TL;DR Start with affordable, versatile products like Maybelline Fit Me foundation, ELF cosmetics, and Colourpop. Focus on basic items: foundation or BB cream, concealer, mascara, eyeshadow, blush, lipstick, and essential tools.
Basic Makeup Essentials
For beginners, it's generally recommended to start with a few key products that form the foundation of any makeup routine. These include a foundation or BB cream for a base, concealer for blemishes, mascara, eyeshadow, blush, and a lip product [1:1]
[2:2]
[4:1]. A neutral eyeshadow palette is often suggested as it allows for versatile looks
[4].
Affordable Brands and Products
Many users recommend starting with drugstore brands that offer quality at an affordable price. ELF cosmetics is frequently mentioned for its wide range of products and affordability [1:2]
[3:1]
[5:1]. Maybelline Fit Me foundation is highlighted for its variety of shades and buildable coverage
[2:1]. Colourpop is another popular choice due to its affordability and ease of use, especially their Super Shock shadows and blushes
[1:4]
[1:8].
Tools and Application Tips
Good brushes and sponges are crucial for applying makeup effectively. Investing in the best tools you can afford will make a noticeable difference in application [2:2]. Users also suggest starting with simple techniques and gradually experimenting with more complex looks as confidence grows
[1:6].
Skincare and Base Importance
A good skincare routine is emphasized as foundational to any makeup application. Ensuring your skin is well-prepared will enhance the overall effect of the makeup [4:2]. For those new to makeup, mid/light coverage foundations and high-quality concealers are recommended as they provide a natural look while offering coverage where needed
[4:2].
Experimentation and Personal Preference
It's important to experiment with different products to find what works best for your skin type and personal style. Starting with affordable options allows for experimentation without significant financial investment [1:3]
[3:2]. As you become more comfortable, you can explore higher-end products if desired
[1:10].
I’ve never been one to wear makeup, and when I did I only really used mascara and a bit of eye shadow. However, I’ve really wanted to get into it recently, but have no idea where to begin. Any recommendation or tips would be greatly appreciated! :))
I mean it heavily depends on your skin type and what style of makeup you like and really what kind of look you'd like to focus on. Also how much you like to spend, I like makeup from different lines with all sorts of different price points so I definitely do a mix of high-end and drugstore. If you want to give a little more info about your preferences I think that would definitely be helpful on getting better recommendations.
I really like ELF for almost everything and BH Cosmetics cosmetics for eyeshadow and blush. They are both pretty affordable. Wet n Wild is another affordable line that has very good products, I especially love their lip products, their brushes and the Incognito concealer. People rave about their bronzers, highlighters and there's a lot of love for their foundation too.
I'd avoid Colourpop unless you really love their aesthetic. IMO a lot of it is cheap gimmicky crap. But some people love their aesthetic so it really depends. I think BH Cosmetics is superior in quality by a lot.
I have a light complexion and plan to stick to more of a nude/neutral look for right now. I may look into other stuff later on. Also, kind of into a smoky eye look as well. I’ll definitely check out your recommendations! Thank you!
I would say start cheap, in eu we have drugstore essence ( i think you can get it in a lot of places). And that is not the best out there but its good to try things out. I find mabeline and L'Oréal expensive and i realy dont like them. I have spend way to much on brands like Chanel, urbay decay and stuff and it's good stuff but some things i just dont like and use. So i say try it cheap and play and have fun with makeup and when you know what u like and put on your face every day try to look for "better" or expensive stuff if u want.
That’s a smart idea! I definitely wouldn’t want to waste money on stuff I don’t end up liking. Thank you!!
Colourpop is the best! Super affordable and great beginner products
Agreed. In general, most of their products are nice quality and you can try out a variety of products without breaking the bank.
I find that their super shock products (shadows, blushes, and highlighters) are super easy to use.
Temptalia has reviews for a looot of Colourpop products, which I find has been super helpful in deciding what products I want to buy.
That’s good! I’m really hoping not to go too crazy for beginner products, so I’m glad to know that! Thank you for mentioning Temptalia. I quickly checked it out and think it’ll be super helpful to read through!
