TL;DR
Recommended Primers
Several primers have been recommended by users with sensitive skin. The Maybelline Serum Primer is praised for not causing itchiness and contains niacinamide [1:1]. Estée Lauder Perfectionist is another option that has worked well for some users
[2:1]. Bare Minerals Prime Time is noted for being well-tolerated, although it might not offer much oil control
[3:1]. CoverFX is also highlighted as a great line for sensitive skin
[3:5]. Lancôme’s La Base Pro is recommended for its effectiveness, despite being a bit of a splurge
[5:1]. Additionally, 100% Pure's primers are suggested for their natural ingredients and cruelty-free status
[5:3].
Alternative Solutions
For those with extremely sensitive skin, alternative solutions such as using sunscreen or moisturizer as a primer can be beneficial. Some users recommend using rich sunscreens like La Roche-Posay 60SPF Dry Touch gel cream or hydrating emollient creams like La Roche Posay Ciciplast or Cerave as a base [3:3]
[3:4]. These products can provide a smooth base while avoiding unnecessary additional products on the skin.
Avoiding Irritants
When selecting a primer, it's important to avoid ingredients that may irritate sensitive skin. For instance, one user mentioned they couldn't handle niacinamide, which is present in many skincare products [4]. It's crucial to check ingredient lists and possibly conduct patch tests before fully incorporating a new product into your routine.
User Experiences
Users have shared mixed experiences with different products. For example, Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer and Elf primers did not meet expectations for one user, highlighting the importance of finding a product that works specifically for your skin type [5]. It's often a process of trial and error to find the perfect match.
Final Recommendations
While specific recommendations were made, it's essential to consider personal skin sensitivities and preferences. Consulting with a dermatologist or conducting thorough research on ingredients can help ensure the chosen primer will be gentle on sensitive skin.
Hi! I was wondering what would be a good makeup primer for sensitive dry/combo skin? There are so many options on the market that I don't know where to start. I wear tint instead of foundation and tend to get allergic reactions from strong chemicals. Thank you!
I’m not sure if I have sensitive skin but so far the Maybelline serum primer has been the primer that doesn’t make my face feel itchy. It has niamicidmade as well
Estée Lauder perfectionist worked well for me. They also have a pore minimizer one too.
Thank you!! I’ll check it out
I haven’t worn makeup in years due to extremely sensitive skin. There is so much more makeup out there than when I was a teen, and I really want to be able to wear it again. My problem is my sensitive skin, and I’m not finding exactly what I’m looking for when I look online. (Maybe I’m typing in the wrong terms?)
I have very allergic skin on my face; my eczema will break out into blisters and start to ooze if it becomes too irritated. When I look for “sensitive skin” primers, it is giving me results for acne. I don’t have an acne problem though. Does anyone else have this problem and could give me any suggestions on a primer that is less for acne and more for skin like mine?
I just apply a heavier layer of moisturizer works just the same
I do the same. I use Ponds as a primer, which some may find weird because it’s actually makeup remover/moisturizer, but it works really well for me.
Never tried their stuff :( I have oily/acne prone skin and I have used the Neutrogena oil free one from the pink grapefruit line... Just ordered that famous CeraVe one in a tub, hope it works better
i recommend a rich sunscreen for sensitive skin as a primer! I use La Roche-Posay 60SPF Dry Touch gel cream for sensitive skin and it works well. very smooth base.
I have bad eczema as well. I just use a good sunscreen as primer. Most of the ones that are a bit more oily / hydrating are good primers and you avoid unnecessary products on your skin. You could also try a hydrating emollient cream like La Roche Posay Ciciplast or Cerave. My best and only primers I use (if I must) are the Fenty primer and the Nars Radiant primer. Never had issues with those but generally I find I do not need a primer. I will also add that when my eczema is not under control, the type of product is important but not as important as controlling the eczema. As you can see from my previous comments, my eyes are very sensitive and while I am looking for really good tolerable eyeshadows, I am also focus on controlling the skin reaction because it is so bad that even my high end brushes will irritate my eyes. If you have such bad eczema on your face that it is impacting your ability to use any makeup (which is actually something that people with eczema should be able to enjoy if they wish; i.e. makeup is not prohibited for skin with eczema), it may be worth looking into if your doctor needs to prescribe something or something different. When my eczema was bad, I had to get it under control with meds and then my options opened up a lot more
Try CoverFX. The whole line is amazing for sensitive skin.
