TL;DR
Urban Decay All Nighter
Urban Decay's All Nighter setting spray is frequently mentioned as a top choice due to its ability to keep makeup intact in various conditions, including hot tubs and rain [5:6]. It's known for its longevity, with users reporting that their makeup remains flawless even after sleeping in it
[5:9]. Despite being on the pricier side, many find it worth the investment for its reliability
[2:1],
[5:3].
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray
Charlotte Tilbury's setting spray is another favorite, especially for those with dry skin [4:3]. Users praise its performance and consider it superior to other options they've tried
[2:4]. This spray is often recommended alongside Urban Decay's All Nighter as a high-quality alternative
[2:1].
Milani Make It Last
Milani Make It Last is highlighted for its affordability and effectiveness. Users have reported that it keeps makeup intact throughout long days and in challenging weather conditions, such as Florida heat [3:2],
[3:4]. Its versatility across different skin types makes it a popular choice
[1:1].
Morphe Continuous Mist
The Morphe Continuous Mist is appreciated for its continuous spray mechanism, which provides a smooth and even application [5:4]. While some users have noted issues with its scent, others find it effective in reducing powderiness and maintaining makeup throughout the night
[5:2],
[5:3].
Additional Considerations
For those seeking alternatives, MAC Fix+ is noted for its hydrating properties but is not strictly a setting spray [4:2]. NYX Matte Setting Spray is recognized as a budget-friendly option that performs well
[3:3],
[5:12]. Additionally, Makeup Revolution's hyaluronic fix is suggested for those looking for hydration at a lower price point
[5:11].
In the past I’ve had All Nighter by Urban Decay, and Hangover by Too Faced, I seem to remember preferring Hangover. But it’s been a while since I had a setting spray and wondered if anyone had any big recommendations?
Makeup Revolution infinite matte setting spray
Charlotte Tilbury Setting Spray
Urban Decay all nighter
As a make up artist, I’m not a big fan of setting sprays but there are ones that work to help make your make up stay on. These are the ones that have alcohol higher up on the ingredient list because it creates a seal on the face and it seals the make up in. The thing that works best if you really need your make up to stay in place is hairspray but I don’t recommend doing that every day because that’s not good for your skin. Lol
PUR Minerals Lit Mist (I believe they have matte version too) is undefeated in my book. And cruelty free!
I like Skindinavia.
Milani Make It Last is legit one of the best setting sprays I've ever used, and it's affordable! It really does a great job of locking your makeup in all day. They have different options for different skin types, too!
My makeup always smudges and goes on everything I touch! help! Right now, I'm using Nyx Long lasting matte spray and, for example, when I talk on the phone, my case in covered in foundation after. Is there a spray that will really keep things in place or am I doing something wrong or expecting too much of a setting spray?
Do you have oily, dry, normal or combination skin ? It can also helps us to know what advice to give.
Do you use liquid, stick or powder foundation ? Do you use powder after applying moist products to "lock" them ? Do you use primer for the foundation, and the eyeshadows ? Primers really helps for eyeshadows for my oily lids. For the mascara, do you use waterproof or not ? (I don't use waterproof, and my mascara tends to smudge a little bit at the top, under my eyebrows thanks to my hooded eyes, but I really like my mascara, and it doesn"t exists in waterproof).
I have oily skin (now more combination thanks to skincare), but I user UD All Nighter BEFORE putting on make-up (following Robert Welsh advice on how to prep oily skin for make-up), and I use it also after.
I think I have kind of oily skin. I've never used a primer. Ive always used liquid foundation and set with a powder. I don't use water proof either, but I don't usually have any issues there. Just with my foundation (and sometimes my liner). I just want to be able answer my phone without it being the same color as my face after lmao So you putting the setting spray FIRST? Before anything else, like a primer?
Yes and no. I use it before primer to lock sebum from my oily skin. If you don't have oily skin, it's not a useful tip.
But, yes, you should try a setting spray, the classic OG is the UD All Nighter, I think you can find it in mini, or in holiday pack if you don't want to invest in a full size one.
