TL;DR Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Powder is highly recommended across multiple discussions for controlling oil and providing a matte finish. Other notable mentions include Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Primer and NYX First Base Primer Spray.
Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Powder
The Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Powder is frequently praised as a top choice for oily skin. Users report that it effectively controls oil throughout the day, keeping their skin matte [1:1],
[1:3],
[4:6]. It is described as lightweight and capable of absorbing oil without needing frequent touch-ups
[5:2]. The balm can be used both under and over makeup, offering versatility in application
[1:8].
Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Primer
Another popular option is the Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Primer. While effective at controlling oil, some users have noted potential acne issues [4:1]. Despite this, it remains a favored product among those with oily skin due to its mattifying properties
[4:3].
NYX First Base Primer Spray
The NYX First Base Primer Spray is also recommended for oily skin types. Users appreciate its ability to keep the face from looking extra oily by the end of the day [2:1]. It's noted for being particularly effective when applied before costume makeup on oily skin
[2:2].
Combination of Products
Several commenters emphasize that achieving a matte finish involves more than just using a primer. A combination of products, including matte foundations, setting sprays, and powders, can enhance the effectiveness of primers [1:5]. Additionally, a good skincare routine, especially one that includes sunscreen, plays a crucial role in managing oil production
[5:1].
Other Recommendations
Other primers mentioned include Smashbox Oil Control Primer [4:1], Becca Ever Matte
[2:4], and Hourglass Vanish Primer
[5:9]. These options are worth exploring if you're seeking alternatives or wish to try different combinations to find what works best for your skin type.
Guys, I’ve been oily for years. Ever since I was a teenager I’ve had oily skin. PLEASE, once and for all, what primer should I get? I need one that’s blurring and controls oil. I’ve used heavy duty stuff. I’ve used one size beauty, I’ve used urban decay, I’ve used Mehron. Please, what’s the best?
Sometimes with oily skin less is more, as in a light moisturizer as your skincare and primer is sufficient (sorry if you’ve tried this); or else setting spray as primer and then after also.
I have tried this. My makeup looks best when I do this but it doesn’t last more than 2 hours. Thanks for the suggestion!
danessa myricks blurring balm powder!!! I have extremely oily skin and I’ve spent the better part of the last decade trying different primers and powders but NOTHING has worked like this!! I recently bought armani luminous silk and I use it with this the balm as a primer and I STAY MATTE!!! it’s a miracle worker I promise
I second the Danessa Myricks blurring balm powder my t zone is super oily. When I wear that I don’t have to worry about it.
I’m gonna try this one!
I hope it works for you!! You can use it both under or over makeup so try it a few different ways too!
Yes to this!! This been my hg and i never use setting powders anymore
Gentle oil based cleanser. Oil attracts oil, I know counter intuitive but it "balances" without striping surface oils which will just make skin produce more oil.
Glycolic toner in low concentration every other day to start before primer. After a few weeks you can bump it up to every day if your skin likes it but balance is key.
Tacha liquid primer or MAC matte fine 12 hour primer. You might like a mineral powder foundation vs. Liquid.
I’ve always had a really oily t zone and an oil based cleanser has absolutely saved my life (well my skin but what’s the difference 😂)
Just a primer of not gonna save you. I’ve found that it’s more about the combination of the right products and good skincare that will help you stay matte for longer. I matte foundation is always gonna help. Layering a mattifying setting spray too. Primer does help but not just in its on. I like the elf powder grip (the pink one with niacinamide) or the danessa skin blurring balm powder in translucent. But you also need to pair it with a good mattifying powder. Asian beauty has a lot of good ones but the huda beauty one may be more accessible
I use matte foundation, setting spray, and I use one size loose powder. I’m gonna try danessa myricks. That seems to be the most used answer. Thank you!
If you’re wanting for eye makeup, I’d suggest the Urban Decay eye potion primer for eye makeup—it’s the best I’ve tried. If you haven’t tried that one already. It makes a HUGE difference for keeping stuff in place. The mini-size is very helpful. (I know you did mention trying Urban Decay, but I’m not sure if you tried that one.)
Not sure if you want eye primer or rest-of-face primer or both. But I think it might be worth investing in separate products for those, if you’re finding that the eye makeup slips off through the course of the day.
I will say, do NOT go for the rare beauty 4-in-1 always an optimist primer/setting spray. It will not meet your oily/lastingness needs.
i’m almost out of the Too Faced Primed & Peachy, which is good but i’m not sure if i want to repurchase or try something new? my skin is very oily so primer is kinda make or break for full face makeup days.
any suggestions?
I have oily skin and my favorite primer is the NYX First Base Primer Spray. I've tried other ones like the Monistat one and the Mally primer balm, but by the end of the day my face looks extra oily when I use them. Not so with the NYX one.
i do love Nyx in general, definitely going to look into that. thanks!!
