit bars are INCREDIBLE and taste like candy bars. No Cow has better macros and are pretty good too.
Clif builder bars, they’re a bit larger than most easy to just cut in half. They do have sugar but i would rather have actual sugar than fake sugar those usually kill my stomach
No meat athlete energy bar formula recipe, look up that one it’s great you can play with it to get the ingredients and macros you want
I like the clif builder bars too
Nugo Slim Mint ones are super tasty with pretty good macros!
BAREBELLS VEGAN PROTEIN BARS Hazelnut & Nougat, a tad too sweet for me tho
Barebells have sugar alcohols which maybe aren’t fake sugars but they are potentially very hard to digest (for me anyhow) so proceed with caution initially
i second this!! they’re so freaking hard to find nowadays tho
Ideally I would like high protein(20g+), low-ish calories (230 or under) that are dairy free! I’ve done no cow in the past but it no longer agrees with my stomach. Even if you have a homemade recipe I don’t mind that. Sometimes I need something quicker than making a protein shake since I’m always on the go. All I’ve found are bars that are like 300 calories for 10 grams of protein. Thank you for any help!!
A Vegan one?, How have I missed that!
I looked through their protein bar section and all had whey protein and I was pretty disappointed, but maybe my store doesn't have that one.
The vegan Nugo slims are 17g and taste pretty good! My fave flavor was raspberry truffle but it looks like they are no longer carrying it 🥲
I get the raspberry truffle one from sprouts! If you have one near you.
Costco has a pack with the Nugo dark chocolate bars (pretzel and chocolate chocolate chip) that are yummy! 12 g of protein, though.
I LOVE the mint chocolate and chocolate pretzels one, low in protein for me to consider it a protein bar but always liked having as a snack :)
I just bought a box of Clif Builders Protein Bars and they taste pretty good. 290 cal 20g of protein, 29g carbs, and 11g fat.
Love these bars but they’re a tad high on the sugar content with 17 g of total sugar, and 17 g of added sugar.
https://shop.clifbar.com/products/clif-builders-chocolate-peanut-butter
i love these too! they r a little higher in cals tho
I’m hoping to find lower cal bars but for days when I have no time to eat these will work :)
these are very hard texture wise. they taste good for the first few bits but I get sick of them quickly
Aloha bars are great !
Okay, as someone who eats a LOT of vegan protein bars, here’s my power ranking:
1. Misfits - for me, these are the best. Tasty, easy to digest, 14-16g protein/bar depending on the flavor. The chocolate caramel flavor has 16G protein and only 180 calories with no added sugar. The only downside is they’re a little high in saturated fat, but nobody’s perfect.
2. Barbells Plant-Based - this is the best-tasting vegan bar on the market imo, but it’s a little higher-cal (225) and I don’t love that they’re a mostly whey-based company. But they taste like a candy bar and make for a good treat.
3. Aloha - these ones also taste quite good, they aren’t too high in sugar and have a good amount of protein (~14g/bar). Love the variety of flavors, too. If I were going to eat more than one bar in a day this is probably what I’d go with.
4. NuGo Slims - great macro ratios on these and not the worst tasting, though I find them to be a little chalky for my liking. Still, 17g protein in a 170-cal bar is nothing to complain about.
5. Cliff Builders - these are 290 calories and have 17g added sugars, which sucks. The good thing is they have 20g protein/bar and taste good. I also give them a slight bonus for being so widely-available. It’s nice to know if I’m driving through the middle of nowhere I can always find these at a gas station.
6. NuGo (regular) - a lot of sugar (14g) and lower protein (13g), but they taste better than the slims and are pretty good in a pinch imo.
7. Go Macro - fairly low protein content (10-12g) and high sugar. Tastes like eating an oat bar and I find them a little syrupy. Not terrible x but not my favorite.
8. No Cow - these obviously have great macros and a super high protein content, but they taste terrible imo. I’ve gotten a variety pack of these and every flavor tastes the same. These are purely functional, there’s no joy to be had in them.
9. Lenny & Larry’s - the cookies are insanely high in sugar and calories and the bars have low protein. They also all taste weird and they offer a bunch of products with a mix of plant and whey protein. I tend to avoid these.
best vegan protein bars
Key Considerations for Choosing Vegan Protein Bars:
Protein Content: Look for bars that provide at least 10-20 grams of protein per serving to ensure they meet your dietary needs.
Ingredients: Check for whole food ingredients. Bars made from nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains are generally healthier. Avoid bars with excessive added sugars or artificial ingredients.
Flavor and Texture: Taste is subjective, so consider trying a few different brands and flavors to find what you enjoy. Some bars are chewy, while others may be crunchy.
Nutritional Profile: Look for bars that are low in sugar (ideally under 10 grams) and high in fiber (at least 3-5 grams) to keep you satisfied.
Allergens: If you have allergies, check for potential allergens like nuts, soy, or gluten in the ingredients list.
Top Recommendations:
RXBAR: Made with simple ingredients like egg whites, nuts, and dates, RXBARs are high in protein (12 grams) and have no added sugars.
Orgain Organic Protein Bar: These bars are plant-based, offering 10-12 grams of protein, and are made with organic ingredients. They come in various flavors and are low in sugar.
Clif Builder's Protein Bar: Each bar contains 20 grams of protein and is made with a blend of soy and nut proteins. They are also vegan-friendly and come in several flavors.
No Cow Protein Bar: These bars are dairy-free and provide 20 grams of protein with minimal sugar. They are made from pea and brown rice protein.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a balance of taste, nutrition, and quality ingredients, the Orgain Organic Protein Bar is a great choice due to its clean ingredient list and satisfying flavor.
