How to Fix Common Makeup Mistakes

Eyebrow and Eyeliner Application

One frequent mistake beginners make is applying eyebrow makeup too heavily or using the wrong color, resulting in a blocky appearance rather than a natural feathered look [1:1]. For eyeliner, not everyone can pull off black liquid eyeliner; sometimes a softer, smudged look is more flattering [1:1]. If your eyeliner goes on too thick or wobbly, use a Q-tip with eye cream to gently remove excess without disturbing the rest of your makeup [5:2].

Foundation and Contouring

Choosing the right foundation shade is crucial, as it forms the base for all other makeup. A foundation shade adjuster can be helpful for matching your skin tone throughout different seasons [1:9]. When contouring, avoid harsh lines; instead, blend to create a gradient effect that mimics natural shadows [1:4]. If blush or bronzer looks muddy, lightly blend the edges with face powder or a brightening powder to clean up the area [5:2].

Product Compatibility and Layering

Makeup separation can occur when products have incompatible bases, such as mixing oil-based and water-based products [2:3]. Ensure your skincare and makeup products are compatible, and allow each layer to absorb fully before applying the next [2:6]. Use tapping motions rather than swiping to prevent dragging and ruining the layers beneath [2:5].

Skin Preparation and Exfoliation

Proper skin preparation is essential for smooth makeup application. Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells, and ensure your skin is well-moisturized [3:1]. Changes in weather can affect skin texture, so adjust your skincare routine accordingly [3:9]. Avoid over-exfoliating, as it can lead to dryness and peeling [3:5].

Quick Fixes for Makeup Errors

For quick fixes, a damp beauty blender with a small amount of foundation can help lighten or correct areas like blush or bronzer [5:1]. Dry makeup sponges can act as erasers to remove mistakes without starting over [5:3]. For mascara mishaps, let it dry completely before removing with a cotton bud to avoid smearing [5:4].

Question on this one in regards to contouring. I see when people put on the dark shades on the jawline and it creates the look, but it's also a bit obvious. Is that just incorrect contouring, or is this rule maybe not as hard and fast as it used to be?

It could be anything from the wrong color, some people go too brown instead of ashy, a shadow makes darker but it doesn't change the color of your skin. Basically you need to find the shadow color of your skin and that's a hard one because foundation alone is one hell of a task.

Then there's the people that got lucky on finding their product but have no idea how to use or blend it. Shade isn't hard lines it's a gradiant, the further away from the sun means it gets darker. Also contouring is not just shading. It's also playing with brows and pinks. Wayne goss has a perfect video on how to do a slightly sunburned look. Makes it look like you just got of the beacb

Well, with all these things it's no-one's place to criticize if you're like, "Yep, I love me a bold eyebrow and that is my Thing!!" I think sometimes we see them here and it's more that the person hasn't learned to critique their own choices and ask if they are achieving their style goals with this or that look.

I know I'm having a really hard time finding ways to warm up my own skin after I apply foundation to reduce redness. You'd think I could look in a mirror and say, 'Yes, this color of blush, this amount, placed here, great!" but I can't. I just can't see objectively. One of these days soon I'll find the courage to post on here and ask for feedback. The community here is really pretty nice about it.

It’s all good. There are exceptions to every rule. If you can rock a look, then work it. Some people might say my daily lipstick is too red and bold for daytime/everyday activities, but screw it. I feel naked without it.

I agree with you, and this is a tough one until you really have enough experience to judge color or unless you get lucky with good advice before buying. Once you find the right foundation color half the battle is won!

IMO a foundation shade adjuster is almost a must have. At least it is for me. Being able to use the foundation at summer and at winter but still having perfect shade for the time being

Too heavy a hand on eyebrows-- too much makeup applied, the wrong color of makeup, applying eyebrow makeup as a block instead of feathering it in.

Not everyone can wear black liquid eyeliner around their eyes. Many of us need next to no darkening under our eyes, or we need a softer smudged look.

Ugh I can't seem to get the eyebrow right. I look like I have only half an eyebrow on each side. If you do look closely at my face, the parts that look invisible have hairs that are essentially growing in a sparse circle. I also can't seem to get it in the right shape or symmetrical. Any tips?

I have the same half eye brow problem. The outer half of my brows are totally thin and blonde, and I’m not even a blonde. The inner half is light brunette, but at least visible. Any tips?