Seconding this. I'm dry myself, but I do costume makeup on my oily husband sometimes and this is the primer we use for him.
L’oreal Magic Skin BB cream is a wonderful primer and will keep makeup sitting tight all day.
I've done okay with The Ordinary Hi-Adherence Primer, but I like the Becca EverMatte better. I apply them with a Sephora #70 brush, otherwise I wouldn't get even coverage and would use way more with my fingers. I, too, am in the market for a new primer. I just want to know if the Becca is as good as it gets. From these comments I'm interested to try the NYX First Base and Angel Veils. I'm also keen to try the Hourglass Mineral Veil.
Becca Ever Matte on the T zone and Laura Mercier oil-free on the cheeks. I find Ever Matte can be too drying when applied all over the face.
Maybelline baby skin keeps my oil in control all day
Which primer is best for oily skin type?
I bought the Supergoop Matte and it’s tinted and silicone-y, so it’s a sunscreen, primer and on the weekends, enough coverage for the low key bare minimum makeup for running errands, etc. I also wear foundation over it as the mood strikes, but I’ve found in my 50’s less is more when it comes to foundation. Most days I use a brightening concealer around my nose, under my eyes, with a bit also down the center of my nose, my chin and the lower middle of my forehead
But it wears beautifully alone and under makeup, and by the end of the day I’m still matte, and on a longer day, there might be a slight glow in the T zone, but not an oil slick or the foundation sitting weirdly on top of the oil. It’s pricey, but it does 3 jobs for me… sunscreen/primer/light coverage, and I’m willing to pay a bit more for something that finally works for me… I have super oily skin.
Edited to add you’ll need to double cleanse at night to get the sunscreen off. I use a cleansing balm for the first cleanse to break it down.
This. The mattescreen is amazing for summer.
I have 3 I switch between.
My absolute favorite is touch in sol no pore-blem primer.
2nd is MILK hydrogrip.
3rd ELF primer putty.
The real key is a good skincare routine will help your primer work longer, and actually perform they way you expect it to.
Smash box pore one or nars but can’t remember specific name
Good skincare
I like milk brand primer, my full face doesn’t get very oily but tzone does for sure and it helps. I use witch hazel before I put it on as well, I think that helps.
I’m naturally very oily, and these days I’m in an outrageous humidity level.
I know it’s counterproductive, but I truly love the Dior Airflash foundation. It’s lightweight, natural looking and breathable. But I’m shining through within 2 hours.
What primer do you guys recommend for extending the wearability? Thanks in advance ✨
I’m a fan of First Aid Beauty’s matte primer, but is getting hard to find so it might have been discontinued. Rimmel Stay Matte and Hourglass Veil are the two best in my current rotation.
I’m super oily and have tried about 40 primers in my search for the holy grail. I can tell you I hated elf putty primer the most.
I'm very oily myself and have really liked the Milk eclipse mattifying primer. Also what I have found works wonders for me is applying a loose setting powder after the primer/before the foundation.
My skin is quite oily and there's a few primers I like in regards to how well they control my oily skin:
-Universal Danessa Myricks blurring balm powder: feels kinda like thin Vaseline and smells like it, but honestly, it does a great job absorbing oil throughout the day. Also very lightweight and it might still be available as a GWP.
-Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse primer: also very good at controlling oil, only major issue is it seemed to cause some acne for me. But if you're not prone to breakouts, it's a great option.
-Smashbox Oil Control Primer: can feel slightly drying on the skin at first, but with makeup on top, it feels fine. It does a good job with controlling oil. My least favorite of the 3 high end primers, but worth considering.
Budget option: Elf putty primer (original)
Also does a good job as a primer and usually keeps my oils in check, though for straight oil control, I like the Danessa Myricks better. But if you've wanted to try the Tatcha primer, this one is a better, cheaper dupe of it.
I second Danessa Myricks in Universal! Kept my oilies at bay all day. Super impressed. The tinted one did not work on me though. So OP be warned if you decided to pick that one to try.
Thirding the DM. that’s my HG primer. It works well with all my foundations and keeps the oil at bay. I’m still using my first one, but I’ve already bought another as a backup. Also, you don’t need too much either.
Question---do you mean that the tinted didn't work at all (or as well) as the Universal in controlling the oil, or you just didn't like the tinted product *overall* as much as the Universal? Asking because I just got my tinted balm from the sale, but am wondering if I should get the Universal instead?
I got the GWP after listing after it for so long. I have extremely oily skin and everyone with oily skin raves about it. I’m excited!!!
IMO, I have the milk primer (I buy everything that claims to be mattifying) and it was just meh.
I placed 2 Sephora Collection orders during the sale and I picked the Danessa Myricks GWP for both orders. Definitely not disappointed, and I usually don't like primers, especially the ones with a lot of hype (they usually don't work out for me). Imo, this primer is excellent for oil control. Plus, you only need a tiny bit so even the GWP will last a long while.