Bare minerals prime time is usually very well tolerated. It doesn’t offer much in the oil control department.
I feel like I've looked at every primer out there and I can't seem to find one that works for me. I was so close with the Caliray So Blown primer -- It's exactly what I need:
Not drying, but still fairly mattifying/pore-minimizing.
But my skin can't handle niacinamide (I know...).
Oily/combo skin begging for some help here. TIA. 🖤
Purcell 24/7 colostrum mist.

#Do not ask for a diagnosis/treatment advice for acne or other medical conditions, and do not play doctor
What constitutes medical advice?
This is asking someone to diagnose the issue, and is medical advice.
This is asking someone to advise treatment, and is medical advice.
This is asking if you should seek treatment, and ergo, medical advice.
If you would ask the question of your doctor, it falls under this rule and not allowed. As a general rule, asking for medical advice from internet strangers is never a good idea. If you have questions regarding your acne or other medical condition, you are advised to contact your healthcare provider. If you are a medical provider, we would gently remind you that users are not patients, and you should not be offering medical advice to people who are not your patients.

I actually use a chafing gel and it’s literally a lifesaver. I use Maker Explorador Equate Chafing Gel Relief. It completely hides my pores and doesn’t let my t zone get oily throughout the day. I use it after my Eucerin oil control SPF.
Can anyone recommend a good, pore-minimizing primer for sensitive skin, that isn't crazy expensive? I tried the Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer but it didn't seem to do anything at all. Then I tried one from Elf and threw it out not long after, because not only did it not do what it said it would (smoothing/minimizing), but also made my foundation look like total cakey, wavy, uneven shit.
If it helps, I use IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ foundation.
Could also use a recommendation for a good concealer. Didn't care for the IT Cosmetics one, as it seemed to amplify the fine lines under my eyes. I'm only 34 and look younger than I am, but as soon as I used that stuff I instantly looked older, lol.
Thanks if anyone can help!
Primer wise - the best is Lancôme’s La Base Pro. Splurge on this, use a little bit, and be amazed at the money you save on the rest of your makeup. Concealer is a different story, I used to use NYX but they added coconut oil which breaks me out like crazy, so now I’m on the hunt too...
Ahhh, excellent, thanks for the recommendation. I just ordered a small tube of it to see how it goes.
Let me know if you find a good concealer, lol. I've tried several but they all enhance fine lines and I am not a fan. Even my foundation does it if I get it on my undereye area.
I love 100% pure’s primers: they have a mattifying for oil control and a luminous. Great ingredients, cruelty free.
Concealer wise I’m a fan of RMS beauty un cover-up and Clove + Hallow concealer
Hallo zusammen 🙋🏻♀️
I have sensitive, combination, and acne prone skin. I’ve never used primer before as I’ve mostly stuck to just wearing mascara, but im ready to dive into the makeup world more! My nose generally gets pretty greasy and that worries me because I don’t want the makeup to separate? And recommendations or tips are very welcome!
I have the same skin type and also curious about this! I do also have larger pores… so I wonder what people recommend!!
Someone said benefit cosmetics primer
Thank you!!
I like benefits pore perfect or elf has a good range. Smashbox is nice too but I find it a smidge greasy.
Like smashbox leaves a greasy shine? Or separates your makeup? Around my chin and outer forehead I tend to get pretty dry. But I did say my nose tends to get pretty greasy.
I would choose elf or benefit for combo skin

HydroGrip by MILK has a cult following for a reason. It will really make your makeup stay all day and not budge
If u r new to primers, this thread has some really good drugstore recs, especially gud for combo and acne-prone skin like urs. It 'll be really helpful for finding one that won’t clog pores or slide off a greasy nose.