Totally it’s sooo important to know what looks you can and can’t pull off. I, for example, can’t pull off pink lips. It sucks because I love bold lips, and I’ve always wished I could do a Barbie pink or even Candy pink lip, but I can’t. I’m also agreed on the brows. Eyebrows shouldn’t look stylized or made up. They really always should look natural. Save the creativity for eyes and lips and whatnot.

use eyeshadow primer or your shadow may look drastically different than swatches (as in unpigmented as fuck)

Wet your beautyblemder/egg shape sponge. Squeeze it to get excess moisture out. Then use it to blend damp.

How do I get my makeup to stop separating like this?

Basically just the title. I did my makeup for an event, came home like 3 hours later and it looked like this, if you zoom in it’s more obvious. Meanwhile I’ve seen girls on social media wear their makeup for a ridiculous amount of time like 12 hrs or something, and it still looks good lol. Idk what I’m doing wrong bc I use both powder, setting spray, and fixing spray.

Setting spray: e.l.f. Stay All Night Micro-Fine Setting Mist

Fixing spray: Revolution Oil Control Fixing Spray

Powder: Covergirl Clean Invisible Loose Powder

Also yes I know my face is a different shade than my neck/chest lol, I need to get colour correctors but my budget is low atm

Make sure the base of your moisturiser formula and makeup products are compatible. Or use primer

1 upvotes on reddit
Unaligned_Ant_ · 5 months ago

Sometimes this happens when the base is different in the primer and the foundation. For example the foundation is oil based, but the primer is water based- when you first put it on it might look even from the emulsion of application onto the warm skin, but over time these opposing bases start to push and pull away from each other, creating this splotchy blotchy appearance after some time of wear. It can happen to different degrees and at different times depending on which types of bases you mix and which ones go on first. There's also like silicone and some other types of bases I can't think of, but try to do some research into this, because I can't perfectly explain all the details, but it may help you figure out which products can be used with other products.

1 upvotes on reddit
whatstoknow112 · 5 months ago

Wait 5 mins every time to put a new product of for skin care, if you apply primer wait 5 mins too. Make sure if you using water based that all your crème makeup is water base or if you use silicone it’s the all the same as well

6 upvotes on reddit
SecretBunni · 5 months ago

This would be my advice as well. You wouldn't put all those things on all at once and if you don't let them do their job that's what you're doing. Don't just sit down and do your makeup from start to finish. Do your skin care, let that moisturizer sink in while you make your coffee or whatever primer, foundation let that warm up remove excess before powder. And don't be afraid of that setting spray. It not just a spritz.

2 upvotes on reddit

I agree. Skin care needs the proper time to penetrate your skin. To much build up cause separation and peeling because there to much on the face at once .

I’m not sure what products you use for skincare or primer but I went thru a crisis also where my skin just started changing and no product would work, eventually I figured it out for me at least. I stick with a milky toner and use the Cocokind ceramide barrier serum and for primer I always use elf power grip and of course a hydrating foundation ! Good lucky girl !

Do you wear sunscreen? Do you sun bathe or go tanning by any chance? Do you use harsh actives?

I ask because: -Not wearing sunscreen and exposure to the sun may contribute to drier skin and therefore cause peeling which can contribute to this. -Retinoids can cause peeling and drying actives like BHA.

Your skin just looks like there’s skin sitting on the surface layer that just needs to be exfoliated and moisturized. But also, over exfoliating can cause the skin to peel as well. So it’s always best not to overdue it.

3 upvotes on reddit
mayzeeJ · OP · 6 months ago

i had a peel about two weeks ago and have been using BHA and Medik8 Retinal, maybe i’m over exfoliating and that’s could be causing it then. I use supergoop glow screen everyday for spf !

1 upvotes on reddit
ET_PhoneHome0303 · 6 months ago

Oh yes! That could certainly be it! Do you use the BHA daily? I know people say it’s safe to use BHA daily but IMO (and experience), unless you have super oily skin, using it daily (unless in a wash off form) can cause major dryness and irritation and then the makeup just doesn’t lay as nicely. Especially if being used in conjunction with retinal throughout the week. I have combo skin and was getting SICK and TIRED of my skin peeling throughout the day no matter how thoroughly I hydrated and moisturized. I too am an avid makeup wearer and it’s the worst when skin looks dry under makeup throughout the day. So I scaled back to using BHA in a wash off form, exfoliating like once a week with an AHA since AHA’s are more moisturizing, and using my Tretinoin only like 3 times a week. That’s had a dramatic improvement on my skin health. It no longer peels and is smoother under makeup!

I had a similar problem after I turned 30, that my skin was drier and more textured and making base makeup sit strangely on my face.