I don’t know how to believe this because I got the milk matte primer and by end of day my face was a patchy mess
No advice but following cause also wondering. Well, I have tried Porefessional by Benefit and didn’t like it same with Smashbox.
I really dislike Smashbox. I know it’s everyone’s cult primer, but I feel like I have flat out plastic on my face. There’s gotta be something out there for us oily queens 😂
Danesa Myricks Blurring Balm Power. I like to use it on my oily t-zones!!!
I am making a survey in order to find my next holy grail oily skin primer. At the moment I am using the Nars Soft matte primer and I am satisfied with it, it’s about to finish and I want to know if to purchase it again or to give another one a chance. My skin is combination type, I do have veryyyyyy oily T-zone and the rest is either normal in the summer or dry in the winter. I use an oily skin primer ONLY on days when I need to look flawless for many hours ,if possible without touch up. It is also good for the skin not to use primer every day, as most ones have alcohol and they can dehydrate and make your skin sensitive and even break out. I will use ONLY the primer on top of a clean and toned skin, as the primer is a hybrid product, between skincare and a product that addresses specific skin issues. The products here featured had the best reviews according to what I am looking for: to mattyfie but hydrate, to extend the wear time of the foundation, not to break me out. Price is not a criteria, as I don’t use that much, so it lasts me a long time, but I would like to have safe ingredients and to be vegan, if possible. So please help me choose between: 🌸Smashbox Photo Finish Control Mattifying primer 🌸Makeup for ever Shine control Step 1 primer 🌸Milk Pore Eclipse Mattifying primer 🌸Hourglass Airbrush primer 🌸Benefit The POREfessional matte primer 🌸Urban Decay All nighter face primer Please recommend only from personal experience.
Have you considered Danessa Myrics Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder? I have skin like yours and have been using this for a couple of years in my t-zone, under foundation. I use the Universal (clear) shade, but also own a couple of tined shades to mix for a light makeup day.
I'm co-signing on DM as well. I've always felt no one has more oily than me and this is the only thing that works for the longest amount of time. Just be sure to wash it off nightly/daily and don't accidentally fall asleep in it, it doesn't stop working and will continue to absorb until you take it off!
This is true! I wore it overnight and my face was still reasonably matte the next morning
Found this thread googling… so do you let it sit and then apply foundation as usual? I’m in Chicago and have been living in Colorado for two and a half years. My skin is like an oil slick since I’m so used to the dry climate ):
100% came to say this too. I just started using it in December and it's for sure helped my oily skin stay matte longer during the day
Wow, am I the only one with this literally sitting on my skin like a greasy shiny layer of gritty slick with absolutely no settling down or mattifying?
I will consider it. No break outs?
I would reccomend trying the Cali Ray So Blown primer. They make a mini so you can try it and not feel terrible if you don’t like it.
One thing though, it doesn't "fill" in large pores, it just kinda mattifies the skin and holds the makeup longer
I use Hourglass Vanish primer on areas with larger pores and then a very thin layer on Danessa on my nose, sides of the nose and forehead where I get shiny
Smash box primer , light version is the best and tarte smoothing primer (white and comes in a jar)
I second Danessa Blurring Balm too
I think your skincare (especially sunscreen) goes a long way in terms of oil control. But I love the Danessa myricks yummy skin balm in translucent for extra longevity. I also really have been liking grippy primers. I used to think they sucked but I think it was just the specific one I used to use. I really like the pink elf one.
I’ve got super oily skin and my favorite primer for keeping my skin matte all day is Innisfree’s No Sebum Blur Primer! They also have a No Sebum finishing powder, or Skinfood’s Peach Cotton Powder works amazingly as well, if you want extra help keeping oil at bay.
I have this primer and don't know if I'm using it correctly. It always gets cakey and doesn't spread out well. Any tips on how you use yours?
I always use it after I moisturize, while my skin is still kind of dewy-looking. I apply a small amount (like a dot) to my nose, chin, and mouth area, and then a bit larger amount (like the size of five of those long, skinny donut sprinkles) on my forehead and cheeks where I get the most oily. I don’t generally put it anywhere on the edge of my face, just on the center I also work it in really well with my fingers and make sure it’s spread out!
Soap and Glory One heck of a blot primer has worked wonders for my oily skin
I have to disagree.. by the end of the day my face looked like a cesspool of oil. I get REAL oily.
I third Mineral Veil. It doesn't budge. Also, as long as there aren't any silicones in your primer, it should last on oily skin.
Hourglass Veil Primer. Waterproof and foundation WILL NOT BUDGE over it. Also makes every foundation look so much better and you will definitely decrease the amount of powder you use, if you're alresdy using one.