Ahh depends on how much you want to start wearing really! I prefer to do a full face with all the works, so my list of products to get may be different from others- but for a beginner I’d recommend sticking to the very basics. In my opinion, the very basics of makeup can be summed up in foundation/concealer, eyeshadow, mascara, blush, lipstick, and setting spray. Things like highlighter and contouring can come later, after practicing! If you decide to go the foundation route (some people prefer tinted moisturizers and bb creams and such tho), definitely get color matched at a makeup store!! The foundation you’ll be matched with at a store will probably be around $40-50 USD- I don’t know what your budget is but if that’s out of it then that’s fine! You don’t have to buy it- the color is just handy to know in my opinion because you can’t test drugstore/cheaper brands which can make it difficult to pick out a shade. For concealer, if you are doing foundation as well, always go a bit lighter than your foundation. You can use a brush to apply these products but I personally prefer to use a beauty blender. Please make sure the blender is damp before using it. Only specifying because I watched a friend apply her makeup with a dry sponge the other day and have been shocked since haha. I would also recommend a translucent setting powder as well to apply on top of concealer/foundation- it’s not really necessary but it can help the foundation/concealer last longer and help with creasing. You mentioned having done some eyeshadow before so I won’t go super into detail here- other than reminding you to blend it at the edges into your brow bone and out so it has a nice edge to it. You can try eyeliner if you’d like to but be warned- if you try liquid liner it takes a lot of practice to get good at it. For blush, apply it to the cheekbones until you are happy with it. Then add a little bit more. Lipstick a wondrous thing but if you get a bullet-tube-spinny lipstick then definitely get a lip liner as well to trace the edges of your lips. It helps get a good shape and keeps the lipstick from blurring at the edges. Lip liner isn’t really necessary with liquid lipstick, since it will dry to the lip, but it’s still helpful in learning what shape to make when applying lipstick of all kinds! Setting spray is a godsend for everyone to use- keeps your makeup in place all day.
I’m so sorry this is so long but I’m not done yet- so, price wise, even if you get mostly cheaper brands of makeup, you are looking at a haul of about $100 USD, probably a little bit more. It’s a lot but it’s less bad once you’re buying an item or two here and there to expand your products or replace something. As for brands, I’d personally recommend NYX and Colourpop- quality is good and prices are not bad at all for makeup! I’ve also only ever heard good things about Juvia’s place but haven’t gotten around to trying it myself yet haha. Elf is also pretty good! I would recommend staying away from morphe for the time being- their quality can be hit or miss and their eyeshadow palettes can be kinda overwhelming when you’re learning imo. For more expensive brands, I quite like urban decay and tarte personally. You cant really go wrong with the more expensive brands tho there are a few exceptions. Too faced’s quality is not great for its price, and I personally do not trust anything that has to do with Jaclyn hill because it feels like every other month something is wrong with her products and there’s a recall. Actually, just don’t trust beauty YouTube gurus in general. As for other brands I would not necessarily buy, Revolution is the only one that really stands out as well. The prices are good but the quality is just not it and there’s better cheap brands you can get with better quality.
I think that’s it. Other than that, just practice and have fun with it! My advice is just based off of my opinions and experiences so you may end up completely disagreeing with what I’ve said and that’s totally fine! Not everything that works for one person is gonna work for everyone, so that’s why practice and experimentation are so important! It’s amazing to watch yourself get better and learn new skills over time. I hope you enjoy learning! :)
Wow! Thank you so much for this reply! I greatly appreciate all the information you’ve shared, and can definitely use the tips and tricks you mentioned, especially about the beauty blender. I honestly have never heard that tip before about keeping it damp. I’ll definitely start out slow and work my way into more things down the line. Funny enough, I’ve always been nervous to try out things because I knew it entailed a lot of trial and error and learning over time, but now I’m actually super excited to start. Thank you again! :))
Don't buy an expensive mascara unless you just want the luxury feel of the packaging. They're never worth the price for the actual product. There's so many great drugstore and cheap mascaras that will do the job better than most expensive mascaras. I really like the lash princess mascara by essense, but just be aware it's SUPER smudgey if you're prone to that. I'm sure if you just look a bit into it you'll find people raving about lots drugstore mascaras and I hope you find one you like :))
It’s definitely my plan to check out drugstore options first, especially for mascara! I’ve never really been one to go for things based on the overall packaging. Thank you for the recommendation!
