TL;DR
Hydrating Primers
The Smashbox Primerizer is highly recommended for its dual function as both a primer and moisturizer, providing long-lasting hydration without feeling greasy [1:3],
[2:4]. Another popular option is the First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer, which offers a smooth application and a dewy finish, although some users find it slightly greasy
[1:1],
[5:4].
Moisturizing Routine
A good skincare routine can enhance the effectiveness of primers. Users suggest starting with a hydrating moisturizer or facial oil before applying primer. Oils like rosehip oil from The Ordinary are favored for their moisturizing properties, but it's crucial to let them absorb fully to prevent interference with foundation [5:3],
[5:9].
Other Recommended Primers
The Too Faced Hangover Rx Primer is frequently mentioned for its hydrating qualities and tacky base, making it suitable for dry skin [1:2],
[2:1]. Becca's First Light Primer is noted for giving a hydrated look and enhancing complexion
[1:5],
[2:2].
Drugstore Options
For those seeking affordable options, the Milani Hydrating Primer and L'Oreal Age Perfect Primer are suggested. While not as hydrating as high-end brands, they offer decent moisture at a lower price point [2:5],
[3:4].
Additional Tips
Some users recommend mixing primer with foundation or using oils alongside primer to boost hydration further [5:1]. It's also beneficial to exfoliate lightly and ensure your morning skincare routine is adequately moisturizing to support primer application
[1:2],
[5:1].
Has anyone with dry-DRY skin found a really great primer? Moisturizer? I live in the mid-west and it’s extremely dry here, especially during the winter months. Also, tips to help with dry skin and flakiness are always appreciated!
I have very dry skin and what works for me is a good skin prep before the primer. I typically wash my face with a face scrubber for a light exfoliation. Then I apply the Clinique dramatically different moisturizing lotion and let it sit while I brush my teeth. Then I apply the Cetaphil moisturizing cream with a few drops of beauty oil mixed in. Finally, once that has sunk in a bit, I will either use the Too Faced Hangover Rx primer or the Makeup Forever moisturizing primer. Both a great, I would argue that the Too Faced on is more tacky than MUF. Also throughout the makeup application, I will spray on a moisturizing setting spray. I hope this wasn't too much, but it took me forever to figure out that I needed to do more skin prep than just one moisturizer and a hydrating primer. I would also recommend not setting or only setting certain areas of your face. If I set my fixed, I use the BareMinerals hydrating veil.
My HG primer for my dry skin is the Smashbox Primerizer. Its a primer and moisturizer in one so it helps with longevity and moisturizes. A little goes a long way which makes the $42 USD price point not too horrible since it will last you a while even with daily use. The moisturizer aspect soaks into the skin very nicely and the primer aspect gives you a slight tacky base which i really enjoy.
Smashbox Primerizer, Smashbox Primer Oil, Laura Mercier Hydrating, MUFE Nourishing (which is more hydrating/thicker than the Hydrating one, lol), It Cosmetics No. 50 Serum, Hourglass 28 Serum. Too Faced Hangover and First Aid Beauty Coconut Water are both popular and worked great for my skin, but I don't care for coconut scented products. If you like the smell, they're great options too.
Becca first light (the purple one) makes my dry skin look dewy. I’m not sure if it’s necessarily going to be super hydrating but it makes your skin look amazing.
I have dry skin and I LOVE using First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer!! Applies nice, smooth and gives a dewy finish with or without make-up (:
What is the best primer for dry, dehydrated skin? Thank you
I have dry skin, some pimples and a bit of redness. My skin is cool/pink undertones, if that makes any difference.
Any brand is welcome, drugstore or more expensive. Can be a UK, US or international brand. Preferably, high end brand. Thank you
Becca First Light primer (the purple one) gives this really hydrated look, and since I'm more tan I'm more medium dark skin tone (NC42) I feel it also cancels out sallowness, its a nice primer!
Thank you for the helpful comments
I have super dry skin and researched the best hydrating primers for myself.
I second hydrating primers. The Laura Geller Hydrating Spackle Primer saved my life las winter.