It can also depends if you're living in a hot country, dry, humid, etc. And, it can also be a reaction between your skincare product and your foundation. Your skincare can break-up your foundation too.
Yeah, it's a nightmare to find the right stuff ! I hope you'll find a solution to your problem !
Agree that Charlotte Tilbury has the best one. I’ve tried a bunch and no other comes close.
urban decay all nighter or the milani make it last
Thank you I'll try them out

Charlotte Tilbury setting spray is my holy grail. Urban decay all nighter is my lower priced alternative.
alright, so ill start off with UD than lol thank you!
I’ve gone through life never using a setting spray. Recently, having more issues with makeup wiping off totally on mask at work. I have typically oily skin, acne. Do you have a setting spray recommendation that you love? Thanks!
I second this one. Haven’t tried others but that milani stuff WORKS. It set my graduation makeup and lasted from 7 AM to 9 PM in HOT Florida weather!!!
This has made my makeup last through SoCal heat, pool day, and intense gym workouts where I sweat like a pig. It’s the best affordable setting spray for sure.
YES! I wore it to take pictures with my siblings when we went to the beach in California. My face was literally wet from splashes. Makeup didn’t budge. That stuff is crazy good.
NYX Matte setting spray
How do you use it to get it to work? I’ve tried it and it doesn’t do much for me, but maybe I don’t know how to actually use it 🧐 for reference I just spray it on once I’m done with my makeup before doing mascara
Shake the bottle and then spray it a few inches form your face. Not super super close but enough where you coat each side. I do three sprays, left, right and center. I also move the bottle down while spraying too entirely coat my face. It’s not supposed to show any like major physical difference. It’s supposed to help set your makeup sit so it lasts all day. After spraying just wait for it to dry. I use a paper fan to speed up the process!
I use MAC Fix Plus in between my makeup application and finish with One Size (Sephora).
The spay nozzle is atrocious though. I end up wasting a lot of product because I have to spray really far away and then run into it with my face. It doesn’t spray evenly and just shoots out. The center of the spray will drench your face if you hold it too close.
Is it your first bottle? The sprayer is my favorite part about it. I’m currently on my 3 bottle and it’s the jumbo one. The spray is such a fine mist
I HATEEE the smell!! Not a bad setting spray but I never repurchased it cause of the smell
Is the original better than the dewy version? I have the dewy one and I used most of the bottle but I feel like it doesn’t work, my makeup always rubs off
Love it! It helps to melt the makeup into your skin.
What's everyone's favorite setting spray? I've tried MAC Fix It + and Urban Decay All-nighter. I don't feel like either one does a particularly good job. I have dry skin if it matters.
If it's relevant (and because I need more characters), my regimen is:
-LaRoche Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30
-Smashbox Photo Finish Correct Anti-redness Primer
-MAC Studio Radiance Serum Powdered Foundation
-Setting spray
Thank you!
Mac fix + isn't really a setting spray, its a fixing spray. it doesn't have all the film forming ingredients. The Mac stay over spray is a really nice setting spray though.
You might like the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, it’s great for dry skin!

I love Shape Tape Stay Spray Setting Spray By Tarte definitely look into it! It has been a live saver in this hot weather.
all of my setting sprays either move my makeup or they just make me look so oily. does anybody have any recommendations for a spray that’s not too matte but not oily looking? i’m desperate lol i need something to lock in my makeup and make me look glowy but not greasy. please help!!! thank you so much loves💖🤎💕
Nothing beats the morphe mist imo!! It takes away the powderiness yet helps my face stay set all night!
Agree with the Morphe one. Plus it’s a continuous mist so it’s not as jarring to put on like other sprays!
I like the Urban Decay sprays, they're a little pricey but good. The NYX matte setting spray is good too, at a lower price point. I've also heard great things about the Morphe one, but personally the scent gives me a headache so I don't use it.
I actually picked up the NYC matte a few weeks ago (I had ran out of my usual All nighter) and I just went into Walmart. I love it and have been using it ever since! Can't beat the lower price point either!
*It's cheaper if you get the bigger bottle on Amazon. I haven't been able to find the larger bottle in stores.
Hiya! Makeup artist here, my favs to use are the Urban Decay All Nighter, and MAC fix+. I've heard good things about the Morpe one but I haven't used it myself. But it seems like the issues you're describing with your makeup aren't something that can be solved by just a setting spray. :)
If you think about it, spraying a setting spray over the top of your makeup will definitely help to melt any products together ON TOP of your skin, but it's not going to do anything to help it actually stick to your skin underneath.
Usually makeup breaks up through the day due to oils coming through from your skin, underneath your makeup. This is why using a good primer is so much more effective than just a setting spray when it comes to the longevity of your makeup. (some of my favs are the maybelline fit me primers, milk hydro grip, and ELF putty primers.
I love using setting spray after I've done liquid foundation and concealer, and then I let it dry for a few minutes before powdering lightly over the top. I find I use less setting powder when I do this, and the makeup looks smooth and lasts all day.
Hope this helps!
This is so insightful! Is any of those good on dry skin? Been avoiding setting sprays in fear they might dry me out too much
Look for anything that says "dewy" or "hydrating" on the bottle :) MAC Fix+ is very hydrating but lightweight. Makeup Revolution sells one called "hyaluronic fix" that's a lot cheaper but a good alternative!
Agreed with the Urban Decay one (it’s my favourite) and the Mac fix +
Also here to promote Urban Decay All Nighter. You can seriously sleep in your makeup & wake up looking pretty much the same as the night before. (Obviously sleeping in your makeup isn’t the best, but I’m JS it’s amazing.)
The youtuber/influencer NikkieTutorials came out with a skin care/makeup prep line and I'm IN LOVE with her primer! It's called Where it All Starts Cream. It does magic!! Not only does it make my base look flawless when I apply it, even after 12 hours of wear, I have very little movement - and that's after spending that 12 hours in Disneyland in early fall (so still 85+ degrees) lol Highly recommended giving it a try!!
"Designer" brand - Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
Went into a hot tub in the rain with a full face of makeup & it didn't move!
Spilt coffee on my face while trying to drink it and my makeup still looked flawless.
"Drugstore" brand - NYX matte finishing spray.
NYX matte spray, in a black bottle :)
i’m tryna find a really good setting spray that will hold my makeup for shifts at work while wearing a mask LOOL. today i wore the morphe continuous setting mist and for the most part is good but i want something better.
Urban Decay All Nighter and Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless are my go to setting sprays. Best practice, go in with your spray after putting on foundation/concealer, and one more time at the end of your makeup application (I do my final spritz before applying mascara, which is my last step).
omg thank u!! i’ve heard really good things abt the charlotte tilbury spray but wasn’t sure if it was worth the hype, ty again!
I love the CT one as well. The only setting spray that works for me
Charlotte Tilbury and Milk Makeup are the only mask proof setting sprays I've discovered.
Definitely worth it. In my opinion it’s about as bullet proof as a setting spray can be, and I wear a mask all day every day at work.
As others have recommended, the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray but also the technique of putting on a light layer of translucent powder and then setting spray before you put your makeup on, then put all your makeup on and then set again with the spray. Lasts longer due to the base layer being able to hold any excess oil from your face.
Definitely Urban Decay All Nighter. That stuff keeps my makeup on 14 hours later. Not sure what’s in it maybe magic. But it’s hands down the BEST.
Ben Nye! Your makeup will not budge and it doesn’t feel gross either.
I hear the Ben Nye Final Seal is supposed to be bullet proof.
I used this for my underwater photography. Makeup didn't budge.
As is Krylon's. It makes sense since both brands have theater makeup. Hell, Krylon makes spray paint.
can confirm, I did summer marching band (DCI) for 5 years and it lasted for shows in the southern humid heat! came here to recommend :)
Not taking into account price, what is the absolute best setting spray? I grew up in the early YouTube days & back then Urban Decay’s all nighter was it, so that’s just what I’ve always bought. It just occurred to me today that it’s been a decade (+) since I evaluated my setting spray choice & that there may be better products available now haha. TIA :)
Benefit Porefessional Setting Spray
This has by far the BEST spray nozzle. One pump comes out in such a light, smooth mist you would think it was like an aerosolized spray
I’ve been using the dewy version of the Milani setting spray and honestly love it so I’m seconding that rec
unpopular opinion but I don't think setting sprays work. Not even the ones that are mostly alcohol. I've found no extra longevity from any of them and I think I've pretty much tried all the mainstream beauty ones, high end and drugstore. I have not tried the stage makeup kind though.
you should try spraying just half of your face and test it out. don’t know if it depends on your skin type but for oily gals setting spray definitely makes a difference
I do have an oily t-zone, my nose is the worst. I haven't found setting spray helps with this but have to blot and powder instead.
I used to think that too. But I did a little anecdotal experiment.
I actually spray a little (UD All Night), and mix with eyeshadow for use on my eyelids and lower eye (babydoll look). To test it out, I did it on one side and the other with just the eyeshadow. Without a doubt, the eyeshadow mixed with the spray drastically increased the longevity.
My ride or die is the Nyx Matte finish spray. Gets me through a whole day of playing football no problem!! The milani make it last is also nice, not as bulletproof though.
That setting spray keeps my eyeliner wings on through every moshpit I’m in- and you can’t beat the price point.
i’ve had my makeup stay through beach days (including playing in the waves) thanks to NYX matte spray.
Yes! It is just amazing - I really put it to the test hiking in the tropics, and it always keeps my makeup and sunscreen firmly in place all day long.
I haven’t tried All Nighter myself. My bridal MUA friend suggested these to me and I haven’t needed to try other setting sprays after.
i'm so tired of my makeup smudging on my friends' and bf's shirts when we hug, it's so embarrassing 😭 affordable to mid range ones please
edit: thank you sm for the suggestions! 🤍💗
Setting spray isn’t going to stop this…that’s not what it’s for. You will need to start by using a lighter hand when you apply your makeup and/or setting with powder first.
This worked for me best! I tried the travel size first and liked this better than Morphe setting spray. I will be purchasing full size.
Setting spray isn’t going to save you from makeup transfer if your makeup is on too thick or you have not set it with powder if the makeup is dewy. Setting spray works best when you’ve found the right amount of makeup and setting powder first. It’s intent is to preserve makeup not make it transfer proof.
this! since dialing back my foundation & getting some more “transfer proof” products, only then did setting spray work lol
I’ve never used a setting powder before. What’s a good one? And does it go under or on top of the setting spray?
My personal all time fave is the Coty Airspun! (yes it has a perfumey scent but that goes away basically immediately)
I usually do tinted moisturizer (instead of foundation), concealer, cream contour, then setting powder, then bronzer and blush and then setting spray (Urban Decay All Nighter).
Ben Nye Final Seal. No other setting spray has ever worked for me, but this. I hear it's what funeral homes use on bodies. It's alcohol-based, so make sure you don't have any open cuts and keep your eyes firmly shut when you spray.
This! Aka Barrier Spray. I wear it over face paint and go out to sweaty concerts and it stays SUPER well!
This. Mehron Barrier Spray is similar if unable to find Final Seal. Although the Mehron isn't as fine of a mist.
Omg I was literally thinking this was referring to Mehron. Mehron barrier spray is what I use.
Came here to bring this one up. It was literally designed so that you can dance and sweat under hot stage lighting and not have your makeup run. It works especially well if you put it on after all your cream products, dry it with a fan, then put on your setting powder and powder products. Nothing is moving on your face.
Yep. I live in a hot, humid climate and use this every time I wear makeup.
I feel like no matter what I do, my makeup still transfers and rubs off. What setting spray should I get?
Charlotte Tilbury or One Size. some $trippers i know use hair spray sometimes 🫣 not recommended but for when you are desperate. there is also a spray by Ben Nye that apparently Disney cast members use to keep their makeup on during summer!
I just use the photo finish one by smashbox and my makeup lasts and wears great. It actually looks better as the day goes on for me. I have a more dewy base which may help too. My primer is also the nyx electrolyte one that is the most tacky and hydrating one ive been able to find (for me it’s even tackier than the milk hydrogrip and elf pore grip). For the rest of my makeup i use a random cream blush (my favs r fenty(holiday set) and the she glam one), the makeup revolution powder foundation, charlotte tilbury flawless filter mixed with a liquid highlighter for a bit more glow, colourpop highlighter (supershock), tarte bronzer amazonian clay (the golden shift one), and the telescopic mascara with the stila huge lash as my second coat. With all that my makeup has lasted even wearing masks and going out shopping or working all day
Personally benefit pore fessional is my favorite
Urban Decay all-nighter
the vitamin c version is chefs kiss if u have dry skin
Agreed! It’s become one of my favorites
THIS^
I'm about to write you a book.
The trick is in the layers. I use Mac Fix+ or the Morphe one after almost every single fckng step. Just enough to get a nice mist layer on the face and let it DRY. Get you a fan. Be that bitch and love every second of it. After I prime my face with whatever I'm using to prime that day- spray, foundation/ concealer/ cream shit-spray, powder-spray, blush/bronzer-spray. Once everything is on and done and all you got left is mascara and lipstick (I do Lips very very last and risk it all sometimes bc I wear crazy colors sometimes and am very pale so...yeah. Twitch, bump something... it's all over) this is where I do the heavy duty fucker. UD All Nighter, Elf Micro fine whatever in the green bottle with the ball in it, Makeup Revolution has one in a pink aerosol kind of can that I like, there's the kryolan fixing spray that I haven't tried but really really want to because I've heard nothing but good things. Fuck, use hairspray; just not everyday if you like your pores. Let it all dry. Take the lightest dusting of powder over your face.
Let me know if your makeup moves. It shouldn't because I basically just gave you the recipe for makeup concrete.
Omg I do the same thing Lol mac and morphe, every step or so
I am a SWEATY BITCH in the summer. It's not cute. We were locked and loaded all day erryday in 90+ degree weather this year.
Werk! The 72-hr wear makeup tutorial! Luv that!
OMG DON'T ANYONE WEAR THEIR MAKEUP FOR 72HRS. ABORT MISSION. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT $200.
Does anyone know of a makeup setting spray that actually works? Even if I use waterproof eye liner and mascara it always melts and flakes.
I use Urban Decay All Nighter. Seems to work well for me.
I use the black elf one. Just as good as or better than the urban decay.
I also use tubing mascara as it never runs even when my old waterproof mascara did.
I swear by Milani Setting Spray
Works great as a primer too
Co-signing this, works just as well as the expensive brands!
Yeah I never looked back. I can be in the wind, have allergies, sneeze a ton and sweat and my wings stay!
Charlotte Tilbury

Key Considerations for Choosing a Makeup Setting Spray:
Finish Type: Decide if you prefer a matte, dewy, or natural finish. Matte sprays help control shine, while dewy sprays enhance glow.
Longevity: Look for sprays that claim to extend makeup wear for 8-16 hours or more, especially if you have a long day ahead.
Skin Type Compatibility: Choose a setting spray formulated for your skin type (oily, dry, combination) to ensure it works well with your skin's needs.
Ingredients: Check for skin-friendly ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid for hydration, and avoid alcohol if you have sensitive skin.
Brand Reputation: Consider well-reviewed brands that are known for their quality and effectiveness.
Recommendations:
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray: This is a cult favorite known for its long-lasting formula that keeps makeup in place for up to 16 hours. It has a lightweight feel and works for all skin types.
MAC Prep + Prime Fix+: A versatile option that hydrates and refreshes the skin while setting makeup. It provides a natural finish and is great for dry skin types.
NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray: A budget-friendly option that offers a matte finish and helps control oil throughout the day, making it ideal for oily skin.
Takeaway: Choose a setting spray based on your desired finish, skin type, and longevity needs. Urban Decay is a top choice for long wear, while MAC offers versatility, and NYX is great for budget-conscious shoppers.