I got lash princess and I had this problem, do you know if the waterproof formula is any better?
Hi guys! I’m a complete beginner at using makeup. Actually, I’ve never actually used makeup before but now I want to start. Which products would you recommend for the complete beginner to start? Thank you!
-foundation that matches your skin (I’d go with light to medium coverage while gettin used to it) -concealer, either that matches your face or 1-2 shades lighter to brighten -loose or pressed powder -blush that mimics the color of your face flushing -eyebrow pencil (I like NYX pencils) -eyeshadow (CoverGirl has good beginners shadows) -eyeliner (Maybelline and CoverGirl make good cheap one) -mascara -lipstick (Revlon Super Lustrous is my go to) -good brushes (get the nicest you can afford, They can make a big difference)
Thank you so much!
This is going to be a long read. I hope this helps :)
For a beginner, I would recommend Maybelline Fit Me foundation. Theres a ton of shades so you should be able to find your shade. It's also medium coverage so you can get used to having foundation on, but if you want full then it's buildable. If you have oily skin or just want to lessen the creases, then you can also get the Fit Me powder. If you want a concealer then Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer is good. Maybelline also has a lot of mascaras, but everyone likes different mascara so find the one that you would like (ie waterproof, lengthening, thicken, etc). I would also recommend an eyeliner pencil or Nyx That's The Point eyeliner since I find it easier to work with a pen rather than a normal liquid liner. Nyx also has some good eyebrow pencils, but of you're not comfortable doing that or already have full brows, then I would recommend the Colourpop Brow Boss Gel to hold your eyebrows in place. The Physician's Formula Butter Highlighter and Bronzer are really nice and they actually smell like butter. The highlighter isn't too sparkly, but if you find it too much then you can diffuse it and the bronzer gives a nice sun kissed look. Nyx and colourpop also have some really good blushes at an affordable price. Both brands also have a really good formula for eyeshadows. For lipstick and lip gloss, I would recommend Nyx buttergloss (smells amazing) and the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream. These are both really comfortable to wear and have long lasting coverage. Finally, for tools, I would recommend investing in Morphe or Real Techniques. They are inexpensive brands, but work really well.
The reason I did not recommend a primer, contour, or a prep/setting spray is because I find it unnecessary, but if you're wanting to try those then I would recommend the Elf Poreless Putty Primer, Makeup Revolution Ultra Contour Palette, and Nyx Setting Spray.
Note* you do not need all of these products since it can be intimidating to go all out as a beginner, but you do you. Pick out the products that you'll feel most comfortable wearing and would use most often. Also, sorry that I couldn't give you more range and recommend more brands but these are ones that I really enjoy and have had good luck using.
This is sooooo helpful. Thank you!

I'm 13 and wanting to try something new. Any tips or anything I should buy that would be affordable?
Drugstore, ulta, and target/Walmart are great places to find affordable makeup. Do some searches around the internet for favorite cheap brands. Elf is beloved by many for having good products and it’s very affordable.
When I was starting out with make up, the first items I used were mascara, pressed face powder, and cheek color.
very appreciated!
Wells, when i was ur age i just started with some face powder, lip gloss with some tint on it, máscara and a bit of brow shadow to fill in My eyebrows. I remember if o put something more like pencil eyeliner or filling more My eyebrows id feel akward as i was not used to see My self like that. But it comes as a transition i Guess, as You get more into the make up world you'll want to try new things. Some Will work for u, some may not. But it's a interesting Journey to try. Good luck
thank youuuuuuu!
Buy lipstick - high end. Drugstore lipstick could stain your clothes and linen.
For face, go for Estée Lauder, stay in place double wear makeup. You won’t have to touch it up or ever get the curdling that happens when you sweat through cheap makeup. Just save yourself the trouble of wasting time and money being a Guinea pig for low quality brands.
BTW, don’t try Clinique or Bobbie Brown. It’s low quality and all about the brand.
I couldn't agree with the first thing more, I'd rather pay 21 for a long-lasting mac then a crappy dollar drugstore one that gets on everything and doesn't last
If you want to look more into it, check "beginner" in the subreddit, you're definitely not the first to ask so you can find loads of varied replies this way :) best of luck!
thank you!