Thank you so much for the detailed reply and the helpful comments. This is great
I really like the Smashbox Primerizer and I'm not typically a primer user at all. This is great and I've noticed a real difference when I use this underneath some of my drier/more matte foundations (Fenty No Filtr Foundation, for example)
the milani hydrating primer does wonders for my skin
Thank you, I will look into this.
Too faced rx hangover primer
Sounds great thank you. Because of your username, would you mind if I asked you if you could recommend some Fenty makeup - lipstick or foundation or concealer etc? Thank you
The gloss bomb is wonderful. Smells like strawberry starburst. It comes in a travel size with a highlighter for 18 or the full size for the same price. The stunna lip paint is also long wearing for me. For the foundation, I personally like it. I use the hangover primer but I also have a sample of the fenty primer. You don’t need a lot but it’s medium to full coverage. It’s definitely sweat resistant. It dries down fast (not oxidize) so it’s best to do one side of your face then the other. I promise I am not bias. Lol for ref, I have dry skin and the foundation works fine for me and doesn’t break me out.
just bought this and i have to say, it's fabulous!
My skin is dry as a desert in the winter and my current primer (NYX Angel Veil) seems to exaggerate the worst parts. Any suggestions for a hydrating primer?
To be honest I haven't been able to find a good drugstore primer that is just as good as the Smashbox Primerizer.
Here are the ones I've tried:

I've seen people rave about the Catrice Prime & Fine Aqua Primer but I have personally never tried it.
Also seen people rec the Nyx Hydra touch but its a little pricey for me and I'm afraid to try out anymore drugstore primers lol.
Other primers I've seen good reviews on but never tried:
Sorry if this isn't helpful. I will be interested in hearing what other people recommend
I love The Ordinary High Spreadability Fluid Primer. It’s moisturizing but also has that silicone smoothing effect. I also definitely recommend moisturizing before putting on any makeup, if you’re not already doing that.
The best I have tried is the L’Oréal Age Perfect Primer. It has quickly replaced all my primers.
I like the NYX marshmallow primer.
The wet n wild glass skin corrector is pretty good. The fine pearl in it really helps diffuse texture and it has a very thick consistency so it sort of glues any flakes down flat, I sometimes just wear it alone or mixed with a drop of foundation
I haven’t worn primer in forever, I don’t really wear foundation either, just concealer. My skin gets very oily, especially now that it’s so hot in the summer. My issue is that I also get terrible dry patches that look awful under makeup. So if I try products geared towards oily skin they are too drying and products for dry skin just slip off my face. I was thinking primer could help but I have no idea which one, there are so many and I don’t want to spend a ton of money trying different ones. Any advice or product recommendations are welcome!
I love the elf power grip primer. The $5 mini goes very very far.
You can just use primer where you need it. Or if you have different stuff going on you can use more than one.
I have your same type of skin. I’ve been on journey trying every primer out there that will not make my face oily a few hours after makeup. I only apply it on the t zone and skip my dry areas. The best one right now is the Maybelline Master primer for me.
Would love some recommendations !
All primers make my skin dry. I use oil sometimes (fresh seaburry).
If my skin feels really dry, I usually use a face oil as primer. The rose hip oil by The Ordinary for example. It’s just very important to let it sink into the skin, as it could interfere with your foundation if it still sits on top. :)
Second this! Except I use an oil (Dr Jart Camo Drops) and then do primer! I also really like Kosas Oil Foundation, though you can only use it with a silicone-free primer.
So you use the oil over your moisturizer? How many drops of the rosehip oil do u typically use? And how long do you typically let it sink into the skin?
I usually use half of the applicator, which should be around 5 drops after my moisturizer and let it sink in for 10-15min.
Second vote for anything by The Ordinary.
The First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothing Priming Moisturizer is really nice. I got a small size in a package and I've been using it every day. Some reviews say it looks greasy though, but I really like it.
I actually have been using this and just ran out so wanted to try something diff bc ny skin looks so dry w foundation still
MILK hydro grip primer
Definitely agree with another user about using oils, but I also want to add that I really like using a layer of smashbox primerizer as a primer and also mixing it into my foundation before applying it to my face.
ETA: I also would make sure your morning skincare routine is hydrating/moisturizing enough for your face. I’ve also recently been mixing a couple drops of facial oil into my am moisturizer now that it’s winter and drier out.