I added a smoothing and plumping essence and a more occlusive moisturiser to my routine and that helped a lot!

And sometimes when seasons change the skin behaves differently as well.

there has been quite a change in weather where i live, i’m wondering if it’s that! which essence and moisturiser have you been liking? :) xx

2 upvotes on reddit

I use REN Smooth, Prep & Plump Essence and NIVEA Soft Cream, the one in the white packaging.

At night, I switch out the essence for a alcohol-free aloe vera gel (mine is from Beauty Formulas), and then the NIVEA on top of it.

I find that it makes a difference to apply each layer and really pat it in until it’s less wet and more tacky. The products have more mileage that well. It’s a technique I borrowed from Korean skincare. I hope that helps x

Edit: I’m Combo skin. x

If there are big issues like that - pilling, wrong shade - right from the get go, I return the product if possible. I don't want to disrupt my whole skincare and makeup routine to get a new product to work.

If it's past the return window, then I pass the product along to a friend if they want it, or discard. Life is too short to force yourself to use products that are unflattering or don't bring you joy IMO.

For pilling: check your skincare products. I have some skincare products I can only use at night because they don’t sit right with my foundation.

For example I have a Peach and Lily glass skin serum that makes my foundation do some crazy things.

For patchy: it could just be the foundation itself, as in you might have to shake it before using. However it could also be just a bad foundation.

For example: I have the Bobbi Brown skin tint and that is somehow the most patchy god awful skin tint I have ever used no matter what I do.

Pilling in my experience is product combination. See if you can apply it to bare skin without pilling. If you can, you can play around other products that play better together.

1 upvotes on reddit
awaywardgoat · 8 months ago

so I've recently discovered that the pretty fresh tinted moisturizer from ColourPop that I have is too dark for me (I'm pale and the shade range for these is not good) combine it within that is very light and it kind of gives you an intermediary shade that works. If a product is piling it could be due to a mismatch between what you have as a base and the product itself. try to not combine silicone based makeup (and make sure whatever -methicones are in it match) with water-based makeup. or maybe try using a silicone-based base if you can't apply makeup over bare skin without it pilling or something.

Q-tips/cotton buds are a life saver.

For things around the eyes, I use eye cream vs makeup remover. Eye cream usually is emollient enough to remove makeup but absorbs quick enough to apply makeup over top. Where makeup remover can sit on top of the skin and make it kind of weird to apply makeup on top of.

For bronzer/blush looming muddy, I like to blend out the edges with my face powder or a brightening powder to kinda clean up around the areas that need to be “brighter”. It helps to make things less muddled.

5 upvotes on reddit
M
miso__soop · 2 years ago

For the most part, a tiny bit of foundation on a damp beauty blender can fix a lot of things (especially before you’ve applied powder). This can lighten the look of blush/bronzer without completely painting over. For the most “diffused” look, apply a bit of foundation to the back of your hand, dab it 5-10 times with the beauty blender to pick up a bit of product, then lightly apply to the face. This way you don’t end up with a stripe or big dot of foundation.

For eyeshadow, I’ll honestly just wipe the eyeshadow off with a makeup wipe, dry it off, then redo my base with a little foundation. If it’s a tiny mistake, a super thin brush + concealer will usually be enough.

18 upvotes on reddit
sammyjoeturd · OP · 2 years ago

Thanks! Will this work with a powder blush and bronzer?

2 upvotes on reddit
Dulcinea18 · 2 years ago

I like to use my foundation brush that has a little base on it to fix blush and bronzer mistakes. A dry makeup sponge(like a BeautyBlender) can act like a dry eraser if I need to get makeup off and re-angle something. For eyeliner, “mapping” your line with a concealer first helps. You can decide your shape and draw over it with eyeliner. You can even use a skin tone pencil to do it. That’s how I learned eyeliner.

2 upvotes on reddit
M
miso__soop · 2 years ago

It can, but things will not blend as easily when putting a liquid or cream over powder. Make sure the foundation on your beauty blender is super diffused and that you only have the tiniest amount or you might end up with a noticeable patch of foundation where your blush is.

Also don’t start in the center of your blush/bronzer area, start around the perimeter and work your way in if that makes sense.

When that mascara wand gets loose and mars your face or freshly applied eyeshadow, let it dry. Then take a cotton bud and wipe it off. If you try to do that while it's wet, it will smear everywhere.

I’d say a couple things:

  1. Start with very little blush and bronzer. Bronzer could be the main culprit (especially if you’re fair like me).
  2. For eyeliner, keep some q-tips handy! That was always my favorite way to clean up!
  3. I always recommend setting your eyeshadow base with a powder close to your skin tone and alwaysssss go in with less product than you think until you get the hang of it :)

Hope this helps!

I have no idea, but I have tried a MILLION products to help this issue because it happens all around my under eye area all the way across my face. I don’t wear foundation, only concealer, blush, and a powder over top then setting spray. I have been experimenting with serums, moisturizers, and primers underneath but this alwayssss happens no matter what I use. Below is the product routine I used today, in order: Skin prep

  • Hyaluronic acid serum -Byoma Moisturizing Gel Cream (the pink one) -elf skin suntouchable whoa glow 30spf Makeup -tarte maracuja creaseless concealer, shade 10N (the lightest) -NARS liquid blush, shade Orgasm -Essence 16h cover & last powder foundation, shade 01 porcelain -Essence princess false lash effect mascara -ended with elf dewy coconut setting mist

Then my makeup looks like this in 2 hours. What gives?

I know it sounds weird, but loading up on skin prep with oils, serums, or moisturizer may be the issue. Not all skincare ingredients play well with makeup.

I would suggest doing your skin prep the night before, let everything absorb into your skin overnight, and just use a very light, not oil-based moisterizer before your makeup if you must.

After you apply your SPF, go do something else for 15 minutes or however long it takes for it to dry down and absorb before applying make up.

I have a huge problem with accepting that I’m more neutral-warm than warm: I always think that I’m tanner and bronzier than I actually am. This has resulted in a multitude of foundation- and concealer-matching disasters, warm-neutral eye looks that end up looking straight up warm without the neutral part, and various other colour matching shenanigans.

I wear humongous glasses, which means I can apply blush and bronzer for hours and still won’t have them show up in person. On days when I wear contacts, this tendency has generated many, many horrified realisations.

And then there is the fact that I still tend to stab my eyes with my mascara wand at least once a week.

Are you me??? Someone here told me a few days ago that I might also be neutral-warm. I searched a couple thing at Ulta and holy shit I guess I am more neutral? But habits are hard to break and whenever I look at foundation it concealer my eyes go directly to "tan" or some variation of "golden ___"

My blush is always at the wrong fucking angle.

Mine ends up a bit more all over the place than expected and intended a lot of the time. So I just smear it even more so it's less accidental-looking and make the middle of the apples darker, make sure to have it go over the nose bridge and just dot around the edges with my sponge so it's blended seamlessly in a gradient. Bam, it looks like I've just romantically ran towards you at the beach. Minus the panting. Just young, fit and healthy, and très English Rose. Totally on purpose.

My blush just ends up in the same place no matter where I try to put it. It just gravitates to the same spot. I've accepted it now.

My gauge of right angle is to kinda use blush as a bronzer and dance it across the contour line

Yeah I get it on my cheek somewhere and then use my hand to blend it where it needs to be.

You know how when you hear a recording of your voice and it sounds weird and wrong if you aren’t used to it?

I’m like that with makeup.

What I think I’m saying doesn’t quite match what I’m putting out there.

What makeup mistakes do you often see irl?

Posted by festivewhitegirl · in r/muacjdiscussion · 6 years ago

I was inspired to spark this discussion after I saw a picture of myself from three years ago in which my nose contour was two unblended bronzer lines. Like girl what was I thinking? And what was everyone else thinking of my sparkly orange bone structure?

That leads me to the question, what makeup mistakes do you often see?

Enormous untrimmed false lashes. It's not that I see a ton of false lashes in general, but there's a surprising amount of teenagers/young women who wear them as part of their daily look (a lot of times it's just heavy foundation, highlighter, brows, and giant lashes, too, which is...interesting). I'd say a solid 50-75% are too long and end up drooping at the corners. And they're often like full-blown drag lashes, so it's super noticeable.

Also, the thick line of black eyeliner only on the lower lashline. That one's more of a preference and not so much a mistake, but it's really common among slightly older women. I personally find it really unflattering, but I'm sure some people find the bright colored eyeshadow I wear unflattering, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

omg I never really took note of it, but lash mistakes are super common! I feel like they’re always too long when we I see them lol. the black liner bothers me also, it just totally brings down the whole face.

I really don’t understand why folks aren’t trimming their eyelashes

After I apply I diffuse it with some powder (translucent or your normal face powder or even blush if it's a cheek highlight) which softens it up a lot for me. Even going over it with a clean brush helps too.

This is general but people assuming how beauty bloggers do their makeup will suit them. I understand it’s easily to fall in the trap but caked on makeup does not look the same without bright lights and special cameras.

Definitely see this frequently, especially with Instagram makeup. I’ve definitely fallen into that mindset, I think once you start getting comfortable with makeup and understanding facial structure it definitely changes the game.

Unblended eyeshadow, eyeliner that is nowhere near the lash line.

How should eyeshadow be blended? Because I see a lot of looks on here where people use tape and end the sides of their eyeshadows in a straight line along their eyeliner wing

I don’t consider using tape as leaving your eyeshadow unblended. To me, the line kind of acts in a similar way as winged eyeliner. It kind of is just another way of elongating your eye. When I say unblended, I mean when there is a very stark and dark crease that ends very abruptly near the brow.

Apply it in circular motions around where you want to glow - applying in a straight line gives you a stripe and applying in circles diffuses it.

That’s the main reason why I won’t get lash extensions, they look nice in dramatic makeup but tooooo much for everyday wear.

Yep. Even with super experienced makeup users, this is what I notice the most often. The rest of the makeup is often flawless, too.

What to do when you’ve put too much makeup on but have no time to redo it…

Posted by rosequartzal · in r/MakeupAddiction · 14 days ago

In general, my daily makeup comes out decent. There are some days, however, when I go crazy with the contour or blush and soon enough, I realize I have too much on but have ten minutes until I have to leave.

I’ve tried to remedy it when it happens with dewy setting sprays, especially because I love the dewy natural look, but they hardly help. Does anyone have a trick for when you realize you put too much makeup on (usually contour, bronzer or blush) but have no time to redo it?

I’m generally happy with my makeup products, but I use: TJ’s sunscreen, Essence foundation stick just around eyes and center of my face; Maybelline Age Rewind concealer under eyes and around nose; Maybelline Fit Me pressed powder under eyes, on nose, around nose, on forehead and chin; a random cool toned contour off Amazon that’s brand has worn off the front but I like; Tarte Park Ave Princess bronzer; the peachy bronzer from a Benefit Christmas set I got a few years ago, I don’t know the name or what year I got it; Milani Dewy setting spray which is a new purchase and I hate so far, I’m giving it one more chance before I return it and go back to the wet n wild dewy setting spray.

Any help!!?? Thank you!

I use setting powder or powder foundation with a fluffy brush to dull excess colour. If it’s too flat I’ll add a little subtle highlighter and usually that fixes things.

I remove it all before i can regret it and then slap on some moisturizer and suncreen and leave the house as quickly as i can before i can change my mind

I just put more foundation on on top to tone it down (effectively underpainting with an extra step) but I use high coverage foundations.

I would take a clean, fluffy brush and try to blend out the face products as much as possible. Or use a big, fluffy brush with a skin tone powder to try and diffuse the pigment a little. Do this before setting it with any kind of spray.

Get a very large, fluffy, rounded brush. The kind that's used to apply powder all over.

Keep the brush clean and use it to basically pound over any spots where you overapplied product. It helps pound away the excess and blur and sheer everything out! Learned this trick from a friend not too long ago and it's been a real lifesaver when I OD on blush or highlight in particular!

how to fix common makeup mistakes

Here are some common makeup mistakes and how to fix them:

  1. Too Much Foundation:

    • Fix: Use a damp makeup sponge to blend out excess foundation. If it's too thick, consider mixing it with a moisturizer for a lighter finish.
  2. Wrong Shade of Foundation:

    • Fix: Test foundation shades on your jawline in natural light. If you’ve already purchased the wrong shade, try mixing it with a lighter or darker foundation to achieve a better match.
  3. Overdrawn Eyebrows:

    • Fix: Use a spoolie brush to soften harsh lines. You can also apply a little concealer around the brows to clean up the edges.
  4. Clumpy Mascara:

    • Fix: Wipe the wand with a tissue before applying. If it’s already clumpy, use a clean spoolie to separate the lashes.
  5. Too Much Blush:

    • Fix: Blend it out with a clean brush or use a translucent powder to tone it down. Start with a small amount next time and build up gradually.
  6. Eyeliner Mistakes:

    • Fix: If your eyeliner is uneven, use a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover to clean up the edges. For a softer look, smudge it with a brush.
  7. Lipstick on Teeth:

    • Fix: After applying lipstick, place your finger in your mouth and pull it out to remove excess product. Alternatively, use a tissue to blot your lips.

Recommendation: Always practice good makeup hygiene by using clean brushes and tools, and consider investing in a makeup setting spray to help your look last longer and reduce the chances of common mistakes.