>thank you!
You're welcome!
Maybelline fit me powder foundation is super beginner friendly
The ELF bite size line is as well-they have eyeshadow palettes, eyebrow palettes, and face palettes (blush and highlighter)
If u find like a tinted lip balm that is probably the easiest to start with. Any mascara would work, a pencil eyeliner is easiest to start with, and if it smears, put powder over it and it won’t.
I hope u have fun trying new makeup! 🙂
I hope I do 😹!
Here's what I'm thinking:
Foundation or BB Cream: A good base is essential.
Concealer: For covering up any blemishes or under-eye circles.
Mascara: Obviously!
Eyeshadow Palette: A neutral eyeshadow palette to start.
Blush: Cream blushes are easy to apply and blend, so I recommend beginners start there.
Lipstick or Lip Gloss: Choose a color that you love and that can be worn every day.
Highlighter: Adds a beautiful glow.
Brushes/Sponges: Good starter tools.
Did I miss anything? Any particular products recommended for someone new to makeup?
The biggest must-have products are a good skincare routine and a suitable base. Mid/light coverage foundation and a mid/high coverage concealer. Those are the fundamentals that should take up most of the budget (cause even the most incredible blush/eyeshadow/lipstick won’t look good on a bad base). Expensive mascara is the biggest scam in in makeup (Covergirl Lashblast is the GOAT). One and done shadows are a good place to start over a palette.
I would get a cheap tinted brow gel or a micro brow definer (with spoolie) as well. And start with drugstore makeup !
You need SPF for wrinkles/anti aging and your health.
my recommendations: get a really good hydrating primer, a foundation that works for your skin type and a setting powder or spray that gives you the finish and lasting time you want.
Merit is a *really* good simplistic brand for folks who are new to makeup or are too busy to invest a ton of time into it. they have a foundation/concealer combo stick that's nice and their cream shadows look good individually, so you don't have to buy a ton of colors. and their mascara isn't too heavy and comes off easily with a makeup wipe.
here's my essentials for a subtle, professional every day look (and of course you don't have to copy this to a tee)
(and I'm pale and cool toned)
Glossier SPF 50 Primer
NARS Light Reflecting Liquid Foundation
NARS Radiant Concealer
Mascara: Merit Tubing Mascara
Eyeshadow: Merit Cream Shadow in Studio or Midcentury
Blush: NARS Talc Free Blush in Amour
Lipstick: Kosas Wet Stick in Heatwave or MAC Glowplay in Favourite
Highlighter: I don't use highlighter for every day looks but I like MAC's Strobe creams.
Mattifying Powder: MAC Studio Fix Set + Blur powder
Finishing Spray: Urban Decay Allnighter spray
Rare Beauty has a lot of really pretty blushes and lipsticks too. if you want to be on the thriftier side, NYX, E.L.F. and Milani are my go to drugstore brands.
I'm having interests of buying makeup but I need to know which one is good for beginners
i started out with tinted chapstick and mascara, i still am kinda bad at makeup up now. 🤷🏼♂️ that’s how i started though
Almay concealer is the only makeup I use
Drug store makeup is really good. I use a lot of elf cosmetic products and milani makeup. BB or CC creams can be a good start since it’s light weight and not super expensive. Blush and bronzer are also good to have too. Just try to figure out the shades that suit you best
So I'm new to makeup and like was wondering what kinds of makeup products that you would recommend for beginners? I have no idea where to start lol. Also any good makeup YouTube channels or similar things to help me get started?
Search YouTube for drug store or inexpensive beginner makeup tutorials, and look for the ones who have a similar skin tone as you. Also, go for more natural looks, not glam. This helped me, but I still don’t like makeup very much
I would recommend starting with a lipgloss, that is usually the best first step for people. The next I would say is some face makeup, like a small concealer or power foundation, I say powder to use on its own (you usually use both liquid and powder) because liquids are usually quiet expensive. After that I'd say some eyeshadow or more specifics in the face department, bronzer, contour, etc. This advice has worked for me and others around me but everyone is different so do what's best for you!!!! As for YouTubers, my favourite makeup youtuber is JUDY. She does a lot of content with a popular brand called colourpop, she also has amazing tutorials. Her tutorials are really great if you want to follow along or just for entertainment. She is a relatively small youtuber and does not get involved with all of the stupid drama bs like a lot of beauty YouTubers (James Charles, etc.)