I have horribly dry skin. Like I still have pimples here and there but I don’t think I’ve ever had oily skin unless I’m slathering on Shea butter on my face. This also means that my foundation tends to get this crusty patchy look when I wear it for a whole day, even after making sure to properly moisturise and apply sunscreen in the morning. So any recommendations for super hydrating primers would be really appreciated! Ideally under £25 but if that’s not possible then I’m happy with anything
Love the refy glow primer!! Sooo hydrating and such a nice consistency. The rolly mechanism is fun too
Thank yooou!
Nyx plump right back! It almost feels like a gel moisturiser on its own. It’s worked very well for all the foundations I’ve used it with.
I use this! Really happy for the price and quality and I have extremely peeling dehydrated skin!
Ooooh that sounds noice!
For very dry skin I use before makeup Bobbi Brown Face Base or it’s dupe for half a price Missha Super Aqua 10, which is a K-beauty hyaluronic cream. These are truly amazing, the skin is plumped and makeup just glides on top. They are not greasy. They do set as some point as the skin really absorbs the product throughout the day. Bobbi Brown vs Missha
I also have really dry skin and my all time favourite is Revlon photoready rose glow. It’s so hydrating, keeps make up in place all day and it’s about £13!
I also like This Works in transit camera close up primer. It’s more of a moisturiser consistency but it definitely helps keep make up on without dry patches. It is quite expensive though. You might be able to get a sample size?
The Revolution fix&glow primer is also great. Hydrating and a lovely lit from within look. I’m not sure if they still make it so you might have to search!
Primark does a vitamin enriched moisturising primer which is supposed to be a dupe of bobby brown. Moisturising but i didn’t find it as moisturising or kept my make up on as well as the Revlon one.
Max factor miracle prep illuminating & hydrating primer has more of a silicone smoothing feel so also good if you have some texture.
Elf halo glow is hydrating and really pretty on the skin but not so much of a primer.
Benefit ‘that gal’ was beaaaautiful but it’s not been made for years. You could try and find a dupe for that?
If I could only choose one I’d pick Revlon!
Omd so many recommendations!! This is amazing! Thank you so much 🫶🏽
No problem! I had to try loads when we were in the matte foundation only era!!
Primark have this one, which I've found is really good https://www.primark.com/en-gb/p/ps-vitamin-enriched-moisturising-primer-clear-999242523932
I didn’t know primark sold stuff like this. Thanks for the recommendation!
Hi!! Recently my skin has been a lot more dry than usual, I’ve tried a variety of different moisturizers, but I’m thinking of trying to find a separate moisturizer for before my makeup. I love my moisturizers that I have, but they don’t do well as a pre-makeup product. Any suggestions?
In the pictures I’m using.. Estēe Lauder double wear foundation in 1C0 shell Nyx epic ink eyeliner Nyx marshmallow primer & setting spray Kryolan translucent setting powder Nyx microbrow pencil in black Milani cheek kiss blush in 110 nude kiss Elf camo liquid bronzer & contour in fair
My regular moisturizers also weren't faring well under makeup, nor did they mix well with makeup products.
Currently I'm using Beplain Chamomile Lotion as my makeup moisturiser & it's going swell.
My skin type is sensitive, acne prone & combination for reference. So it might not be enough for you if you have very dry skin. But I find it very hydrating & it sheers out products without turning the shade lighter so I'm doubly in love with it.
I have combination skin as well, but it’s been on the drier side likely because of the weather. Definitely going to try this out! Thank you :)

I don't know if it's available where you live, but I usually use the Lavera Pure Beauty moisturizer. It's light weight and is absorbed within a minute or so while still giving me that moisturized feel. I then put on primer and foundation. Haven't had any issues so far.
I need a blurring primer that is also not too drying for my combo skin! I have texture from old scars and large pores, plus that wonderful combo of occasional acne and emerging wrinkles in my 30s 😑
My go-to primer has been discontinued (No. 7 Airbrush Away Tinted Skin Perfector). I liked how blurring and smoothing it was, and not drying
I bought Maybelline Master Prime Blur + Pore Minimizer but it seems to be so drying and makes my texture look awful
Any primer suggestions?
Thank you 🙏
Elf poreless putty primer is the best, It's great for smoothing and blurring, especially for texture and large pores. It’s hydrating enough for combo skin, without being too drying, and helps create a nice base for foundation. You can explore this thread, for more options!
Ok also I'm my 30s with textured skin from acne scars and also get occasional acne and wrinkles and I found that Maybelline primer to be horrible.
I haven't tried a big range of blurring primers but found that the NYX Angel Veil to be consistently decent. Haven't tried their marshmallow line but have heard good things. For a budget silicone-free version the Wet'n'Wild Impossible primer is pretty good. It can depend on what you put on top of it too, the e.l.f. power grip really does hold makeup in place but anything silicone based (that I've tried) is practically rejected.
Edit: forgot about e.l.f. liquid poreless putty primer! Not drying at all, I just think I didn't re-purchase it because there's so many primers out there to try lol
Can you recommend a concealer or anything else to use without foundation?
I mostly use concealer just to cover spots so I'm currently using the NYX pro fit stick and it blends well. For something more liquid and coverage the e.l.f. hydro camo concealer is one of few that I've bought twice in a row.
Nyx angel veil is so drying, def not friendly for textured skin
There is a new Maybelline primer called jelly hydrating blur primer lol
Combine the elf jelly pop primer with the elf poreless putty primer. If the jelly pop is not available, use the elf power grip. This is my perfect combo. Helps with textures, pores, dry patches, keeps makeup intact for long days and nights.
Do you mix them together, or do you use one primer on certain areas, and the other primer on other areas?
I do the jelly pop first, then the acne poreless putty primer. I use on all areas. My skin is on the oily side especially in the summer.
i find revolution pore blur works best for me!
Smashbox primerizer
I like NYX Marshmellow after my moisturizer but another great one is NYX Plump Right Back.
Bobbi Brown face base 🙌🏻
I second this! 👏🏾
Studio radiance by MAC, swear by it 👏
This is my favorite too!!!
yes!! i just started using it and i love it
I’m late to the game, but I have horribly dry skin, and today I dabbed a very small amount of almond oil (it’s what I had on hand) on the driest points of my face before I applied my liquid foundation, and goddamn, my skin was glowing!!! It looked so amazing, not greasy, but gave the most beautiful glassy dewy glow! I say try it! I also use the Nabla Angel aura face serum primer + physicians formula butter believe it putty primer as my base
I have really dry skin and I like my foundation to look Dewy and Glowy, I use the kvd good apple foundation and I don’t use powder because I like my make up to look glowing not Matte does anyone have a good primer that works well with this foundation and dry skin and will give me a Dewy look?
I recommend a good facial oil. Doesn't need to be expensive, look at the ordinary. I think their marula oil is pretty good, squalene and rosehip too.
I’ve already got a good oil that I use I’m just looking for a moisturiser.

I like the Laura Geller Spackle primer in the hydrating formula. Do you mean that you use the Good Apple foundation that comes in the clear plastic compact?
Yeah
best makeup primer for dry skin type
Key Considerations for Choosing a Makeup Primer for Dry Skin:
Hydration: Look for primers that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera to help moisturize and plump the skin.
Texture: Creamy or gel-based primers are often more suitable for dry skin compared to matte or silicone-based formulas, which can exacerbate dryness.
Finish: Opt for a primer that provides a dewy or luminous finish to give your skin a healthy glow and prevent it from looking dull.
Additional Benefits: Some primers offer added skincare benefits, such as anti-aging properties or SPF protection, which can be beneficial for dry skin.
Recommendations:
Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer: This primer is infused with coconut water and probiotics, providing deep hydration and a radiant finish.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer: A hybrid of a primer and moisturizer, it offers long-lasting hydration while smoothing the skin's surface.
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Hydrating Primer: This primer is designed specifically for dry skin, providing moisture while ensuring a smooth base for makeup application.
e.l.f. Hydrating Face Primer: A budget-friendly option that hydrates and preps the skin without feeling heavy or greasy.
Takeaway: Choose a primer that emphasizes hydration and a luminous finish to keep your makeup looking fresh and your skin feeling comfortable throughout the day.