I’ve been on the hunt for a new primer to invest in, and wanted to get some recommendations. I don’t usually use primers as I’ve always been a fan of just moisturizing thoroughly before my makeup, however the pores/texture on my cheeks are just a bit too noticeable for my liking so I’m hoping someone might be able to offer some advice as to which primers would work the best at smoothing and blurring those areas. Price isn’t really an issue either, I just want something that works!
My skin type is more of a dry/normal everywhere except my t-zone and cheeks, which tend to lean a bit more oily.
Some primers I have tried in the past already: Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer, NYX Angel Veil, Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer.
No poreblem by touch in sol is my absolute favorite for filling in pores. I have combo/oily skin with dry patches, and it works well for all areas on my face.
I have seen that one around a lot! I’ll have to check it out
The Catrice Sports FX (think that’s the name, definitely is sports anyway) is really really good. Right balance of sticky, pore minimizing, touch (and I mean a touch) of glow and is also a great price!
Ooo I do love a nice glow! and yeah from what I’ve seen Catrice is a nice quality and affordable brand, I’ll have to check this one out. Thanks!
YSL touch eclat is a favorite of mine. However for drug store, maybelline baby skin is pretty great.
I see that the YSL has a lot of great reviews, it was never on my radar before but now I’m really interested in checking it out, thank you!
Nyx pore filler - fills in pores beautifully but also makes my combo skin more oily throuought the day , dr.brandt pores no more - fills in the pores while also mattifying the skin , but quite expensive
The Tatcha primer is amazing
I have heard great things about it, but never took the plunge because I didn’t know if it was just hype or actually worth it. I definitely want to try it though!
They sell a mini now too.
I don't like my current primer and I am desperate to find one that suits my skin type! Most of the primers I have tried dry my skin out and leave my makeup patchy/separating, including:
-YSL touche eclat blur primer -e.l.f. poreless putty primer -e.l.f. blur drops
Any recommendations or favourites would be much appreciated!

I’ve experimented with various primers in the past, and recently, they’ve been causing flare-ups under my eye area, resulting in swelling and bruising. Interestingly, when I skip using primer, these issues don’t occur. Consequently, I’ve come to the conclusion that the primers might be the culprit. Could anyone offer some advice or suggestions on primers that are suitable for sensitive skin types?
I know primer is the base of all makeups so I kind of don’t want to skip this part of the makeup routine I do. 😮💨
The wet n wild primers are very hydrating and gentle. Absolutely love them. And super affordable
Great! Thank you for the recommendation! I’ll try this one out and see if it works well for me ☺️☺️☺️
Your welcome!! And just for specification. here’s my personal fav.
This isn't technically a primer, but aloe vera gel is generally very gentle and leaves a tacky finish, and I've heard some MUA mention that it can be used as primer. I use it as eye cream because it's the only thing even remotely moisturizing that doesn't sting. But I'm imagining it might work as eye primer as well, for you.
Oh interesting! I’ll try this out!
I use Embryolisse lait concentrate in the sensitive derivative. It doubles as moisturizer and primer.
best makeup primer for sensitive skin type
Key Considerations for Choosing a Makeup Primer for Sensitive Skin:
Ingredients: Look for primers that are free from common irritants such as fragrances, parabens, and alcohol. Opt for products with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, or hyaluronic acid.
Texture: Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that won’t clog pores. Gel-based or water-based primers are often gentler on sensitive skin.
Skin Type Compatibility: Ensure the primer is suitable for your specific skin type (oily, dry, combination) to avoid exacerbating any issues.
Hypoallergenic Formulas: Consider primers labeled as hypoallergenic, as they are formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions.
Patch Test: Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying a new product to your face to check for any adverse reactions.
Recommendations:
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer: This silicone-based primer is known for its smooth application and is free from parabens and fragrances, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer: Infused with coconut water and probiotics, this hydrating primer is gentle and helps soothe sensitive skin while providing a dewy finish.
e.l.f. Hydrating Face Primer: An affordable option that hydrates and preps the skin without harsh ingredients, making it a great choice for sensitive skin.
Tatcha The Silk Canvas: A luxurious option that not only primes but also protects the skin barrier, suitable for sensitive skin types.
Choosing the right primer can enhance your makeup application while keeping your skin comfortable and irritation-free.