I haven't tried makeup yet. Did once or twice(done by my friends for clg event). I now want to own some products and use them whenever required. So please help me with some beginners friendly products and brands .
Here are the reccos for makeup : Using good layer of moisturizer can sometimes not require primer . If you have not acne prone or textured skin then skip primer for daily basis (use good moisturizer as a primer , some sunscreens also give a smooth base ) if not use elf, maybelline , now either you can use skin tints , foundation or concealer depending how much coverage you want , for everyday use skin tints are good ( all of it can be purchased from maybelline , the small tube of foundation is probably less than 300 ) , blush wet and wild , eyeliner (blue heaven/lakme) , mascara maybelline , eyeshadow nykaa mars Swiss beauty lipstick (nykaa /lakme/maybelline) , lip/cheek tint etude house. I don’t generally use loose powder , but if you want to use any local loose powder for saving budget works just as well . Gloss elf.and this is all good quality drugstore products without damaging your skin . Feel free to add and subtract accordingly
Thank you so much 😊. Also the brand suggestions will help me in my search 🥹
you can invest in a good blush- maybe a tint - i use one from etude house got it for around 400 rupees, a good concealer maybe from swiss beauty or kay (depending on the budget even maybelline) , umm maybe a kajal or eyeliner stick and a good lip shade (many many available)
Okay. Thank you for the tips 😊. I have bought an insight blush and have taken sunnies face lipstick from my mum👀. Gonna do the search for other things
OP, were the sunnies lipstick from Kult? If so, keep an eye out for any mold 😵💫😵💫
Good luck on ur makeup journey - build gradually with lots of research before actually buying products. Also in case it interests you, I am linking my previous compilation post from ima sub that has many collective links ...you don't need to go through everything rn but just as a reference point for future as it covers a number of topics in post as well in comments

You summarised it perfectly, OP you can also buy a good eyelash curler if you don’t want to use mascara on daily basis.
Can I directly just roll my lashes with it or i need to apply any product?
Mascara toooo
Will it not cause hair from my eyelashes fall?

Thank you ✨
hi everyone. im a 22F and a black girl and wanted to know which products would be good to start off with. i, unfortunately, did not start getting into makeup seriously until very recently so the awkward makeup phase i’m sure everyone experienced as kids/teens is now something i’m going through, haha. but to sort of “lessen” that awkwardness, i wanted to come here and seek some advice. what i do know is that i would prefer a more natural look that sort of gives off “im wearing makeup but you cant tell” vibes. and i’ve also learned that i like REALLY eyeliner and blush (i like having rosy cheeks!) so be sure to drop your fav products for those! any more tips for beginners in terms of products or application is definitely welcomed. additionally, i also wanted to ask if i should be starting out with drug store makeup and immediately skip to more high end brand products?
thank you in advance!! sorry if this has been asked before!!
My best advice is to get color matched at Sephora, then get a sample of a few of their foundations to try out. I love Haus Labs foundation! But by getting a good match you can enter it online to find your shade in a lot of different foundations.
I'd use a tinted moisturizer to even your skin tone without adding a lot of coverage and highlighting texture so it'll look more natural. I use the Colourpop Pretty Fresh tinted moisturizer which you can get from Ulta for $14.
For concealer I love NYX's serum concealer since it's so lightweight feeling and looks so natural on the skin. I sometimes use that on it's own to spot conceal, in which case I get it in the shade closest to my natural skin tone instead of brighter like I normally do to lighten my undereyes.
I'd recommend a loose powder and a small brush to lightly set it on your foundation and undereyes. Using a brush will keep it looking naturally and will avoid it looking cakey. Wet n Wild has great ones for less than $10 at CVS, Walmart, Ulta, or Amazon.
Blush, girl I love colorful blushes, and I find Juvia's Place has some of the best pigmented ones BUT you have to apply them very lightly as the pigment can be very overpowering if you apply too much at once. Elf has great liquid and powder blushes too! Very pigmented and inexpensive.
If you wanna use bronzer or contour (I would just to put some warmth back to your skin after applying foundation) then I'd use maybe a Juvia's Place one since they're also pigmented and easily blendable. Fenty has great ones too!
NYX's waterproof eyeliner is great and comes in quite a few different shades if you want to do something fun every now and then or have it look neutral like brown or black.
Lips, if you want it to look more natural, I'd say use a lip oil just to add very light pigment, shine, and moisture to your lips. I use the ELF ones and they're super comfy!
Sorry for the essay lmao, but I hope some of these suggestions help! Remember also with makeup, just wear what makes you feel good. Doesn't need to be high end or fancy to work properly :)
im still fairly new to this so it would be nice to get some suggestions , im open to discuss any recommendations that you guys leave down below . ive been having my makeup down for me , but recently ive been getting more in the routine of doing it myself whenever no ones available to do it for me , and i figure ive been doing a fairly decent job , but i would love some suggestions as far as what you guys feel are up to reasonable standard in terms of quality for me .
Elf and Maybelline. Elf has a lot of good products that got popular, and they have a range of products where they try replicating some of the higher end products but making them more affordable. And they have a LOT to offer. Maybelline is great too. I’d opt for the sky high waterproof mascara and hyper easy eyeliner, both have worked well for me.
i would recommend both elf and essence but the nyx cant stop wont stop foundation is a must-have for me, so maybe consider looking at some nyx products too 🫶
elf , essence , and nyx are on my radar ✍🏻
Elf, Wet and Wild and L’Oreal
elf, hands down. Great products, reasonable prices.
ive heard many great things about elf , this may be the one
Elf, Nyx, Ulta Beauty. I'm deep into make up and still use Ulta Beauty and Nyx. I also have a good eyeshadow pallette recommendation. The colors are vibrant and the pallette is cheap. I also recommend the Nyx Bare With Me setting spray as I can literally boo-hoo cry and my eyeshadow looks untouched lmao.
I’m femme presenting but never really did makeup when I was younger besides basic stage makeup and even then I mostly was in male roles so very different makeup looks. I’m about to start drag and there’s a show in about three weeks. I couldn’t be more excited. The thing is I have absolutely no makeup at all lol. The lovely people in the club are more than willing to help me a bit (but any tips y’all have are appreciated too!!) but I obviously would rather get some of my own makeup instead of using other peoples. I was going to head to ulta or somewhere and just get a bunch of basic stuff but I don’t really know where to start/I feel like I’m going to get the wrong things. Any help is super appreciated!!

I started wearing makeup by watching youtube videos and just going with what looks I liked on other people. My advice is to not commit to a style. Try a few neutral looks, and maybe play a bit with bolder colors if you want. You might be surprised at what you end up liking, I know I was.
Start with drugstore products. Don't spring for expensive stuff until you've played around a bit and know what you really like. Youtube reviews on any specific product you might be thinking of can be your friend.
Good luck!
best makeup products for beginners
Key Considerations for Beginners in Makeup:
Foundation: Choose a lightweight, buildable foundation or a tinted moisturizer for a natural look. Brands like Maybelline Fit Me or L'Oréal True Match are great options.
Concealer: A good concealer can help cover blemishes and dark circles. Look for a creamy formula that matches your skin tone, such as the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer.
Blush: A cream blush is easier to apply and blend for beginners. Try a shade that complements your skin tone, like the Glossier Cloud Paint.
Eyeshadow: A neutral eyeshadow palette with a mix of matte and shimmer shades is versatile. The Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette is a great starter option.
Mascara: A good mascara can enhance your eyes without much effort. The Maybelline Lash Sensational is a popular choice for volume and length.
Lip Color: Start with a tinted lip balm or a lip gloss for a natural look. Brands like Burt's Bees or NYX offer great options.
Tools: Invest in a few essential brushes (foundation brush, blending brush, and a blush brush) and a beauty sponge for application.
Recommendation: Start with a basic makeup kit that includes a foundation, concealer, blush, eyeshadow palette, mascara, and lip color. This will give you the flexibility to experiment without overwhelming you. Brands like e.l.f. and ColourPop offer affordable and quality products that are perfect for beginners. Remember to practice and have fun with your makeup!