Hourglass veil changed everything!!! I’m currently traveling through Asia, so basically it’s extremely hot and humid on top of my oily skin, and this magical potion somehow keeps things intact!
I'm a huge fan of elf's primers. They have a great oil control primer mist. For extra control I'll use it over either their poreless primer or blemish control primer depending on how my skin is behaving for the day.
What is the best oily skin primer? I am constantly oily and when I sweat, it gets worse..
Best High End: Smashbox Photo Finish Oil and Shine Control Primer.
Best Drug Store: Rimmel Stay Matte.
You can thank me later!
Can’t wait, thank you so much!
I really like the Laura Mercier primers - the blemish-less one was the best but they discontinued that so now I use the Perfecting one. They aren't silicon heavy, feel quite cooling when you apply and give the right amount of grip to keep your foundation in place while also allowing you to blend really easily too.
Thank you so much!
i love "too faced hangover rx 3 in 1 peach" its a prime, set,& refresh spray i have dry/ oily as well. i just got the same brand but in watermelon. a little pricey but sometimes tj max carries it for $12.99 silicone ones tend to clog pores and make the makeup slip and slide however if silicone the "touch in sol no pore blem"smells amazing & goes along way.
Thank you very much!!!
I’m looking for a primer for someone with oily skin. Does anyone have any suggestions? Some of the primers I have tried make my oily skin even worse! So frustrating 😅
Don't laugh. Not Sephora, not high end, but....Wet n Wild Prime Focus primer serums work amazingly on my oily, mature skin.
I use the purple one with foundations like Dior Forever Skin Glow and the orange one with my Dior Forever Matte.
My skin isn't as oily as it used to be (it's more combination now), but I liked these ones:
-Smashbox oil control primer
-Danessa Myricks universal blurring balm
-Milk Makeup Mattifying primer (black tube)
-not marketed as a primer for oily skin but I also like the Elf original putty primer. It's always worked for me, whether I've got super oily skin or dry patches.
The only primer that’s ever worked for me is danessa myricks blurring balm
I’ve had some luck with Danessa Myricks blurring balm!
For me, the best thing I’ve ever used that actually keeps my oil under control is actually the supergoop matte screen sunscreen. It’s the texture of benefit Porefessional primer and it works as a primer and sunscreen in one. That’s the only thingsthat keeps me from having to powder all day long.
I’m looking for a primer for someone with oily skin. Does anyone have any suggestions? Some of the primers I have tried make my oily skin even worse! So frustrating 😅
Which ones have you tried? I like recommending the Smashbox primer, NYX Face Glue, MAC Mattifying Primer
Yes, Smashbox has been great for me. I have super oily skin.
I have been using a sample of Estee Lauder primer that has been great. Mixed reviews on Ulta, but so far I love it.
try the Pore Eclipse primer from Milk Makeup!
that stuff is a banger!
Have you tried Benefit’s matte primer? It’s in a pink tube and I find that it works great for oily skin.
The Pore-fessional primer?
They have the original primer which is in a teal tube, I think now repackaged with a little bit of pink. But the new matte is just a pink tube.
What is everyone’s favorite primers for oily skin? It doesn’t matter if they are drugstore or high end! I currently use a cover girl one and I don’t really like it. I’m trying to find a new one!
I didn’t mind the Too Faced Primed and Peachy primer, which I just finished using. I liked the Dr Brandt Pores No More, and right now I’m liking a moisturizer/primer combo from Origins (Original Skin pore perfecting line).
My two cents, though, is that Benefit porefessional did not work for me; it didn’t keep my oil at bay at all and compared to other primers I have used actually seemed to make my nose more oily. Maybe just try a sample or travel size first?
Thank you! That’s smart getting a travel size first and trying it out! I never thought about doing that lol
Hourglass Mineral Veil & UD Optical Illusion! They work great on my oily skin.
Laura Mercier (I prefer the anti blemish but the oil one is good too). I like it because it's got more of a thin, lotion feel that sinks into my skin, I feel like silicone primers actually make me more oily
Cover FX mattifying primer!
Becca ever matte for oily areas and Innisfree no sebum primer for areas with big pores!
best makeup primer for oily skin type
Key Considerations for Choosing a Makeup Primer for Oily Skin:
Oil-Free Formula: Look for primers labeled as oil-free to help control shine and prevent excess oil production throughout the day.
Mattifying Properties: Choose a primer with mattifying ingredients like silica or clay, which can help absorb oil and reduce the appearance of pores.
Long-Lasting Wear: Opt for primers that claim to extend makeup wear, as they can help keep your makeup intact and reduce the need for touch-ups.
Lightweight Texture: A lightweight, gel-based or water-based primer is often best for oily skin, as it won’t feel heavy or greasy.
Non-Comedogenic: Ensure the primer is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, which is crucial for oily and acne-prone skin.
Top Recommendations:
